something melting or not melting plastic has nothing to do with your skin. for example sulfuric acid does not melt plastic and various oils are known to melt plastic that are harmless for your skin.

plastics and polymers. it degrades all of em to (highly variable) degrees. what i've seen is that the more thin/pliable material the quicker it degrades- but that might be a function of the form and not the chemistry.
i don't know about leather, but i'd avoid it.
if you have any climbing gear, keep it completely separate from anything you'd use deet on or near.
