Is mountaineering really as dangerous as it looks in the movies?
>>1047626
I have a phd in mountain climbing
no
nah the lack of oxygen high up combined with extreme heights causing falls to easily be fatal combined with avalanches combined mountain ghosts don't really add up to a dangerous experience
>>1047626
no youre grand off you go
>>1047626
You never leave the house, do you.
>>1047628
M-m-m-mountain g-g-ghosts??
>>1047631
They can be just as bad or rarely worse than mountain goats
>>1047631
they mostly come at night
mostly
I actually grew up in what some would consider a mountain town so I'm living proof that it isn't
>>84383266
This. It's much worse.
>>1047626
It's usually more dangerous.
Especially if you consider crevasses if you're hiking on a glacier.
ITT pussies who have never left their rural/suburban home
I saw an episode of Deal or no Deal with this guy in a wheelchair who said his dream was to be the first person in a wheelchair to climb Everest. They all thought it was so inspiring but I was struck by his ignorance. Everest is covered in dead bodies and those people had legs and, I assume, a reasonable degree of fitness and preparedness. Even if someone risks their life to try and carry his disabled mass up there he's gonna' meet a bad end.
>inb4 he did actually did it and I haven't heard
I will chop my cock off if he reaches the summit!
Have you even tried hill-walking or scrambling anon?
Most people underestimate the amount of force you need to traverse steep terrain. When you factor in all of the problems with altitude and extreme weather it becomes ridiculously hard. There is a reason that only a few people summit the tallest mountains.
What's even the point? Why does getting our physical bodies to some location entice anyone? Communication, relationships, wealth, knowledge and power are the only important things in this world.
My physical body only exists as a dumb shell to carry out what happens in my mind.

>>84383266
His first link is NSFL btw guyss..
past 8000 meters high you're in death territory. You have to search for small windows of time when the weather is clear and go for the summit AND go down in a few hours. Climbers get caught by weather and cannot go down. Altitude sickness is no joke.
I'd recommend for movies

>>1047626
they drop like flies irl so I guess it's pretty dangerous
YES VERY
>>1047640
Sweating and being out of breath while only seeing your shoes and the dirt and rocks in front of you for 5 hours straight, being followed by sitting atop a summit and having a clear 360 degree view extending for dozens of kilometers towards the horizon is really satisfying experience.
And to OP, it's dangerous yes, but there's many levels of mountaineering. It can be fairly comfy and not very threatening.
>>1047641
death wish
>>1047628
dude dont forget about the microscopic space debris above the clouds flying around at light speed like that shit will go straight through you
nah I live in a really tall building and can jog around on the roof just fine even when it's cold outside
>>1047650
thanks for the warning satan
>>1047650
is that a real thing, father of lies?
I died while mountaineering two years ago
>>1047626
I actually climb a lot, (not rock climb) as most people have said its mainly bad weather, fatigue on the decent and avalanches which kill people. Also on Mt Everest and K2 sometimes ques can form (more on Everest) which can lead to issues.
Its not very dangerous unless you are very unlucky or go looking for trouble, ie climbing an avalanche prone area after a heavy snowfall etc
i wouldn't even want to go if people weren't such fucking fags about it. if everyone realized how pointless it is, no one would need to go, but no it's so "brave and hard" and not just "stupid and dangerous".
yes but there are upsides. for example my teacher whom i hated died while mountaineering
>>1047658
Don't talk shit about him or his mountain ghost will haunt you anon.
>>1047653
Yes, but at the highest peaks at the edge of the Earth's atmosphere..
Also, a those heights there's less air blocking the rays from the sun; any exposed skin will be burned, and if you look directly at the sun you'll go blind. That's why mountain climbers always wear special protective goggles and long sleeves.
>>1047626
THE ROUTE TO THE SUMMIT OF EVEREST IT LITERALLY LITTERED WITH DOZENS OF CORPSES
THEY JUST LEAVE THEM THERE BECAUSE ITS TOO DIFFICULT TO RECOVER THEM
SOME HAVE BEEN THERE SO LONG THEY BECOME LANDMARKS FOR GUIDES
It's dangerous but I somehow manage to climb on top of your mom every night
>>1047661
Apparently green boots is removed now. Also, there are several routes up Mt. Everest, two main ones.
>>1047663
In May 2014, Green Boots was reported missing,[4] presumably removed or buried.[3] In 2017 as greater number of climbers returned, he was noticed again at 8500 meters altitude, and the corpse was buried/covered there.[5]
>>1047627
Is there anything more pathetic than finding yourself posting on /tv/, rather than /trv/, by accident?
People wasting their lives away watching television. Fucking hell Mootichingchong, ban me.

>>1047666
Now Hannelore there finally blew away, but a couple of guys had died previously trying to recover the remains
>>1047666
how could you resist punting that skull off?
>>1047657
This guy gets it. I spent most of my time lying in bed or shitposting on the internet and I'm all the happier for it.
If I ever wanted to see a pretty view I could google it from the safety of my bedroom. If I ever want to get cold, or whatever, I'll eat an ice-cream.
We can get all the rewards of mountain climbing for free.
>>1047665
You could spend years climbing mountains without ever seeing something as beautiful or perfect as this image I found in 5 seconds.
I'm not lazy, I'm just energy efficient.
>>1047666
is he gonna be ok?
>>1047643
It's a nice way to die desu. Sure you have the occasional cunts taking pictures, but they're very few and far between. The rest of the time you're out there in nature all by yourself, with a great panorama, no human soul anywhere near, no disturbances, comfy as fuck.
>>1047670
He's just resting

You can get better views than that on a ski holiday in the Alps nigga
>>1047641
>>1047642
Well fuck. Selfish, attention-seeking cunts though they be, they showed me a thing.
For me it's just about walking on the shitty rocks that are slippery as fuck and one wrong step might just kill me, I sometimes wish it would but it never does. Not even after falling. I regularly throw myself into any trees I can find hoping that I'll misjudge the distance and just fall short and splatter all over. Alas, it never happens.
that depends where you're climbing. in europe you should be fine, in the united states some peaks are holy to native americans and you're inviting bad luck for desecrating them
the himalayan mountains though, that's where the spooky shit comes in. let's just say there's a reason you aren't supposed to leave your tent at night, completely unrelated to temperatures, weather and the darkness.
buddhists are highly spiritual folk and their dead linger around long after their bodies passed away. some malicious, some benevolent, either way coming face to face with a spirit is not a pleasant experience. you're not a buddhist, you're not there for a pilgrimage, this isn't your land and you don't belong on this mountain. take my advice and don't anger the dead. bring incense sticks and learn prayers or ask a nepalese to pray for your safety or you WILL suffer consequences. i know someone who learned this the hard way
>>1047675
Globetrotting is just a meme. Why would I spend thousands of dollars and weeks of my life just so I can see a mountain live instead of looking at the same mountain on google for free? My time is more important than that!
Some of the survivor stories are pretty intense

If I was ontop of a mountain already dying and some stupid chink made a GNARLY vampire face to scare me I think I'd just be annoyed that I was going to die to this dumbass instead of the mountain

Because seeing it in person is completely different. Also you don't go just for the view
>>1047685
I'd be excited thinking that maybe just perhaps there's a chance that I will get to live on as a cool vampire instead of most certain death if left alone.
Cowabunga breh, being an adrenaline junkie is awesome

is there an usher up there urging you on to keep the line moving?

And there's a pile of mountain dew cans every 10 meters
>>1047670

Definitely right about the watch though
>>1047694
Because Everest climbing season is like 1 month or something. And even then you have to be relatively lucky to find a good day to climb on. So when the chance is there you are usually not alone.
>>1047705
>We'll still be around 30000 years in the future

Ah, of course, the Jews! I should have known those crafty devils would have a hand in this!
Everest is shit. It's like buying a Ferrari to drive it around town at 20 km/h.
>>1047641
Hahaha omg this is the most euphoric and most overweight post i've seen for a while.
>Communication, relationships, wealth, knowledge and power are the only important things in this world.

Helicopters aren't really that great at these heights.
>>1047711

Have you never heard of a thin atmosphere anon?
>>1047710
>get near the top of the Everest
>see Robert waiting for me with fresh, warm crab legs
Is there anything Robert can't do?
let's talk about how in the movie Everest, the main character Rob Hall looked like this IRL, which does resemble Josh Brolin, who is an actor in the film, but DOESN'T play this guy. He plays some other guy. And the guy who plays Rob Hall doesn't look nearly as similar to Hall as Brolin does...
Even more because irl you don't have movie physics to make you an action hero.
That is all.
>>1047722
that film triggered me. He died because some idiot who wasn't healthy enough to get to the top refused to listen, and Rob Hall didn't want the guys death on his conscience
Here is Brolin (our guy) with a beard

'the fuck is with that womans face

>>1047731
oh that guy is awful
>>1047725
but he was a good mailman he didn't do no wrong
Homer climbed a mountain that was like twice the height of Mount Everest and happened to be just outside Springfield and he made it so it can't be THAT hard
>>1047653
I'm pretty sure he's talking about radiation friendo.
>>1047736
Homer's a Gary Stu. Ask Frank Grimes.
>>1047736
Get down so fast would have killed him. You can't change altitude that fast, the human body isn't strong enough to support that kind of thing.
>>1047737
he would've said radiation not microscopic space debris, that's pretty specific
>>1047739
The fact that he survived proves you're wrong
>>1047740
>flying around at light speed
Can't be matter so it's radiation.
>>1047661
Why can't they just send up robotic rovers and/or drones to retrieve the body?
>>1047743
Because they cannot bear the weight of the Ring and the Nazgul would catch them anyway
>>1047626
Dude it's a rich people "sport"
The hardest thing about it is paying the travel agency
Not to mention buying all that gear, dehydrated food, renting a helicopter, paying the sherpa etc..
Meanwhile these tibetan natives literally run circles around these cucks and nobody ever gives them credit for anything because they aren't white. Mountaineering is a joke
>>1047745
Mountaineering isn't a joke, but the Everest has become one, as well as most people that do it.
>>1047745
Sherpas die all the time you racist fuck
Why don't they just build stairs to the top?
We literally got /out/
wow, mods actually doing their jobs for a change

>>1047626
It's dangerous in different ways
Dehydration, poor shape, poor cardio etc...
Also Brain and Lung Edema
And past some height you start progressively losing sight irreversibly, but it takes years to take a toll on you
who /tv/ here?
>>1047785
Could you please go back to your containment board and never return?

life's too short for inactive loser activities like watching kin- I mean movies or tv shows because those can never match the experience of the wild untamed outdoors
woops my satellite phone is dying gotta log out
>>1047748
People become very stupid due to the thin air, so that would be hard to do.
>>1047787
What a cringe-inducing post. You seriously need to fuck off to reddit, bitch boy.
>>1047786
we make your content faggot
This thread surely moved fast. Anyway I always find funny that retards complain about mountaineering and high peaks like Everest because it doesn't fit their interest, capabilities or wallet. Guess what people take enjoyment in different things, if some people can do those things good for them, even if they're spoonfed by sherpas, tour guides and papa's trust fund.
As for the danger, well obviously it's a great amount of it but that's part of the fun. But seriously, /out/ gets more /in/ as the time gets by, any kind of adventurous activities is frown at.
>Hur dur you need xxxx to go hike
>Hur dur don't hitchhike in Europe because mudslims will fuck you up
>Hur dur always have a gun in the woods because niggers and bears

>>1047739
Then how does sky diving work
Even though they start at lower altitudes, the change is still drastic.
>>1047791

It's dangerous enough for people who are retarded enough to climb mountains. The highest I go is above the scrub line when hunting tahr.

>comparing Mt. Everest to all mountaineering.
Not even 1% of mountaineering is on everest.
kkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
>>1047764
>losing sight
Is it because the uv rays are much more intense up there? If so, cant it be negated through protective gear (i.e. Sunglasses)? Or is some other biological process going on?
>>1050794
might have something to do with how dry the air can be
>>1047744
lol
More dangerous I'd say. People under estimate the outdoors because they project on them some documentary reality. Even a relatively simple hike in medium mountain during the good season regularly kill ill prepared people.
pic related start of a hike
>>1050794
No its because little tiny minuscule edemas happen somewhere in the eye and over time they add up and you end up losing sight. It is related to height.
Some mountaineer doctor explained it to me, I dont remember the details
>>1047669
Lmao you dont get it at all

My inner philosopher is triggered lol, technically i know youre right. but ive built this jacked body over 20 years and i really do feel at peace on windswept summits well above the treeline bathed in the stupendous infinity of the firmament. Thoreau does a better job at describing this than i ever will in Walking and Walden, John Muir couldnt have been entirely wrong about the mountains
