Hey /out/, I'm gonna be going here for an extended backpacking trip pretty soon (first time ever coming to Yellowstone).

This place is huge- other than obvious touristy things like Old Faithful, etc. which areas should I make sure to see? What are your personal favorite backcountry campsites? General trip planning advice would be much appreciated.
>>
Ayy Im going to yellowstone tomorrow. My first time as well so sadly no advice

Do you have backcountry sites reserved? If not you'll probably be SOL

Honestly Old Faithful wasn't that impressive, but walk the geyser field boardwalk. Some really cool smaller ones there, pic related. It also crosses a little stream that always has trout hanging out right by the bridge, they're fun to watch.

For me the draw is the animals. I went in early June last year, and camped out waaay out in the middle of nowhere away from everyone else. Woke up to a herd of elk trying to eat my tent one morning, and when I got out they just stood there like "wtf are you? Why are you interrupting our meal?"

Sounds like a cool experience.

If you want buffalo, Teddy Roosevelt NP can do better than Yellowstone. I went on a little backpacking trip there, on my way back there was a fucking herd of them right on top of the trail for miles in every direction, so I scooted between hundreds of buffalo for a few miles, very very carefully.

I've had 2 nice backpacking trips there, in the northwest corner across the Gallatins and the northeast corner, near Hellroaring mountain. The park is fucking huge, you're not going to do the whole thing justice in 1 (or 2, or 5) trip(s). If you're at all like me, you'll enjoy yourself a lot more if you spend less time at the famous tourist destinations and more in the backcountry.

Lots of asians. Lots and lots and lots of asians.

YNP is a lot like a little Wyoming - some really cool spots with miles of nothing inbetween. All speed limit 45.

Traffic will pile up for every animal on or near the road. Another yote? Another traffic jam.

>Old Faithful
I thought it was kind of cool. Lots of people there though. (Just like every other attraction).

If you're trying to get away from people, the park really isn't your best bet. There's lots of other NF areas and trails in that region that won't have the amount of people.

>Pic related taken from my motorcycle in the park. She had two cubs behind her.

Not to say it's not cool, or not worth a visit. Because it's 100% worth seeing.

But one day through the park was enough for me.

Go off-season and it's fucking amazing. I didn't even visit Old Faithful because that was the only place there were crowds. Had the whole fucking park to my self one day - only person I saw all day was a park ranger drive by. This was early May.

USA YES

The backcountry of Yellowstone is NOT for beginners. Bears and bison there lack a fear of humans and could give you issues that you wouldn't experience outside of a park. Hot springs are a hazard if you go off trail.

This.

And the bikepackers. Those fuckers are a goddamn menace that refuse to get off the road every couple hours, so if there's a pile of them going through Yellowstone expect to be driving 3mph the entire time as they have 9000 cars backed up behind them.

Another cool little geyser/hotspring from the Old Faithful field.

OP, yellowstone is not a park for backpacking. Its flat, heavily forested, and the geysers, while cool, are packed with tourists. Traffic is ass. Not worth it, IMO

You're fine though because yellowstone is literally right next to four backpacking meccas:

the beartooths
grand teton NP
the wind river range
grand targhee (the idaho side of the tetons)

pic is wind river

Enjoy getting fucking shot by a drunk tribal cop even though you're not actually on the reservation.
>tfw had a tribal cop pull you over 3 miles north of Dubois (~45 miles off the reservation) and he smelled like a damn brewery and outright asked for a bribe

This. You should be reserving them ahead of time.

If you can get it I did Canyon to 7 mile hole to Mount Washburn and back and had a great time.

7 mile hole sites are pretty cool, you're right next to the river in between a bunch of thermal features way down at the bottom of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. Top of Mount Washburn is awesome too.

You have to get out into the backcountry to get away from the crowds.
