I was viciously attacked by this danger noodle today. Luckily, he let me live after I begged for my life.
What critters have you encountered while /out/ recently?

this afternoon
>>1031280
what kind of snek is that? kind of a neat pattern on him
>>1031329
One of the dozens of species/subspecies of garter snake. Not familiar with that particular one though.
And yeah they can be really pretty.
>>1031333
yeah i was gonna say some type garter snake, they're pretty chill. sometimes i find my dog playing (not eating or attacking) with them and they don't seem to mind
>>1031280
Raccoons mostly
>>1031280
snek has lied, he's still coming for you
I was riding my bike through the park and saw a groundhog. I yelled "EY! GROUNDHOG!" as I whizzed by and he ran away.
>>1031280
I was on my way back down a trail a few days ago and I found a caterpillar stuck in the middle of the trail
he didn't like it but I put him back onto a plant
Few days ago I saw a deer close to the house from my bedroom window. I see a lot of snakes, 3 blue racers so far, big ones. Killed one northern black widow so far, had a ton last year to deal with. I love to feed the chickadees by hand from the porch. I see lots of birds, blue jays, crows robins, eagles, hawks, cranes, lots of frogs and toads. I do a lot worm hunting so I come across a ton of cool bugs- found a few albino June bugs around here
>>1031329
>>1031333
http://srelherp.uga.edu/snakes/thasir.htm
It's an Eastern Garter. I'm not sure if it's a subspecies or a color phase. Most of the ones I've seen around here (central Alabama) have this coloring.
>>1031335
I actually rescued this one from the cat. he calmed down pretty quick and was just curious after that.
>>1031283
That camouflage tho. cutie
>>1031337
Tell them to tell their buddies to stay out of my deer feeders. Destructive little shits.
Found these guys, they survived their mother getting hit by a car. Unfortunately she died, but her six babies were just fine.

>>1031600
Big horny bird?
Too skittish to let me get any closer.
kinda hard to see but this bastard coyote and his pals were stalking me
>>1031337
My dog mortally wounded one last summer. I had to coup de grâce it with a shovel. I felt like shit about it.
>>1031847
I'm suprised your dog came out on top. I've seen coons wreck dogs twice their size.
Not recently but here's a picture of a sharp shinned hawk that ate a dove on my shed roof for a couple hours

Just found this noodle in my wood pile

>>1031950
Not verry deep, full of water at the bottom. Some newts or salamanders in there...but I didn't get a good look.
>>1031954
what state you live in? il tell you if you have any cool salamanders nearby
>>1031954
When I crawled in to get a closer look I was interrupted by the caves main resident.
I left him alone and went to explore somewhere else.
>>1031955

>>1031958
Yo where at in Bama? I need a new caving buddy. Im in Huntsville
>>1031994
South of B'ham. I haven't been caving since the 90's. That was just a hole in the ground. I'm to claustrophobic now
>>1032016
Ah darn
>>1031929
saved all of your pictures
are you a professional by any chance?
Not really /out/ but I was in the bike trails of a local park and saw two snakes. Small, skinny, black, and with some sort of orange or yellow ring around it's neck.
>>1031283
Should have ate it.
I accidentally stepped on a european viper (Vipera Berus), fortunately I stepped on its head and killed it instantly. Didn't get a chance to bite me, shit's venomous.
>>1031283
serious question: can anyone recognize this sound?
I'm wondering if it's a doe giving birth.

I'm flattered
, no I'm not a photographer /pro
I don't even have a nice camera just a nice cellphone camera and a cheap Amazon macro lense for the close ups
I've been trying to get better and desu the only reason I end up with good pics is because I take so damn many
Noodles get more dangerous.
>>1032626
Forgot pic.
Question. How do I resize pictures I take on my phone? They're all too big.
I met Billy
Was right in the middle of the road, at sundown. Put it on the side, but still open enough that it could be spotted. Made a bed of grass for it because it was shivering.
Went back a day later and it was gone. I told my wife that there were doe tracks around it. Really I think a coyote got it.
>>1031485
i've never tried feeding birds by hand how well does that usually work out?
>>1031575

Pic is the one on the arm
Woods I've been camping at got lots of deer and jackrabbits.
One morning I was getting dressed and lift my gaze and see one just 3meters away.
A young (1yo?) slender deer was looking back at me.
For a while we just shared a look, and when I spoke, it skiddled away.
I've been thinking about that deer for a while now. I didn't know I could be into deers. I want to make love to it and sleep with it in one cozy pile. Lick it's cunt, under it's raised inviting tail.
Fuck. If only I hadn't spoken. Basic fucking human mistake. I should've just calmly reversed my getting dressed act, and let the pheromones do the talking. I am going crazy. I seriously felt more love and lust than for any human in ages.
I live in a drafty warehouse with a steel roof, no heat or AC, and when it rains it leaks like a sieve. And all in the land where everything tries to kill you.
As such, /in/ is /out/
>>1033074
speaking of macros!
>>1033075

>>1031280
No pic but I found my first salamander of the year yesterday. My Filipino friend wanted to out him in a shot of moonshine for some odd reason.
>>1033065
God damnit
>>1032816
They love sunflower seeds, these guys are are easy to feed. Spend time in the area, only put seed out when you are out for association, they will get to know you. They will come to tell you when they are stopping by. Mine land by the window and chirp for me to come feed them. I've been able to teach visitors as young as three to sit still and feed them. They will test you to see if you jump as they get to know you.
>>1032817
b-but they eat pest and keep your basement clean.
and they are great mothers to !

>>1033368
It was actually really chill, crawled over our hands for a few mins then we put it under some sticks and leaves
>>1033395
That aint me anon but thanks for sharing
I was bitten by a Yellow Sac Spider last year. The bite area got much worse after this including necrosis. I pasted out on the ground drunk with my shirt off next to a river in the mountains.
I saw several bears while hiking in Sequoia on Saturday, as well as some Pikas and Marmots near Tokopah falls.

I went spearfishing last thursday and aside from all the regular stuff like harbor seals, opaleye, garibaldi, lobster, sargo, all the other assorted reef fish and the two calico bass I shot, I also say a ~80-120 lb black sea bass. Only the second time I've seen one of them.
Dogs been barking up a storm for the past few days, now I know it's a fuckin deer screwing with him since they can tell he's on a leash. I have half a mind to wait up in the tree it was under and drop on it with a knife.
I went outside today. I encountered a bird.
>>1033510
pacific US coast? where do you go? gun make/model? set-up? boat? swim from shore? give me the details m8
>>1033547
This was at La Jolla, I just do shores dives in different areas depending on the conditions when I get off work.I have a couple scupper pros and my dad's 16' Klamath center console for when me and my buddy get our acts togeher.
I usually dive with a rob allen 90cm with a mantis roller muzzle on it, I have a 75cm seac for holes and I'm finishing up building a couple new guns. One is a 3 band 58" I'm trying to hurry and finish now that the yellowtail are back and the other is a 48" single roller. I just dive in line with a RA hard foam filled float on a 50' float line when I shore dive and a 100' vinyl line and kelp carrot in kelp, but the 58" is being rigged for breakaway and the 48" I'm putting a 50m ulusub reel on it.
>>1033561
Sounds good, I always dive with a 2.5 foot paratang on an 8 foot leash to give me the range, then again here it's all submerged rocks with flounder in between, or mackerel and sea trout further out. Ever used a bunting?
>>1033599
>paratang and bunting
Must be regional cuz I don't know what they are.
>>1033395

>>1031880
He's a big hound with a prey drive. He's killed groundhogs and possums before as well. He usually grabs them at the head or neck, gives them one good shake and breaks the neck. This particular raccoon wasn't too big. Either a female or juvenile. Instead of the head he shook it from the back and paralyzed it, that's why I had to finish the job.
Raccoons can be dangerous if they get the dog to follow them into the water though. I've heard they can drown dogs.

Girlfriend saw a moose in the bwca last week. She called me over and I saw it's backside as it disappeared back into the forest. It was maybe 60m away on the island next to us.
>>1031283
adorable. of course we we outters know, durrs leave babies while out colleting food.
>>1032816
there is a patch of woods near quabbin where I live in massachusetts where people have been feeding birds by hands for decades. almost as if it is also 'culturally' ingrained in the birds. mostly it's chikadees. very fun.
>>1035815
Yeah they're pretty horrid. Same thing with rat snakes.
I keep fucking catching them trying to fish topwater frogs around lily and yonka pads. They're a bitch to get off a hook and that's about the only thing I've noticed that'll actually turn them aggressive. I keep a leather glove in my tackle bag now specifically for unhooking them and turtles.
>tfw a 3' northern water snake only weighs about a pound
>tfw they fight harder than a 4lb bass
Tarentola Mauritanica, found in Bordeaux last week, at like 3am. Pretty unusual around here, but some can come with exotic wood and live here well enough to reproduce. Pretty neat.

>>1031560
grill them while they're small and tender.
>>1035469
To give you the short-and-sweet I.D. skills needed for the NA outback, all you need to know is that 90% of any venomous snakes you'll encounter are rattlesnakes. So, if you see a rattle, leave it be, if not, approach with caution and respect.
My son found this little guy in a dirt pile the other day.
>>1031560
Raise them as the ultimate scent possums
>>1036345
Cool! Know what species of salamander that is? I've never seen a salamander in the wild ( W. Texas).
>>1036201
>>1036207
Mississippi is crawling with their little Asian cousins.
>>1035469
Most of the safe boys have round features while the poisonous ones seem more angular.
There is probably a lot of exception out there but that's usually enough.
>>1036400
Pretty sure its a "green salamander" (Aneides aeneus). Located in SW corner of VA if anybody else wants to take a stab at identifying.
i was walking through City Park in New Orleans tripping on acid the other night and almost stepped on a 3-4 foot alligator chillin by one of the lakes
being as i'm not from around these parts, i was startled.
>>1031573
where you from? Always wanted to find a tarantula in the wild.
>>1037085
Found that outside Tulsa OK.
>>1036535
That's close enough, at least for the US. Here we have pit vipers and the coral snek (and like 2 saltwater poisonous watersnakes that stay in the water 99.999% of the time), and all pit vipers have the blocky angular heads.
>>1036330
While rattlesnakes outnumber the other poisonous snakes in NA about 20:3 by species, by population numbers the copperhead is the most prevalent and the water moccasin/cottonmouth is second most prevalent by numbers per species.
Unless you live in the southwest you're more likely to encounter a non-rattlesnake poisonous snek than you are a rattlesnake by about 300%, and with >70% of the population east of the Mississippi that holds true as a national average as well.
On a side note, how the fuck did the coral snake get its name?
>doesn't live in or near coral
>doesn't have coral-shaped patterns
>isn't coral colored
>>1031592
what a cutie
she looks preggo as fuk (filled with eggs)
>>1032655
That's pretty abnormal. They usually hide in extremely tall grass or thickets where you wouldn't see it until you stepped on it.
>>1037128
I get that, I only covered rattlers since even a dumbass can ID one from other snakes, and fuck him he can search the rest of that up.
>>1035302
There are significantly more non-venomous snakes than venomous ones. So the easiest approach is get visually acquainted (online ofc) with the venomous species in whatever area you're in at the time (if you travel somewhere and intend to spend time in the wilderness, look up the snakes). Chances are there are only a couple in your area if at all.
Once you know those you can pretty quickly discern whether a snake you come across irl is one of those few venomous ones or not. And you most definitely should take the time to get acquainted with them. It's important for your safety and all the sneks out there that you don't sperg out and kill a 'harmless' beneficial snake.
But pic related is a fairly good rule of thumb, usually. You'll see this pattern as you research. There are, of course, exceptions. You shouldn't really be approaching/handling strange snakes anyway, unless you're very confident in your identification.
>>1035302
This pic also related.
This little snek hanging out in our backyard. It was all curled up, sunning, and when I approached it popped its head out. So I got a couple pictures, one good one, and left the big noodle to continue sunning.

How many sneks died for your pants?
I don't have a photo because I was busy having a heart attack, but I almost stepped on an Eastern Massasauga rattler yesterday.
Called the DNR and they took it. I'm like 5 minutes from the city, didn't even know we had them here.
I was riding my bike on a towpath the other day and there were like 5-6 vultures eating a dead groundhog in the middle of the trail. They didn't fuck off till I forbid real close to them and then they circled me for like a mile. I don't know if you guys have ever seen a vulture up close but they're about 3ft tall. I though that they were gonna come down and kill me
>>1039576
We want the vultures to eat the dead shit tho.
Toss the body's to the side so no one runs the birbs over.
>>1039264
Hey its a yellow sac spider. You know many people believe these are on par with brown recluse/black widows? Absolutely retarded. Harmless house spider. Theyre ugly little fucks though.
>>1037195
Probly. Those moths are weird. Wait forever to become a moth so you can fly around like an idiot for a week laying eggs everywhere. We actually have some cecropia eggs that we are trying to keep until their moth forms
>>1035302
>>1039615
It's better than some cicadas which spend years underground
At least moths are super qt and aren't screaming "lemme smash" 24/7.
Also did you know that Saturniid moths (like Luna moths and pic related) don't eat at all once they're moths? They don't even have functional mouth parts.

i had two remove this one and a painted turtle who flopped away from the trails the other day.
are the little ones capable of tearing off fingers, too? i just used two branches like chopsticks and when i put it down, it bit one but didn't break the stick.
>>1046354
Potentially. They have a very strong bite. I hooked about a 2 pound one (~8" diameter shell) while bass fishing and it bit cleanly through my forceps in the process of trying to unhook it.
>>1046354
Smart move with the sticks- a lot of people try to pick them up by the tail or drag them by it, both of which will likely injure any reasonably sized snapper. The easiest way (IMO) is to throw down a shirt or blanket, tease them onto it with a stick, and then pick it up. As a bonus, the snapper will probably hiss and freak out but won't try to bite.
The second best method is to pick it up by the back of the shell, in the space to the side of the tail. There's a lot of space there for the legs to retract into. It's an absolute pain in the ass if it's a larger turtle and you have to hold it at arm's length to keep it from trying to bite, but it'll keep you safe and won't injure the turtle.
You can also wait most snappers out if it's a safe location to chill for a minute. If they can't see you moving and there's no significant vibrations in the ground, most snappers will start moving in under a minute, and they'll clear out pretty quickly.
>>1046466
>wait out until it starts moving
sounds like fun, actually. gotta turn off the heavy vibrating I-6 engine to do that but it'd be nice to actually see one move. I will do that next time I see a snapper by myself since I've never seen them move around on land.
I'm always spooped picking them up with bare hands in case one has a freakishly long neck due to a mutation or something. Worse way to lose your finger, desu.
thank for haylp. Here's a rare pepe I spotted between two large rocks the other day.

Found 6 slugs today under my compost bin.
That totals up to 11 I've found this growing season in my garden. I kept two as pets.

You're definitely right to be worried about moving snappers with your bare hands- the only safe way to do so is the aforementioned back of the shell trick. They've all got freakishly long necks even without mutation- pic very much related.
Semi- relevant story- while common snappers are primarily scavengers and opportunity carnivores, the older they get the less they hunt and the more they scavenge. There's a pair in the family irrigation farm that live off of windfall apples for most of the summer and early fall. When my father noticed the trails up from the water, he started throwing apples into the pond. After a couple years of doing this he got to the point where one or both turtles will surface and swim around if you throw anything heavy enough to make a splash into the water- but only when apples are in season. They'll even do so if the thrower close to the water, which is pretty cool to see because under most circumstances they're shy as hell.
Found this ambitious little guy. I couldn't decide whether to help the snake or the frog so i just let nature be.

Now that sucks. He's in for some serious discomfort
across the street, lot of deer here and they walk right by you.
>>1032655
You shouldn't touch them if they're just chilling. Then they smell and get eaten
These lil guys grew up in my backyard until they were old enough to fly, except one who fell from the nest and was chased by mein hund. There was another batch after them till we took the nest down.
Found this boy and carried him for a mile during cross country. Coach toom him home to his turtle habitat

I moved this one across the trail today with a shoebox and a toolbox. It was actually quite difficult when you don't have much surface area to work with. ):
Any advice on how to pick it up with the rear?

>>1049684
1. they're not very useful
2. Not an pack animal. We domesticated most animals by pretending to be a head of the pack. Dogs and horses have very strong instinct to follow.
>>1049684
They let her pet them which is crazy. But she is also crazy.
Saw an absolutely massive golden eagle while out on a bike ride yesterday. Wish I had my real camera and not just the cellphone, this this was giant.

>>1042622
What board?
why is it that we can accidentally run into animals and not spook them until we're really close, sometimes only a few feet away and you're not even trying to be stealthy with your approach, but when you purposely hunt for some animal ( for a photo or something ), as stealthy as you could, taking all proven precautions not to spook the animal, they get spooked from a mile away and fly/run off?
It's annoying as fuck. Especially when I'm looking for critters to photograph; I can accidentally run into a maya as I'm loudly trotting about, but God-forbid if I sneak about and spook every damn bird within a 5 mile radius.
>>1047520
for future reference you shouldn't move them far from where you found them, they will try to travel back to where they were picked up

Reminds me of the time I was up at my uncles camp doing some fishing. Got a nice basket of crappie and gills. After we filleted them we put the guts in a bag and left them near the boat so we could dumped them for the turtles in the morning. When we woke up my buddy went down to get stuff loaded and yelled up "ah fuck! God damn coons got into the fish!" My uncle responded "what? The niggers got into the fish?"
