How have you're encounters been like with these fuckers?

helpful and nice?

Or dicks with a bone to pick?

Stories encouraged
>>
>>1047483
Always seemed fine with me, but then I don't act like a dick to them.
I've always been a bit curious as to why none of them have a tan...
>>
Since I actually go off the trail I never encounter them
>>
>>1047483

>1 week walk from trailhead
>see one person in the last 4 days
>think we’re alone
>set up next to water to do laundry
>got clothes on the line
>hit the travel bong, lean it up against a tree
>chillin
>suddlenly, rider in camp
>It’s the legendary backcountry Marlboro man/ranger
>”You boys aren’t camping this close to water?”
>friend freaks, looks at bong
>Me, “No sir, just a day camp to wash”
>whip out map
>”By the way, can you suggest a route?”
>Police mode changes to backcountry guide mode
>”Sure boys, you should go this way”
That motherfucker sent us over some seriously sketchy cornices
We had to hoist packs with rope
He probably laughed at us for days

Once I took a shortcut through an eagle nesting area.
I saw two rangers in the distance and started moving away
Then I saw 6 walking through a field towards me.
They gave me a patdown and took my bag but did not handcuff me.
$70 fine for trespassing.
I was polite to them, and they were polite to me. They apologized for the inconvenience and I apologized for trespassing. They escorted me about a mile back to the trail, and we talked about snowboarding on the walk.
And by once, I meant yesterday.
Not even kidding.

Rangers dont have to deal with as much fucked up shit as cops, so they seem nicer in general.

Doc ranger here, don't break rules and don't be a dick. Simple enough eh?
>>
>>1047593
This. When you encounter rangers, let them search you, give them all your money, appologize and return home
>>
My dream is to become a ranger one day. I was just wondering if anyone here knows any of the prerequisites to becoming one. All the ones I've seen have said about wanting experience but nowhere says how to get it.
>>
>>1047622
don't forget to applaud when they're finished with you
>>
What's the main difference between Park Rangers and Forest Rangers anyway? I know NPS is Department of the Interior and FS is USDA, but do they operate differently?
>>
>>1047754
department of the interior guys are much bigger faggots.

i run into the guy who patrols pictured rocks area in the UP a couple times a year. never once pleasant.

last year i was on a road that leads to a campground. there is a cleared out area off the road that leads back to a small lake. I decided to park there to walk to the lake (well off the road). guy comes along and sees me heading back there and spazzes out telling me to move or he's getting my truck towed.

another time i got yelled at for having my dog with me in my boat (???)

another time i got yelled at for being over the boat's recommended weight.

another time i got yelled at for coming off the lake too late and was waking up campers or something.
>>
>>1047617

What's the worst shit you've seen from campers? Ever issued fines?
>>
>>1047754

I actually work for the USFS. Similar roles now, though back in the day a forest ranger was also a firefighter, and a forester and a wildlife biologist, ect. in addition to the law enforcement role. Now usfs employees don't have to wear so many hats, so the rangers just deal with recreation and law enforcement, while the science and timber stuff is handled by "Forestry Technicians."

Other than that, one patrols the forest, park rangers patrol parks.
>>
>>1047617
Found the statist cocksucker.
>>
>>1047483

I worked for NPS for a few years. The tree cops were either there because they wanted to be Park Ranger or because they wanted to be cops.

Half the people I knew were in it because they wanted to move onto being fire fighters/EMTs, smoke jumpers, SAR people and this was an awesome route to go. You got trained by Dept of Homeland Security as you were basically federal cops. I knew one guy who worked on Lake Mead and had lots of stories of Mexican drug smugglers and shit. Another dude eventually joined the Coast Guard doing helo extraction. Several others got out of government work and focused more on education and rescue. That's where the cool shit is, pulling people off mountains and out of the ocean, though most of the time you're responding to sun stroke and fat tourists who didn't care to read the signs saying "DANGER".

Of course the other half were in it for the power trip and the ability to carry a gun. They wanted to be cops and were just about as smart as them as well. They didn't give a fuck about the outdoors, education, stewardship, or the American people. Those people are fucking tools. They'd always be ready to tear into someone and throw their dicks around for the smallest shit.
>>
>>1047771
Probably shit and tampons on the floors of cabins, foreigners just don't give a fuck and shit inside where it's warm. It's always the germans aswell.
Also seen a kiwi that was shot with a .22 and zip tied to a fence.
>>1047784
Can you explain what those words mean I'm not an educated man.
>>
>>1047790
Are you referring to the bird, the fruit or the commonwealth resident?
>>
>>1047790
Germans have a fetish with shit, all that country is fucked up. Maybe that's why they're importing so many shitskins.

>Kiwi shot with a .22 and zip tied to a fence
Was he dead or was left there to die? Kiwis are tough cunts, of course some american coward had to shot him.
>>
>>1047483
Out jeeping in Death Valley National Park, Eureka Valley (middle of nowhere). Coming out of canyon on single lane road see ranger in bronco coming up, do polite off road thing, move over a little and pull in mirror. Ranger stops me and says (pissed off voice) "do you know I could give you a ticket right now for driving offroad?" WTF am I supposed to do? Ranger regains composure "I guess you had no choice". He's carrying a 12 ga. and AR and I'm assuming a sidearm. Think to self, should I even be here if he has to be armed like that? Never buy multi-agency pass again. The public is the enemy to those people.
>>
>all these Park Ranger stories but no Forest Ranger interactions
Do they just not give a fuck unless you're a hunter?
>>
>>1047804
Never had a bad interaction with USFS personnel. Would run into them when getting firewood, just wanted to see permit. After a couple times when they saw I wasn't a dick they'd clue me into where the best places to get wood were.
>>
>>1047794
The bird
>>1047796
Nah, the zip tie was dug in to the bone, somebody had shot him then tied him alive and he stuggled for a couple hours at least. But the worst part is IT WAS A NO RIMFIRE BLOCK!!!

Really rubs me the wrong way when you have to build signs all day that say "open access area; NO RIMFIRE" only to have some cunt use a .22
>>
>>1047804
Forest rangers don't care about hunting, they are fee processors who skim $ from loggers, miners, ski resorts, and communication companies
>>
>>1047821
The fuck we do, our money comes from our bosses, they're the ones fucking over other people.
>>
>>1047804
I've had exactly 2 interactions with USFS Rangers.

One was very, very positive. The other was very, very negative.
Positive one
>Hunting BLM land in WY
>hunting elk as nonresident, got lucky on permit draw
>wayy the fuck back in a walk-in-only area
>shoot and process a decent 5x5, have it quartered, packing out 2 quarters at a time, have other 2 strung up a quakey
>holy. shit. I. hate. altitude, me flatlander
>totally gassed still about 8 miles from truck, stop to take a breather
>Ranger rolls up in 4-wheeler, stops about 100 yards out
>he's kinda giving me the "dis nigga alive or dead?" look as I'm slumped over against a tree
>asks if I'm okay
>yeah, just tapped out, catching my breath, have about another 25 miles of walking to do, probably gonna have to get rest of elk in morning
>asks me to unload rifle
>yo I tagged out, it's already unloaded
>cool, got any other weapons on you?
>guns no, I've got a couple knives tho
>eh I don't care about knives. Can I see your license and permit?
>hand them over, there's no issues
>Y'know the rest of your elk will be gone by morning, right?
>It's 15 feet up a quakey tho
>Not worried about bears anon, the injuns will steal it
>wat
>what indians?
>Wind River reservation. Surely you saw them posted up on every hilltop with spotting scopes, right?
>we're like 150 miles from the Wind River reservation tho
>yeah. They come out this far just to steal meat
>think back, yeah there were a few people around with no blaze orange sitting around glassing things, but it's BLM land figured they were just out looking around
>fuuuck
>Tell ya what. Throw the meat on the 4 wheeler, I'll help ya get it all
>do so, he drives me back to my truck, load shit in truck, he drives me back to the rest of my elk
>elk already gone, tire tracks from an actual truck all over the place, rope was just outright cut
>fuuuuuuuuck
>he's pissed, but not at me
>helps me recover what's left of my rope and drives me back to my truck again
>>
fuckin injuns
>>
>>1047898
And now for the negative one.
>backpacking thru Las Cienegas NCA
>being a good little backpacker, full-blown Leave No Trace
>2 days in
>turn a corner on the trail and there's a big knot of LEO's standing around a circle of handcuffed border hoppers
>CBP, USFS Rangers, a couple sheriff's deputies, and some brown people that just had "POLICIA" on the back of their body armor
>stop several hundred meters out
>they notice me
>the 3 USFS Rangers charge me at a dead sprint
>hands shoot up
>get tackled, flipped on my stomach, and cuffed
>immediately start getting yelled at in spanish
>but I'm white tho. Like, painfully, obviously, blonde hair and blue eyes, moonburn-prone white
>I have no fucking clue what they're yelling and they're yelling loud and fast enough they're either unable to hear me when I tell them I can't understand them (in english) or they're ignoring it
>one of them backhands me across the cheek
>ok now I'm pissed
>CBP guys eventually physically pull the USFS guys off me, get me sat up, help me get my pack off
>only now, maybe 10 minutes in to it, does anyone speak to me in English, and it's "you better not have any weapons on you"
>WHY YES, NOW THAT YOU MENTION IT, there's a big fucking pistol in an OWB holster on my backpack waist belt that none of you clowns seemed to notice at all. Not like it matters now since my backpack is 10 feet away and it's perfectly legal for me to have it here.
>ask wtf is going on, why was I tackled, why did the other guys hit me for no reason
>"sorry anon, everyone's a little high strung cuz of...[jerks thumb over shoulder]
>well good for you. Can I go now?
>no
>...okay, why the FUCK not?
>because we can legally detain you without arresting you for up to 24 hours
>get (gently) drug over to a tree and handcuffed to the tree
>get ignored for the next 3 hours until a CBP truck crawls up the trail, they load all the illegals in it, and everyone but CBP fucks off
>one of the CBP guys comes over and un-cuffs me
cont
>>
>in camp area with friend drinking beer
>get up to piss
>come back and two rangers are working over friend, searching his bags and shit
>walk up and ask what the problem
>ask where we got the beer (friend is 20)
>tell them it's my beer
>threaten to breathalyzer friend
>i make some smart ass comment
>all anger is now shifted towards me
>they search my bag and write me a providing to minors ticket

I guess they could have fucked us worse, but we were just sitting around quietly talking. The ticket was also listed under the same legal code as "possession of a controlled substance In a federal park" so I hope that doesn't fuck me over down the line.
>>
>>1047901
Continuation
>as soon as I'm uncuffed I pop to my feet and head for my pack
>"whoa hold up there sport"
>what now
>"Lemme clear your weapon. Not gonna take the ammo but don't re-chamber a round until we're gone"
>he does so
>Yeah, gonna need the full names and badge numbers of the Rangers that were hitting me for no reason
>"I don't know them"
>Okay, gimme contact info for your department, I'm gonna find out
>he looks kinda defeated, pulls out a notebook, writes HIS full name and badge number, department contact info, first name and extension for their internal investigation unit, and which field office the USFS guys were out of
>whoa. He must not've been happy with them either
>start to stomp off, still pissed beyond belief
>"Hey. Yeah, sorry about this"
>Give a noncommittal wave over shoulder without even turning around
>File formal complaint with extensive description against USFS, get called in for an in-person interview like 2 weeks later, hear nothing else for a month
>call back
>get a very terse "it's under review" response and get told that under no circumstances will I be contacted further regardless of the outcome
>basically got told to sit down and shut up because it got swept under the rug

Ranger jobs are pretty competitive if you don't fill a diversity quota.

Maybe you could consider some of the NPS's volunteer opportunities: https://www.nps.gov/getinvolved/volunteer.htm. Other than that...maybe timber companies need forestry people. I don't really know what other jobs there are in that area, honestly.

>sweet dreams
>wake up, watch the sunrise over the lake
>apparently there's a lake next to camp
>a pair of forest rangers appears
>is this your camp?
>Yes sir
>do you realize you're required to camp more than 100 feet from any bodies of water
>yes sir, I didn't realize I was this close to one. I got in late last night.
>Are you heading out today?
>Yes
>Alright. Just be more careful in the future.
>Remember, your water comes from this watershed. We all have to protect it.
Forest rangers have been very reasonable people, in my experience. They have plenty of work to do maintaining trails and the like, and would rather not waste their time on you if it isn't necessary.
>>
>>1049040
Seems like it probably has a lot to do with how they perceive you, i.e. you're an experienced /out/doorsman who actually knows the rules and not just some random touron who's gonna hurt himself and the environment around him
>>

If some beaners wearing "Policia" charged at me, I'd open fire. Hell, I'd open fire on a god damn Sherriff if he charged me for absolutely no reason, in the middle of butfuck nowhere.

This is why the majority of the time I'm out in the wilderness I carry MINIMUN my glock. Usually a Ruger Mini 14, AK, or AR

Know that you if you want to be law enforcement ranger, you cannot go through the federal law enforcement academy if you are more than 35 years old.
>>
>>1047902
I had a really similar experience in a national park, ranger was enough of a dick to write me an underage drinking ticket a week before my 21st (I was celebrating early because none of my friends could make it the next week). He did say that backgrounds checks typically don't go through national park databases so it most likely wouldn't be an issue.
>>
>>1047483
They were nice, polite, helpful and educational until they got guns. Now they are tattooed hard asses who went through law enforcement training with a holier then thou attitude. You are literally trespassing on their land.
>>
>>1047802
your multiagency pass doesn't work on many public land that is run by a concession. All the national forest around me is and it's a separate $50 pass.
>>
>>1049330
I think he lied to you, I'm under the impression tickets on federal land are felony. Guy I was riding with got caught on a closed road in national forest and got a felony trespassing ticket. lost his job because he cannot have a record.

Not really park rangers, but I have a lot of run ins with the "New Jersey State Park Police". Fuckers chase me around at least twice a month because they don't like it when i ride my dirt bike in the "pine lands nature reserve" which I have lived on or VERY near too my entire life. For probably the past 20 years they've been giving me a hard time about it. They even impounded my honda Cr 80 when I was 11. No matter how hard they try they haven't caught me since, so now I can just flip them off or call them pussies from a distance. Some days I go and ride in about 8 inch deep turn tracks in the nice gravel and grated walking trails just cause they piss me off. Fuck those guys. My back tire moving dirt around is literally doing ZERO damage to the thousands of square miles of eco-system there.

Local police have a new rzr now and they call in the chp helicopter when available. Why is it that we made laws and voted away public access to everyting. Why do we let government employees tell us we cannot use public land. oh ya liberals that's why no fun allowed gotta save the whales this week and make up another endangered species next.

This is selective enforcement you notice the property owners adjacent to the dry riverbed whose sand will recover from any moto tracks next time it rains have free use of riverbed with no consequence. As do the local police force who routinely drive through the riverbed.

I got into Arches national park a day after picking up some legal weed in Colorado. I wanted to smoke a joint so I went maybe 50 meters off the path and smoked a joint. Immediately, like no less that 5 minutes later, a park ranger pulls up and sits in the parking lot. I walked back to the parking lot as casually as possible all while this park ranger was glaring at me, which is pretty hard to do when you're high. As soon as I walked pass his truck he pulled out and left.

Could have turned out a lot worse. I think he knew but just didn't want to push the issue.

1, America isn't like a TV special. You see Americans clap on TV because they're in a performance venue. That's pretty much the only time Americans clap.

2, American cops might shoot you dead for no fucking reason, but they aren't out for bribes. They have much more complex scams. They see bribes as being below them.

One instance was to check our fishing licences real quick when we were night fishing for some catfish.

At least that's the one (so far) I saw in the wild. The rest I've met were in nature centers and the like. Were almost invariably happy to share the great outdoors and talk about it at length. I know I was told about some good fishing holes that didn't see much pressure.

Why is camping close to water bad?
>>
I had a ranger tell me a story about a bear fucking a moose
>>
>>1051807
Polluting a water sources with effluent runoff ??
>>
>>1051807
Because undergrowth along waterways helps to prevent nutrient overload in the waterway and an associated aquatic population boom, which can cause ecosystem imbalance or deoxygenation. Basically, plants along waterways help keep things consistent and balanced.

Camping hurts undergrowth and eventually eliminates it.

Also this:>>1051921
>>
>>1051807
Because everybody wants to camp close to water.
Then the area next to water gets trashed
All the plants get killed and then it is bare
And then this
>>1051943
People stepping on shit over and over again is really bad for a fragile ecosystem
Lower down, it's not so bad, but in the mountains there is a limited growing season, so the area has no time to recover
>>
>>1051943

>Camping hurts undergrowth and eventually eliminates it.

Agreed, camping should be banned, especially at state and national parks. Also go vegan and you won't want to waste your energy LARPing in the woods
>>
>>1047770
My worst encounter was at pictured rocks.
I ran from the rangers and hid for awhile until they fucked off.
>>
>>1052350
Camp at a designated area or an area already wrecked by previous campers instead of trampling and batooney chop-chopping your own campsite every time you leave your mommies house, dingus. Or camp 200 ft away from water sources.

>>
>>1047624
>>>1051807
If you want to work for the NPS, then be a minority.

If you are white and male, try for a state park service.

I am very qualified based on my work and education but the NPS would never even refer me. The first state park job I applied to I got. They even give me a house.

>>1047810

>>
>>1052599
They're the only "high capacity" rifle the aussies are allowed to have.

That rule is in place to keep people from going out and just blasting thousands of rounds randomly on public land, making a mess with their spent brass and zinging thousands of bullets everywhere.

>>
>>1052599
>>1052628
This is incorrect and the original poster was from New Zealand you dense fuck.
It's essentially to avoid larger game (e.g. deer) being shot with light calibers (e.g. .22lr) and causing prolonged suffering to the animal. Similar laws apply in a few US states
>>
>>1052684
Still like 90% white for new hires.

Again, you probably just suck.
>>
>>1052996
US here.

Literally nowhere I can think of has areas that prohibit the use or carrying of any single caliber outside of California's full-retard ban on .50BMG. We simply have animal-by-animal hunting laws, some of which are restricted to a range of certain calibers (IE, in Missouri you can hunt deer with any centerfire caliber but not any rimfire caliber, so you could legally hunt them with .14 Squirrel and its 3 FPE of energy but not .44 Henry Rimfire with its 68 FPE of energy, or Nebraska with its 6mm/.243" minimum bullet diameter for large game, or Indiana with its prohibition on bottlenecked rifle rounds for deer). But if I wanted to walk into the woods in Indiana or Missouri with a .22lr just because I wanted to, I can. And I can shoot it, to my heart's content, as long as I don't try to shoot a deer with it.
