sorry m8. My love of them was kindled as a wee lad living in Biloxi.

Fortunately I live within walking distance of a public access on a fairly major river. I can (in theory) take 150 mudbugs a day but average around 40 across my 12 traps.
>>
>>1037072
Not sure if it's a matter of can't or won't, but yeah. They don't spawn in warmer waters. Might have something to do with survival rates of pike fry being higher in colder water or something.

I just moved from Alberta, where I used to fish for trout and mountain whitefish, to southern Ontario. There seems to be lots of bass and catfish in my area. I heard bass go for just about anything, what do catfish like though???
>>
>>1037312
The best for catfish is live (flatheads, big blues) or cut (everything) baitfish.

Punch/dip baits work for channels and blues and is convenient, but is messy and stinks horribly. They generally don't work for flatheads.

Nightcrawlers will catch pretty much any species of catfish, but you have to figure out a way to keep the bluegill/perch away from it.
>>
>>1037312
channel catfish like cutbait and live crawdads/crayfish.

Bass will hit anything, just pick up any lure
>>
>>1037310
Bass won't care
>>
>>1037312

bass literally do not give a shit, ive had lots of success texas rigging soft crawfish in bright colours (chartreuse or sapphire), just fish slow especially on hotter days here

catfish will eat anything, live crawfish are good and chicken liver or anything organic that smells like shit
>>
hi. i haven't fished much. went kayaking down a river saturday, and had a great time. my cousin let me use one of his poles, and i caught a 1lb perch. we cooked and ate it on the bank. it was a really interesting experience.

so can anybody so inclined point out some good beginner resources for light fishing? best equipment, how to clean a fish, what to do after you've caught a fish, how to properly cook a fish outdoors, etc.? any good advice you wish you would've gotten before you started?

i don't plan on going out and trying to catch 50 a t a time, but being able to go out to the woods and catch lunch or dinner would be awesome.
>>
>>1037318

I like to use chicken gizzards for cats if fo some reason I'm not going to use live bait, it stays on the hook well.
>>
>>1037339
Yeah those work pretty well (as do chicken livers), but they're fairly expensive (a quarter each) and sporadically available since I live somewhere predominantly white and white people really don't eat them so they have no other commercial usage.
>>
Just moved to the Richmond, VA area from south Florida. Any recommendations on places to fish from the bank?

The James River is an obvious one but I've tried a couple spots and had zero luck so far trying for catfish. Pretty much the only fish I've caught since the move were sunfish on a handline

Also any tips for river fishing in general? I mostly fished small, slow flowing canals in south Florida so the river doesn't make any sense to me yet
>>
>>1037336
Best to ask your cousin, like what lure/bait was used on what setup
Generally crappie fishing applies to any light fishing. Id just get a cheap rod+reel and spool it with 6 lb mono and tie some cheap lures at the end and get out there.
Crappie lures like a jig head with some plastic lure like a curly tail grub is cool.
Slapping a bobber on the line would allow that jig to just stay off the bottom.
>>
>>1037344

would appreciate some river fishing tips too, especially deep ones fishing from shore.

i fish the rideau river in ottawa (normally below the black rapids lockstation for anyone in the area), never had any success fishing from the shore facing the river, but normally hitting weed beds and calmer backwaters gives me results, but i see plenty of dudes walking around with bucktail jigs and whatnot and the only thing open right now is pike
>>
>>1037344
A river has spots to fish unlike a canal which is basically uniform. Focus on deep pools, where fast moving water flows and calms down, and/or cover.

IMO if you're not wading and moving around it's not river fishing. Unless you know one spot is good and just want to set up there. Spots like this are like at dams which are typically hot somewhere around it.

>>1037200
try shortening the distance between your weight and your bait, if they are far apart they will waste energy spinning around eachother instead of flying. the other thing is, look up the pendulum cast.
>>
>>1037351
Suppose you're gonna bitch that we don't eat chitlins, hogs feet, and grits too now.
>>
>>1037348
80% plus of the rivers in North America cannot be waded along 99% of their length due to either current or depth.

For example I live within a reasonable drive of the Mississippi, Missouri, Big, and Meramec rivers. At no point within a reasonable drive are any of them wadeable. The Mississippi and Missouri both have current too strong to wade in the few spots that aren't 6' deep within 1 foot of the shore and all of them are primarily deep and steep-banked (for example the Meramec near me is between 5 and 25 feet deep within 18" of shore with a 40-60* slope or outright bluffs leading to the water)
>>
>>1037358
Oh so you're talking about big rivers. I'm not familiar with those really. I fish one that is connected to a bay but it's pretty manageable up here. Fortunately not a muddy bottom either. In that case look for dams again and look for good spots on maps where it calms down on the side but stays deep
>>
>>1037336

Are bubba blades worth it? I need a new filet knife since I lost mine during a fishing trip.
>>
>>1037373
I wouldn't know about bubba blades, I've never owned one, but the best fillet knife I've ever owned is the Helle Fiskekniv. Runs about $80-90 retail.
>>
Can you use spinfishing rod also for float fishing or is that generally a bad idea?
>>
>>1037373
The bigger ones are okay for catfish but they're all overpriced for what they are (basic-bitch chinese 420 stainless) and the handles can get in the way on smaller fish.
>>
>>1037368
Yes, but the same applies to most creeks east of the Mississippi and almost all small rivers more than a dozen miles from their mouths/deltas anywhere in North America.
>tfw have one creek running through my farm property
>narrow enough to jump over without a running start
>sheer banks and it's 15' deep with strong current
>soft mud bottom
And by strong current I mean shit goes downstream faster than I can run at a dead sprint. I've lost quite a few wood ducks that way.

Definitely give it a shot. I mostly end up using a lighter on worms that I wacky rigged since the fuckers nearly rip them in half off the hook.
I will say it makes them move in the water differently with less or more tail action depending on where you have to melt them back together.
It's pretty unique really.

The bad news
>TFW no GF
Iktf

The good news:
Getting a gf is a skill just like fishing is. You learned this; you can learn that.

The other good news is that you do something familiar that makes you happy. Women get that, respond to it, and are fine with it.
Women love to fish. Especially if you can help them out and get them catching something-it doesn't even matter if it's bluegill. Go easy mode, get some worms and get her catching stuff. Remember these key words:
>light
>easy
>fun
Don't go all day, don't do anything complicated, move if you're getting skunked, don't get mad if you don't catch stuff, and if she outcatches you be gracious and roll with it. Take pictures-she LOVES pictures. Bring baby wipes so she can get stinky fish slime off her hands, sunscreen so she doesn't get fried and beverages so she stays cool.
It isn't that hard. You can do this if you try.

Oh definitely. I had to replace the bomber hooks after catching an aggressive 2 pounder. I replaced them with some mustad trebles and it was doing great.
Personally I'd rather use the bomber over any of the KVDs is because they are physically smaller, and you can run them more shallow.
I've had success cranking them around a foot deep over weed beds where even a KVD 1.0 would get snagged.

I inherited one from my father in law after he passed. He had it since 2000 fishing the NC coast and it had spent another 5 sitting out in a shed. I've been using it the past 6. Recently landed a 19lbs carp on it.
>>
>>1037554
Maybe some of their reels are better than others, but I'm not buying their bargain-basement reels ($35-110) and they're consistently failing on me. It's not me either, the ONLY other reel that's ever died in my possession was an antique spincast I inherited from my grandfather and it only failed because it was already damaged when I got it. Literally none of the HUNDREDS of other reels I've used have outright broken, I either lose a part during maintenance or upgrade and resell. And this includes some cheapo Shakespeares and Quantums.

Now, I have used some of their high-end reels and those are good, but I get the feeling they're taking the Abu Garcia approach to reels--IE, nothing under $100 is worth a shit.
>>
>>1037544

Kind of. I've been doing the Ancestry.com thing and realized that after you get to your great grandkids or so, you become- at best- an idea of someone that once existed. None of them actually remember you as a person. My dad only remembers his own grandma as "the toughest and meanest bitch that ever lived."

Especially these days as families are smaller and more spread out. I have 15 aunts/uncles (before getting into their spouses) but only really deal with 5 to 6 of them.

The exception being if you did some great accomplishment, at which point someone's going to remember you anyway as a name on a plaque or something.

And I'll always remember my aunties, one of whom lost her only son and the other who never married/had kids as my second and third mothers.

So having kids as a means "to preserve my legacy" is not something I put much stock in. Frankly, I'm more concerned about having someone to take care of me in old age, but even that is a crapshoot. We're saving up for that reason.

She hits 28 tomorrow and hasn't shown signs of changing and has encouraged me to get snipped but has agreed to wait a couple more years. Her parents were older when they had her and she does not want to repeat that.

/end blogpost
>>
>>1037566
I feel you on all those points. I never knew any of my great grandparents in person and all my grandparents were already geriatric by the time I came around, since my family tends to have kids later in life.

My family also tends to not have a lot of kids. I only have a grand total of 4 aunts/uncles and their spouses, 3 of my 4 grandparents were only children, and I'm an only child.

By preserving your legacy I meant "teach your kids cool shit so they teach their kids cool shit so it survives a few more generations and your descendants maintain a love of [whatever you love, I'm assuming /out/ shit]", not to be individually remembered.

I'm 33 and will never have kids of my own, got hit in the nuts too many times in the military. Wife and I are looking into adopting, but we'll see how that plays out. Anything much past 30 is really pushing it socially for starting to have kids, and anything past about 35 starts running health risks for both the chick and the kids.

On a side note, I don't understand how some families can consistently have children young.

I've got a coworker who's in his late 20's. His grandma is like 55, and all of his great-great grandparents are still alive. He's got 3 kids, the oldest of which is a tweenie. Odds are good his great-great grandparents will live long enough to be great-great-great-great grandparents assuming his kids keep up the family tradition.

Like, that averages out to every member of their family shitting out the first kid at 16.

What went wrong with your sahara reels?

I had 2 that I bought off craiglist that was "broken" but I opened them up and did some cleaning/messing with the gears and grease the reel and they both run well so far

I use them to fish on the surf too and that takes a lot of abuse with saltwater + sand.

>>1037608
Depend on region and species. In socal, lucky craft flashminnow is #1 but that's a $20 plug lure. We don't have nasty fishes here so people don't mind with that. Daiwa sp is a cheaper alternative as a diving plug

Spoon is definitely a must have because sometimes it's so windy, nothing can be casted except a spoon or bucktail. In my experience, spoon is lower on the "attraction" power compared to a crank or soft plastic. However, when fish is active and frenzy and don't give a shit, I prefer spoon since they are cheap and durable.

Other must have include gulp sandworm, soft plastic minnow swimbait/jerkbait with a light jig head or weighted swimbait hooks for shallow flats, and bucktail. If your area have fishes that hit topwater, maybe a popper or a spook might also be included

you have any issues with the brakes on the Curado making a loud ass sound as the spool starts to slow down on long casts? Shit pisses me off so much. I figured out that if I put that fine tune thing on 2-3 it stops it from doing that but I loose casting distance. Haven't found a solution other than that yet

Whatever you want to do with it. Any decent baitcaster will be good for bass techniques imo, besides maybe big swim baits and A rigs. I worry much more about rod and line when setting up a rod for a dedicated technique.

I got mine for saltwater fishes and it will launch 3 inch paddle tails with a 1/8oz jig head.

>>
>>1037660
Yeah it hasn't happened to you then. You would for sure know what I ment if it did. I believe what is happening is when I cast the brakes swing up as they should to slow down the spool but when I thumb it a little towards the end they stay stuck in the up position and make a really loud and obnoxious rubbing sound that I can't describe with words. It only started doing it after chucking baits for a little over a year. Maybe I should put the extra brakes that come in the box on and see what happens

Anyone got any advice on Lake Mead? I used to fish with my dad a bunch in upstate NY but since getting stationed here I haven't been out fishing in a year or so.

gear down, finesse small baits. Something dark to create a silhouette in the murky water and some kind of noise. Shaky heads are my go to on rocky or gravel terrains. The lead head of the bait makes the right amount of noise to allow fish to hone in on it. ball headed finese jigs work well. I would pair it with something like a small chatterbait or spinnerbait to cover water til you find where the fish are located then hit it with a bait you can work the area with slower.
>>
>>1037879
I never fished them, but there's small ponds and shit all over AZ that I used to jump shoot ducks off. Can't imagine they don't have fish in them, and most of them are public access.

>>
>>1038167
You should have chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, inline spinners, squarebills, buzzbaits, and jerkbaits at all times, in at least 2 different bright colors and black each.

Should be able to get all of it for about $35 if you go for the cheap-but-decent brands.
>>
>>1038167
Newbie here. Chatterbaits definitely produce. Haven't had much luck on spinnerbaits or inline spinners except for dinks on real small inlines. From my personal experience, the 3/8 oz chatterbait in "Candy Craw" got me six fish in three trips, varying from 8" rock bass to 20" largemouths.

This guy >>1038171 is right though. However I prefer to have baits in a brighter color (chartreuse, white, red, pink) and a more natural color (black, brown, green, fish/frog patterns). Same with soft plastics.

>>1038167
Different applications kinda. But you should get some inline spinners (Meppsâ„¢) because they are one of the most versatile spinners.

But anyway, if the water is getting warm, just remember that sometimes smaller is better. I always do better with those smaller 1/8oz Mini Chatterbaits and smaller spinners like Booyah Pond Magics or any others 1/8oz-3/8oz compared to the big 1/2oz+ guys.

>>1038178
Silver, gold, and chartreuse will produce fish in any water on the planet. Black will produce fish at night or on overcast/rainy days in any water on the planet. Without getting specific info about where and for what he's fishing, those are the absolute unequivocal unanimous bests to recommend.

Nothing better than catching a trophy size trout in a stream on 7' UL gear. Nothing more boring than spending $2K on bass gear to catch little 2-3lb bass in a pond that charges $10 to catch and release.

90% of waters around here that actually have bass worth catching in it are usually private stocked waters that charge $5-10 or more to fish in for a day. All of the public waters around here are usually overfished and you hardly catch any bass over a pound.

Niggers don't help much either. Every day the waters are stocked with any sort of fish, you see niggers and spics walking out with a cooler full of fish even though the creel limit is 6.
>>

The nigger (and other minority) problem is fucking epidemic pretty much anywhere.

I've bitched about it before, but
>have stocked trout parks (rivers, 1 massive impoundment that's boat-required) with daily limit 4, niggers and asians will walk out with double-fistfuls of stringers with 7-10 fish per stringer and sneak in so they don't even pay the daily fee
>county park ponds are stocked with catfish, daily limit 4. Niggers, asians, and bosnians will take up entire shores with their dozens-of-poles spreads and catch 30-40 fish, which they either keep in massive wagon-mounted coolers or in giant homemade fish baskets, and get super asspained if anyone else tries to fish within 50m of them, and frequently have 2-3 poles on each end set up with 80lb braid cast at an angle as far as they can with 6-8oz sinkers and multiple floats to foul the lines of anyone fishing within 70m of them
I tried going yesterday and one guy had hogged the ENTIRE shore all the way around the smaller of the two lakes with over 200 poles, and had brought a baseball bat to chase people off. Called the cops on him and was told he'd actually run off the game warden twice already that day with threats of violence and they would not respond.
>niggers and bosnians gill-netting county park lakes with fine-mesh nets
One of the park lakes had to be shut down for an entire year to re-establish the fishery after a group of asians gill netted the thing overnight with rowboats they'd carried in, and another had to be shut down and filled in because someone had poisoned it with around 40 gallons of antifreeze to kill all the fish, which they took for a fish fry (estimated at over 100,000 fish in a ~50 acre lake). Poison guy was caught and convicted. Baptist deacon doing it for a megachurch fish fry.

They were over 30" about 3 weeks ago. This one was maybe 18-20, possibly bigger.

We had a lil fluke/flounder hanging off the rocks the other day. Nobody tried to catch it. Was about 12" Starting teasing it with a kastmaster with the eely trailer. Thing was sticking it's head out of the water trying to get to the lure. Never seen that. Funny as fuck.
>>
>>1038366
I didnt know braid got that small. I dont use it though. Just mono. I figure if you're going that small with braid you should just go to mono?
>>
>>1038366
personally I'd go lighter if you can. Not sure how low braid goes.
6# braid is probably the size equiv of about 2# mono so you'd be fine. Braid doesn't have the stretch factor mono does though.
>>
>>1038366
For anything under 10lbs I try to find either a white braid or one of the fluoro coated braids. In clear water it WILL spook fish, and it will spook trout and walleye even in murky water.

I really don't see a reason to go lighter than 8lb, it's already the diameter of 2lb mono. Any lighter and it starts to become a real bitch to tie properly.

>>1038369
The major name brands go as small as 6lbs, and some specialty and asian-market brands go as light as 2lb. Although the 2lb is thinner than a pubescent girl's moundfuzz and is a royal pain in the ass to tie, and frays easily.

Damn, I wish they got that big here regularly because they put up a good fight, even as dinks

It can be, although most manufacturers will offer it in either green (standard spiderwire, powerpro, etc) or black (the various fused lines). Anyone else get this thing in their MTB box? Never in my life have I ever seen a lure quite like this. This has a electronics in it that make a chirping/subtle knocking sound when water completes the circuit between the two hook holders. Seems like an pretty extensive meme but maybe it will work. Might go and give it a shot this weekend

I'd imagine it'd have to be 1/8 oz or smaller though.

I doubt it but would the electricity in the water also effect the fish? I know fish studies use elector-seining for example. I guess it's not really enough voltage

>>1038431
Yes, ive seen it posted before. Id go with an underspin however, since it's a smaller profile. Id keep it small since we're not talking about big mouth billy bass here.
You could also try that spoon idea txliz posted, basically swap the hook of a spoon for a crappie lure like that
>>
Well, found out today that my Pfleuger President fly reel doesn't have a drag worth mentioning.
>take my 8 weight out to pester bass at dusk with poppers
>first cast, max distance, bass inhales it pretty much the instant it hits the water
>cool!
>reel in slack line, proceed to fight fish
>actually a pretty decent one (~4lbs)
>bzzzzzzzzz.....clickclickclick...bzzzzzz
>holy fuck does this thing have like 1 ounce of drag pressure?
>palming reel face with my left hand to add pressure since lol6lb tippet ain't gonna break
>20 minutes later land the bass

For a reel marketed as specifically for an 8-9 weight rod....what the FUCK. My 3 weight reel has more drag pressure. And it's maxed out. I played with it after releasing the bass for about 20 minutes and couldn't get it to tighten up any.

>>
>>1038429
I got one awhile ago and have never used it. I feel like it's a pretty big meme or only really useful when the fish are feeding heavily (the noises that is I'm sure it works fine as a regular crank).

>>1038433
You actually use the reel to fight fish? I always just stripped the line back to me.

>>1038445
Depends on how much I have stripped out. Since it was at the beginning of a long cast I had maybe a foot stripped, so it was faster and easier to just quickly reel it in.

I also don't normally hook bass capable of pulling drag where I live, 3lb ones are rare.

Flounder are shit fighter but taste great. That's why there's limit on them for keeping. One of the best tasting fish apparently and also have very high amount of flesh and very easy to clean/filet.

> fishing in the surf today
> light-moderate surf
> throw out my LC flasminnow memecrank
> fish on
> feel head shakes but feel kinda light
> no drag pull at all despite me leaving drag not too tight because braid and $20 lure with trebles
> must be a small halibut or a yellowfin croaker
> it's a 20 inches california halibut just 2 inches short of keeper
> fucker is so shit at swimming it literally body surf itself to the shore after getting hooked up

I've seen 13-15 inches croaker pulling drag when there's some surf that give them extra boost on the outgoing part if the surf. This flounder fatass can't do shit in water. He gives that extra effort flopping around on the sand when I tries to unhook him though. These guys aren't weak because they have serious muscle mass but their body isn't just aerodynamic for swimming. They are notorious for bending/breaking the free treble hooks on lure after being landed because they slam their body hard on them after being landed.

I really dont think it's a $60 reel. Like every sale that Dicks has (which seems bi-weekly) that reel is at least $30.

>>
>>1038706
I'd much rather have green sunnies in a pond than any other panfish. They're aggressive enough they control their own populations decently well and they're super sporty.

i'd rather have huge bluegill, anyone who's ever gone out with a 3 or 4 weight fly rod an gotten slab bluegill knows why

They don't get that big where I live, and green sunnies get every bit as big as 'gills do here.

Pumpkinseeds would be my #2 choice since they get even bigger than 'gills in the right conditions, but again they don't get that big here.

Right now i have the opposite problem.
My local pond is so full of stockie panfish that everything is 5" long and nobody fishes for them. All they do is pull out the bass and nothing else.

It appears my choices are either:
>start keeping 5-10 gills per day every single day
Or
>put a bowfin or two into the lake at night when nobody's looking
Actually, I would love to do that second option. Not just because bowfin are natural predators for the small fish, but also because they fight like demons and it would be funny to watch the local bassholes try to land a fish that actually fights back.
Only problem is the idiots will probably think they're snakeheads and kill them. And that would make me sad.

Take a J hook and go through the bottom of the tail right in the middle and poke it out through the top of its shell and cast it out. you can either bounce it around to cover more water but usually just letting it sit and do its own thing works best. If nothing hits after a few minutes recast in a new spot

Hey fags I'm trying to get into surf fishing in california. I really want to catch halibut.

So far I've only had luck with simple spoon lures but they don't seem to be working that well.

Should I use live bait? What kind of rig should I use?
>>
>>1038936
Spend $20 on a lucky craft flashminnow 110. Find spot where there's a dip (trough) in the sand or uneven sands. Throw it along there and catch fish. It's a damn expensive lure so I recommend against using it for rock area where there's snag. Hope you have good lines and solid knot tying skill. Throw it out, twitch so that it dive, then do slow Steady retrieve with the minimum speed that you can still feel tension and the lure action working.

If you are a poorfag, you can use soft plastic minnow paddle tail on a light jig head or weighted swimbait hook around 1/8 -1/4 oz. Big hammer swimbait would go well with the jig head. Zoom super fluke split tail or paddle, doa cal shad, or strike king caffein shad would go well with the weighted swimbait hook for weedless rigging. Steady retrieve with pauses for the paddle tail. Twitch and pause for split tail.

Return the ugly stil and pick up another Fenwick, 6' medium action. Throw some 8 pound mono on the spool. It will throw just about anything and the 6' size will set you carry and transport it more easily

Return the ugly stik on the sly and buy something not-shit.

The only Ugly Stik worth even thinking about using is an Elite, and they're still $20 overpriced for what they are (which is a barely usable hybrid rod with half the durability of a GX2 and a third the sensitivity of a F&S Inferno, which is $10-15 cheaper).
