Okay I want to try it guys, but I'm a technophobe.

>can input GPX files
>doesn't rape battery life
I'm going on a trip TODAY, and though I have a paper OS map of the area I'd like to try app gps for fun.
Have some OC from my recent Spain trip as thanks

So even though it is expensive the Gaia GPS app is well worth checking out. I have used it a number of times and can't find an issue with it so far.
Where were you in Spain? I am heading to walk the GR11 on Wednesday!
Get a real phone.

What does he mean by this?
Orux map
always get dedicated devices, if you break your phone you've lost a phone and gps, if you have a separate unit and you break your phone you still have a gps

This. It's why I carry both.
Phone's display is a huge battery suck. Airplane-mode, and stash it in my pack. Sometimes I'll stow it in my windshield bag; it's nice for photos, slope-angle measurements, snow profile logging, avalanche forecasts/obs. But most of the time it's just chilling in my pack.
GPS (76Cx) mounted to bars/dash. Loaded with topo or citynavigator maps. Logs tracks when I ride. Waterproof. Tough as fuck. Takes 12v right to the big-ass connector on the back. USB to push/pull tracks and waypoints to a computer.

fuck, premature submissulation
I carry a map (topo and trails, usually) of the area, along with a compass. Have a notepad and fieldbook, along with pens/pencils/sharpies in a small cordura fieldbook holder.
If I fuck up my GPS (which has happened before, wrecked the moto and peeled my old 60CSx apart like a banana), I still have a phone if I need it.
My radio's got a GPS receiver in it, from the keypad I can get lat/long/elev/speed/heading. It's not much, but it's still a position I can jot down and communicate to others, or use to locate my position on a map.
PLB has a GPS, but no display. Not really ment for local use other than the button for when "Someone's gonna die at this lat/long, plz hurry".
