Scooped up a casting Omen Black 2 7'6" MH at Gander Mt. today for the low low price of $97.50, so what reel should I put on it? I want to use it for spinner/buzz baits, frogs, and 1/2oz jigs/rigs. With that in mind I think a 7.1 or 7.3 is the way to go.

I've heard stories of people losing fingers when they try to take a hook out of a bluefish's mouth by hand.

I can do it if need be but i'd much prefer pliers. Them teefs is sharp. You'd best be good at removing hooks by hand if you want to do it with a bluefish.

Who the fuck needs barrel swivels.
>>
>>1056153
I usually use snap swivels on my caster so I can easily switch out baits. I have bait ADD and if something seems to not be working, I'll swap it out. I go through damn near half my tackle a day; sue me.
>>
>>1056153
uh... dont barrel swivels... swivel? as in they prevent line twist?

>>1056155
I also use tippet rings on my fly rod.
>>
>>1056156
Braid and florocarbon tied directly together will not twist. A swivel has a rotating ring in which the line tied to it can move around, which is literaly worse. With an alberto knot. The leader has no way to rotate where the knot is so it stays firmly fixed to the braid.
>>
>>1056162
>Braid and florocarbon tied directly together will not twist
hold my beer
>>
>>1056157
Not what it's for. It's just a dependable way to tie a leader to your braid for when you're using crankbaits and jigs without needing to add a swivel.

The less tackle you have on your line, the more natural it looks. Also that knot is ridiculously strong, try to break it.
>>
>>1056168
> swivel for leader to braid

People don't actually so this right? I mean i use snap for lures sometimes if I'm lazy. The weight of the swivel definitely would mess the the lure action and the casting of the lure if the swivel is few feet down the line.

I either go surgeon knot or fg knot though. Double uni fails me couple of times. I haven't tried other knots though
>>
>>1056171
>People don't actually so this right?

They do for some reason.
>>
Do any fish bros want to be my steam friend?
>>
>>1056181
not really
>>
>>1056173
Yes for reducing line twist with spinning reels. Even your $300 spinning reel with ultra super mega slick braid will produce line twist. One of the ways to help reduce this problem is with a swivel. Another use for swivels is when attaching 50# floro ro 30# power pro. Line to line knots do not work that well when you have slick to slick/thin to thick so using a swivel to attach a leader gives you better security.
>>
>>1056181
Fish can't live in steam, and it's not a very flavorful way to cook them either.
>>
Went out wading tonight in a spot the usually produces for me. It didn't. So I sat on the dam and did some vertical jigging/some casting for sunnies.

Apparently you can put anything on the split ring of a spoon and sunnies will tear it up. Flies, mini 1" paddletails (which, were sitting in my tacklebox for years without success), or even a Carolina Rig bead on an aberdeen.

I have seen so many douchebags at my local ponds fishing with low-profile memecasters, meme rods, and $300+ of tackle and I've literally never seen any one of them catch a fish. Can't forget the fucking backpacks either. God it's such a tool look.

Why do people buy into the shit they see Youtubers doing and think that they're going to get the same results?
>>
>>1056192

Also, putting weight in front of a lure to change its diving depth/action is not unheard of.
>>
>>1056203

Fucking love those things. Like mini tarpon.
>>
>>1056241

If you're fishing deep water up to 50 feet deep and casting dozens of yards, then you need that much line.

Espicially if you hook a fish that has some real endurance. The fight can take 10 minutes to several hours with certain fish, and you will need that line.
>>
So I defiantly think MH rods are a joke for bass fishing, if you're fishing in heavy cover just get a good fiberglass rod, otherwise you're just man handling it in.

Elaborate. I carry all my gear in a Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon with a net on there with quick release because I like river fishing and walk the shores throughout the day.
Am I a meme?
>>
>>1056271

Because that's how all hobbies work. Shit gets marketed and people lap it up. We'll known personalities become trend setters.

Backpacks are useful though.
>>
>>1056266
>>1056276
That makes sense, but the dude was making a deal over it because one low profile reel held marginally more line than another low profile reel as of 20yds is earth shattering.
If someone were targeting that those kinds of fish I assume any low profile baitcaster is immediately out of the question.
>>
>>1056277

Man handling the fish is the point. Haul them out of cover asap before you get tangled and break off, losing a lure, the fish, and possibly the lute in the fish which could kill it.

Medium Heavy?

Sabiki rig with a relatively heavy sinker is not uncommon when fishing for either baitfish, herring or mackerel here in Denmark and I guess what you call a medium-heavy rod is a regular rod in Denmark. Our general conditions on the coast are rougher than in your standard bass-lake. Mariager-anon and I covered this a thread or two ago.

deliberately targeting carp on fly rod.
you have to spend hours walking around looking for one with his nose in the mud. if you spook it before you can cast at it you have to start over. then you have to cast at it. if your fly or fly line spooks them, you have to start all over. then you have to get them to take your fly.very often they will look at it, follow for a second, then turn away for no reason. other times they wont even look at it. if they dont want your fly you have to cast again and use a different stripping pattern. if after doing that a few times they still wont take it, time to change flies. then repeat. and if at any time during this process the carp spooks, you have to start all over again. its so frustrating to learn that this "garbage fish that will eat anything" is so picky, and that a 28 inch fish will spook at anything. even a sparrow flying to close to the water.
>>
>>1056573

They're literally autism the fish. If they're eating only pilchards that day they won't eat your pilchard unless it's exactly the same size as what they're keyed in on. If the water is clear then even a fucking pinch on weight will scare them away. Sometimes they won't eat for days and then all of a sudden go on a feeding frenzy that lasts for only 15 minutes and if you don't have the right bait you're fucked.

Spillway snook are a different story.

THIS THIS THIS.
Light colored, breathable, and wicking is the name of the game here. Armpit and upper back vent holes look dorky, but they fucking work.
Pack lots of liquids at a 4:1 waters to Powerades ratio. Sports drinks can dehydrate you bad if you're not careful. Better to sip them until you notice the taste change slightly (goes from DELICIOUS to "this kinda tastes like sweat"), then switch back to water.
Start hydrating an hour early and drink often. By the time you feel thirsty you're already 2-3% dehydrated. For a 150lb man, that's 3-4lbs of water gone before your body tells you it's thirsty. That's two quarts-a LOT to absorb, and cold water is absorbed more slowly than slightly warmer water. Stay on top of it and keep sipping.
Apply sunscreen early and often too. Sunscreen lasts 90 minutes per application on average. If you don't want to be in super crispy agony with a full-body burn, keep up with it and reapply when and where you feel your skin starting to get hot.

>>
>>1056685
It isn't that hard to get a general idea of where they'll be.
Get a sinking pool thermometer and rig it up with a bunch of thin white poly line under a big float. Mark it every foot with a sharpie and go from there.
For reference, Bass like a water temperature of 70F (21C) best and seek it out.
So if it's 67F 5 feet down, bass are going to be a little holding around structure that's a little shallower than that in the shade, maybe that depth or deeper in the sun. If it's 76F, they're going to be deeper-untie some line and try again at 10 feet down.
If nowhere in the lake is that temperature they'll be wherever they can get closest to it. That could mean down at the bottom in the shade or near a cold tributary in the heat of the summer, down at the bottom in the sun in winter, or up in the warm shallows in the spring and fall.
>>
>>1056888

The water is gin clear. The only time I catch them up shallow is during the spawn. Finding structure is easier said then done. I did find a large tree that dips out into deeper water last time I was there at least.
>>
>>1056788

I fished a couple miles before it empties into Granger Lake.

Never personally used it, but from what I've seen it's used in place of mono since mono is garbage. If it means anything to you, a YouTuber recommends it to all new anglers since it's better than mono while not being more technique specific like flouro and much cheaper than braid.

Caught an ever bigger one. Thing actually faught really hard for its size. Here's the story for the first one. I had my 4 weight. Used a 4x leader with a 5x tippet. On the end I had a olive colored wooly bugger with a gold bead head. Not sure on the size and I lost it so I can't take a picture of it. The water was moving pretty quick. My drifts would last maybe 15 seconds when I would cast as far as I could upstream and then it straightening out down stream. I didn't do anything other than let it drift down naturally with the current. Not sure on the water temp but it was pretty warm. I didn't have my wadders on but I still just wet waded anyway. When I caught it I was standing in the water upstream of a slow moving pool where I say a bunch of big rocks. On my side it was all sand. I would drop my fly in the darkest colored area where I could see rocks. About 1/3 of the way through my drift I saw my fly line start getting pulled upstream and I set the hook. Fight on the first one was short since it was a dink but holy fuck was I happy. I was even happier when I caught pic related. I almost took it home since it was belly up in the water in my net but I let him chill there for a few minutes and after a while he started flopping so I let him out and he chilled by my feet letting the current flow through its gills. Slowly it moved its way sideways back into the rocky area and that was that. We only fished a tiny little section too. I can't wait to get back down here by myself so I can cover some real water.

>>

Thanks, it'll mostly be bank fishing around folly island. Pier fishing is a possibility, but I've never done that and navigating a crowded pier with a fish on seems difficult.

Hey guys, I'm near a river that is pic related, and I was wondering what lures I could use to fish in it, I am looking to catch bass. I have a diving lure with a 2 inch lip, could I use that? Just cast it in and see what I get?

Yes I do it all the time. My net is attached to my vest. Elastic so I can pull it down.

Once you reel the fish in enough you just pull the rod back and scoop him. Look up videos of trout fishing and it'll make sense.
>>
>>1057219
Typically the first spot is the best you hit. And once you catch a fish out of one spot you shouldn't keep fishing there unless you're fishing for schooling fish.

Ive never had bad luck with first fish first cast. Fish smart
>>
help an anon out getting into soft plastics please, trying to get started in bass fishing due to upcoming trip to St Lawrence river, always been trout angler but never so much bass, need help getting solid foundation for bass strategy, starting in local pond to get the kids some practice to get ready for the trip, are senkos and zooms the way to go, must you buy them or are the 50 packs on ebay for $18 sufficient, wacky, Carolina, texas rig, what to do?
>>
>>1056861

I'm mostly a fly-fisher but started out baitcasting as a wee lad. My question here is:
>why do so many folk have trouble with baitcast reels?

Like idk what to say. If you can't cast properly with them probably time to just give up fishing.
>>
>>1057425
Senkos and Zoom are the easiest way to get into it and the money saved by buying Zoom products can go towards more Senkos.
For the Senkos buy both the 4" and 5" versions. The 4" are great for drop shotting and you can work them like a jerkbait and be fairly successful, and the 5" are great for wack/Texas rigging.
For Zoom pick up some 6" lizards in whatever watermelon variant you feel like, and some trick worms in red bug or a watermelon variety. If you're feeling frisky and want to try and target a big bass Texas rig an Ol' Monster in plum color with a 1/8oz bullet weight and fish it slowly during the hot parts of the day. That should just about cover summer bass fishing with plastics.
>>
>>1057231
it was cold and windy unfortunately.
>>1057342
i count those as dildos
>>1057428
so many people have trouble casting them for the same reason so many people have trouble casting fly rods: they are unwilling to put in the time necessary to learn how to use it. its not hard if you practice a little, but usually they will try a friends, blow it up, then never touch another baitcasting reel again ever.
>>
>>1057432

Casting a fly rod takes some finesse and practice. Casting a baitcast takes an IQ of 47 and one arm.

I will have 3 kids and 2 adults fishing for 5 days all over the place up there next month and just trying to figure the best plan for tackle and strategy
>>
>>1057393
As long as people aren't jackasses then they should reel/watch their line if you get one
>Virginia Ave boat landing you can walk around and fish trout, reds, and founder there
>Breach Inlet croaker, sharks/rays, trout around the jetties, reds and other misc. surf fish
>Shem Creek Park reds, sharks/rays, pinfish
Just work points, bends, oyster beds, look for eddies in the current, and work the grass line at high tide with a popping cork or artificial while you have 1 rod on bottom with a Carolina

>>

Honestly I've never been to that part of the country, but I'll go out on a limb and assume that the smallmouths are more plentiful than the largemouths. With this in mind I'd be throwing the 4" Senkos the most either wacky or drop shot rigged. Depending on how young the kids are they might be better off just casting out crappie jigs like grubs since both smallies and panfish will bite it. If you have a boat try and key in on rock piles and formations since that's where schools of smallmouth like to hang out.

Anyone here fish big jointed swimbaits? They are all expensive as fuck but it seems like the way to go if you'd rather spend hours trying to catch one good fish instead of hours catching several 1-2 pounders.
>>
>>1057553
Dinks still attack them.
I've seen footage of 2 pounders hooked on full size bluegill swim baits. Jon B says he like to run them parallel to the shore if you care.
>>
>>1057556
2 pounders aren't good fish but I don't think I'd consider them dinks. The half pounders Pepsi catches are dinks.
>>
>>1057560
Eh I've gotten into the habit of calling everything less than 3lbs dinks because I pull in 1.5-2lbs fish almost exclusively now. I guess I'm getting jaded.
>>
I'm tempted to buy a cheap jointed river2sea s waver and throw it with a cheapo ugly stik saltwater combo I bought years ago for a vacation. Maybe if I land something good I'll invest in a swimbait combo and better lures.
>>
>>1057562

I like that Bluegill will punch above their weight though. If I'm having a bad day at bass will just put on a nymph fly and try for big sunnies/etc
>>
>>1057565
I'm still practicing my casting I fields but part of the reason why I bought a fly setup is if I don't have access to 10 pounders I'll just make the 2 pounders feel huge.
>>
>>1057567

lmao that's the spirit. But when you catch a 10 pounder it will feel like a bull ride.
>>
For flyfishermen:

Is there any way to make bucktail-based streamers more durable? I find that after 2 bass/larger fish the hairs are just fucked out of position. Idk. That might be normal.
>>
>>1057568
Doubt I will. All the lakes have shitty shore access, but plenty of creeks that feed out of these have some sizable largemouths. I found some new places to try out since I live 15mins or so from the googan house, and they like to explore ponds and creeks.
>>
>>1057570

Hear ya on the lake thing. I might get an inflatable kayak for that reason. I'm a bit jealous, not many good creeks around here. It'd be awesome to explore around a bit and catch anything big.
>remember being kid w/friend at random perch creek
>end up catching massive flathead that took both of us to pull in

Pick one.

What's more autistic is having dozens of different types of soft plastics in a myriad of sizes, colors, and riggings all ready to go at a moment's notice to catch only bass.

Spoons are the antithesis of that.
