Teen bit in head by bear wakes up to "crunching sound"

A teen staffer at a Colorado camp fought off a bear after waking up Sunday to find the animal biting his head and trying to drag him away.

The 19-year-old woke up at around 4 a.m. to a "crunching sound" with his head inside the mouth of the bear, which was trying to pull him out of his sleeping bag as he slept outside at Glacier View Ranch 48 miles (77 kilometers) northwest of Denver, Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill said. The teen punched and hit it and other staffers who were sleeping nearby yelled and swatted at the bear, which eventually left, she said.

The staffer, identified only as Dylan, was treated briefly at a hospital and released.

There's a round that buffalo bore makes for bears called the outdoorsman. I haven't seen it stocked anywhere IRL but you can order it. I heard some people have feeding issues with it though so I haven't chanced it. I use some random 147gr rounds when I'm in the woods. I think I'm going to try out some 147gr +p sometime if I can find some which I presume would be better.

I recently went camping and we stumbled across a bear while he was digging for grubs in a meadow. He was probably 50 yards away. It was so weird how he didn't notice us, and while I was watching him I saw him sniff and recognize our scent. Then the bear snuck a sneaky glance at me and we made eye contact, then he kept acting like he didn't notice us. The bear ran away soon after. The whole experience was funny especially how sneaky the bear acted in sneaking a glance at us, it was even weirder when I made eye contact with him.
>>
>>1057310
Must have been a black bear then? I've never encountered one that didn't immediately run away
>>
At the summer camp I went to there was a kid that was alone (normally two people sleep in a tent), a good distance away from everyone else, and had candy bards in his tent. He got mauled by the bear but survived. The next year he came back and worked at the camp as a staff member so obviously it didn't bother him too much.

more shots than you would think depending on the length and the maker, my henry in 4570 (pic related) is advertised as 4 shots, but I can easily fit 6 in the tube, and 1 in the chamber as you can see. Henry just recommends 4 so the spring lasts longer. Besides that, anyone who picks it up and takes it into the bush had better know how to use the damn thing, or they are asking for trouble
>>
>>1060016
as long as you can load it safely, that's better than 4
>>
>>1060200
Im pretty sure Henry is just conservative with its springs so they last longer, and loading 6 may shorten spring life, but nothing close to be unsafe, but i dont know what kind of 4570 your buddy has, so results may vary.

he couldnt figure out how to load more than 4 in without flagging yourself, but the tube holds six, and if you have the lever half open while loading the tube, after you are done loading the tube you can put on directly into the chamber, which he couldnt figure out. I routinely put it 6+1 and never put my hands near the end of the barrel with a round in the chamber.

Bears actually made a decent comeback in FL, so much so last year we had the first bear season for like 40 years or something and only 10% of issued tags were used, but the liberals all cried and threw a fit so they canceled any bear hunt until at least 2019, despite wildlife experts saying bear populations are out of control and they are encroaching upon people.

no bear has been found so far that is immune to bear spray nignog what you are saying here is bear spray is not effective if it doesn't reach the bear well no shit. there are proper techniques taught how to use it, if you do not there is a chance you will miss the bear empty your can and be defenseless.

same goes for guns obviously they are not magically better in fact worse.

now if you are very good with a gun and never used bear spray nor have any practice with it yeah sure bring a gun but spray is way better alternative.

people need to know more about how and why spray fails. it's not failing to stop a bear that shit doesn't happen. it's failing to kill a bear and a predatory bear may come back again and again.

and frankly bear spray as a defensive system is primarily designed to be a one time use device. if you consider the same bear might come back again and again like it happened a few times where a surprise ambush failed and people used the spray to chase off the bear, you realize there is something to be said about redundancy.

90% of bear attacks on humans are defensive of which cases the spray is extremely effective. the remaining 10% usually ends by people standing there ground without using any weapon. it's fairly easy to discourage bears especially if there is more of you. but if a bear comes back for a second go, yeah just shoot it. and if you used spray on a bear expect it to come back watch out for it stalking you. if it does immediately call for help don't fuck around. maybe you can shoot it maybe you just wound it or spook it and enrage it.
>>
>>1067009
I don't really trust anyones info on bear spray. People like to flip between bears are big pussies because they're easy to scare so they'll leave, and then oops don't spook it then it'll really want to eat you. It sounds like when people say the police should of just used a taser or shot the guy in the leg instead of killing him when those are both potentially lethal things to do and neither even work consistently let alone a typically less than lethal thing like spray even though people still get killed by mace.

What if it's windy out and your down wind from the bear, if you try spraying it it's going to be like pissing in the wind and you'll mace yourself more than the bear- I had this dog would chew on electric wires people said to put pepper sauce on it to dissuade it, the dog liked it even more causing me to drop pepper sauce on myself and the dog trying to bite me to get at the sauce just threw some seasoning on the meat there
>>
>People like to flip between bears are big pussies because they're easy to scare so they'll leave, and then oops don't spook it then it'll really want to eat you.
it entirely depends on the bear which one is true. a 75-115 kg black bear is a huge pussy and will easily scare off. a 250-300 kg male black bear might just want to eat you real bad if hungry it will not scare easily it will be cautious maybe and try several times but won't give up easily once it decided you are prey. they are quiet rare tho. vast majority of black bears are human sized. brown bears usually avoid people most attacks are territorial or protective. if not same applies as to big blacks but it's more exceedingly rare.

>What if it's windy you always position wind behind your back when using pepper spray.
as the bear comes at you start backing into the wind. if wind was blowing from the bear it wouldn't even notice or know whatever the fuck you are you their eyes are not great. an other thing with spray you have to factor in spread and bear speed so they usually recommend is to spray ahead of the bear aiming at it's chest not it's head. that will give the bear the full whiff of fiery hell as it runs into the cloud.

use short bursts while keeping up the dodge and backing away so you can correct if need be and not run out of spray before the bear is in effective range at all.

all of this should be pretty instinctual to anyone knowing how bear spray works, and about 100 times easier to do to an average person than shooting the bear dead with a gun in the same time-frame.
>>
>>1067081
>as the bear comes at you start backing into the wind.
woops no problem mr bear just stand right there and don't do anything while i start moving around
They look into rivers and yank fish out with their paws, their vision aint that bad. This is the thing I'm kind of talking about like oh i'll just pull this ninja stealth movement
>teleports behind bear
heh nothing personal kid

Just walking around seen a big ass buck little wooded area just outside any hunting zones, around rut season, thought we'd scare the thing off, way more aggressive that time of year just made the thing angry. Gets to be a cold area they get larger here they're not like dog sized ones some places have I've chased deers down on foot, even right head on at herd of them stuck in a fenced area before, that buck didn't act like none of them, was just pissed and 100% ready to fight that time of year. A bear would be like a billion times worse.
I'm not 100% sure on bears but if it's their mating season I'd really expect the things to be a lot more aggressive. I'm not saying mace is a bad idea but I wouldn't even think of trying it without a gun. I mean I don't even expect the gun to stop the thing I just don't think punching or stabbing it if it's on you is going to work as well as shooting it. No fucking way anyone is going to out run a bear let alone if you mace yourself first on accident cause of wind or just get caught in some of the spray.
>>
>>1067072
False equivalency fallacy
>>
>>1067220
I'm not even trying to equate a deer to a bear. I'm just saying even something as skittish and mild mannered as a deer can turn very aggressive. I typically try not to scare deers because I don't want them running into the road or anything, I just kind of use to want to be able to spear hunt them without having to throw the spear and testing it out a bit on how plausible it was, and a few other incidents with getting caught near the things. I wouldn't even want to spear hunt a big pissed off buck, that's not even a predatory animal like a bear. The point is at a time of year even a timid animal can get extremely aggressive.
I am so far from knowledgeable about any of this but if you can switch from having the wind blowing in your face to having it on your back when confronted with a beer I wouldn't even think of macing the thing it decided to let you go. I'd try to slip away and maybe climb a tree, then consider shooting it if it decides it wants to climb up there too.
>>
>>1067235
again if the wind blows in your face the bear doesn't even know you are there or what you are. you can be pretty fucking sure it is not hunting you.

now here is the thing in the woods where close encounters can happen randomly the wind is not a real issue. out in the open the visibility conditions don't really allow for close encounters unless you decided to walk blindfolded. you got plenty of time to go sideways and lure the bear into the wind assuming there is strong enough wind to hinder the spray.

so there you have it wind is not much of an issue. i don't know about rain making a difference.

one thing you should never do if a bear comes at you is climb a tree. even a grizzly can be up in ten meters in a matter of seconds.

That's whree I completely disagree, a bear can cover a big open field. If there is stuff like trees around I'd be less concerned about it. Out in the open that fucker has every advantage in the world.
I know they can climb trees but I really doubt their ability to cliimb, get shot, and eat me all at the same time. At the very least it's expending energy trying to get up while I'm sitting comfy.

>At the very least it's expending energy trying to get up while I'm sitting comfy.
that's like saying a shark is expending energy chewing off your leg while you float comfy so you should be fine.

but jokes aside, the bears are only twice as fast as a human and don't always start out in full throttle you got plenty of time to think it through and prepare to use your spray properly.

if the bear stand on it's hind feet and clicking it's mouth it also wants you to go but it doesn't feel dominant it's worried as hell and trying to get a better measure of you.

if the bear has your smell, it's coming in attentively but surely head up ears up confident body language and economic movements, it probably want's to eat you. you can still use spray to avert immediate attack, but best be on the lookout and get the fuck out.

Do you american retards legitimately think animals hunt people? I love when I find cougar tracks here in the pantanal. I even managed to see one eating a caiman once, it was very nice. Why the fuck would you shoot one?

4 other people, and we all hiked in 5 miles to get to that bench you idiot, whats you point?
>>
>>1070818
>>1070820
really? looked to me it wanted to play. it was not defensive or uneasy and was too small to hunt two humans.
>>
>>1071228
apparently there are people who raise bears by hand and let them free. wtf...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpeHzsplOnM
well that could explain bears getting this comfortable with humans. that and getting fed by hikers.

but that was definitely not a bear attack nor defensive nor predatory. that bear wanted to make friends (and maybe get food).
>>
>>1071228
So they could have petted it and gave it hugs?
>>
>However, when bears are not in the mood to fight another bear or a human, they will do a peculiar physical thing when they meet.
>They will turn their head to one side as if to acknowledge “okay, you and I are cool.”
>A researcher in Redoubt Bay, Alaska (2008, Hunter) found this worked even if a human turned their head in response.
>The bear recognized this language and went on their way.

so when a bear asks "are we cool m8?" say "yeah we are cool bud" by turning your head sideways
>>
>>1071239
maybe but play is practice for hunting and killing for predator babies. so letting them playing with a human is not the brightest idea.

that entire situation was fucked up. probably it had been best if they peppered the bear to stop it from approaching humans.

It never ceases to amaze me seeing how fast bears can get up trees.

Outlandishly false, I do not even know where this myth comes from as fatal bear attacks are well recorded. You'd have to be a total idiot to even believe such a falsehood.

I'm anti gun. Not in your usecase, but in environments like inner city, schools, librarys and such or in the hands of dindus or sandnignogs. I understand your rationale, can you understand mine?
>>
>>1066801
>(at least) one gun AND bear spray
sounds perfectly sensible for alaska
to be honest the problem is the retards that think having a gun on them magically solves all their problems in life when it really is just a tool.
>>
>>1071535
before 1990 almost all bear related deaths were by brown bear. i guess humanity went soft or something or maybe black bears really grown in numbers from 1800.

I think I have seen this before.

I do understand your rationale. However, do you appreciate that when guns are excluded from only some places, those areas are highly vulnerable to, and will be specifically targeted by, mass/rampage shooters?
>>

Fucking bears man
>be first time overnighting
>put food high up
>wake up to a black bear trying to climb the tree

Still can't overnight

you did not wake up because the bear was chewing on your head so i would say that was a good encounter.

>>1073442
You have to think of the number of people attacked and mauled but not killed as well.

>>
>>1074085
frankly that cunt that left him with the pissed off bear basically killed him.
he could have distracted the bear use the bike as a barrier it was not even that big bear 370 pounds someone who don't have his wrists broken could slap around a bear that size with a bit of grit.
>>
>>1074014
>I do understand your rationale. However, do you appreciate that when guns are excluded from only some places, those areas are highly vulnerable to, and will be specifically targeted by, mass/rampage shooters?

Nah m8, you are full of shit. Mass shootings are rare freak occurences while getting attacked by animals kills about 30 000 people worldwide annualy.
>>
>>1074143
30 whole fucking thousand? including africa and india? wow, do you know what mosquitos kill each year? or cars for that matter, or how many gets a heart attack?
>>
>>1074151
I guess a lot more. Still, 30k is a serious number, i say it warrants a gun. And i recommend to take malaria pills and use a safety belt as well.
>>
>>1074154
generally if you don't carry a fak but carry a gun you just like to shoot things not concerned about your safety. fak is about ten times more likely to save your life.
>Each year, more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States.
>When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby. Almost 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. >CPR, especially if performed in the first few minutes of cardiac arrest, can double or triple a person’s chance of survival.

guess bringing a buddy is more important than any weapon for assuring your survival.
