I mow my yard every Saturday (because of autism). I use a mulching blade so it's great for my grass. We've been getting a good amount of rain lately and my neighbours keep their lawns down to an inch it seems, and they're always mowing.

I enjoy it though since getting a lawn tractor instead of pushing it in the NC humidity. Takes way less time too.

You want to keep your grass at 3", only cutting when you can cut 1/4 of the height (so cut at 4"). Make sure blades are sharp, and water early in the day, enough to fill a tuna can set in the lawn.

And dope move, leaving clippings can be a great fertilizer. Just be sure the thatch layer doesn't get too thick.

My mower has a vacuum attachment and dump container. I can vacuum the grass up as I mow then dump it in my compost pile. Also, mowing the lawn is mandatory where I live. If you don't mow 25 feet out from the house, the local government will give you 30 days to fix it. If you don't fix it, they will take your house. That's county-wide and in a very rural area.
