Hey /out/, I'm driving from NJ to New Mexico in early August. What are some good hikes there? Any hidden gems? I'll have camping supplies, but probably not looking to be gone for more than a night.
Also, is it possible to camp with a tarp in that environment or will the bugs fuck me up? I'm from the east coast and don't really have to consider scorpions/snakes.
New mexico is huge.
What part are you heading to ?
I can tell you about the north rio grande corridor and thats about it.

No specific part, just planning to roam the west for a week, do some hikes and see some sights.

I've lived in New Mexico for the past 24 years. Was in Jersey before I came here. Trust me OP. If you are coming that far, go a few more hundred miles and spend your time anywhere in Southern Utah. New Mexico can be cool, but Utah is so much better.

>camp with a tarp
I never camp anywhere with a tarp. Bugwise, you should be ok, but man, there is no friggin' way I want to wake up with a snake anywhere near me. ALso, it's usually the sun that wakes me u[p in the morning, so using a tarp would just wake me up that much sooner. I usually stay up late star-gazing.

If youre gonna spend some extra time in the Southwest. Come down to Arizona and stay a while.

Maybe when it cools down a bit to a point where human beings can actually function...
