Knives and other Sharp /out/ shit

Just ordered that jaeger puukko someone recommended in the last thread, stepping up from a companion ss. Did I goof and should I have gone with the bushcraft black? Also best sharpeners for the field?

Bruh, just git a gud ferro rod. You can start fires and sharpen you're blade at the same time!
>>
Are those mora's drop poinrs; How are straight back blades for batoning, skinning etc?
>>
>>1013741
When I was a teen I had a Mora and it was a tough mother fucker. I abused it so much as a teenager would have done. Throwing it, fire damage, batoning, water damage you name it. It used to have such a nice grip to it, and the metal runs ito the handle preventing it from snapping
>>
>>1014232
>How are straight back blades for batoning, skinning etc?

Best for batoning

Not as good for skinning, but they still work
>>
>>1013749

Nice

I've gone hatchet and muh Buck 110 or a Mora.

Knife is mostly for food nowadays. Hatchet does everything else.

I am also going to get one. It's either gonna be a british service model or a Bhojpure from gurkha imports.
I have more practical tools but a completely handmade 1 pound blade with sheath for 100 bucks sounds so good.
>>
>>1014232
Anything thick enough to baton with without it immediately snapping is going to be sub-par for skinning (or any other form of cutting).

Anything even halfway sharp will suffice for skinning though, people did it for millennia with fucking rocks.
>>
>>1014652
>muh full tang
>>
>>1014904
I've just always preferred kukris. A hatchet is a very handy tool that I'm proficient with but I really shine with a kukri in my hands.
>>
>>1015088

They pretty much are with the Companion and Bushcraft. Only your pinky isn't covering the blade.

You won't pull one out of the grip.

The old Classic wood handle ones could break when the timber wasn't looked after and it was left to dry out/rot.
>>
>>1015153

YouTube it, plenty breaking off, or the knife snapping right at the start of the shit tang.
>>
>>1015194

They break if you beat them with wood into other bits of wood. That's really abuse.

You can baton with them on small bits for kindling, but that's about it (and all you need anyway).

What's the best fishing knife, /out/?

I've got a Buck 119 Special meme hunting knife that I actually successfully gutted and quartered a moose with (with a couple quick sharpens during the act), and an Al-Mar SERE 2000 folder, but no filet knife.

If I'm going fishing in lakes / streams for small trout, bluegill, etc, am I fine with what I've got? If not, what's the best knife for cleaning / prepping. I'm willing to spend some money for something that will last my lifetime.

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=choil
>>
>>1015197

I'm talking about people batoning 2 inch thick pieces of soft wood. I'll feather stick and carve wood with them, I'll stick to using my bk7, or esee 6 for bigger stuff, any bigger than four inches, I'll just split it with a hatchet.
>>
>>1015522

When I used to go:

Buck 110; you can use the end to bash the fish over the head to kill them (you could use the 119 to do the same; I liked the folder because I just kept it in my trousers).

Fillet knife for getting meat off them; I had a few. You want one to you can really get up against the bones and to skin easier if skinning fish is your thing. Any cheap fishing shop one will work well enough; Rapala works.

The Buck 119 will work for killing and gutting fish.
>>
>>1015652
>I'm talking about people batoning 2 inch thick pieces of soft wood.

Probably a flaw in the blade.

They do mass produce them, and you're going to run into some that have flaws.
>>
>>1015655

Alright. It's been years really since I did much fishing, so I'll use the folder and 119 that I've already got for now to see if it's enough.

If I decide I need a fillet knife I'll check out rapala.

Thanks anon.

I use a 5 inch eze lap super fine oval sharpening steel to keep my knives sharp while in the bush (link: http://eze-lap.com/kitchen_culinary_foodservice_use/oval-rod-sharpeners/)

When at home I use a home made leather stropping block with 0.5 micron diamond compound to get things razor sharp. Pic related.
>>
>>1015419
No. I did some research few months ago - saw this knife 10 years ago, friend had it, and I wanted it, but I'm not a geardo and have other good knifes, so...
Turns out, the new ones are made using a much, much worse alloy, you can google it, people talk about them.
If you still want it, google and look for an older version with better blade material.

>Bk2 is the most pointless knife-shaped object ever designed

Depends

It will replace a hatchet just fine, but you can use it for knife tasks also.

It doesn't do either the best, but it does both reasonably well.

If you only want to take one knife into the woods with you and do pretty much everything, it'll do it.
>>
>>1017163

See >>1017475

I've used a hatchet + Mora/smaller bush knife combo or the BK2 when /out/

The BK2 does the job of both the hatchet and smaller knife; processing wood and food prep/making kindling. It doesn't do each task as good, but it works good enough.

Gimme some suggestions to a stainless woods/hunting knife in the $120 range. G10 handles (anything but micarta really) and a kidex sheath a plus. ESEE 4 stainless seems like the best option.

Batonny chop chop looks like so much effort when a 1 lbs hatchet can do the same job for less... I don't get it
>>
>>1017798

I take it you haven't used a BK2 like a hatchet?

You can split wood without even needing to baton with it, because of its weight.

The steel is fine for food prep and carving.
>>
>>1018048

You can use big knives of similar weight to split wood like a hatched just as easily.

If a similar weight knife has trouble splitting with a whack, then a hatchet will too.

bought a plate steel kukris this morning from a village farm shop

blade is super light but I know it won't hold a good edge, finish is rough to say the least and the absence of a flared handle makes it hard to keep a grip
it's got an interesting blade profile, doesn't curve forward much and has a distinct arrow leaf point

wounded a feral dog last night and made a walking stick this morning

Looks good man. I'm a believer in function over form. Knives are tools and overly fancy or exotic materials are a waste in my opinion, especially if the owner doesn't know how to keep an edge on the blade.

Out of interest, what did you make your knife out of? What type steel is it?

No, thanks, I'll stick to my 16'' kukri, or, you know, an actual hatchet.

>carving

making feathersticks is not carving.

The bk2 is literally pointless. Look at that photo I posted earlier - that Temagami will do everything a bk2 does 1700% better. And no - you don't get to get out of this by saying "what about chopping", because the BK2 is shit at that too - it's too short, poorly balanced (too much weight in the handle), and has a bad handle to make a good (or even halfway decent) chopper.
And it's too thick, too wide, with bad geometry, and a poorly designed handle for general utility use.

I'll take my knife over that shit 11 times out of 10.
>>
>>1015615

So you can choke up on your blade if you had to, for precision cutting. also makes it easier to sharpen the full length of your blade.
>>
>>1013741
