Post picture of your vehicle, ask questions, argue over what car to buy, and if 4x4 is even required, lust after Soviet dinosaurs, post interesting vehicles for sale in your area, etc

ORVs harm vegetation directly through trampling, soil compaction, and pollution. All of these impacts can be devastating to an area of the forest by resulting in fewer and less vigorous plants, reduced plant cover, lower plant diversity, adverse changes in plant species composition, and disruptions to natural plant succession and nutrient cycling processes. The loss of vegetation results in increased soil temperatures, with negative impacts to soil fauna, soil fertility, nutrient cycling, and hydroponic processes. Vegetation loss also increases the likelihood of erosion. The erosion of soil caused by ORVs impacts vegetation by exposing roots to potential damage and by covering vegetation on the downslope side of the eroded area.

Please stay on established paths.

I recently purchased a 2009 ford ranger FX4 and I want to lift it a few inches. I found some videos on YouTube that show a super easy and cheap way to do it. Basically all you have to do is instal some $60 brackets on the rear suspension and then Just crank the tension bars in the front suspension a little bit and you can get 2 easy inches of lift.

My questions is whether anyone knows anything about this method? Is this actually a viable option or would it damage the truck in some way or inhibit performance? Any information would be much appreciated.
>>
>>1033810
it is exactly that simple. it will change your suspension geometry and wear your tires out without an alignment afterwards but not so bad.

I've gone more places with 2wd than 4wd because like most people I drive on blacktop mostly. But when going /out/, not /out/ to the local parks and forests where everyone drives, I am talking /out/ where roads get traffic once or twice a year by vehicles, you are going to hit spots 2wd won't get you through. Eventually you get to spots 4wd won't even get you through. Snow fills deep ruts that you won't see. Add in above freezing conditions and rain and they are slopholes that you can't get out of but couldn't be seen because of fresh snow cover.
That's when a winch, good tires and lift kits come into play. Lift kits are general faggotry but get bottomed out deep in on a minimum maintenance road where only a track machine will pull you out, you'll learn fast.

Get 10 ply tires, not that 4 ply shit. Last thing you want is a flat 30 some miles out.
Remember to have every tool you could possibly need and any replacement parts you could possibly need.
Was in my /out/ing spot, weather was below 0°F, 15 miles from a town of 300 and blew a spark plug. Can't run a vehicle with a blown spark plug, at least if you want the vehicle to last past that drive. Turns out it's a very common problem with that make and model. It happened a month before as well. Should have had a spare and the tools but didn't.
30 some miles out on a minimum maintenance road trapping beaver, and got a flat. Didn't have a jack or the tool to lower the spare from underneath the bed. Lessons learned.

I have a 4WD with 10-ply tires, but rarely use it. Often you drive a hundred of miles on the pavement, but only need the high ground clearance for the last couple miles. That's why I drive pic related for most /out/ings. It gets more than twice the gas mileage compared to the 4WD, and is a lot quieter for the long part of the drive. I have driven it on very questionable roads, very carefully, and haven't had a problem yet. The trick is knowing exactly the width of your vehicle and where the tires are going to within an inch. When the road gets really tough, pull the mountain bike off the back and keep going.

It an UMM, a portuguese developed and made 4x4 vehicle. A fair amount of them were produced during 80s and 90s. They were adopted by some firefighter and military units and also by the agricultural sector. Unfortunately just like pretty much anything in this country it went to shit. Who cares for a successful economy when you can just go to the beach and enjoy the sun living on borrowed money.

I took my old Forster down trails jacked up jeeps wanted no parts off. Had cheapo knock off swampers on it and a set of chains to go with it. Still remeber back when I had a girlfriend that worked at a restaurant on top of Sugar Mountain. We had an ice storm and she called me saying she had to sleep at work because the switch back road was impassable. Well half a 5th of jack and a white knuckle drive I was at the restaurant to pick her up but she was too scared to ride home with me. Ended up spending the night with her and her co workers eating food and drinking booze.

4WD just means all four wheels spin. Laws of physics still apply, even in a subaru.
>>
>>1034276
Tires mean more then anything. My WRX outperforms 99% of jeeps, suvs, other Awd cars, etc in the snow. This comes down to me having decent tires. The car will perform very well off road, but make sure you watch the mileage on the vehicle. The timing belt and head gaskets are the main huge issues. Otherwise, I'd trust one off road any day. Especially with a lift.
>>
>>1034276
I loved mine, your gonna end up doing head gaskets since it's a fault in the engine design but if you're handy there is a tons of guides and how to's on the internet on how to do it.

>AWD vs True 4x4

This is a nonsensical question, Subaru is true 4x4 (well 2x2 since it's open diffs but so does most 4x4s). It worked great for me, plus foresters are comfy as hell and will take you anywhere. Make sure to get a model with the sunroof, it's huge on the Forester and really adds to the fun of driving it.
>>

>>

>>1034305
Well aware of headgaskets/timing belts.
No big deal for me.
Was concerned about ground clearance, lack of low range, fitting larger tires, lifting, and issues feeling underpowered.
>>
>>1034313
>lack of low range
Not an issue for me, I had the 5 speed version and 1st was low enough for me

>fitting larger tires
Depending on how big you wanna go this will be a problem. I ran 215/70 R16s on my 2nd gen without issue but any bigger would need a lift

>lifting
Didn't lift mine so i'm not sure.

>feeling underpowered
Stock? It's not a issue, big ass tires it will feel under powered

If your looking to build a jacked up hard core wheeler then I don't think the Forester is the right platform for you. A nice 2nd gen Jeep Cherokee would be much better for that. Forester is better for something you want to drive everyday that can go down some nasty trails if need be.

How does /out/ buy a good used /out/ vehicle?
I was see on getting a new Tacoma, but now I'm thinking I should get something sub $10k and not have to worry about scratches or anything. What would you recommend? I like Tacos, Tundras, and 4runners but also f150s(not sure what engines are most reliable). Any other suggestions? What get?
>>
>>1034526
Well, Toyota transmissions are gonna last forever. The tradeoff is that anything that isn't a Tundra is gonna have very little cargo capacity compared to its body size, and the transmissions are rough and inefficient for fuel economy.

I also believe the Tacoma and 4Runner are underpowered, although not by humongous amounts. I have a 2010 Tacoma and it's over-all a pretty meh vehicle that I paid way too much for.

It wasn't too many years ago that Ford was still using vacuum switches in all their trucks. They may well still be. They die frequently (significantly more frequently than "normal" switches), are harder and more costly to replace, and cannot be repaired. For this reason I am avoiding Ford products.

Recently retired my truck for a dual sport as well, both for exploring and commuting, at least until winter. I absolutely love my truck but I'm already having more fun on the bike than I've ever had with anything else. Not only is it more capable off-road, it's insanely cheap on insurance and gas, which makes it so much more inviting to just get up and go without worrying about cost, you end up wanting to spend literally every free hour riding and exploring.

Guys wtf. 4x4 can be "full time" or "part time" four wheel drive. The "AWD" (sometimes written "full time 4wd" in older models) designation means it has a centre differential before splitting power. 4x4 means it has 2wd, 4wd, and 4-wd-l. Low just means it locks the centre differential using the transfer case. Subrau "low range/ centre diff locks" are dependent on the model.

There?

Snag a Chevy or Ford work van (E350/E3500), throw a mattress in the back.

They both have optional part-time 4WD with good LSD's and low, some years were available as diesel if that appeals to you, and they'll basically do anything short of enthusiast-tier rock crawling or mudding with a competent person behind the wheel.
>>
>>1035774
any 4x4 van costs at least $10k around here because everyone wants them. the non-rusty ones are $15k and they all make you look like a serial raping killer.
>>
>>1035775
Still cheaper than a truck-frame SUV that's 4x4 and in decent shape.

Only other real option for cheap is a used pickup and a topper, although those aren't exactly the pinnacle of comfy sleeping in the bed and they take a pretty big fuel efficiency hit compared to a work van.

4x4 vans are rare to find - especially the smaller ones. they don't take lifting much easier but do haul ass for what /out/ wants/needs so i approve trying to find one.

truck frame SUVs are quite common but you're right about the bad condition that always plagues them. parts are cheaper and easier to find and they're easier to drive since they're optimised for driver and not cargo.
around Ontario (onterrible), you can find decent (mechanical condition, not aesthetically) 4runners, xterras, explorers, tahoes etc for under $5k.

Or you could just go with the /ORG/ meme of the Land Cruiser or Chevy Suburban / Ford Expedition.
>>
>>1035779
You're not sleeping comfortably much less living comfortably in a 4runner/Xterra/Exploder or any other "mid size" SUV, even with the rear seats totally removed, full stop. They may be competent offroaders but they are small.

Expeditions and Suburbans (or if you're willing to get 11mpg and deal with a 15+ year old vehicle, Excursions) work, but would still be pretty cramped living compared to a work van.

If I'm remembering correctly some of the old conversion vans were offered with 4x4 as well, although you're REALLY gonna hurt on gas mileage as most of them had carburated big block V8's, and haven't been produced in long enough the interior would most likely require a total overhaul.

I will never understand why people like Land Cruisers. 10-year-old ones still sell for $45k near me, and they're horrendously underpowered.

Another option would be to just fork out for an older van-based RV. Most of them were offered in 4WD, some of them even had lockers, and there's plenty of aftermarket for them since they're van-based. Although if you're worried about looking like a "serial raping killer" a 1980's Winnebago is probably worse than a panel van.

You can sleep comfortably with an exploder or 4runner if it's just one or two people. But more comfortable if you get the taco or ranger as the 6ft bed is much more helpful (as you mentioned about a truck with a cap).
You just gotta choose 2 from the following: gas mileage, comfiness, offroad capability with mods.

Expeditions and Burbs just makes them less expensive starting out and eats gas as you go on. Work vans are worth waiting around for, sure. But I'm just laying out the options for the anon here >>1035764

And as a last blurb, the Land Cruisers are really damn comfortable off and on the road. The FJ80s are very reliable and have the pre2000s engines in that they're not very powerful but last forever. FJ100s are not worth jack since muh pigfat IFS and on-road comfort. Any land cruiser after that (105, 150, 76, 79, etc) is just an option to be really comfortable on the road as well as off the road. Tay yodas have the meme tax and worse, meme tax along with diesel tax. But if you have the money, it can definitely work very well. Plus you pay less for insurance for some weird reason.

>>
>>1035795
>you can sleep comfortably with an exploder or 4runner if it's just one or two people
lolno. Not sure what the fuck's going on in that pic but my old exploder was exactly 5'3" from the back of the front seat with it in the full forward position to the trim on the back hatch, and the rear seats didn't fold flat (though they are technically removable). No fucking way you were getting a cot in there. And it's about 6" longer than a 4runner. Hell my current car, a 2013 Acadia, is under 5' from the back of the second row seats (they don't fold and are not removable without cutting the seat frames) to the hatch. And it's considered a "large" SUV.

So unless they made them roomier in the late 80's/early 90's it's not happening, and trying to keep a ~30 year old SUV running (remember, the requirement was "reliable") is enough of a pain as is.
>>
>>1035838
Read the third paragraph again. That's my FJ80 Landcruiser in the related pic as i tried to explain part of their value.

The first paragraph I was just stating that I have found those truck based "mini" SUVs comfortable. Naturally, comfort is subjective but I also have a very high tolerance for that in general, hmm.

>what makes you think you even need 4x4?
The "take me around the country" line. Even if you stuck exclusively to paved roads the odds of needing it in parts of the US are high. Like Wyoming and Montana.
>tfw got legit stuck in the left hand lane of I80 in the summer due to a MONSTROUS pothole I couldn't avoid because of a dickbag semi
>vans have decent ground clearance already
Some do, yes. However the newer or smaller work vans are pretty low for fuel efficiency and almost all of the conversion vans/minivans are as low or lower than most sedans.
>get a locker
Lipstick on a pig if you don't have 4wd. Pretty much anything you can get stuck on is gonna be slick enough you'll just scrape tread off your tires instead of crawling out without the extra traction from a second set of drive wheels.
>grip spurs
Because halving your fuel efficiency and totally ruining the on-road ride is totally worth it for anything other than an enthusiast tier mudder, right?

Bone-stock 1985 4Runner. It handles really well offroad/on unmainatined roads. I'm thinking of either basically "restoring" it to how it would have looked off the lot or putting a 3" lift in it.
>>
>>1036711
Wow a bone stock, mint 4runner. Those handle better than the 60s off road (maybe not the 62).

See if someone in Colorado will buy it for $15k. They can fetch that price nowadays with offroaders who have too much money / time on their hands.

I have a 47 year old Honda thats just a bit smaller than that.
Powered by a little 360cc air cooled fourstroke with 5 speed gearbox.

It's great for tight parking.
I just go in the space headfirst, then lock the steering so the wheels don't move.

Then I get out of, lift the truck from the back like a wheelbarrow and position it.
No messing about reversing, it saves years of wear from the clutch, and gives me a 30cm dick.
>>
>>1036711
I'd keep it original as possible.

Doesn't look like it needs much restorating. What did you have in mind?

I've gone the past several winters without using 4wd unless towing something or going properly offroad-not dinky gravel roads.
>>
>>1036679
I only drive on paved/gravel roads
>>
>>1034293
>4WD just means all four wheels spin
No, it means all 4 wheels are/can be powered by the engine. All cars have all four wheels spinning, otherwise your car is broken.

AWD is just better for putting down power when a tire might be slipping. You get double the contact area with the road (assuming the same tires) with which you can transmit power from engine to the road. You're in a FWD car and your front tires get stuck in snow and can't find enough traction? You better get out and push or dig. AWD does nothing for braking distance though, which is why you see overconfident/stupid Subaru drivers off on the side of the road more often than any other cars in winter.

>>1034168
The sliding as you've described is due to bad tires (likely all-seasons which are useless on snow). Any car on snow without proper snow tires will slip.
>>
>>1036791

Dude, you may be being a bit over dramatic. Mine personally gets decent mpg in town (especially compared to my old car) and has no trouble getting to 80 mph on the highway. It's been good for literally everything I do, including driving to work everyday.
>>
>>1036690
this is adorable
>>
>>1037170
>>1037002
The 81 was a four speed and had no trouble getting up to 60km/hr 35mph. That was the best cruising speed for it.

You could maybe get it up to 80km/hr 50mph flat out but the engine wouldn't be happy running that hard for long periods.
This was with six people inside. (Thank you based bench)

I think the non-turbo diesels are much lower geared than the gas ones.
I'd be going just over 60kph/35mph and when I'd let off the gas it would immediately start to slow.
It needs two more high gears for safe highway driving. And a turbo.
>>
>>1037192
Please don't say that, I work hard to cover it in pig blood and wood chips so my penis doesn't feel small.
>>
>>1037249
yeahhhh....about that.

A top end of 80km/hr is too slow to even be legal on most interstates and some highways in the US (we have minimum speeds here to keep old people and yuros from clogging traffic), and is asking to be run off the road most everywhere else because you're clogging traffic going 30-40km/hr slower than everyone else.

And despite these apparently "much lower" gear ratios they still have shit acceleration, I should not have to floor a V8 truck to be going more than 10mph by the time I clear an intersection on a 4-lane road. And they still have shit transmissions, I should not be able to chirp my tires in overdrive with an automatic transmission coming out of a dead stop without flooring it on level dry pavement.
>>
>>1037088
It's definitely not an XJ... But in every other country, this was jeeps continuation of the Cherokee... I bought it because it had a diesel engine and not some chrysler abomination under the hood... 10 years of basic maintenance and an alternator... I think it's doing aight.

fanboys, everyone.

Reliability means JACK SHIT if your truck can't do what you need it to do before it breaks. And the Hilux is the absolute least capable small truck literally ever made. It cannot tow, it cannot handle mud or dusty environments without extensive aftermarket upgrades, it cannot accelerate, it cannot stop, it has a lower cargo capacity than a hatchback, it has a lower person capacity than a 2-door sportscar, and it weighs half a ton more than every other small truck.

It's not really any more reliable than the literally dozens of other small trucks. While weighing more, having less power, having a rougher manual transmission or a significantly less reliable automatic transmission, and having absolutely ZERO creature comforts like a radio or AC/heat. Hell the last one I was in was a 2005 model year and it was never even equipped with seatbelts, much less airbags, and the entire electrical system would short out on a weekly basis despite being in the goddamn desert.

This is what I was getting at.
Hilux reliability is a meme because Top Gear.

Every light truck from the 80's and 90's is reliable and has something it excels at.
Except the Hilux, which excels at being average and "safe".
It's just good marketing. Like Volvo.
When you hear Volvo what is the first thing that comes to mind? Safety.
Toyota? Reliability.

Mitsubishi L200 - Most robust drivetrain and frame, most luxury options, easily tuned for power, best for towing.
Peugeot 504 - Light weight, 1.3 ton load capacity, best farm truck.
Isuzu Faster - Most reliable engine, good at everything.
Natsun D21 - Hilux, but better.
Mazda Rangero - who gives a fuck.

The transmission can have as many speeds as you want, the ratio in the differentials will allow for more low end torque and thus better rock crawling ability. If its fully open the wheels will spin too fast for it to get good traction. Slow and steady crawls the rocks bub.
>>
>>1034508
In the u.s.a. all vehicles made after 1971 must be equipped with seatbelts. Thats when they made the law forcing makers to include them on every vehicle. So since yours was made after that date its a requirement.

>>
>>1041556
Tacos and 4memers can do it, but it's hard on them and potentially dangerous. They lack the torque and brake size for towing at highway speeds, I found that out the hard way pulling a ~2000lb U-Haul trailer halfway across the US with my Tacoma.

If you're gonna be pulling that boat regularly I'd suggest a full-sized truck or large, truck-framed SUV. If you want to stick with Toyota then get a Tundra, the older, smaller ones still had V8's and big brakes and don't retain value nearly as well as Tacomas, should be able to pick up an '03 or '04 for like $4500.

As far as "need to" spend, not much. If you're willing to put up with all the age-related bullshit of older vehicles you can get used Chevy 1500's for under a grand.
>>
>>1041574
Alternatively if a 4Runner or Taco is more appealing due to its other features, you can get a trailer brake kit (either pneumatic or electrical) that will help a lot. They're not cheap, but they do work well.

Still won't help with the lack of torque above 30mph though. I was basically stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear going through the West Virginia mountains pulling that U-Haul. The engine just doesn't have enough ass in the upper half of its RPM range.
>>
>>1041556
Any car will tow a 1500lb trailer safely on level surfaces.
Yes, even a Civic.
>>
>>1041579
Ehh. I disagree.

Even on flat, dry, paved roads 1500lbs increases stopping distance so radically I'd be hard-pressed to call it safe.

Sure, you're not gonna break your hitch and lose the boat on the interstate, but I certainly won't trust tiny little brakes on a 2200lb car to reliably stop a 1500lb trailer on short notice.

Also, in case you haven't noticed, most places that have water aren't particularly flat.
>>
>>1041582
You can disagree if you wish.
If you're not comfortable with it that's also up to you.

But in reality it's not a problem to tow a small boat with a car.

In Europe people tow 20' caravans behind their VW Golf.
You can't go highway speed in the hills, trailer or no trailer.

Check fluid levels and tire pressure

Make sure you have a spare tire, run-flats, or tire repair kit. If you have a spare or repair kit, make sure you know how to use it.

Anything else depends if there is any regular maintenance coming up soon. Do you have an oil change coming up? Might as well do it now. When was the last time you rotated tires? Might be time to do that too.

They used to blow out tires at highway speeds constantly, leading to fatal crashes and vehicle fires (something else Ford has a nearly unbroken 40-year history with, with almost every vehicle they've made being recalled at one point or another about). It was due to improperly matched tires (Firestone A/T's, which weren't up to the vehicle weight but were OEM anyway--the tire itself was fine, they just put it on the wrong vehicle).

Any vehicle from 1999 isn't gonna still be on its OE tires so nothing for you to worry about.

I personally dislike Fords due to *still* using vacuum switches, which tend to fail somewhat more frequently than regular switches and are significantly more expensive to replace, but each model and most years regardless of brand have their own quirks and shortcomings so I wouldn't read too much in to that.

Back from overlanding throughout Northern Ontario (any part north of Algonquin and the northern parts of the shield is what is colloqially referred to as "North")
The first interesting part is the beaver's dam that is actually part of the trail and helps me keep water out of my cabin.
Same trail that leads from central Ontario up to Lake Nip. We have had a delayed snow melt along with heavy rainfall for the past month so the stagnant water has been really damn high. This little rut was around 1 metre deep and I would've been able to cross it if i had the appropriate door seals.

Unfortunately, 10 klicks into the trail and this was blocked off by a deep swamp overflow. so I had to turn back.

North of Algonquin has large "ATV" paths that are cut across crown land with permission by MNR (ministry of natural resources) that connects roads. Within every mile of highway between Nippissing and Sudbury, there are around 3 different trailheads that connect with eachother in this HUGE network of trails / rocks that are not documented. GPSs won't help you much because they wind in and out everywhere.

I love going through them because it's a different path every time and you can literally spend a month wandering around these trails going back and forth between them. Unfortunately, I only had a few days go go through them as I had a sense of direction to go around. I love just taking random small ones away from logging routes.

Due to these swaths of rock formations being crown lands, you can cut your own trails with permission and make them lead into the backyards of one of your friends / cottages.

You can also do any of this on the rocks:
>shoot legally in canadaland
>camp legally as long as you want
>start fires

And they're so far from general campers and people that you don't have to worry about anything. If you find one with a creekbed (one or two hours north of North Bay), you can reasonably live /out/ for a month subsisting off crayfish, riverfish, and just drink the creekwater. Just gotta go into town to occasionally get gas to keep you going.

Went to view a Land Rover today.
The ad said Defender, but the vendor admitted it was an older one with a "facelift".

I Was still interested in buying up to that point, so we went for a drive.

Definitely the worst car I've ever driven.
If someone had told me how terrible this car was to drive I never would have believed them.
It's nothing like I expected.
>>
>>1045131
They're rough and have no shoulder room, eh?

But they'll run into 200k and down the forests like needed and are the only acceptable "cube" vehicles besides the G-Wagons.

Where do you live?
>>
>>1043101
This is why I'm going to be joining that 4Runner life soon. Once my XJ goes to poop, there's no way I'll be able to justify another, so might as well dump it off before it gets bad and get a 4Runner.
>>
>>1045276
The shoulder thing was one of them.
Apparently you're not supposed to sit facing towards the wheel, but facing slightly inward, and your elbow is supposed to extend out the window, while you steer by pivoting your wrist up and down .

There is like 2.75" of room between the wheel and the door. Almost enough room for your knuckles.

The vendor had to explain all the car's quirks and the complicated systems for working them before allowing me to drive.

We met just after 4pm and as I left it was getting dark. So at least 4 hours of him explaining 'system' and technicas'.

Now I know all the 27 spots LandRovers leak oil, and that the gearbox drain plug uses a "English 1/2 inch wrench. Muy muy muy importante never a 13mm or bad things happen"
Also the drain plug is magnetized to pick up metal shavings caused by the oil being too low. But I shouldn't worry because the gearbox is "Kalashnikov" and can run without oil.

And that the way to know if reverse is engaged and not 1st is that the gear stick almost touches the dashboard in reverse.

Then came the time for me to actually drive. I broke a sweat just coming out of the parking spot.

I'm in Spain for the summer.
I just wanted a fun relaxed car to take to the beach and drive with the windshield down.
Then I'd sell it before going back home.
Big mistake apparently.

Is LandRover the ultimate autism car?

So will every other car made barring intentional abuse or very rare factory defects.

Everyone loves shitting on Chrysler engines but I have a 1964 Chrysler 300K with 433,000 miles on it (it was my grandpa's DD, then my dad's DD, from 1964 to 1998), and a Chrysler New Yorker that I got at an estate auction that has 815,000 miles on it that I can only assume someone bought new in 1968 and drove every day until he died. Both have all-original engines, and the New Yorker still has the original head gaskets and everything. Never been rebuilt.

Hell for that matter, my first truck was a 1995 Dakota that I bought used in 2002 with 118,000 miles on it. I drove it to nearly 300,000 miles before getting T-boned by a semi and killing it.

We had these in Iraq, the Brits brought them over and were trying to use them as actual combat vehicles until they realized a dude in body armor couldn't get the door closed once he got in because they're so narrow.

So they gave them to us to use as fobrunners.

Was hilarious watching all the city folk who'd never seen a manual transmission before try to drive them. I will say to their benefit they're harder to stall than every other manual I've driven besides some weird hodgepodge 1970's Audi wagon with an inline 5 cylinder and a 3-speed my buddy had in high school.

There is a big contrast between a LandRover engine and an American engine. (Let's ignore the V8 for now).
And a big contrast in terms of how the mileage is accumulated.
LandRover is s tractor and can't even go highway speeds.

American cars have large, balanced, stress free engines.

The LandRover has a 2.4 liter 4cyl at most, with extremely low gearing so the engine has to work a lot more than it would if it were bigger.

Any other Land Rover fags here?

98 LR Discovery 50th anniversary edition with a 4.0. I've kept it fairly stock performance wise. Really just an airtec snorkel, Hedman headers feeding into a Magnaflow exhaust. I did have the engine rebuilt about 40k miles ago too. Other than that, I've got the grill guard, and a Chicago winch, light guards, Hella light bar, Thule ladder and roof rack, and some Falken Wildpeak ATs for the shoes.

I got lucky and got this truck from a friend of mine who gave it to me as payment for replacing the shift cables on his car. I love this truck though. It gets me in and out of anywhere I want to go.

How much coolant does it drink?
Always carry a spare brake light cutout switch.
Be ready to clean the oil pan pickup screen.
Don't use Fram oil filter. Wix builds a little more pressure for the old Buick V8
Has the central locking system been disabled? One day you will wish it had been.
How's the ignition lock? Careful, that's a 475 dollar part.
I have a part number for a voltage regulator that will save you from the $350 Marelli replacement every time you get the alternator wet. There's a rumour of a Delco replacement, but the VR is still cheaper.
The heater core can be replaced without discharge the AC. Either way it's a 20 hour job.
When the ABS starts to fuck you into the ditch, take the wheels off and soak the stutter rings and sensors with penetrant, and tap the sensors lightly with a brass drift to reseat them. After a few times, just cut the sensor leads, remove the sensors and stutter rings. Take apart the instrument panel to remove the abs bulb, because the abs fuse also powers the OBD port.
Be sure to clean out the nipple where the sunroof drains.
The electrical locks can be fixed by re-soldering the bad connection on the control board under the kick panel.
Cruise control failure is likely due to cracked vacuum hoses. Don't waste any time on the electrics until the rubber is replaced.
Window regulators will break. Don't get the cheap replacement or it will break again in less than a year.
Tony Simonau is a fat lying thief.
Use NGK or Champion plugs. The cheap ones.
There is a fuel pump access hatch under the carpet in the center of the cargo area. Fuel pump replacement is a trail fix, assuming FedEx delivers to your trail.

Anything that bolts to the engine block is standard USAE threads. Most everything else is metric, except when its IPT or Whitworth.
The stock lug nuts are 1- 1/16" . Don't let anyone near them with any other size because the caps peel off and the replacement lugnuts cost about 40 bucks EACH.
Change the oil/grease on the swivel balls. It's a helluva lot easier than changing the swivel balls.
If the valve covers leak oil, the bolts are loose. The valve covers will leak oil. Snug up the bolts.
If the oil pan leaks oil, the gasket is fucked. It doesn't need a gasket. Remove the gasket the previous idiot installed and use permatex. Clean out the sludge in the pan while your at it. There will be sludge in the pan.
You need to drop the exhaust to change the transmission filter. It is worth the effort.
Do not let it overheat. Install a proper water temp gauge. If it overheats, the motor will never recover. Google "Rover slipped liner". You have been warned.

Isuzu confirmed quiet strong kid in the corner nobody ever talks about.
>>
>>1048913
I had an '89 Trooper for about five or six years. it was a stripper model, manual tranny, no air, vinyl interior. That said- it just wouldn't quit when it was in low-lock 4x4. I moved with it one or two times, took a 19 hour road trip through the southwest in 100+ degrees at about 90 mph.

The only issue with it was the timing chain jumped and advanced the cam timing, which burned an exhaust valve. I should have thrown a 30,000 mile motor in it, but I sold it.
>>
>>1048871
Now those would be pretty capable engines.

The US market only ever got the 2.0 and 2.6L 4banger gas engines in the 1st gen and the 3.2L V6 gas engine in the second gen.
>>
>>1049004
Oh, also, only the "premium" version was available with a rear LSD. Everything else had open diffs in the US.

Holden had a 2nd gen in Ausland that came with factory lockers and a 3.5L I6 gas engine.
>>
Why are hilux's rare in the U.S? Import restrictions on jap cars?
>>
>>1049086
They haven't met US emissions standards in decades, as such they can't be commercially imported.

Instead we got the Tacoma, which is the same body/frame but has a US-approved gas engine instead of the euro-approved diesel, and a much nicer interior (which is still spartan by US standards).

>>1049208
>he thinks Toyota doesn't have a gas engine.
>>
>>1049213
>he can't read
>>
>>1049208
>>1049208

It's not that they don't meet emissions standards, both the Gen 1 Tacoma and Hilux used the 2/3RZ-FE and 5VZ-FE engines, the Tacoma was just designed and built in the US to avoid the "Chicken Tax" which places a 25% tax on all imported light trucks.

The real major difference between them is that the Tacoma was designed to be a bit more comfortable to use as a passenger car from the start since that's what most Americans use it for, whereas the Hilux is much more spartan.

Yay ford ranger. Great out vehicle. Got a bed for keeping your big shit in, and a little pseudo-trunk to keep your other stuff in. Also gets really great mileage compared to other trucks from the same time.
>>
>>1049311
The mileage is pretty much a thing for any
4cyl compact truck, my Tacoma gets 30-32 mpg highway according to the OBD2 port.

It's really a shame that compact Trucks were killed off by the CAFE regulations in the US, they're so much more practical for most people than a massive fullsize or midsize truck.

I've got 22mpg highway doing 75 miles / 120 km. I get like 23mpg if I go lower.

This is with higher than stock gearing and manual.
>>
>>1049608
Yeah in my case I've got a stock height manual 2wd Tacoma with street tires, I just put chains on it if I plan on going anywhere where I might see mud so it's pretty much the best case scenario for mileage.

That's what I used to do with my I-5 Colorado. Good times. Watch out for rocks when mudding, though. Make sure you chain them tighter than normal in case you snag on a tree root.

Duratrac tyres maximise fuel economy (apparently only by like 0.2MPG but still) and gear better for highway (the majority of my driving). Innacity driving would kill me on the higher-than-factory gears.

What year taco?

This completely depends on where you are. You should technically know this if you're teaching environmental awareness but it vastly differs if you're in the amazon, tundras, desert, etc.

The powercut I'm camping on right now is technically all marshland with swallowing trees so anywhere you can drive on is subject to swamp sprawl. So most of the things you quoted aren't as applicable, for example.

>>

The 2.3 Lima can do just under 30MPG on the highway if you have them at 3.2 something gearing.

21 highway MPG is what google says the gubmn't says the 4.0 is capable so putting larger tyres for higher gearing getting better gas mileage isn't hard to belieb.

Also, 3.0 a shit.
>>
>>1051612
Can confirm.
28 mpg highway, full throttle all the way.
79 mph max speed, with a tailwind.

Would an old-gen Nissan Frontier or Pathfinder (either the D21 or early D22) be good for what I'm looking for?

I need:
- highway capability for driving cross-country
- enough room to fit a Honda CT90 Trail Cub (a hair over 6ft long and about 3.5ft tall) in the back, plus a few duffel bags/rucksacks/containers of /out/ and /sci/ gear
- No truly serious off-roading, but able to handle snow and loads of fire roads
- manual transmission

If there's a mid-size truck/SUV that might be better for these combined tasks lemme know.

My goal is $3500 for budget but I can stretch up to $6k

I'm a field biologist and my work tends to be seasonal, so I pretty much have to haul ass across the country once every 3-4 months. Pay is sorta crap but I'm literally getting paid to be professionally /out/ and doing what I love, at least.

Right now I drive an '80s Subaru and while it's reliable as fuck it's got less off-roadability than I'd like and it's also miniscule. I need more cargo room!

The standard bed is supposed to be 2m long, which is something like 6'9".

The diesel engine (SD22) lasts forever, but is slow as balls and cannot keep up highway speeds.
Get the gas version for that.

Off roading isn't a problem.
>>
>>1056086
Yup, was planning on getting the gas version.

I would also prefer, if I got the truck over the Pathfinder, to have the extended cab just to have a waterproof compartment behind me to toss stuff like a gun, bug-out bag, or valuables.
