can one sleep comfy without a foamie in the woods?
i am perfectly comfortable sleeping on plain ground with only a blanket so i would say yes, however most people do not agree

have you considered hammocks?
As for just on the ground, I can't recommend it - it's been some of the worst sleep every time I've tried.
The cold ground would drain a lot of heat from you unless it's really hot I guess but even during the summer it can be cold during the night

¡STOP!

Hammock time!
Only if you take other steps to prevent you from heating up the ground. A layer of sticks, then a layer of dry leafs or grass works well.
There are still a few humans around sleeping in nests like that.

insulation under you is even MORE important in a hammock.

the question is why would you want to, a CCF pad costs all of five bucks and weighs next to nothing.
Even with all my fancy expensive gear (down inflating mat) I STILL take a cheap ccf pad offcut (half size of a full pad) as a general kneeling / sitting pad.
Honestly it's worth it's weight.

Not everyone can spare the bulk. Sure they don't weigh much but they can take up a ton of room.

i use a mat from the army i was issued. comfy enough
A thick pile of pine needles is more comfy than a normal bed at home. Takes a while to gather them, but it's so, so worth it.

you were issued an army? Cool!

Yes but in that situation you'd take an alternative like a inflatable pad, not just nothing.
