Is mountaineering really as dangerous as it looks in the movies?
>>
>>1047626
I have a phd in mountain climbing

no
>>
nah the lack of oxygen high up combined with extreme heights causing falls to easily be fatal combined with avalanches combined mountain ghosts don't really add up to a dangerous experience
>>
>>1047626
no youre grand off you go

This. It's much worse.
>>
>>1047626
It's usually more dangerous.
Especially if you consider crevasses if you're hiking on a glacier.
>>
ITT pussies who have never left their rural/suburban home
>>
I saw an episode of Deal or no Deal with this guy in a wheelchair who said his dream was to be the first person in a wheelchair to climb Everest. They all thought it was so inspiring but I was struck by his ignorance. Everest is covered in dead bodies and those people had legs and, I assume, a reasonable degree of fitness and preparedness. Even if someone risks their life to try and carry his disabled mass up there he's gonna' meet a bad end.
>inb4 he did actually did it and I haven't heard
I will chop my cock off if he reaches the summit!
>>
Have you even tried hill-walking or scrambling anon?

Most people underestimate the amount of force you need to traverse steep terrain. When you factor in all of the problems with altitude and extreme weather it becomes ridiculously hard. There is a reason that only a few people summit the tallest mountains.
>>
What's even the point? Why does getting our physical bodies to some location entice anyone? Communication, relationships, wealth, knowledge and power are the only important things in this world.

My physical body only exists as a dumb shell to carry out what happens in my mind.

>>
past 8000 meters high you're in death territory. You have to search for small windows of time when the weather is clear and go for the summit AND go down in a few hours. Climbers get caught by weather and cannot go down. Altitude sickness is no joke.
I'd recommend for movies
>Meru (2015)
>Touching the void (2003)
>K2 Siren of the Himalaya (2012)

>any Alpine Journal
>>
>>1047626
they drop like flies irl so I guess it's pretty dangerous
>>
YES VERY
>>
>>1047640
Sweating and being out of breath while only seeing your shoes and the dirt and rocks in front of you for 5 hours straight, being followed by sitting atop a summit and having a clear 360 degree view extending for dozens of kilometers towards the horizon is really satisfying experience.

And to OP, it's dangerous yes, but there's many levels of mountaineering. It can be fairly comfy and not very threatening.

>>
>>1047626
I actually climb a lot, (not rock climb) as most people have said its mainly bad weather, fatigue on the decent and avalanches which kill people. Also on Mt Everest and K2 sometimes ques can form (more on Everest) which can lead to issues.

Its not very dangerous unless you are very unlucky or go looking for trouble, ie climbing an avalanche prone area after a heavy snowfall etc
>>
i wouldn't even want to go if people weren't such fucking fags about it. if everyone realized how pointless it is, no one would need to go, but no it's so "brave and hard" and not just "stupid and dangerous".
>>
yes but there are upsides. for example my teacher whom i hated died while mountaineering
>>

Yes, but at the highest peaks at the edge of the Earth's atmosphere..

Also, a those heights there's less air blocking the rays from the sun; any exposed skin will be burned, and if you look directly at the sun you'll go blind. That's why mountain climbers always wear special protective goggles and long sleeves.

that depends where you're climbing. in europe you should be fine, in the united states some peaks are holy to native americans and you're inviting bad luck for desecrating them

the himalayan mountains though, that's where the spooky shit comes in. let's just say there's a reason you aren't supposed to leave your tent at night, completely unrelated to temperatures, weather and the darkness.

buddhists are highly spiritual folk and their dead linger around long after their bodies passed away. some malicious, some benevolent, either way coming face to face with a spirit is not a pleasant experience. you're not a buddhist, you're not there for a pilgrimage, this isn't your land and you don't belong on this mountain. take my advice and don't anger the dead. bring incense sticks and learn prayers or ask a nepalese to pray for your safety or you WILL suffer consequences. i know someone who learned this the hard way

let's talk about how in the movie Everest, the main character Rob Hall looked like this IRL, which does resemble Josh Brolin, who is an actor in the film, but DOESN'T play this guy. He plays some other guy. And the guy who plays Rob Hall doesn't look nearly as similar to Hall as Brolin does...

This thread surely moved fast. Anyway I always find funny that retards complain about mountaineering and high peaks like Everest because it doesn't fit their interest, capabilities or wallet. Guess what people take enjoyment in different things, if some people can do those things good for them, even if they're spoonfed by sherpas, tour guides and papa's trust fund.

As for the danger, well obviously it's a great amount of it but that's part of the fun. But seriously, /out/ gets more /in/ as the time gets by, any kind of adventurous activities is frown at.

More dangerous I'd say. People under estimate the outdoors because they project on them some documentary reality. Even a relatively simple hike in medium mountain during the good season regularly kill ill prepared people.
pic related start of a hike
>>

No its because little tiny minuscule edemas happen somewhere in the eye and over time they add up and you end up losing sight. It is related to height.
