What do you guys have when /out/?
Do you carry a second pair?
>>
>>1010929
Get lasik
>>
>>1010929
I just keep careful. I run through the woods pretty hard. Worked in the woods. Worked on farms. Never ruined or lost a pair.

I hear eyes begin to get worse at a slower rate after age 26, so in a couple years is when I'll get lasik.
>>
I'm old, so I'm farsighted
I have a plastic magnifying glass as a backup for my reading glasses
In the mountains, I carry a second pair of sunglasses, which is a pair of the roll-up ones that you get a the eye doctor when they dilate your peoples
I have no desire to be above 12,000 ft without eye protection
I have found other people's lost sunglasses up there, and it always made me cringe

Gf is nearsighted. She brings prescription sunglasses and and her regular glasses.

Glasses have been good so far.
>>
>>1010949
These operations are performed thousands of times a day in America. Just like anything else, you're going to get a few fuck ups, usually at lower tier doctors.
>>
>>1010949
My Dad got lasik and they made his eyes extra good. Instead of 20/20 they gave him 20/10. Hes a fucking hawk now.
>>
>>1010959
How much would it cost to go with one of the best? I really don't want to mess up my eyes, because I'll literally kill myself.
>>
>>1010967
I don't know. I'm like you. No way I'm risking my vision.
>>
>>1010966
Shoot, I always thought 20/20 was the best.

>>1010968
Yea man fuck that. Glasses don't bother me at all, they've been good.
My only issue is if shit ever hits the fan we're fucked. Because glasses can only last so long.
>>
>>1010973
Fortunately, my vision isn't that bad. I only need glasses for driving to read street signs. I have no problem getting around everyday life without glasses otherwise.
>>
>>1010977
I can only see from close distances. Like 1 or 2 feet probably, I literally cannot read anything on my monitor with no glasses on. I might be able to drive, but I would avoid it.
Also doesn't your vision get worse over time?
>>
>>1010981
Mine just got worse when I was in high school and spent a lot of time day after day in a fairly dark room binge-reading books. It hasn't really changed sine I realized that I fucked it up from doing that.
>>
>>1010988
Fuck man. What do you recommend then? Keeping the lights on?
Usually when I am on the computer I keep all the nights off.

BUMPING

I'm very pleasantly surprised that somebody started a thread about this. I've been wondering the same thing for quite some time. So far I haven't lost or ruined a pair while outing. Glasses are a little inconvenient in rain/misty conditions and getting rid of smudges while /out/ is difficult..... any tips?
>>
Somewhere I've read about "exercises" one can do to improve vision? It would make sense, right? If far/near-sightedness and astigmatism are a muscular issue such intrinsic ocular muscle weakness or hypertonicity, one would think that physically training one's eyes would result in improved vision....

Has anyone done anything like this?
>>
>>1010929
This is what I need >>1010931

But I have a pair of prescription sunglasses so I always have those when I'm fishin and if something were to happen to my normal glasses I would just throw those on.
>>
>>1011017
I started it because I was also wondering the same thing haha!

>Glasses are a little inconvenient in rain/misty conditions and getting rid of smudges while /out/ is difficult
Indeed, but contacts are far worse. Keep some alcohol wipes in your bag, they clean nicely, lens dries fast, and they weigh basically nothing.
Microfiber cloth is also good, make sure it stays dry.

>>1011045
Yeah, I suppose those are good options. I already use both at home.

How about for LONG term out? On the magnitude of 2+ weeks? I'm mostly curious
as to what to do after we're all out of alcohol
wipes?

Pic from a trip I took to the Smoky mountains with some friends.
>>
>>1011051
Sorry that it's rotated. Don't know why...
>>
>>1010990
Any reading in general in any light setting causes your eyes to go bad over time, which is why the invention of glass allowed Europeans to read and write longer than the rest of the world, which is what ushered in the renaissance, and is why white ppl rule the world.
>>
>>1011051
>>1011054
No worries, looks beautiful. Well I think a few microfiber clothes are good enough, it'll be alright man.
There really aren't that many options. Alcohol wipes are good if you really get a lot of gunk on it.
>>
>>1010973
Tiger Woods actually got surgery to make his eyes be extra good.
>>
>>1010949
Yay are we just throwing around anecdotal evidence? I know at least 5 people who have had laser and it's been great for the,
>>
>>1011242
> I know at least 5 people who have had laser and it's been great for them
Your evidence is more anecdotal.
I've researched quite a bit and I've seen plenty of reports of shit going wrong. Or maybe less severe things like dry eyes, and etc.
I wouldn't risk my vision at all, even if it's a 1% chance of something going wrong.
>>
my glasses
no
>>
Here are some facts on Lasik
-the lasers used remove 39 millionths of an inch at each time, this is amazingly precise
-less than 1% of people with Lasik have complications
-these complications can almost always be resolved with a second surgery
-almost none of these complications result in loss of eyesight, which is coorelated almost exclusively to the extremely elderly
-people with lasik are less likely to get eye infections than contact lenses
>>
>>1011064
secondinng the microfiber.

i keep one with me pretty much all the time. have not tried the alcohol wipes yet but will give them a shot.
anyone else rock the sun glasses over your normal glasses? i know its goonish but fuck does it work wonders.
>>
>>1011651
I wish man, but it's uncomfortable as fuck. I have never been able to wear sunglasses, although I've wanted to.
Maybe they make prescription sunglasses?
>>
>>1011653
they do make perception sunglasses but the price is too steep to fix someething thats not really a problem

get like a holbrook or wayfair style sunglasses and you should be able to fit them somewhat comfortably over your normal frames
>>
>>1011660
They do make glasses that transition to a darker color when you're in the sun. Pretty cool, but they're not as dark as actual sunglasses.

Same thing happened to me. It happened slowly, but at some point I realized I had to get glasses. Then, after getting prescription glasses it went even worse, and that was fast, like in a month. I wasn't able to drive even with the glasses on.

At that point I stopped wearing glasses and started searching internet for help. Found studies about asians going blind for all reading, ended up buying regular reading glasses with +0.5 strenght and wore them indoors every day. It worked, although it took months.

Getting my eyesight back was great, but looking back it would be great if it was common knowledge that even people with a normal eyesight benefit from reading glasses.

Now 5+ years later I can go for weeks without glasses. I only need them for computer work and reading books, doing those things without glasses gives me headaches.
>>
Contacts. Just bring a little thing of solution. I bring glasses for backup
>>
>>1011670
This.
>>
>>1011731
>Contacts
>/out/
You must be kidding.
>>
>>1012479
They're really quite fine. You just need a way to wash and rinse your hands and some eye drops and spares. All of this could fit in an eye glass case.
>>
Getting PRK in 2 weeks. Can't wait to be done with glasses
>>
>be in Bahamas
>halfway through 2 week "biology of the Bahamas" course
>pretty much vacation full of snorkeling diving and spelunking with a 20 page paper due a month later
>visiting small island overrun by iguanas because no natural land predators have gotten to it
>boat arrives but it's too rocky to dock anywhere, captain tells us to jump out and swim for it
>do so, forgetting about glasses
>they come off as I hit the water, I don't realize until I get to shore
>freak out and start blindly diving around looking for them
>give up after 10 minutes
>wander around island seeing brown spots that are probably iguanas and thinking about what the fuck I'm going to do for the next week, probably have to bring my prescription snorkel mask with me everywhere
>Half hour later go to meet the boat
>classmates ask about my glasses I told them I gave up looking
>30 seconds later a classmate finds them
>a pair of glasses floating around the ocean for 30min

It was a close fucking call, and I learned nothing, still don't remember to bring spares when I travel
>>
>>1011653
>>1011660
When it go /out/ I usually have two pairs of glasses and a pair of prescription sunglasses, you can get glasses pretty cheap at http://www.zennioptical.com/

On that site you can make any frame into sunglasses with several different tinting options, even with my terrible eyes and my extra thick lenses it only cost about $70 for glasses and shipping
>>
>>1010931
I did and got ten years out of it. Unfortunately right eye has deteriorated so now need glasses again.

Tbh when I'm inna I often don't bother with them.
>>
>>1011660
>>1011661
>>1011653
There's always these clip-on sunglasses you can buy
>>
I use soft one-day contact lenses for outdoor stuff.

That way i don´t have to worry much about losing anything, i don´t have to clean them and they are easy and safe to put in and out. That being said, i have never lost one, even swimming and diving is no problem.
>>
>>1011661
I got a pair of Ray ban aviators for 150 with vision plan
>>
>>1013123
Mines were like $250 or something.
>>
>>1012937
Jeez that is a darn good deal! How are they so cheap? Usually around here they're expensive as fuck.
How's the quality on them?
If you give them the prescription do they do it for you also?
>>
>>1012941
Talk to a specialist, maybe it can get fixed.
>>
I think it's bullshit that your vision can't improve
it'd be like saying if you can only run a 7 minute mile you'll never run a mile in under 6 minutes
while maybe you'll never run a mile under 4 minutes it may surprise you how far a little effort goes
>>
>>1013220
It can, my optometrist looked at my records for the past ten years and they have steadily gotten better
>>
Lasik in the past decade has gotten ridiculously more reliable
It's in the high 99.something% for success these days - if you're going to a legit place. It'll be a few thousand USD.
You can probably get it done for a lot less but yeah, rate of complications I'm sure goes way up (I've never seen those numbers). Honestly even a 98% chance of success would scare me - I'd rather wear contacts/glasses than have a 1 in 50 chance of fucking my eyes.
>>
>>1013290
Same anon, same. Vision is probably the most important of your senses.
Glasses don't bother me at all.
>>
>>1013220
I have a degraded optic nerve.

Soo unless that is repaired by some magic it's not getting better.
>>
>>1013190
I think they are cheap because they operate out of China or somewhere in the SEA, I can't complain about the quality been ordering off there for the last 4 years probably around 10 pairs and have never had any problems.

Normally it takes about a week to manufacture and about 3 days shipping to me in NJ
>>
>>1013190
And yeah you type in your prescription and your all set, I usually just go to costcos or somewhere cheap and get a $60 eye exam and then order off of zenni, whole thing cost like $130 which is what even the cheap places sell just the frame for.
>>
>>1010929
My second pair is sunglasses with the same optical specs, tucked in my backpack.

If I break my glasses I can use sunglasses, or vice versa. If I break both, I'm being stupid.

For cleaning: alcohol wipes, microfiber cloth.

No Lasik for me. Doc said eyes will deform towards better vision over age, so getting Lasik now means could be worse vision at older age.

Also it's good to have some safety goggles with all kinds of sticks protruding and sand and whatever flying around.
>>
>>1010931
Exactly this, having it done in two months.
>>
>>1010968
>>1010967
It will cost me around 5400 to have LASIK done. This is using a femtolaser and the newer wavefront tech.
>>
>>1013369
I just ordered a Burberry frame for $115, the eye exam was $40, and the lens is probably gonna be like $70.
>>
>>1010973
>My only issue is if shit ever hits the fan we're fucked.
Good. Then we can finally let natural selection take over again and let superior genes flourish.
>>
>>1010967
Has more to do with how bad and in what way your eyes are bad.

If it's just straight myopia (nearsighted), a high-end doc will be like $3500. Astigmatism, even mild astigmatism, automatically doubles it. Severe astigmatism starts at like $10,000.
>>
>>1011017
Buy a good lens cloth, keep it in its bag when not using it.

Go to Sam's Club and buy the giant box of Swarovski lens wipes for like $15, it's literally a decade's worth of optics cleaning.
>>1011045
Get long-wear contacts, leave them in, wear sunglasses over them.
>>
>>1014561
I have straight myopia.
>>
>>1010944
>I hear eyes begin to get worse at a slower rate after age 26

You heard wrong. my vision was pretty much the same until 40's. Late 40's, it's going faster now.
The thing that I really notice a difference in now is stars. I can't see stars nearly as well as I used to.
>>
>>1010931
>>1011043
>>1014520
You people are stupid. Take it from a guy with a degree in optical engineering: the operation may be relatively safe, but the optical quality you will see will not be as good as a well-prescribed pair of glasses or contacts. What it does is fix some of the lower order optical aberrations, but can't fix and actually makes worse the higher order aberrations. Because the magnitude of the higher order aberrations is less than the lower orders, it will seem better in a lot of cases, but things like starbursts at night will be worse. Don't cut corners and just get something that isn't irreversible like a pair of glasses or contacts.
