guy, The North face makes expensive stuff, not necsarily the best, or more durable.
I'd recomend Black Diamong Jackets, Arc´teryx, Helly Hansen, Salewa, etc.
Trust me on this.
Also get Gore-tex Pro, it'll be the lightest most efficient against rain.
Beeen up to 6400 meters last year to test out some gear and found my arc'teryx to be the best jacket I've ever had.

I have a silnilon jacket from Lightheart Gear. It doesn't breath at all, but it won't wet out and get shitty like breathable ones always do. It packs down to nothing, and weighs nothing.

I got this columbia watertight jacket at Ganders going out if business sale for like $38. I like it a lot. So far it's definitely waterproof, and breathes alright. I've never found a rain jacket that's really waterproof that breathes at all, but I'm a hot natured person, so I've just accepted my fate. This jacket though is better than any other I've had so far.

i too was making a very similar decision. i wanted it to be goretex (water and windproof), and $200 or less. i was trying to decide between some marmot jackets and the north face apex flex gtx.

i was pressed for time one week as i had a short notice, and a long day hike planned where i could potentially be above treeline in some wet conditions. i had to make a decision

with some money in my pocket i went to my local chain outdoors store. they didn't have a northface apex flex gtx. they did have the marmot minimalist. i've had it for about a month now and i love it. it's done its job thus far. hope this helps

This nigga gets it. Gore pro is the goat for everything, but has a hefty price tag. If you cant deal with the rustling of a proper hardshell tho gore c knit is just as breathable in a softer feel (less waterproof and durable, but not massively)

Silnylon ponchos are great for multidays where you need to shave weight and bad weather isnt too big a concern, but bad terrain will rip it and consistent rain will force you to stop cos its just so sweaty
