Grew up in AZ, live in UT now. I'd give the edge to UT with a more even balance of desert and mountain, with bigger more extensive mountains and more seasonal variety.

Washington. No question.
You've got a major metropolitan center (Seattle, Everett, Tacoma) with normal human amenities and a wide variety of culture that is less than 1.5 hours from literally any kind of wilderness you can imagine.
Want rugged forested mountains? Drive to the Snoqualmie area.
Want some insane technical alpine wilderness?
Drive to North Cascades.
Desert?
Go east.
Rain forest?
Jump on a ferry and drive 45 minutes to the Hoh Rainforest, probably the most pristine and untouched piece of forest in the lower 48. Oh, and there's a mountain range in the middle of it.
Something in between?
Literally just pick a spot somewhere in between.
And every single one of those places can be travelled to and explored in under a day, with time to get home for work the next morning.
Also, weed, guns, and gays.
Best place on earth.

Been in AZ for 15+ years, currently in Tucson and need more variety. Family lives in northern Idaho but that shit is way too small and extreme 4 seasons (winter 8 months of the year), came from growing up in Northern Michigan and Columbus, Ohio (midwest sucks). Looking for property with 4 temperate but definitive seasons. Looking at high desert locations I think, Northern AZ (kind of limited as far as cities), Southern Idaho (Boise area or around there), Colorado (close to mountains), and maybe Texas? Can someone help
>>1015767
American here.
Well fucking said.
Completely agree.
>>1015918
You're 2-4 hours from high desert, mountains, or forest pretty much anywhere in AZ. If you're ok with small town life, Payson is supposed to be pretty nice and meets your temperate 4 season requirement. I'm from Tucson, live in Phoenix now.
Colorado is gorgeous and you can get high desert in the Southern part of the state, or true mountains in the Rockies. Great place too, my folks live there now.
>>1015955
Let's say in between temperate and true mountains. I love the snow, just not 6+ months of the year. Is that possible in places like Colo?
>>1011891
Texas hill country is nice. But her fuked in the head if you believe its the most beautiful, but I'm partial in the same way to the Appalachians.
>>1011935
You have clearly never been to AZ
>>1015978
If I had to pick between canyons and mountains, I'd pick the mountains. Do places exist in the US of A that look like the pacific northwest but don't rain all the effin time?
The desert is beautiful, but
>insane heat, even if it is """dry heat"""
>snakes
>poisonous spiders and scorpions
>the above things making a home in your shoes at night
I'd rather take bears and moose and wolves over that shit any day. I grew up in WI so the cold doesn't bother me, in fact I love snow. I'm biased to my home state, forested rolling hills and lakes are great, but I am not so biased that I don't recognize superior beauty elsewhere. The Appalachians are nice, WA/OR/ID/UT are some of the most beautiful places in the lower 48, CO/WY/MT are GOAT. But desu if I relocate I aspire to go to Maine, I like the remoteness yet proximity to large cities at the same time, lack of grizzlies (along with snakes and large spiders and shit) and it has snowy winters and more varied elevation than WI. I think Maine is pretty much the closest state to WI other than Minnesota as far as scenery goes.
>>1015978
Where on the western slope is worth moving to?I will be graduating from nursing school in December nextra year,I really want to live in the rockies.Currently in CA,I go to CO every winter for snowboarding but I pretty much stayed in the front range.where should I go check out in the western parts of CO?

Eventually one of the guides, this huge scary looking black dude got so pissed with him so he just stood up, gestured around to the incredible landscape surrounding us and shouted "LOOK."

What's good gear for backpacking in AZ?
I'm moving there next year from WA. I have a 20 degree down sleeping bag and I'm wondering if that will be too warm for the area. I'm also wondering what kind of hikes there are down there. I'm used to awesome mountain ranges and alpine lakes, I seriously doubt AZ can compare but I'm curious as to what it has to offer.
>>1016809
the 20 degree bag will be good in the fall and winter unless you get in a storm. During the summer in the mountains the temperature will either be surprisingly cold or cool so you can just lay the bag on top of you. 20-25 degree bag is honestly the sweetspot

Bong here. Would love to work in America some day, and have given a little bit of thought towards what states I would potentially like to live in. What states have a good blend of /comfy/ and /out/? I like the sound of Wisconsin for comfiness but dunno what the landscapes are like there.
I'm more of a wintry/foresty guy than a deserty one if that helps. Deserts are great but my bong genes are incompatible.

Honestly for /comfy/ and /out/ I would choose Oregon. Absolutely beautiful, has mountains, coasts, spooky forests, the rarest rain forests in the world and high desert. Only problem is you have to have a strong enough mind to not go crazy after months and months of non stop rain.

>Car culture and modernism fucked over the American west.
The West is sparsely populated, hence the need for cars. Public transportation is expensive in rural areas and an anathema to the American emphasis on individual liberty. Free men transport themselves.
As for modernism, it goes without saying that a very recently urbanized area lacks varying styles of architecture.
