Planning a thru-hike on the A.T. I've never hung my pack before, but I've seen a lot of people going on about how important it is, otherwise mice, raccoons, and fucking squirrels will chew through my tent.
Does hanging the bag work? I get that it's off the ground, but I also picture pic related, humming the mission impossible theme, sliding down the paracord. Similarly, do I need to hang my whole backpack, or can I get away with just hanging my food stuff sack?
yes, it works. just be sure to hang it far enough from the trunk and branch that they can't jump onto it.
you can just hang your food sack if
>a) nothing else in your backpack smells delicious
>b) local animals haven't been conditioned to know bags have food in them
based off the popularity of the at i imagine animals there have learned to chew through all bags, so i'd hang the whole thing.
you just hang the food. and it's not meant to be long term.

It depends on how sloppy you are with your food
If all the food smells are contained in your food stuff sack, you should be OK
Also, I use an Ursack to store my food. It is made of bulletproof fiber so rodents and bears cannot chew into it

>go camping in bear country with filthy casuals
>set up bear bag 100 yards from camp and 35 feet in the air
>anything with a scent even sweaty clothes
>get ready for bed
>hear a crunch
>this fucking bastard next to me has a candy bar
>what? I wanted a midnight snack bro
>*autistic screeches*
>middle of the night
>hear that bear breathing sound
>put one in the chamber of my semi auto .45
>bear sits on tent smushing the dirty fucking candy bar man
>dont shoot, his lesson is learned
>bear goes about his business
>tent poles and tent ruined
>never camping with casuals ever again

Man, I LIVE in bear country. I believe it. Dopey fuckers will go after anything.
What I saw on the AT was people hanging then 3 ft off the ground. Mice were the bigger problem so maybe just bring your cat and skip the bearfag

Why would you set up your bag so far from camp?
Hanging bags, Ursacks, and even bear cans are delaying tactics only
They delay the bear long enough for you to mobilize and scare the bear off
If you leave your stuff so far away, the bears have all night to worry at it, and they will figure a way into it

Yeah but the point is they're not near ME

And they get your food and you have nothing to eat
You have to be on top of that shit
I put my cookware filled with small stones on top of my tied down Ursack as an alarm in case I can't easily wake up to defend my food
I normally only go out for one night at a time and don't spend more than an hour or two away from camp once I'm setup. That said, I've been stalked hardcore by burrs on a couple occasions and didn't have my food 200m away hoisted innatree. Oh wells.
