hey /out/
I'm currently in trade school for welding/machining/manufacturing, but I've been realizing lately that if I have to work a job where I'm inside I'm going to be miserable. Every day I'm inside and the weather's nice is so depressing, the only time I feel really good is when I'm out alone in the woods and nature.

What kind of career field can I go into to work outside in the woods? First things that come to mind are park ranger, wilderness guide, and firewatch. What other choices do I have if I want to live a life out in the wild?

I've considered being a hermit in the wild/vagabond before.

What are some good/stable /out/ careers or jobs?

If I have to live most of my life inside around civilization I think I'd end up shooting myself.

>What kind of career field can I go into to work outside in the woods?
Being a logger

Also I'm interested in becoming a wilderness guide but haven't looked into it much yet, if an anon could tell me what it's like I'd be interested.

Farmer here.

Become a farmer.

Just don't become a stupid farmer who makes more work for himself than he should (99% of small farm farmers do that.)
>>
I recently left my welding gig for timber cruising, make good money camping and hiking, the data collection procedure is a bit of a learning curve at first..but once you get it it's easy

>mfw I'll be a logistics intern this summer in Colorado at Deer Hill Expeditions.
>Get to come back as an assistant guide next year if I do well this summer
>fully paid food, lodging, stipend, and an expedition

Excited as fuck.
>>
>>1015431
what kind of work will you be doing?
how do I get into that field?
>>
>>1013919
I think you have depression anon
>>
>>1015434
>what kind of work will you be doing?
The company runs backpacking, river, and community service trips for teenagers out in the southwest. It's my job to meet them out in the middle of nowhere at set meeting points throughout their expeditions (delivering food, water, gear, etc), repair and process their gear once they get back to base-camp, cook meals, and learn as much as possible from the guides themselves.
>how do I get into that field?
Get a WFR certification, it will boost your attractiveness as a candidate tenfold and let companies know you're serious about being an outdoor professional, build a decent outdoor resume of your skills, experience, and document the trips you've taken yourself, and do lots of volunteer service work.
>>
>>1015437
i know i do. i spend a lot of time outside to alleviate it, which is one reason I want to work outside.
>>1015439
that sounds awesome, thanks for the advice anon.
>>
>>1015461
No problem anon, it's all about making decent connections, having an established track record, certs, and doing enough grunt work until you can work your way up. Same with the depression, it's partly why I do what I do.
>>
I've been a park ranger. It can be cool depending on the agency. I worked for OPRD while getting a degree in forestry. In Oregon, our state park rangers are basically just janitors that get to do cool stuff occasionally. Also the public is really shitty and the state limits ranger's law enforcement/emergency response capabilities. You often find yourself just watching as a crime or medical emergency goes down. People begging you to intervene and you're just like "lol, sorry!"

As others have said, be a logger or timber cruiser. And prepare to deal with seasonality. Currently my summers are spent doing sale prep for the USFS, and winters I do a wildlife monitoring job.

You'll need at least an associate's degree for most forestry jobs, unless you take up cruising or logging.
>>
Plenty of welders and fabricators that work outdoors, in fact there's more of those than jobber type ones that work in shops. Ever seen a bridge or building? It's not built in a workshop and sent to the location.
>>
>>1015966
>and winters I do a wildlife monitoring job.
That's really neat. What sort of wildlife?
>>
>>1016043

Mostly amphibians. They start breeding and laying eggs around January or February here. Early part of the winter is usually planning and office work. Not in the water to survey until the end of January most seasons.
>>
>>1013919
You can find work as a combo welder or a machinist for a general contractor in refineries. Chase the turnarounds whenever you need money. You can be innawoods inbetween jobs.
>>
>>1013919
I'll be marking timber this summer in the UP.
>>
>>1014018
I'm an adventure guide. The job is fun, the pay is pretty average and you spend most of the time making sure dumb cunts don't kill themselves.
>>
>>1013919
I'm in a similar position. I'm going into my last year of a computer science degree, but I realized I'd rather off myself than waste away inside an office for the next 30 years of my life.

It sucks that I wasted all this time and money but I might as well finish my degree. What can I do after I graduate? Will I be able to use my comp sci degree for anything /out/ related?
>>
>>1016311
Do you work with Northern Hardwoods, by chance? You very well may be out marking timber like 5 miles from our families hunting camp.
>>
>>1014060
How's farm life? Did you buy your land? Lately I've been more and more interested in making a living out of farming/gardening, but I'm a city rat with no land or experience. Enjoying my pots.

Currently studying filmmaking with a focus in documentary. My goal is to make nature films and other neat shit like that. So while I'm in college I'm also gaining a lot of good skills working in the guiding industry that will help me out later. I don't care if I'm poor forever, that's my plan and I'm sticking to it.

Fuck office work.
>>
>>1015291
how did you manage to make that switch? i'm also in an entirely different field but would be interested in getting into timber cruising.
>>
>>1013919
If you happen to be into skiing/snowboarding, I know some people that have a great gig at resorts. Welders are needed for making rails and features for terrain parks, sometimes in an equipped shop on the mountain, and some winter employees do trail maintenance in the offseason. Also by necessity they live in some pretty /out/ friendly places.
>>
>>1019282
how do i find this sort of job? where do I look? that sounds fucking great
>>
>>1019373
Get to a ski resort and start asking
>>
>>1013919
Just learn how to live cheaply and get a job that is OK with you taking entire summers off. You'll still be able to go out on the weekends during spring, winter and fall, but having the entire summers off will hold you over in the meantime.
>>
>>1016458
I'm exactly in the same situation anon - last year of CS degree and only thinking about desk job brings suicidal thoughts. I'm thinking about making anything to do IT job remotely, as it's easy buck and you can get plenty free time that way to go /out/. To my knowledge there are little to zero /out/ jobs linked with CompSci degree, though.
>>
Bump because I am also interested. Gonna graduate High School, but I have no idea what would be a good career path.
Not a fan of a lot of things, but I like the outdoors.
>>
>>1021567
what are you passionate about?
>>
>>1021838
To be completely honest with you, nothing. I am passionate about nothing.
I haven't had a chance to spend much time /out/, because I am a city lad. But I really do like it.
>>
>>1016458
>>1021456

Having a desk job isn't awful at all. Especially in CS where you can snag a flexible, well paying job in a good location with excellent office amenities - think startup environments as opposed to cube farms. I guarantee you won't find an /out/ job that can offer you as high of a salary and career flexibility as software offers.

Use your money and free time to fund your outdoors interests. That way you can have the best of both worlds with a great career and enough time and money to enjoy doing what you enjoy.
>>
I think it would be cool to be a fisherman.
>>
>>1021857
Do you plan on going to college? If so, take a gap year, go work on a farm somewhere, live on the street, I'm dead serious.

Best thing I ever did was get out in the world and figure my shit out for a few years. I can't even tell you how many friends I have who are dead inside because they invested $100,000 in degrees they didn't want and now live month to month is a shit tier job while I was able to stumble and find what I'm passionate about. 18 year olds don't know what they wan't in life.
>>
>>1016813
Best to work as an independent contractor, call a resource consulting agency and see if they know of anyone willing to train you. Be aware, if you work independently you will be required to buy your own equipment, relascope, tree bore, d-tape, rangefinder..etc.
>>
>>1021915
I don't plan on going to college, and that might be a mistake. But I really don't want to go through more bullshit.
I really need to follow your advice, I feel like that would work.
I was raised in the city though, and never worked that hard but that needs to change.

Also those lifes sound depressing, would not want that.
>>
>>1013919
Get a job welding/repairing farm equipment.
>>
>>1021456
You can do what some do, vandwell and do freelance from time to time.

This to, offices today are cool as shit and you have a flexible schedulle most off the time.

Look into vandwelling as well e.g https://www.reddit.com/r/vandwellers/comments/4vtwby/any_software_engineers_here/?st=j331bllo&sh=f0f65ace

I bet you're one of those faggots with a yoga ball seat or who never stops talking about your standing desk and how sitting is the new smoking.
>>
>>1022192
>I don't plan on going to college, and that might be a mistake. But I really don't want to go through more bullshit.
Absolutely nothing wrong with that. With each passing year college prices inflate as the quality of the education goes down. College can be a very very good thing but only if you absolutely love your field and want to build a network within it.
>>
>>1024755
Agreed, I don't want to be 100K in debt. Not to mention all the SJWs and socialism in college.

Only thing is that a lot of jobs require a degree nowadays.
>>
>>1023925
>standing desk
jesus christ, i can't wait for this meme to die.
