My life went to shit a few years ago and I had to move back to my home town to get back on my feet again. I'd been away for years, but my two closest friends still lived nearby.

Because of the state I was in (pretty depressed †bh) all I wanted to do on weekends was go out in the woods and just not deal with people. My friends were pretty accommodating, and it became our thing to do on the weekend - we'd get home from work, grab food and beers, and meet-up at one of their houses and go out and spend the night in the woods fucking around down at the train tracks and finding old ruins to urbex and shit like that. We did this a lot, in all weather, in all seasons.

Over a year or two it became kind of an institution, a thing we would just go and do almost every weekend. One of us jokingly said we should build a monument down on the cliff by the train tracks to commemorate this unusual episode in our lives. We ended-up actually running with it, and a few months later we had a stainless steel plaque professionally laser-etched, embedded in a 400lb reinfoced concrete pillar that we pulled out into the woods on a yoke with wheels and buried 3ft deep in a 100lb foot of wet concrete.

This was three years ago. I've since moved away again and getting my career going again. They haven't gone out in a long time, not at all since I left in fact. Until this weekend - they went and checked on the pillar and sent me pics! So glad nobody's stumbled upon it or defaced it. The shrubs I transplanted before I left to help conceal it are surprisingly still alive, although they're growing really slowly because of the shade I guess. It's basically under some pine trees so it could use a cleaning. That little metal tab on the front is a bottle opener.

So, technically even though I wasn't /out/ it was a big 4th of July outting for me to have them go out there and visit the old thing.
