Have 5-10 acre hardwood plots scattered around two counties. 2-3 acres wild-simulated, based around original growth, each plot. Cycled harvests at the 8-9 year mark.

No real stories. Thieves are either really stupid or really good. Loss to thieves is built into the model, as is security during the season.

Neighbors are mostly cool. One idiot didn't understand why funny Chinese men showed up once a year to my house, spent a year trying to prove I was growing Opium.

Her husband had to have her committed, then divorced her. The opium delusion was one of many.

Most effective security measure is spike strips on main and secondary roads. Local tow company loves me.

Second (in-season) is relatives with rifles and dogs.

Third, post-theft, is soil analysis. Lots of inert stuff you can put in as unique location identifiers. The dawning horror on multiple-offenders' faces as it's explained to them that substance "a" is not naturally present where they claimed to pick their roots is one of life's small joys.

I live in one of the best climates for ginseng, it's all over the countryside. Never given much thought to growing it myself though because I have no idea what it's good for. Can you do anything useful with it besides selling it to Oriental gentleman?
