I only ask because I paid just over 50$ for my silver max combo, and at dicks toda I saw they had just the reel priced at 49.99.

Is the rod in the combo trash?

I put a Rage Craw on a chattermeme hook, should I flip it the other way?

The way it's facing now, I'm concerned that the claws and the blade might fuck with each other.

It's just a GX2 right? The casting rods aren't super garbage, but you'll want to upgrade eventually. If you're mostly using moving baits I'd just keep the uglystik, but if you're using Texas rigs or bottom lures the sensitivity of a better rod helps a lot.

>>1013543
Definitely turn it the other way
>>
>>1013543

Flip it. Crawfish swim backwards.

Thanks guys, it's definitely one of my nicest catches yet, both of them really.

20min prior to catching them I switched lure so I could fish over some shallow water and it sure paid off.
Sometimes they surprise me with how little water they need to swim around in. There must have been 15-20cm of water where they got hooked.

Wew lads what a day. Started out by driving north a half hour to that river I fished last time and today the water was stupid high. There was a bunch of shit blocking the launch but I just pushed it all aside and went anyway. I threw the jerkbait the whole time to test the waters so I could figure out where they were and I figured that out pretty quick. Ended up with 6 small mouth and 3 over 3 pounds. Biggest being a little over 4 pounds. The best thing about the whole day is I tied on that prop rapala that anon sent me thinking there ain't a way in hell im catching anything on this but I just wanted to see how it worked. First cast, swear to god, pic related explodes on it right after it lands. Thing nearly gave me a heart attack and I didn't even know what it was at first. I swore it was a big pike because he was pulling way harder than any of the other bass I caught that day. I got everything but the blowup on my camera, shit was so sweet.
>>
>>1013716
absolutely, if your drag isn't loose enough or your rod is too stiff, it will shock the line, and snap it almost instantly

I feel ya on the panfish bait thing. I have been searching for more real small stuff and sometimes Walmart will have some cool shit in those assorted Yum boxes on the bottom shelf. Lots of that stuff is still too big for those days when the fish are picky and even big Mayans are only hitting insect sized stuff. The majority of the small Yum bags are like 1/8oz jighead sized.

There's always the tiny Gulp grubs and minnows that come in the jar. Otherwise those little purple "Puddle Jumpers" I found were pretty cool.

Thankfully I noticed before any actually dug in. Ticks are one of the few things about the outdoors that I'm kinda worried about.

>>1013716
Yeah that's one of the few problems with braid is there's no shock absorbtion at all, so a very sudden and violent shock can break it. It's more of a problem with lighter line like that.

Targeted alot of these bastards. I use mono( 15lb Berkley Big Game Green) for the stretch. I tie that to a black (carp koi don't like shiny) swivel. I use a 12" of 30lb braided leader tied to #4-6 octopus hook with a hair-rig. I will Either free line bait or clip a weighted pencil bobber to the leader.

I use lighter drag with koi and carp than I do with catfish. They have a softer mouth so you can pull hooks easily. The stretch of the mono helps with that. I use braided leader because of that sensitive mouth aswell. You can go with mono leader but I just have had better success with braid.

Hey guys new to the board...loving it so far. Are there any other central Cali fish bros on here? Getting back into the sport after a long 15 year hiatus. I have a goodly supply of stuff, but as always I'm always looking for the new hot ticket to land em.
Also may be a silly question but has anyone ever bought no name tackle off of wish or geek? If so pros/cons? Shold it be avoided at all costs? If ya never bothered to look on there, take a look for your self.
>>
>>1013843
Huh neat.

>>1013878
I would stay away from no name hard baits, terminal tackle, and line. Soft plastics should be fine.
>>
>>1013881
Kinda what I was thinking too. But honestly from looks alone some of the hard baits don't look much different from the name brands. But that's hardly an objective statement. However at the price they are offered I'd only be out a few bucks. Maybe I'll test the waters and report back my self. If I got any soft baits I'd be looking for body's and trailers mostly. I still have a good supply of an old worm no longer available that I swear by and will use those till they are gone.
>>
>>1013887
Problem with a lot of them is that they crack and fill with water very easily, or something just breaks off randomly.
>>
>>1013887
I'd mostly be worried about hooks bending or the lure just coming apart. Also consistency. Like I know every lucky craft crank will run the same way, but the no names might vary in what they do.

But like you said it's only a couple bucks and they might work just fine so.

>old worms
I haven't been around long enough to have a lure I use go out of production. Thankfully the ones I use most have been around for a while so I don't think they'll go anywhere anytime soon.
>>
>>1013893
Yeah I like consistency also....terminal gear is easy...i was already expecting the hooks to be shit. I can easily fix that. But like they have 44 piece crank bait and popper sets for less than 20 bucks...if I find 5 that work well I'd feel I came out ahead?
Yeah they are old Mann's manipulator worms. They were my go to on a Texas rig...sold producers, and hold up well...some of the bags I have are close to 17 years old and they are still soft and pliable!
>>
>>1013878
Yeah I've bought a bunch of off-brand stuff.

Hardbaits need to be tuned, it's a way to save money if you need to and have the free time to tune them. Absolutely avoid no-name hooks, they're always always always super fucking soft (nothing like pulling a 4/0 EWG completely straight on a 1.5lb bass in open water...) and usually really dull. Soft plastics are okay. I'd avoid line, although I've not used any no-name line before on anything serious.
>>
>>1013897
If you're after good bargains on cranks, hit up the store brand or off-brand sections of big box stores.

For example, a Dick's near me is running 10 for $10 on their Jawbone (storebrand) lures. They have a Rat-l-trap lipless clone and a Strike King KVD 1.5 clone that have always run true for me, and I've bought probably hundreds of them by this point. They use Eagle Claw hooks, which are....meh, but work. Another good bargain is the Matzuos. $2.99 at Dicks or Bass Pro, although style selection is meh. They have a deep-running shad-shaped lure that works wonders, just wish they offered it in a shallower running one. Also a really good looking skitterpop clone.

For soft plastics, kinda hard to beat Big Bite Baits for the cheapos. $1.10-$1.49 a pack, between 6 and 10 plastics in a pack, great for figuring out what works in new water on the cheap. Fairly soft. I use a lot of their flukes. I also fish a lot of Yum worms, they have a 5" Senko clone that I think is actually better than the Senkos. Almost as soft, a fuckload more durable, $2.99 for a 12ct bag.
>>
>>1013831
i'd grab some 7-9 foot 1x (~11-14 pound test) tippets for the streamers and poppers, then the bluegill bugs and other flies fome 4x (~5-7 pound) should be adequate
grab your six, those poppers, and those clouser minnows, go out to that river when its low enough on your boat, and get some smallies on fly, you'll have fun (i dont know how much you've gotten on fly but a 1 pound fish on fly fel like a 5 pound fish on standard tackle)
>>1013833
>>1013839

Big Bite Baits makes really good stuff especially for panfish. They're also really stepping up their bad lures imo.

I can agree with that...but they are all made in China haha.

>>
>>1013908
Eh, I guess almost is pretty relative. Yeah, the Senkos are noticeably softer.

Maybe bass aren't as selective in my area or something, because if I'm not catching them on the Dingers swapping to a Senko won't produce fish either. Pretty much the only reason I even still buy Senkos is the color variety, there's a few colors that work VERY well where I'm at that Yum doesn't make, or even make anything close to.

Hard bait is a lot more complicated. They are finely balanced and required to be durable. A lot of good ones also have internal mechanism that help with casting and the overall action of the bait. If you have to spend on money on a lure, it would be on a suspending minnow hardbait because those are where quality can varies greatly.

I have lucky craft flashminnow and surf pointer for the surf in socal. You should be able to catch some good shit with those if you have beach access where you live.
>>
>>1013902
They are very surface oriented. I bet you could easily get one on fly. Just use dull colors, nothing shiny.

get on craigslist. I got a 12 foot sit on top with rod holders, seat, paddle, anchor, all for like 400 bucks. Kayaks seem like a meme. How are they better than a SOLO canoe? other than catching less wind and having cubbies.

A solo canoe (~12ft) will have similar/same speed, tracking, and maneuverability.

In addition a solo canoe will have more cargo space, a comfier seating position, and will weigh much less. Also easier to portage since it will have a yoke.

Discuss.

Not sure how but my musky rod is here already. I selected the free shipping that said it would be here in a few weeks but it's here now. Thing is an absolutly beef stick. It's still decently light though compaired to similar spec rods I saw at a few stores. I put 80# braid on my Abu so I think I should be all set to sling those shadzillas
>>
>>1014081
>How are they better than a SOLO canoe?

Nobody's bothered to make a dedicated fishing canoe with any combination of rod holders, anchor trolleys, fishfinder/transducer mounts, drive systems, etc that competes with all the kayaks out there that do the same for as competitive a price. And even if they did, they're competing against dozens of kayak offerings, so even with superior sales, they'd be outnumbered.
>>
>>1013912
I've only really notice a difference in clear water with a lot of pressure. Otherwise dingers have always worked. the only time I would fish exclusively senkos was if I was fishing tournaments.

If you really want to be poor about it you can make payments on kayaks you buy here

>>1014081
>A solo canoe (~12ft) will have similar/same speed, tracking, and maneuverability.
I highly doubt this

>a comfier seating position
There are kayaks with seats like in canoes

>and will weigh much less
Doubt this too. If anything they're close to the same.

>Also easier to portage since it will have a yoke
I would much rather drag my kayak or pick it up be the handle on the side than try to carry a canoe by myself.

Conoes have a higher CG and I definitely wouldn't want to be in one on rough water. I'd also give kayaks the advantage for shallow water most of the time.

That being said for camping on the river or extended river trips a conoe is great.
>>
>>1014118
>If you really want to be poor about it you can make payments on kayaks you buy here

I go there all the time and I never knew that. I'm definitely going to be poor about it come next year.

>>Doubt this too. If anything they're close to the same.

Nah, canoes are damned light. You can get them in the 30-40 lbs area. But they just don't usually have all the gear and amenities that come on fishing kayaks.
>>
>>1014120
Kek I'm doing it too in a few weeks I was just fucking with skid.

>Nah, canoes are damned light. You can get them in the 30-40 lbs area

I did not know that. I don't want anyone to think I have something against canoes. I just think a kayak is better for solo trips, but to each their own.
>>
>>1014120
>canoe
>30-40lbs
And how many tens of thousands of dollars would that carbon fiber monstrosity cost?

Meanwhile I can get a 10', 38lb roto-molded fishing kayak at Sam's Club for $250, or a 10', 29lb general purpose kayak at Dick's for $200.
>>
>>1014082
Don't you kinda want cranks to be kinda erratic and track in 50 different directions though?

I thought that's why everyone loved Wiggle Warts so much.
>>
>>1014153
...no.

You want them to dive to the depth they say they do, and you want them to do the same thing every cast.

Wiggle warts track true, they just have a VERY exaggerated wobble. Kinda like the Strike King KVD's--the side to side on them is huge. But they do the same thing every cast.

I nearly got skunked again this morning, but ended up catching a little dink LMB while trolling a rat-l-trap behind the kayak. Meanwhile my buddy caught at least 6 just using soft plastics. It's frustrating fishing with that dude because he always does significantly better than me even though we're hitting the same spots.
>>
>>1014131

You're looking at most at a couple thousand for those carbon fiber monstrosities that can get as low as 12 lbs. You can get fiberglass ones around 10-11 feet for a couple hundred, though.

And you can get a 10 foot, 30lbs canoe for a couple hundred. Not as cheap as 250, and not in a big box store, though.

Which of course goes back to my point that kayaks are just more ubiquitous/available/cheaper than canoes, especially fishing kayaks. It's why I ended up getting a kayak over a canoe.

If someone were inclined, I have no doubt they COULD make a dedicated fishing canoe with cost and performance similar to a fishing kayak.
>>
>>1014168

Are you using the same bait and presentation too? And if so, does he just get more hook ups and lose less fish?

>And you can get a 10 foot, 30lbs canoe for a couple hundred. Not as cheap as 250,

What is your definition of a couple?
>>
>>1014185

Many people take canoes on long trips in the wilderness and like a smaller one that's easier to haul around.

At some point, kayak manufacturers really started going after anglers and found a niche for themselves with more compact sit-on-top style loaded with features that you could reach all your needed stuff from a single seat. Canoes just never went in that direction.

>>
>>1014267
That sounds good. I would say 15lb feels a lot like 6lb mono and 30lb is closer to 12lb. I don't really like the 30lb for anything 1/4oz of less, but works well for 1/2oz+ baits.

I'll say it again, just remember that even though 30lb braid says it has the diameter of 8lb-10lb mono, the line isn't as smooth so 30lb braid is going to cast like 12lb mono even with the diameter of 8lb.

Do you have a boat?

1) The bridge would be my starting point. Under it in the shade and around the pylons.

2) I'd also hit those areas where the waterways meet. Especially those points.

3) The smaller coves along the far northern shore are also good candidates. The southern one looks like it has some kind of building structure extending out into the water.

Riverbends are also a pretty good place in general. The current slows down. Debris, detrius, and food that attracts fish also tends to concentrate on the opposite side shore rather than make the complete bend.
>>
>>1014338

I never went to Gander Mountain before the sale, but I can see exactly why they're going out of business. Even with the discounts, stuff was only just starting to be similar to Academy prices.

I'm a big fan of the little Booyah Pond Magic spinnerbaits, they are just too light to cast far on memecasters. But yeah, 3/16oz is nice. I rarely get bass on big spinners over 1/2oz unless you really hit a frenzy during pre-spawn.

>>1014430
Nah none of that

can a large bass exist(naturally) in a small body of water?
I have a natural pond in my backyard, that is self sufficient(EG the bluegill/bass have not been stocked in close to 2 decades)

anyways most of the bass are anywhere from 8-12" with the occasional 14-16" biggun.

anyways I had "seen" a fish several times in my life, and always assumed it was a black koi(which are also swimming around).

But yesterday I saw it, clear as day, a 20+" bass, easily 4" in girth, looking like it could swallow my whole hand and then some.

are my eyes(and water) playing tricks on me, or is it possible for a huge ass bass to grow to a size in such a relatively little ecosystem
>>
>>1014453
>>1014453
Big bass can live in thive in tiny ass farm ponds so yeah I'd say it's certainly possible. Start feeding them and get em all fat as shit
>>
>>1014453
The biggest bass I catch are in stock tanks. Cull the the smaller ones for fish fries and turn the big ones free to fight another day.
>>
>>1014453
I have gotten bass from really small ponds, like 100' by 50' in size maybe. But lots of 10"-12". It would be hard for them to get too giant unless there is a really good baitfish population and cover for them to reproduce and grow or maybe crawfish or somebody else is feeding them. Remember that bass take years and years to get 3lb+, especially places with cold winters.

Got my buddy to finally catch fish. I caught two dinks.

>>1014366
Where are you at anon?

>>1014453
Yes, but if the pond doesn't have a decent population of baitfish the bass have to resort to eating each other and that's not how you get big fishes.
>>
>>1014466
montreal
>>
>>1014470
Ah okay that makes sense. The bass are definitely post spawn down here.

I don't know why, but it always blows my mind that it can be 90 here and be cold up north. I guess I forget the world is as big as it is.
>>
>>1014453
if you want bigger fish more consistently, cull some of the 8-12 inchers now and then, the fish that grow past that size will have less competition for food, and the genes for faster-growing and bigger bass will pre procreated because dinks get removed. do the same with the bluegill, put the big gills back and take the medium ones and only big ones will be left.
it will take years of that for it to really pay off though
>>
>>1014473
Yeah but we spoiled down here with the bass fishing. 3lb bass are about medium size here and 4lb-5lb aren't uncommon. Up there, getting anything over 4lbs is a monster.
>>
>>1014489
Yeah but we have pike/muskies tho
>>
>>1014496
And we have alligator gar. I mean stuff just grows faster in the warm water. Not necessarily bragging or saying it is better because we lose out on some fun native US species but at least the bass can keep up a little better with minorities overfishing everything.
>>
>>1014502
Not saying you were. I'm just saying that if I want to get a good fight and catch a real monster, I wouldn't be targeting bass anyway
>>
>>1013747
Where can I order some? I've been checking tackle warehouse and my local sporting goods stores coming up with nothing.
>>
>>1014489
Am I the only one who would rather catch fish in the 3-4lb range than monsters? I feel like any bigger and on average they fight lazier.

That being said I honestly do not think anything is better than when a bass comes halfway out of the water and does a massive head shake and you see it's a 5+ cause the mouth is so damn big. I think that's a better feeling that nutting.
>>
>>1014506
Kinda depends on where I'm fishing.

Here locally, if it's over 2lbs you're basically just reeling in dead weight, they totally give up once they realized they're hooked. Fishing pressure is so high they get caught regularly enough to realize what's going on, and know they're getting thrown back.

Right about that 18"-20" and 3lb-4lb does seem to be some of the best LMB to catch. But it's still hit or miss with them, sometimes the 14" guys will break the water 3 times before you even get them to shore and sometimes a 19" fish will feel like a glob of weeds until you get em 10' from shore.

when catfishing for the first time today. only got 1 5lb flathead and a shit load of bites but that was it. they seemed to just tap my bait and then theyd either leave, or id yank on it and nothing. i was using cut bluegill on a slip sinker rig. 14 lb mono, 1oz sinker, steel leader, with a big as fuck hook. i know i was doing something wrong. other people were catching them left and right. they were using bobbers, dont know what they had on them.
do i need a different rig, different bait? both?
i'm going to start taking binoculars fishing so i can shamelessly spy on what people are using.

still happy i got my first catfish. really fun to catch. i did have one on the line that felt really big but came off after a minute.

Luke will teach you everything about catfishing. He's one of the most detailed guys on youtube which is funny because catfishing is pretty basic.

Were you using a circle hook? If so, then you were probably ripping the hook from their mouths. You need to let the hooks set themselves.
>>
>>1014528
How big was the hook? I don't go for catfish much and when I do, it's channel cats. But I'm thinkin they either felt the hook and dropped it or the weight was too close and heavy and when they picked the bait up, they felt it being held back. Idk.

Bait too big? Unless you just had bluegill picking at it and that's what you felt when you tried to set the hook. That happens with Texas rigs sometimes when a bluegill nips the tail of a lizard or some shit. Turtles too.

ohh I fucking hate turtles. Especially snapping turtles. Them and water snakes, we have like 12 species of water snake that look close enough like either copperheads or cottonmouths you don't want to take chances, and all of them will absolutely hit bass lures.

I caught this fucker not 30 seconds after taking his pic on a Texas-rigged baby brush hog. Brown water snake, nonvenomous, but fuuuck not one I'd 100% ID if it weren't full sun.
>>
>>1014534
nah, i had circle hooks but rushed out of the house to meet my brother at the pond and forgot them. ended up tying on these premade leaders ive had forever but never used. i know luke always says not to set the hook, just real down after they commit, but i thought maybe that was only with circle hooks. pic related is pretty close to what i was using. should i let them take it until my rod stays down? do i still set the hook with these?
>>1014535
pic related. if that doesnt give you an idea, hook was about the size of a standard bic lighter. biggest hook i own. i tried a few diffrent sizes of cut bait. started with inch wide slices of bluegill, then worked my way down to cubes, threw worms on, everything i could think of. only one i actually caught was on a full bluegill steak. lots of bites on everything though. think i was just fucking up by either not setting the hook, or trying to set the hook. not sure which.
>>
>>1014537
Damn, that sucks they actually hit the lures. I've had turtles and birds go for baits, but never any sneks besides bullseye sneks.
>>
>>1014538
id set the hook with that, and when they hit, go in to freespool for a solid 10 count, pick up the rod, lock down and give a good jerk. thats what i usually do soaking big baits in the ocean and it seems to work, and thats what i did when i got my pb channel catfish (only about 24 in)
>>
>>1014542
A 2 foot channel cat is nothing to sneeze at.
>>1014541
Fished for 7 hours today. First 5 hours for bass, ended up catching a ~3lb snapping turtle on a half-ounce jig, and that fucking snek on the TX-rigged lizard, and zero bass. Last 2 hours I busted out my fly rod and threw Chernobyl ants for bluegill, ended up with ~30 'gills and a very small white crappie. Although nothing big enough to be worth keeping/eating.

I really need access to something other than the county parks.
>~7 acre lake
>90* day
>what felt like 37 gorillion fishermen
In reality it was probably around 70-80 different groups, usually families with small kids, but they were dense enough you couldn't just walk the banks and pitch. Which, for a weekend, is typical even if it was hot as fuck. They get fished SO fucking hard there's hardly anything left to catch.

I've always let cats take the bait for about 10-15 seconds. They like to gently grab before they really get it. You can either leave your bail open or set your drag looser so there's little resistance. Also what the other anon said about circle hooks. You don't want set the hook like normal.

They have a good selection of lengths from 7'2" to 7'4" to 7'6" and 8" as well as variations that are glass mix graphite rods for cranks.

Lot of spinning options but I only need one spinning rod because all I use it for is drop shots and small jerk baits and I already have one.
>>
>>1014506

My favorite fish to catch are those that can pull drag off my line. I usually go after catfish and carp so when I hook up the occasional bass, it's just not all that impressive.

On the other hand, after accidentally catching a 7lbs bass on ultralight tackle while targeting crappie, I have started bringing my lighter stuff along with me to chuck lures and live bluegill for the occasional bass.
>>
>>1014545
>>1014551

I still have dreams about the industrial park I went to once where I caught 3 20+ inch bass, a 30 inch channel cat, and several bluegill as big as my hand in the first 45 minutes to an hour.

The security guard drove around a couple times before coming up, asking if I had caught anything and making small talk before eventually asking me if I had an employee ID. I said no and he politely asked me to leave. No biggie.

So I call back a couple of weeks later asking to speak to the security department. Maybe there's some way I can go give my ID or something and get special permission to just fish.

"Oh don't bother. There's no fish out there anyway."

Sit on tops work best for fishing since it gives you access to more of the boat and are easier to right should they flip. What you want is the ability to be able to reach all your stuff from a sitting position, so spaces for accessory mounts (rod holders, fish finder, etc) are ideal.

Dicks sporting goods had a chart when i worked there, you want multi chine, or a tunnel hull (looks kinda like a u, so the flotation is on the outside, the pelican catch 120 uses it)
>>
>>1013870
Must not be a lot of prey fish in that water. Taking a bunch of fish out of there would be good for the health of that lake.

>>1014153
No.
You want your lure to have ACTION (which is why everyone loves WWs), but still run straight to you when you reel it in.
A lure that fucks way off track to the left or right is not only a huge hassle, it doesn't have the optimal action to make the lure look realistic either.

>>1014161
That's a breeding female.

>>1014192
That's because in Great-gramps's day back before cars were everywhere, guys would take their dates canoeing and use the large open space in the middle to screw. It's why some places in the Midwest still have local ordinances against canoeing after dark.

Yes.
One or two bass that size can exist in a small pond like that. It just beats the odds and then has the run of the lake for as long as it lives.
I grew up near a golf course water hazard that was like that-never stocked, just self-sufficient. Every couple of years someone would pull a 10+ pounder out of it.

So what is the best way to attach the kayak to a roof rack. I see multiple methods online. What is the best?

Also, should kayak be stored in an inhouse garage or it can be somewhere in the backyard. Can the environment damage to kayak. Note that I'm in socal and there is no extreme weather.

Also saw a couple of garfish jumping around in shallow water, but they werent really interested.

Most any kayak that can brave a lake and lazy rivers can handle backwater. It's the waves that get you in salt water. And corrosion.
>>
>>1014879
IMO the Duckett rods are better than any of the other ~$100 rods on the market. They have it all. Good blanks, stainless microguides, good reel seat, good grip, good proportions. The Skeets are tiered, some are not really any better than the comparably priced Shimanos and Abus, but the $80 combos are fucking awesome for the money.

Current Dick's employee and lifetime kayaker here. Unless it's strictly a pond/small lake kayak, avoid the fuck out of pontoon hulls (the inverse U shape), they're slow as balls and track poorly, and get BTFO by wind. Multi-chine (shaped like a W) unless you're going out in heavy current, it's a good blend of stability and speed/tracking. V-hull if you do a lot of fishing in current or it's always windy as shit, they're the fastest but least stable laterally.

Sit-on kayaks generally are wider and have a higher weight capacity for any given length, at the cost of being heavier and having weird or difficult grips in the middle. They're generally preferred for fishing as everything's a bit more reachable and they tend to be more stable due to being wider, and you're less likely to lose a ton of tackle into the corners of your hatches. However, they don't generally have the large storage bays if you also kayak camp.

Sit-in kayaks provide more protection from the elements (particularly sun, the only thing that sucks worse than sunburnt ankles is a sunburnt dick), and generally being narrower they will generally be faster at the cost of stability and weight capacity.

If you fish AT ALL out of a kayak, rig yourself an anchor trolley. It's like $5 in parts. Go buy a cheap 3lb grapple anchor and have at it. NEVER EVER tie your anchor off in the middle of the kayak, that's just asking for some asshole in a powerboat to capsize you with wake because you can't turn into it while anchored.
>>
>>1014861

My 12 foot kayak sits very securely on my rav4 with nothing but a couple straps.
>>
>>1014884
If you have crossbars on your roof rack, an actual commercial kayak carrier is the most secure.

I like the SwissCargo one, it works with 1 kayak, 2 kayaks, or 1 SUP and it's ~$130 and comes with a damn good warranty.
Just be aware that odds are it won't fit in a garage with the kayak mounted.

UV rays will damage ALL plastics, some faster than others. It is also preferable to store kayaks indoors to keep vermin from chewing up your seats and keeping spiders out of the thing. However, if you don't have anywhere in your garage to put it, rig a tarp or something and have it up off the ground. I've seen people hang it like a hammock with a rainfly over it, seems to work pretty well. If you have a sit-in kayak, rig a closure for the cockpit with bungee cords and tarp material to keep vermin and debris out.
>>
>>1014886

>tfw the only flyfishing I do is sunfish cuz no native trout
Trout parks are cancer btw. You have to compete with 77 gorillion other people, there's a daily fee, and they're so ridiculously overstocked you could literally throw a bare Aberdeen and catch your limit in 5 minutes.

I did buy a bunch of streamers over the winter to try to get some crappie, then promptly lost my only crappie hole due to flooding.
>>
>>1014900
How does that pull you over? It doesn't matter how big the fish is it doesn't pull more than like 8-10 lbs of pressure tops because of your drag. The only way I could see someone capsizing from a big fish is if it surprised them and they fell over which is your own fault and is in no way related to the size of the fish
>>
>>1014897
if the fish is on the side of the boat, and decides he wants to go down (from any depth by the side of the boat) if you're using heavy tackle and not leaning back to balance his force, you're going in

>>1014907
bass can be had on fly, so can pike, pickerel, carp, and a lot of other species. its worth looking in to fishing for them on fly rod
>>
>>1014909
>over which is your own fault
yeah, if you fall off your kayak from a fish, its your fault, but the potential to make a mistake and it happen is there, and not knowing what you're doing is what will cause it
>>
>>1014909
I use 30lb braid on my bass reel cuz I'm not about to lose a $10 lure to submerged stick #139074, and due to never hooking anything over 4lbs had the drag set stupidly high.

Hooked it at about the 1:00 position and it immediately made a run straight at, then past, me to the 6:00, couldn't reel it in fast enough or turn the yak at the same time, pulled taut all at once and over I went.

So yeah, 99-100% my fault. Hence the
>because I did basically everything wrong
line.
>>1014916
Bass aren't worth flyfishing for around here, too much shit in the water to run streamers and topwaters are good for about 1 hour a day 2 months out of the year due to very short springs and very hot summers driving them deep. I'll get one occasionally on a panfish popper but I don't target them specifically.

No pike or pickerel in any number here, and 1 lake stocked with muskies that always lurk around the brush piles. Also I don't have the right rod for muskie, it's a light trout/panfish rod.

I have no interest in catching carp on rod and reel, that's what bowfishing is for.
>>
>>1014911
Why, for what purpose, there's a perfectly good boat right there, how do you even unhook the fish in the kayak, this makes me angry
>>
>>1014926
Like most people that catch sharks, you get them close enough to grab/touch [part of shark well away from mouth], go "I caught this!" and cut the fucking line.

Smaller toothy fish you use a fish grabber or gaff. Smaller smooth-mouthed fish you lip 'em.
>>
>>1014926
that guy is probably some tourist, who went on a kayaking trip once in his home state, then saw an advert for kayak shark fishing, thought "that sounds fun" so he called the number, and so they loaded the gear, the rod, and the kayak in to the boat, drove him out there, dropped the kayak off in the ocean, sat him down in it, and gave him a fish he couldnt handle, and they knew he couldnt handle, so they have to have the "support" boat there to baby sit him while he's being stupid. that being said, there are people who do this right, and they are bad ass, they get big sharks, tarpon, even bill fish from kayaks, and the way its usually done is in pairs. they both fish, one of them hooks a fish, the other reels in and paddles after them, then when the fish is tired the friend in the other boat gabs it, unhooks it, and then passes control to the guy who got it for pictures. it usually lasts hours and goes on for miles
>>
>>1014926

Guy should have adjusted his drag if the thing kept pulling the rod out of his hands. He's just trying to horse it in.

Then again, it is a shark and if you play them too much, they'll pretty much exhaust themselves to death.

if he had gotten out of his seat, or even stood up entirely, and leaned back, he could have gotten away with it. the only reason he's falling over is because he's not leaning back
look at blacktip H (a guy who knows how to shark fish) handling a similar size shark, on what looks like a fairly similar kayak, with similar enough gear, sitting on the far side of the boat and leaning off, or even standing up. they do have a support boat, but i think that's more just for filming, and convenience, but realistically they could have used a second kayak

>>
>>1014978
Pre front is almost always better. Wind will fuck up topwater or shallow presentations but isn't necessarily bad fishing. If it was a really severe front or lasted a while it can be good fishing afterwards but there's usually a 12-24 hour lull after one.

Only native fish I ever kept in one of my tanks was this 2" channel cat I got in my bucket of minnows. Kept him in the 75gal until he got like 8" and then let him go. Cunts grow fast in a 78F aquarium when they are fed well.

I posted this in the knife thread, but this might actually be the better place for it.

What's the best fishing knife, /out/?

I've got a Buck 119 Special meme hunting knife that I actually successfully gutted and quartered a moose with (with a couple quick sharpens during the act), and an Al-Mar SERE 2000 folder, but no filet knife.

If I'm going fishing in lakes / streams for small trout, bluegill, etc, am I fine with what I've got? If not, what's the best knife for cleaning / prepping. I'm willing to spend some money for something that will last my lifetime.
