>>1015068
We have so many wild plecos. I saw a really big one cruise by a couple weeks ago when I was night fishing. The wide part of his head must have been like 10".

>>1015075
What size? I think you shoulda done the 15 and 30. You will soon see that 40 is overkill unless you are only using it for casting into thick lillies. 20lb is more than enough for pulling big bass out of most cover
>>
>>1015076
20 lb on a 2000 size
40 lb on 4000 size
i know its overkill but the dicks i went to litterally didnt have any 30, and only had one pack of 15 and it was yellow , and the pack was opened and a bunch of the line had been pulled out
oly other sizesthere were 10, 50, and 80

i going to be using the 40 for saltwater fishing aswell so i think its KINDA okay
plus im using lighter leaders, so its not like im going to get snagged up and not be able to get off,

also yes its a sprayed grass brush hog, got it per your recomendtions

So today I decided to throw a Zoom Fluke for the first time. I threw it for maybe an hour in various sizes and colors. It's my belief that they are a certified meme. There is not one good feature about it. The only reason I caught a fish I think was because he swallowed it right after it hit the water. I still like the small ones for trailers but the full size and big ones are getting taken out of the tackle rotation
>>
>>1015084
Zoom fluke is not a meme for saltwater though, at least in my experience.

It's the only thing that occasionally outfish my $20 lucky craft flashminnow for halibut if the condition is right.
>>
If I'm reading the sticky correctly I can just get a left handed meme caster if I don't want to reel with my right hand?
>>
I recently switched from 20lb Power Pro to 10 lb Fins Windtamer braid. It seems to work pretty good and I think it has cut down on the line drifting in the wind somewhat. I have already lost 1 lure on a snag, but I expected that with 10 lb test.
>>
>>1015093
Correct.

Those of us who grew up on spinning reels instead of the shit-tastic spincasters (Zebcos) do best with "left handed" baitcasters.
>>
>>1015093
Yes, that's how my memecaster is
>>
>>1015084
Standard/split tail flukes are okay when bass are being particularly spooky or sedate, but are kind of a bitch to rig to where they don't just roll. I have taken to fishing the new(ish) Yum paddletail flukes/swimbaits with much better success.

I think they actually work better than the Zoom paddletails (swimmin' super fluke).
>>
>>1015084
Not a meme
Get offset hooks and rig them weedless.
In the dead of summer fish them without a weight, go slow and twitch lightly.
When you twitch them, they will act like a subsurface Zara Spook.
Caught a bunch of bass on them when it was really hot.
>>
>>1015105
Split tail fluke has completely function compared to the paddle tail though. You aren't supposed to straight retrieve super fluker ever. I've riggedit w/e and it still has beautiful action on hard jerk and sink down nicely. They either meant to be fished really slow as jerkbait or just reel in fast to skip over surface.
>>
>>1015113
> completely function

I meant completely different function.
>>
>>1015099
Too bad for you guys.
As a lefty, I take sadistic pleasure in the fact that 99% of all Zebcos and memecasters ever made work 10x better for me than right handed folks.
It's like the ONE area of life where divine justice has prevailed.
>>
>>1015114
I know. You can fish a paddletail like a jerkbait, and to a lesser extent like a skipbait, but it also functions as a swimbait, spinnerbait body, fished on a Lindy rig, on a shakey head, or on a regular jighead. They're far more versatile.

However, they're cheap and light enough there's no reason to not have both in your bag. I just find the traditional flukes are far more situational.
>>1015117
True, but I console myself in the fact you had to use a Zebco. And any memecaster worth owning is available in both lefty and righty.
>>
>>1015111
I tried that first. Looked like a lifeless hunk of plastic just sitting in the water slowly sinking down with no action. When I put it on a weighted hook in that pic I posted it didn't do anything much different.

>>1015113
Although I understand what you mean I believe there are other baits that can do both of those things far better than a split tail fluke 2bh

>>
>>1015119
A hard jerkbait might have the same or even slightly better action( if you use a high quality one) than a zoom super fluke. They aren't weedless though and has very specific depth of dive for each.

Super fluke just does such as nice kick of its body it is jerked and move in all different direction. You can't achieve the same with any stuff with a paddle or curly tail since they just swim straight instead of turning the body when jerked like a super fluke. A stick bait might also have the same effect, but they looks like worm, not bait fish. I believe that its the jerk that catches the attention and trick the fish. The fish strikes it when it's sinking after alteady being tricked so the sinking action isn't that important

I always have opposite happen with lighter braid. The wind seems to just pick it up more.
>>
>>1015225
I bought a ll bean bag like that. the problem I found with that type of bag is when I cast,
the bag would whip around and always slap me into me. the extra waist band didnt cling and would slip, tried using a bungie to cinch it tighter but was uncomfortable. It might depend on the type of fishing youre doing also. I use a backpack usually because its stable on my back and just toss some planos and ziplocks in it.

Cute dink butt anon. There is sadly no lingcod here in socal but there is white sea bass. I managed to get a 20 inches juvenile one in the surf on a super fluke as well
>>
>>1015263
I have a lifetime total of two halibut, both at the same exact spot in San Francisco. The other one was just a teeny bit bigger than the one in this pic. That one was on a "city shrimp" 4 inch big hammer. I would probably have got more by now if I spent more time at it.

Now that I think about it, I have also only caught two lingcod. One was on a white ice zoom fluke. The other one was on a city shrimp big hammer. Weird coincidence.
>>
>>1015273
I see, what do you fish for most of the time up there then or you don't go that much?

You guys at least have stripers as well. Saltwater striper is very rare in socal here.

I've been pulling 3-4 dink halibuts every trip in the surf. I also got some bigger ones at 15-20 inches but just short of legal size a week ago. Idk where those big ones go now.

I get pretty decent at predicting where the halibut will be in the surf. There's always good fishing for them at the beach I fish if I find the structure and it's the right time of the year.

I almost bought a little 3500 bag at Dick's over the weekend. I keep looking at em so I don't need to keep the big 3700 bag around but I know if I buy a second bag I'm going to drop at least $200 in lures too. I really liked that lottle Gander Mtn one too but now I missed out.

Lately I just leave my bag in the car and walk around with a few rods.

What are your experiences making lures out of cork?
So far I've made lures out of balsa, but I ran out.
In comparison cork seems very brittle and heavy. Also I guess the material doesnt handle cutting well. Maybe sanding it down is a better option?
>>
>>1015064
>fishing a Texas rig with a spinning rod

REEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>1015352
Decided to ruin a couple of my corks to get a feel of the material.

Ordinary knives are out of the question, but my scalpel set works perfectly, like I'm cutting butter.
Sanding the cork down seems to just rip it to shreds.

I think going for a smooth boomerang shape to find out how thin I can make these.
>>
>>1015353
Why? I mean memecasters a best but as long as the spinning rod has some fast action, it's fine.

quick, look for eggs, hatch the tadpoles in a bucket, then use them as bait. they eat shredded lettuce frozen in to ice cubes
>>
>>1015363
I do mine where I tie the T-rig on a flouro leader, then a surgeon's loop like 10"-12" up the line and then I'll attach that to the snap. Creates a weak point but with 20lb flouro and 20lb braid, it will handle the bass. Not the best way to do it but I can switch from a Texas rig to a crank bait in 10sec.

That makes no sense how he did it tho because he would still have to cut the line to take the weight off.

I did it for 3mos, plus had the $10 off code so the boxes pretty much came out to $11/mo. So I figure it's the price of buying one Yo-Zuri or X-Rap.

2 of the 3 months, I ended up upgrading to the "Pro" box tho. Basically just gives you an extra ~$10 bait so I don't think it's really worth the extra money above the regular boxes.

Cant really say if it has been a long or a short while. It just happens.
>some people I know cast theirs out of plastic in bunches of hundreds, but I dont think they're "selfmade" at that point anymore.

And once its done, I'm hoping to catch some grayling with it, I dont think the cork material can handle stronger fish like trout or big pike.
I'm making another just like it, with a different kind of swimplate, to bring more casting options.

I'd start by going to your local hardware store
Buy the following, if you dont have them already.
>woodcarving knife
>couple of thin hacksaw blades
>Piano wire
>blowtorch
>sandpaper, few varying types, from coarse to smooth
>few of those pen sized airbrushes to paint them
Or if you're cheap as fuck like me, steal some of your girlfriends or mothers nailpolishes.
Order your first swimming plates from a website, as they're hard to come by otherwise, or they're way more expensive.
Anon at
>>1015580
Linked a good website.

And get a piece of balsa wood.

I used to draw what I wanted to do on paper, with exact dimensions etc, but as I kept doing lures, I just started to go by instinct.

In the beginning, for every lure I made that worked, I used to make 4 that didnt. So dont get disappointed if your first lure doesnt work.

Good luck
>>
>>1015586
I'm just worried they'll try and fit all of Texas into one region, which would kinda defeat the whole "local" part. I sent them an email and asked them how they split it up though, so we'll see what they say.
>>
>>1015603

>>
>>1015580
>>1015594
Allright. Thanks to both.
Never heard of grayling. Good sportfish/eating?

But why the blowtorch?
>>
>>1015606
Grayling is a decent fighter fish, but I dont sportsfish, I catch and cook.

When I have enough fish, and have time to spare, I give my selfmade lures to other fishermen nearby, and share fishing stories.
>A couple of times some fishermen found me and asked to have a couple more
>makes me feel infinitely happy.

Blowtorch is to quench the steel wire in case its too soft for the intended lure.
Sometimes it causes the wire to rust if its not taken care of, but no lure lasts forever.

>all the bass were in 6-10" of water, slowly patrolling the shoreline but not hitting ANYTHING for anybody

Been fishing 28 years and that's only the second catfish I've caught on an actual lure. The other was a small (~3lb) flathead that hit a 2" orange curlytail grub in ~10" of water when I was a teenager.
>>
>>1015635
Also hooked into something that pulled the hook on my 3/16oz jighead straight and it got off. There are a few small carp, at least one giant orange koi (~4ft long), and some decent sized snapping turtles in here but nothing capable of making a run like this did unless I foul-hooked a carp.

The catfish are non-sustainable and stocked so they stay small, the biggest bass ever caught in there was ~3.5lbs, and carp are vegetarian so it would've had to be a foul hook.

The first and only time I went saltwater fishing in Mexico.
>Be me 20 years old
>Go to Riviera Maya with the fratbros on Sprang Brake
>Find a shady Mexican guy on the marinas offering fishing services the morning after me and a bro had ran train on some sloot
>Barter with him in Spanish becuz am dirty Argentine lad
>Go out about 40 minutes from the shore while slamming piss tasting Coronas
Eventually we found the spot and did some sort of trolling with like a Giant plastic jig with a skirt and a hooked Bollyhoo. After about half an hour the captain yells that he sees a fish chasing it.
I see this shimmer explode out of the surface. It's a fucking beautiful sailfish, glimmering to my hungover as fuck eyes.
I grab the rod as the Paisano instructs of the drag settings so I don't fuck up and lose the fish.

I battled the fish for an hour and a half. I brought it to the boat at least 3 times; each time it exploded away when it saw the side of the boat lol. Eventually it was spent and I got the fucker to the side. It was a 7'4" Sailfish... the catch of a lifetime. I got the hook out of it's mouth and let the bastard swim another day.

Honestly bros, I can't describe it properly. I had never known that a fish could be that powerful and take that long to catch. The best part about it was that the next day I had a Blister that went from my elbow to the tip of my thumb from when the rod/reel were rubbing on me for so long.

Sorry if that was long but that's what I got.

The one good size channel cat I caught while running a tiny Beetle Spin for panfish on a UL with 4lb mono. I had to lift the fish out of water by hand or it would've broken the line.

The big bowfin I caught when I was a little kid at this tiny pond we fished daily. Caught it on 1/2 a bluegill and had no idea what it was.

The time I caught my friend's rod at that same pond. Carp pulled his rod into the water, I caught his rod 20min later, he grabbed the rod and reeled in the carp that pulled his rod in.

The time some Mexican gave me $5 for a carp at that pond.

My first big snek, 27"

26" LMB

First peacock that wasn't a baby

Biggest peacock I got a pic of (actual biggest jumped out of my hand). I didn't expect peacocks in this little lake, saw the flash of gold and it dug into this huge glob of that stringy algae shit so it was like a 2lb fish with 10lb of weeds and I didn't know it was a peacock until I cleared off the weeds.

And that monster that I didn't catch, had to be a snakehead, one of those 40"+ monsters. Or one of those sharks that venture into freshwater, but probably a snek.

What's the best fishing knife, /out/?

I've got a Buck 119 Special meme hunting knife that I actually successfully gutted and quartered a moose with (with a couple quick sharpens during the act), and an Al-Mar SERE 2000 folder, but no fillet knife. Do I even need one, for cooking what I catch right on the shore?

If I'm going fishing in lakes / streams for small trout, bluegill, etc, am I fine with what I've got? If not, what's the best knife for cleaning / prepping. I'm willing to spend some money for something that will last my lifetime.

I need a new general purpose rod + reel to replace the cheesy Wal-Mart Shakespeare I've had since I was 10.

Something for fishing mostly off the shore of ponds, lakes, and rivers in the Western US. Occasionally out of a canoe or something. Primarily various trout and of course the mishmash of introduced species. Not going for trophies, just small fish I can eat while camping. I'm guessing here, but nothing larger than a few pounds probably. It's been years since I really did any fishing (and even then as a kid with my dad), so I'm kind of learning from scratch here.

It'll be broken down and carried on a motorcycle. Open reel, pls.

Willing to spend some dosh to get something I can keep for life.

Cabelas still has this combo on sale, I bought it last week and am very happy with it. The reel has a high gear ratio and the rod is very sensitive so you feel everything your lure hits.

I got the 1 piece 7'M combo, but they have a 2 piece ML 6'6" that should be plenty for panfish, trout, and the occasional bass. It's on backorder though.

Dick's has some really fucking good options.
>F&S Inferno rods
Available in everything from 5'0" UL to 8'0" heavy in both spinning and baitcasting, runs $25-30 depending on length. They're surprisingly good rods.
>Okuma Stratus V reels
Spinning reels are ~$40 normally and go on sale (like right now) for half off. High bearing count for their size, have always treated me right. Baitcasters are $50 and come in both left and right hand, they're pretty fuggin' good too, if a bit slow.

Personally I'd go with those Okuma reels for any price bracket under about $100, they are damn good reels.

For trout specifically, take a look at the F&W Tec-Lite rods. High guide count, trout-specific flex rates (medium to medium fast), available as 1 or 2-piece rods for ~$50 or 4-5 piece travel rods in a hardcase for ~$60, all around great feel.

Memorable catch? My brother was getting married so we all went fishing down at the damn. All afternoon and we didn't catch much of anything. We're getting ready to pack up when I go to real in a piece of cut blue gill and find I hit a snag... only it wasn't a snag.

32" flathead catfish. It's mouth was full of hooks and broken leaders.

Best trip ever was when I took my dad salt water fishing for Father's Day. He taught me how to fish but we always did freshwater. It was finally my turn to teach him a little something.

We spent the night catching so many speckled trout and sand trout that my arms were sore and my hands were cut up from repeatedly handling line and fish. At about 3 am, he landed a 44" black drum. That fight tired him out so we went and slept in the truck for a couple hours and woke up before sunrise, where we limited out on red drum in about 2 hours.

Then we drove home talking about old fishing trips.

In the OP, there is a list in the Pastebin. I reccommend looking at Pflueger Presidents. They have some XT or whatever for a couple dollars more that is nice too(regular is $60, XT is $80 I think). For what you're doing, I would say check out the "30" size. It's a great size for trout and bass and panfish too, a bit smaller than most other "Medium" size reels but larger than any light panfish stuff. And then 6lb or 8lb monofilament, or if you want to be an OG, get some PowerPro (braid) in 10lb or 15lb. With the braid, you get more strength for a given diameter compared to mono. If you run 10lb braid instead of 6lb mono, you will be able to land that random channel cat that bites the lure or a bass that digs into weeds
>>
>>1015828
For a multipurpose rod, I'd go with a 6' medium-light or 6'6" medium. Enough backbone to do bass, as long as you're not throwing frogs into thick cover or some shit. Sensitive enough you can feel that 3" bluegill dink pecking at your 1.5" curltail grub. Long enough for good casting distance, short enough to fit under trees and shit. Should be a buttload of options in both 1 and 2 piece rods.

1 piece rods are slightly stronger and marginally more sensitive. 2 piece rods fit in car trunks.

Almost all spinning rods are slow enough for trout, so you're not ripping the hooks out or lures away from them on the hookset, but if you get your choice I'd go for a medium or medium fast flex. Panfish it really doesn't matter, and you're not going to be using the bass techniques that require a fast or x-fast action with a spinning rod.

Go for a small-ish reel. 1500-2500 "size" (varies by manufacturer, not the dinky ultralight trout reel, not the monstrous bass reel that holds 200yds of 10lb mono). Reel size is important to rod balance.

I prefer EVA (foam) grips to cork, they last longer and don't get slimed up as bad if you're handling a lot of fish. They're also somewhat easier to clean. However it is personal preference (cork is marginally more sensitive and more resistant to UV damage if you're out constantly or have big-assed windows wherever you store your kit) and should be the last factor you consider on whether you buy a rod or not.

Kansas and co. have public access borrow pits basically everywhere the state DNR stocked. Usually excellent fishing opportunities with low pressure.

Those Okuma Stratus V reels, anon mentioned them earlier, they are on sale for $29.99 right now I believe and I bought one maybe a year and a half ago and really like it. The "35" size would be a good medium size for bass and maybe some catfish and 10lb mono or like 20lb braid. But they also have the "25" size which I own and love it. It's smaller and lighter and you could run 6lb mono or I run 10lb braid and with that braid on a 6'6" M Berkley Lightning Rod, I can fish for anything from small bluegill up to larger bass.

I still probably reccommend the Pflueger President over that, you can rely on that for years. But the Okumas are half the price so...
>>
>>1015840
Just down the middle, and then the other half had the flab you normally open up to drink closed, as well as being its sides cut so that the sides could overlap.
The finnish guy filled the bottom part with old mans beard, abundant at practically every treebranch, and cut a couple of holes into the bottom so air got trough it. Old mans beard acted as padding to stick the flies on to.

You had to pull the halves apart to get at the flies, but it worked fine for couple of days.
>>
>>1015850
Nebraska/Kansas are easily worse than any other state. Completely flat, barely any lakes. Like you said it's only stocked places that are decent and even then that's gay as shit compaired to natural fisheries that basicly everywhere else has
>>
>>1015857
Sounds like an "old indian trick" level fuckery. Smart and unpredictable. I like it
>>
>>1015856
I'm the guy that recommended the Okumas. I have a Pflueger President, thing has given me nothing but headaches and has been back for warranty service like 3x now.

The Okuma is the better reel, by a rather large margin. It's smoother, lighter, has a better drag, better feeling handle, and the reel foot and stem flex less. I now own every size Stratus V they make (10, 25, 35, 45, 55 in spinning and the one lefty baitcaster).

Also, the spinning reels are on sale currently for $24.98 in store. Not sure why they're $5 higher online.
>>1015864
They were stocked when they were dug, they're self sustaining fisheries. The bigger ones will even have northerns and tiger muskies in them, and the north half of Nebraska the bigger ones will have actual muskies and perch.
>>
>>1015867
And knowing that even then they are worse then every other state is saying something about those other states.

Ah, yeah in IL most places like that are off-limits or still in production. Hence my affinity for trespassing. But they're slowly starting to open the old ones to public. In 20 years I bet all of them around my area will be public access, but until then they're all mine haha!
>>1015864
Yeah, this is sort of what I was getting at. If you live in one of those states there's a good chance that you might live miles from the nearest body of water. I can walk out the door and be fishing in 2 minutes. If anything makes Illinois suck its the people or taxes.
>>
>>1015872
Having lived in IL, MO, KS, NE, and IA I can say without a bit of doubt that MO has the least access to good fishing of all of them. You've basically got the Missouri and Mississippi rivers and state parks, which is 100% boat required for anything other than catfish, and if you live in Independence/STL/KS a few county parks that are so severely overfished you're lucky to get even a dink in 6 hours' of fishing.

I guess I am having a hard time rationalizing something I will enjoy over the course of many years, versus the instant regret of spending all that money INSTANTLY.

do you think it would just be best, since I need the rails, the mounts, and the crossbars, to just contact the dealership and see if they have the parts, and then attempt to jew down their egregious dealership prices?

>>
>>1015907
Channel catfish and common carp? Medium probably. But you could easly go MH because you don't really need the sensitivity for lures and will probably be running a bit of weight on it. I always like a MH with 12-17lb mono or like 30lb braid for that.

>>1015867
I'm still amazed how smooth those Okumas are for the price. I just want to see how it holds up over time but I have been tempted so many times to buy a couple more when they are on sale just to have as backups.
>>
>>1015907

Depends entirely on the size of the fish. Unless you're specifically targeting trophy blues and flatheads, you'll mostly be catching channel catfish between 1 and 10lbs.

Any 6+ bass rod will handle them. #15+ braid or mono. Size 2000 or larger reel.

Terminal tackle is more important. Catfish like submerged cover and whwn hookes, can surge and twist fiercely. A strong knot in a circle/khael/bait hook and some abrasion resistant leader tied to a barrel swivel will do wonders in helping you land many more fish. And a landing net.

you can find portable racks for $50 or less.

I would also suggest looking at thrift stores for a basic entry level pfd.

2-piece rod, medium / medium-light / medium-fast. 6'-6'6". Probably a cork grip. This is going to be sticking out of a backpack or strapped to the side rack of my motorcycle, so the ease of transport of a 2-piece and UV resistance of cork sound like what I need. Smallish reel, 1500-2500 / 25-25 size. 10-15lb braid.

Thanks for all the info guys, I'm taking notes. I'll probably cruise over to Sportsmans Warehouse at some point this week to browse their inventory based on what I read here. If I don't find anything I'll make the half hour drive to Bass Pro / Cabellas.

I tore down, cleaned, and lubricated my old Shakespeare trout rod to pass on to my wife. At least until she decides she wants to upgrade.

Probably this one. I was in Austin about to head home to Fort Worth, but I stopped at this creek for about an hour to fish. I had caught some little fish in it before, but nothing over 2lbs. Well on my third or fourth cast I feel a little bump, I set the hook, and this guy took off. She was jumping, and I had to rip her away from cover two or three times. I doubt she'd been caught many times if ever cause she fought like hell. I don't know why it's the most memorable. Maybe it's just the setting I was in, or how so fought, but it's definitely in the top three.

The other one was when I was on the phone with my friend and I had a little 4" finesse worm just sitting on the bottom. I wasn't shaking it or anything. I feel a bite and set the hook and it took off and I was like "hey man I'm gonna have to call you back this is a big one." And basically threw my phone down lol. That was a 4ish lb fish.

And last would be when I was fucking with the turtle with my mouse topwater and a bass came up and scared the shit out of the turtle.

Awesome lure to use at dusk in the summer.
My most memorable bass ever I caught on a jitterbug.
I was running it one evening on the edge of some weed-filled shallows when all of a sudden:
>line zooming towards my lure
>my lure completely vaporizes.
Not kidding, it was like a movie.
I was praying like hell that my knot would hold and the fish wouldn't throw it, especially as one of my HS buddies just happened to be there watching me in awe (I had a well earned reputation for being shit at fishing before this moment).
I landed it and weighed it out- 5.5 pounds

its debatable. my definition is by style of construction. when you make a hard lure and then add a hook to it, its not a fly. if you start with only a hook, and dress it, to be fished as is and not added to anything, its a fly.
so, if you sit there and carve a wooden spook, then come back and add a hook to it, its not a fly. when you take a hook, and dress it with feathers and hair, then add that to a spinner body, its not a fly. if you clamp the hook in a vice, dress it with feathers and hair, then glue on a popper body, so the hook is the primary part, it is a fly. the exception to this rule is a tube fly, its tied and crafted as a fly, but on a small tube instead of a hook. its the same method of construction otherwise.

Fly fishing can be engrossing. It rewards people who pay attention to details. But because of that it also attracts the people who get hyper-focused on every little aspect of everything, trying to make it perfect and place everything into neat little ideological boxes.

The way I see it is I have another year/and half before I am genuinely supporting myself so I might as well make the most of this financial cushion I am sitting on right now.

hopefully by this weekend I will have a Kayak and a new found freedom and love for fishing

Not stupid.
It gets you out on the water. Better stuff will be more durable/ throw farther/be more sensitive etc, but what you've got will work for now. The most important thing is to BE FISHING. You can't catch anything if your line's not in the water.
>>
>>1016506
Is it better to use hooks and fake bait, or real bait?
I was thinking of getting this.
And should I Just get some line, hooks, worms and a leatherman?

>sometimes crazy ugly shit works
Like wooly buggers. Those ugly things still confuse me but I've caught basically every US game fish on one. Think I'm just missing blue cat and grass pickerel.
>>
>>1016509
Catfishing is best with "real" bait (nightcrawlers, bluegill, dip bait). Everything else is close to equal, but live bait is gonna be the lowest effort.
>>
>>1016481

That sounds about right. My brother in law fits that description to a T. He considers all other kinds of fishing other than fly fishing for trout to be simplistic and suitable only for those who can't manage to fly fish.

I also think the niche market allows people in the industry to charge more, which makes it less attractive to value minded anglers, which plays even more into the elitist aspects.

But my coworker also fly fishes and he's a cool guy.

I'm just waiting for the day I see someone practicing traditional Japanese style fishing. I might take it up just to see how some flyfags react.
>>
what exactly is the point of putting skirts on baits?
>>
>>1016505
Too bad you live in Ohio
>>
>>1016529
Just like clothes on women. It's more tantalizing if you haven't seen what's under that skanky little skirt.

Fish just can't resist grabbing on and seeing if the chatter meme is a roastie with big lips.
>>
>>1016516

Lowest effort is buying Gulp catfish chunks. I put doughballs and punch bait above that as you have to deal with treble hooks and keeping the shit on the hook.

Catfish wise, catching live bait and cutting it up while chumming the area is the most time/effort intensive way. You can spend more time preparing to fish than you do fishing, but you will catch any fish that's biting.
>>
>>1016516
Thanks. Any other advice you can give me?
>>1016534
I saw these recipes. Are they okay?
http://www.gameandfishmag.com/fishing-tips-and-tactics/how-to-make-your-own-catfish-dough-bait/
>>
>>1016529

They give a lure a little more action. Without the skirt a jig is just a weight, a spinner bait is just some blades.
>>
>>1016535

Making your own bait is fun and all. But Danny Kings is like 5 bucks a can at Walmart and will last several trips.

IMO, it's more effective (and fun) to take some size 8 cricket hooks, a piece of bread/worm/grasshopper/snail/whatever and catch the hell out of panfish between 1 to 5 inches long. Even some chub or shiners if you're lucky.

They're the best bait not just for catfish, but any large predatory fish like bass. Cut them up or fish them whole.

The only issue is that you have to catch fish in order to start catching fish... but if your body of water doesn't have biting panfish, you have bigger problems.

>catch fish to catch fish
Yo dawg...

In other news, cast nets and minnow traps exist. And crawfish or minnow traps can be made from 2 2L soda bottles using only a stapler.
>>
>>1016551

Most fishermen (especially new ones) don't actually know how to use cast nets and minnow traps catch bait that's way to small... for me anyway. And it's more gear for a novice to buy, learn to use, and lug around.

But yeah, learning to use a cast net and investing in a good shrimp/crab/Crawfish trap was the best thing I ever did as far as long term fishing is concerned.

Thanks for the tips, I'll think about it. My idea was to get 5# to start and to have for lakes and streams and then next year to get #9-10 spey I can use for sea trout and mainly salmon. But I'll look into getting a #6 if thats recommended.

On flyfishing and flyfags many people are true that they are elitist cirkle jerkers but I don't really give a fuck. I just like light gear when I go fishing and I have a melancholic memories about fishing tenkara style on the streams when I was a kid, I remember how much fun was it. A couple of very basic tips:
>don't buy cheap no-name Chinese hooks off amazon/ebay/aliexpress/etc, they usually have shit tempers and are dull as fuck
>avoid the classic cheapo hollow plastic bobbers, they're brittle and will eventually fill up with water. Stick with the solid foam ones until you're comfy enough fishing to try slip bobbers, then get the balsa ones.
>always carry something that can cut hook wire, in case you hook yourself (this can be as simple as a $0.50 set of small sidecutters from Harbor Freight/Northern Tool, or a multitool)
>always tell someone where you're going, even if it's a very safe county park or some shit
>check the links in the OP for fishing knots, and practice them before you go
>a big hook will catch a big fish (and occasionally an exceptionally stupid and/or dedicated bluegill). A small hook will catch anything that can't pull it straight (which should be everything, set your drag properly). One of the biggest mistakes I see is people using too-large hooks.

Hey there sc/out/s,

Motorcycle anon here, was asking for advice on purchasing a rod + reel yesterday. After taking in all the information you guys shared, I spent some time in Sportsman's Warehouse this morning.

I ended up buying a rod.

Okuma SST-S-663 L. It's a 6'6", light, three-piece rod. Came with a little hard case tube that's nice for transport, and will prevent me from accidentally breaking it in transit. Pic related.

How did I do? Good choice for general purpose fishing for small fish to eat in Arizona and surrounding states? If I fucked up I can always return it and get something else, maybe a shorter ultra-light? Idk.

They didn't have the specific reels that were suggested, and nothing really stood out to me, so I'm going to read up a little more on them and maybe check out some other stores.

Sounds to me like you're not letting the line straighten out during your casts. When you go back and forth without letting it uncurl it creates a whip action that snaps the fly off. I'm a noob so I could be completely wrong but that has been my understanding while learning to cast in my yard with yarn flies

lots of things can do that, do you haul aggressively? rushing the cast sometimes does that. do you hear snapping popping noises sometimes in back of you when you cast?

slow down your casting, take a pause in your backcast, literally squint and turn your head and watch your loop unfurl. when its out relatively straight youll feel the rod load and this is the time to sslowly accelerate your forward cast
Im guessing it may be due to your timing. slowing it all down, clearing your mind and focusing on the mechanics sometimes helps.
>>
>>1016662
Anon that recommended the F&S rods and Okuma reels here. A light action rod might be a bit too light for any real bass fishing, but that's not to say if you hook into one fishing for something else it can't handle it.

Good job on getting the travel rod.

I have no personal experience with Okuma rods (nobody local carries them and I'm not ordering one online on just good faith), but they seem to unilaterally get good reviews.

Does anyone have a case study on catch and release that showed even with non-ideal circumstances, a fish's tolerance for stress is far more than anyone single catch and release event?

My friend honestly believes you need to baby every fish you catch with wet hands, cutting hooks, and never taking it out of the water for more than 5seconds
>>
>>1016674

>that's not to say if you hook into one fishing for something else it can't handle it.

Kind of what I was thinking, and the guy at the store said it could handle it if I snagged a small catfish or something. I'm trying to keep bulk and weight down, so this was about my upper size limit.

I saw a handful of telescopic rods also, but I was worried they would be too shit compared to a two or three piece. Anyone have any experience with Sougayilang / PLUSINNO or telescopic rods in general?

I did look at some Okuma reels, but they didn't have the ones you mentioned.

Daiwa, Pflueger, Penn, Shimano, Okuma, and Abu Garcia all had decent looking reels in the size and price range I'm looking at ($60-120 or so), and they all seemed really similar. How do you guys choose a reel? Any of these brands I should gravitate to or avoid? Best warranties / customer service?
>>
>>1016677
>I know when I first learned I would sometimes let the back cast go for too long and my fly would be hitting the ground
This, and not watching my backcast and getting hung up in trees/brush.

I've caught more oakfish and stickbass than anything else on my fly rod, mainly because I don't have a boat.
>>1016684
Telescopic rods are universally and categorically shit, and none of the respectable manufacturers make them for a reason. You made the right choice with the 3-piece travel rod.

I'm pretty sure the Stratus V's are a Dick's exclusive.

I like Shimano reels for the most part, even their cheap ones are at least okay and they make some of the best reels going at the highest price bracket. Daiwa's cheaper reels are junk but they do have some good ones once you clear the $75 bracket. Okuma doesn't make a bad anything, but the Stratus V's seem to hit a particularly sweet bracket on price:perf. I think Abu's are overpriced for their quality due to having a history longer than Zebco they're milking, but they're not junk. I think Okuma outclasses Pflueger at all price brackets, but Pflueger President reels are decent (refer to my earlier argument with the guy that recommended the President for specifics). I don't think they have a small-ish spinning reel better than the President but under $120.

Best customer service I've had to deal with is Mitchell. They're decent reels, but at the same time they're the only ones I've had to actually use the warranty with--I got a lemon, haven't from any other brand. YMMV. Okuma CS is meh but they have a long warranty period. Abu CS is shiiiiiiiiiitttt, they start blaming you and claiming [totally fabricated abuse] voided your warranty before you even tell them what's going on. Never used Shimano's, Penn's, or Daiwa's CS so no idea on that.

Let's put it this way:

My grandparents lived in Clearwater, FL, and had a house on the Bay with a dock. I would take my cheapo $25, 5'0" UL Shakespeare combo down there and catch pinfish (basically saltwater bluegill) off the dock on hotdog chunks.

One time a 3', ~30lb lemon shark smacked the pinfish I was fighting. I landed it after a 3 hour fight on 4lb line. 2 days later I got bored and was flogging the water with a small buzzbait and hooked a ~9lb [some form of jack that I never positively ID'd], fought it for around 20 minutes before landing it.
>>
>>1016684
I have reels from shimano, pflueger and abu. I've only had 1 issue and pflueger customer service was outstanding.
>>
>>1016680
It depends on a lot of stuff though. The species, the water quality, health of the other fish, ect. but most fish should be fine even if you're pretty rough. Don't be a dick to the fish though. I'm gentle with them more out of respect than worrying about them dying.

>>1016688

>>1016680
I swear I've been catching same 2-3 halibuts in in the whole week multiple times because they are in exact same spot in the surf and have exact same size.

One of them is probably dead now because last time, despite being a dink, it managed to hit a 4.5 inches moving crankbait in fast current very accurately somehow and get the whole thing in its mouth and got hooked with the back treble on its gills from the inside. RIP dink halibut.
>>
>>1016688

>Telescopic rods are universally and categorically shit.

I just had that intuition that they would be, glad I steered clear.

>Abu is overpriced, CS is shit.

Good to know, honestly the Abu reels I looked did "feel" cheaper than comparably priced options from other manufacturers. I'll probably avoid them.

Seems like it's kind of a wash from one company to another, and more depends on the specific reel in question.

>>1016690

>$25, 5'0" UL Shakespeare

That's exactly what I'm replacing, actually. 5'0" Shakespeare "Cirrus" UL that my dad gave me when I was 10 or something.

Good to know the light rod will probably be fine. I looked at a couple of ultralight travel rods, but they seems so thin I decided the light was probably a better choice.

Opinions on front vs rear drag adjustment on a spinning reel? Rear honestly seemed more convenient, but there must be a disadvantage because front seems to be much more prevalent.

not all of them, usually the best aren't
sometimes there are days where flyfishing kills it
some days there arent
i've had days where all the fish (bluegill in this case) wanted was a dry fly presentation, so i tied on a foam ant, and outfished everyone there, by size and numbers using maggots, because the seasoned bluegill in that over-fished lake spook at loud plops, and people say "there's only dinks in there" because of it
other times they wont touch anything tied, and you just have to accept that some days, a conventional lure, or live bait, is better. usually flyfishing is already a hinderence, but thats part of the fun, the challenge

I'm pretty sure they can all see it or feel it, but it depends on the species and fishing conditions. When going for bass, they are too focused on the big moving bait to even notice the line. I hear trout are super shy so if you're fishing a heavily pressured trout spot, flouro might help.

i'd say you did pretty well, that's about what i would reccomend for small lures (curly tail grubs, inline spinners, small cranks) and just bobber with small hook for general small fish to eat. should be perfect for panfish and trout, but still handle most fishing pretty nicely. i didnt see your initial post, but if you want to just grab a functional reel that's actually really good for the money, i'd reccomend an okuma avenger in a 20 or 25 size, i've had mine in a 40 for ~5 or 6 years now, and it is a really nice reel for the money. then either 6 or 8 pound test line, or 15-20 pound test braid should be a nice addition to that

ive heard studies done where fish handled roughly (dry hands, dropped on the ground, bleeding upon release, faught to too high a level of exhaustion, etc) have anywhere from a 40%-60% chance of living, depending some factors. obviously a trout is more sensative than a carp or catfish, and needs more gentle handling, and most saltwater fish are more robust than freshwater
>>1016684
okuma, penn, shimano, and daiwa are all usually pretty hard to fuck up
and i've actually got an eagle claw packit rod i got for $20 as part of a combo. the reel was absolute garbage, and i replaced it with slightly less garbage of a reel, but i really like it. i've even gotten 20 inch pike on it no problem

During an Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation study, up to 43 percent of fish released after being caught died within six days as a result of inadequate holding and weigh in procedures during tournaments.[14]

More recent studies reported in Montana estimate that approximately 20% of released trout die from injuries or stress and even those that don't die, their injuries may significantly reduce their ability to feed and grow.[15]

Rear drag is more parts, more expensive to make and doesn't work as well.
Front drag is right there where you're attaching the spool anyway. Might as well make it a screw, put some friction discs in there and call it a drag.
Rear drag is nice in theory-especially if the reel has quick change spools at the push of a button-but hardly anybody ever changes spools, and any spare spools usually just get lost. It's just not worth the extra cash.
>>
>>1016709
Well I'm going on a fishing trip memorial day weekend with some work friends and I don't want to look like a noob. We're mainly fishing for catfish, which I've done several times in small farm ponds. I've always used these premade catfish rigs that have a black leader line. I feel like I should have a lot more luck than I do on these little stocked ponds, so I was debating whether or not to buy fluorocarbon leader line and make my own rigs. I just dropped $130 on an Abu Garcia C4 baitcaster and bought some 50 lb test braided line
>>
>>1016711

I know this is probably controversial, but I've always thought catch and release was fucking stupid.

I wont harvest game of any kind that I don't intend to eat.

The other side of this is that if everyone was keeping all their catches, you'd depopulate everything and there would be no fish to catch anyway. That's almost certainly true, and the only real solution is for people to start treating fishing more like hunting. Fish less often, stop after catching fewer fish, and enjoy responsibly.

Unfortunately that will probably never happen, and fishing hobbyists wont limit their hobby fishing for the sake of preservation, and so you have what we have now.

They can, sure. Especially with the higher test lines and thicker braids.
With sub-10lb mono it's usually fine enough that they don't care as much.
Now if there's a LOT of fishing pressure they'll figure it out right quick, and that's when you have to REALLY go down the rabbit hole. You'll end up with a rig like a European carp fisherman, super fine tapered leaders and all.

>buy both egg sinkers and pyramid sinkers in varous weighs
then for rigging
>use a palomar knot to tie your 40 pound mono to the swivel
>either use a palomar knot or a snell knot to attatch the hook
>thread the smallest weight you can reasonably get away with to keep your bait on the bottom on to your line
>then a bead
>then tie the other end of the swivel to your main line with another palomar knot, but since its braid run the doubled over line through the eye twice so it doesnt slip
its easy, fast, and effective.

Enough of one for you to be focused like a laser on it.

Skid is disgusting, both inside and out. If you take a look at him, he's a slob. Why does he even have a tripcode? If I were running 4chan, I'd ban Skid. I'd look him right in that fat, ugly face of his and say, "Skid, you're banned."
>>
>>1016738
Thank god you're not running 4chan, then.

Yeah, I get that. CnR really exists solely for people who enjoy the act of fishing so much that they want to do it more often than they either want to, or responsibly / legally can harvest.

I get the purpose. There's no direct equivalent, but it would be kind of like knocking duck out of the sky with a net only to release them just because you like duck hunting, but 20% of them break a wing during the process. I'm not saying CnR shouldn't be allowed or anything, just explaining why I won't ever put a line out unless I intent to harvest and can do so responsibly.

Commercial harvesting is definitely responsible for depleting saltwater populations, but I'm only talking about fresh water.

Skid is crude, rude, obnoxious and dumb -other than that I like him very much.

>posts in obscure general thread on anime website
>must be a wigger/nigger

The absurdity of your logic is what infuriates me, even more so than your bulbous head.
>>
>>1016708

They can. Whether or not they care depends on lots of stuff. Catfish don't give a crap. Trout care more. Fish that are skittish and heavily pressured care more than those who have never seen a lure before.

Whatever happens, pls don't try and post the new OP yourself. It isn't complicated at all but after the one time you tried, I reccommend just letting it get to Page 4 and TXfag or somebody else who isn't mentally ill can do it.

>>1016772
oh, yeah, no, after that one try im done with it.
