Names were drawn and emails sent for the Spring Santa! At least this time most of the anons up north won't have to wait months to use the gifts they receive.

Do it. They're easily my favorite hard baits. I need to get up to the one up here and see if they still have any.

You don't really need a leader I was talking about adding a craw or something to the back of the jig (trailer). Like in the pic.
>>
>>1009137
Yeah the more I think about it the more I want them. Going to finish my beer then head up there then probably hit up the Dan hamburgers for lunch with the wife as we have not been out to eat in about 2 months and it will be a nice treat.
>>

>>
>>1009181
I had the same reaction a few months back.
>>
>>1009179
You should. I don't normally use them, but for big bass they're great.

>>1009181
Kek yeah. Im sure you'd still get some without one, but a trailer looks so much better. You should also trim the skirt a little bit so that when the jig hits the bottom the skirt flairs out.

Ive only caught a handful of fish on full size jigs, but every fish I have caught has been 3+ lbs. Theyre a lot better for quality fish than pure numbers imo.

Hey guys I'd like to get into fishing but I know next to nothing. I read the stuff in the pastebin and I found this rod, its on sale and it seems to meet the requirements mentioned in the "Starter Tips For Brand New Anglers" post, is it any good for a first time rod or should I be looking at something a bit more expensive?

>>
>>1009190
Yeah some catfish anon from TX but idk what happened to him. I've never used that one, but I always tell people to go with sticky shit like that. The dip bait or punch bait always works way better than the dough balls.

>>1009179

>>

I don't know if it was me, but I use it whenever I feel like catfishing and it works pretty good.
>>
Is it possible to fish for trout with a baitcaster?
>>
>>1009209
Sure. But I think good baitcasters that will cast light baits like that are normally pretty expensive.
>>
>>1009193

Both but probably mostly fresh water, I live in the lower mainland of BC and there is a small Lake near me that I thought I'd start at. I have no idea about the actual fish.

Jig fishing one of a best bass baits. I like my trailers to go just a bit past the skirt. Using s big trailer has reduced hook up ratio in my opinion.

Rule one: you can never have enough black and blue
>>
>>1009232
Mmmm that is hot.
>>
>>1009233
Black and blue never produce as much as more natural clors where I love. Olive green and orange jigs are the best. But at Lewis smith lake idk what it is but yellow hair jigs rain supreme.

Could I use one of these faggots as bait?
>>
>>1009229
Glad you like it, I've caught a lot of fish on most of this stuff so you might get lucky and snag into a trout or two. There should be another box coming sometime today or tomorrow with a few more things in it, not sure why they sent it separate but be on the lookout.

>>1009233
I really want to try out jigs for bass, they're almost all I use in saltwater but they don't have the weird skirt thingy. I've tried a crawl fish on a normal jig head a few times but haven't ever caught anything. Are they pretty snag free with the skirts? Most of the lakes I fish have a lot of branches and weeds so I haven't been able to use my favorite lure type :(
>>
>>1009224
He ded. RIPIP.

>>1009229
Damn already? That's what's up. You had the anon who never responded to me and I was worried so now I'm stoked. I think everybody should have stuff in the mail.
>>
>>1009244
They all have different styles of weed guards on them. Some have a little piece of wire that hangs over the hooks to deflect debris. Almost common it seems is the same thing but instead of a piece of wire it's a thick cluster of plastic bristles. There are few other types but they all work about the same. I usually don't have much problems with snags. breaking one off on a hard hookset isn't that uncommon for me though
>>

>>
>>1009266
You're telling me that salamanders, newts, skanks, and lizards aren't all exactly the same thing?

>>1009269
I usually use a swim bait hook or a jighead but a weedless Texas rig is what the majority of people use. Twitch it across the tops of grass while occasionally letting it fall to the bottom and you'll kill somethin
>>
>>1009276
Technically yes. All those "lizards" are different. Some are "reptiles" while others are true amphibian vertebrates.
>>
>>1009276
ok, is texas rigs strictly for boating?
I have never, ever ever caught a fish on a weedless rig, not any of those frog lures with the sunk in hooks, or any variety of weedless rig, while shore fishing
>>
>>1009080
Fuck guys it's hot in AZ now. I'm going to be ramping up some of my night fishing tackle now. I got the standard dark colored bigbsingle Colorado blade spinner bait and dark colored lip less cranks. What else should I get? A jitterbug? I have a black and white bone spook and black and white bone whopper plopper.
>>
>>1009233
what sort of action do I use?
Just a slow trawl and let it drag across the bottom, or jerk it up and less it fall?
do I need 2 weights so it rests flat on the bottom?
>>
>>1009276
Cool. I didn't know if it was best to do that or put it on a jog head and bounce it off the bottom.

>>1009283
Nah man. Most of my fish are caught using T rigs. And I've caught quite a few on frogs also.
>>
>>1009276
Salamanders and Newts are amphibians I think, so more of water animals and would probably be more of a natural meal for the fish. But around here, I wouldn't put it past any predator fish to go after some anole, gecko, or skink that drops off a tree branch and falls into the water.

>>1009283
I fish Texas rigs from shore all the time. When I lived in IL, I was always fishing with Mepps and Rapalas and thought July and August were basically impossible to fish in. And then I moved to Florida where the water temps are like Aug in IL for 9 months out of the year and wasn't getting shit on the Rapalas from April to November. Then I started using the Texas rigs and it's totally different since they run deep and slow.
>>
>>1009289
ah well then it's clearly a matter of locations then because Meeps/cranks/rapalas are my premier lures fishing in Ohio so far, soft plastics just don't seem to do much for whatever reason
>>
>>1009121

pls no step on snek
>>
>>1009292
Do they still work for you in late July and August? In Northern IL, they didn't do much for me when the water got too warm.

What you mean by two weights? Only weight there should be is the weight molded to the hook where you tie your line on. As for how to work it, there isn't any one way that's better than the other. Both the ways you described work at different times and places. Just try different stuff and when you feel bites remember what you were doing and repeat that. Just keep it near the bottom and work it slow
>>
is it even worth going out today?

The ones leaving the state are disproportionally higher income and higher tax paying people.

But I just hate that boring city and it's like high school all over again because the same cunts from HS who were in the cool cliques all went to Big 10 schools. My graduating class in HS was around 250 people, and probably like 50 of them ended up at UIUC.

Water temp changes a lot slower than air temps. So if it has been 80F and sunny for a month, the water might be like 70F and one or two days of 40F weather will only bring the water temp down a little bit in a larger lake. Small ponds will change temps faster.

what braid to braid knot would you guys recommend?
>>

I just do uni-uni but somebody will say FG or Albright.

Just make sure you do that shit far down on the spool because I have a feeling that you will regret trying to cast a knot out of the memecaster. Even with spinning reels, if I have like 100yds and I want to add another 20-30yds, I will take the old line off and put the 20yds of new line on the spool first and then add the old line back on top so there's a very small chance I will ever even get to the knot.

If you are using regular spinnerbaits with a skirt like pic related, you can run a trailer if you want but most of the time people don't. Maybe 10% of the time I will put a Gulp minnow on when I'm using a regular spinnerbait just to give it some flavor and a bit more action.

But they do sell spinners without skirts. I have some larger bass ones that are just like a regular spinnerbait with 2 blades but no skirt so those work well with a soft plastic on them. And then Beetle Spins like pic related, you want to run a grub or something on the jighead.

People here like to run trailers on their chatterbaits too, but I honestly have had better luck with no trailer. A lot of the time putting the soft plastics will change their action and the fish don't like it as much.

Unless you pulled it out of ridiculously deep water to the point it's got the bends, or you squeezed the shit out of it, chances are that it's fine. And if it isnt, then there's really nothing you could have done.

My first reaction is to assume you're exaggerating a bit and the fish was just spawning.
>>
>>1009879
I camped out and had the line in the water all night. The spool was totally empty when I walked up to the rod so I pretty much horsed him all the way across the lake. He was at least a 10 pounder. He was wrapped up in the braid all night so I think that might have squeezed its ass out. Felt bad for the guy, cut the line off as well as I could and then let him go. A bass will probably try to eat his asshole now.

Anyway it was my first catfish ever after reading how to catch them online. My hype levels were through the roof considering I've never caught anything bigger than a 3lb bass. Had a bluegill head on a slip rig with a circle hook. Anyway I'll post a picture when my friend sends it to me because this things ass was fucked up.

>>1009891
the outflows of river dams tend to be good fishing areas. I wouldnt say its better than lakes but in certain areas it could be. it also depends on what you want to catch.
>>
>>1009913
Did you catch them lobster seeds or steal that pic?
>>
>>1009891
Kind of right. If you know where to target the fish in the lake you can clean house real quick if not you might be lucky to get one. The dam is like a What-a-burger for fish, lots of cheap good food, so that is a place to target fish.

Now the problems with dams, besides what others have said about snags, is that everybody goes to fish them. Fish are dumb but like dogs the can still learn so a fish that has been caught at a danm is probably going to be more cautious. The fish that are there will grow fat and fast off all the food but they will also get picked off by all the other fishermen. If you go at the wrong time there might not be a spot open to fish.

So if you do not have a boat to get to an awesome open spot or do not know a good place to fish on the lake then the dam is better. If you know your lake and can get to the best spots the lake is better.

Lol I never said that. They are fine if you are going to buy a MH and go for catfish and carp. But if you want to try lures at all... or just feel what is on the end of your line, go with a Lightning Rod.
>>
>>1009968
>>1009971
I'm just messing with him.

Sensitive rod does matter if you use lures though. It's important to be able to keep contact with the lure in the strong wave/current of the surf and be able to differentiate between the surf and real fish bite. Some surf species are really subtle on their bite in the surf, especially the ones that dig in sand for food. They would dig in, and quickly sort out stuff that aren't food and spit them out fairly quickly. Fishes when they are lazy have pretty lazy hit as well. Flounders are famous for this

I used to think garlic was a meme but now that I'm getting into the reefing hobby I found out that some people use it to get delicate finicky species of fish to eat. I thought garlic was only good for masking scents from lures that leech paint but fish might actually like the "taste" of it. Not sure if this applies to other scents and I'm pretty sure there's controversy between anecdotal and hard evidence but I don't feel like getting into it right now.

>>1010155
Look up a bullet weights. Put your line through it and then rig Texas style. It helps cast past the weedline or can help break through the scum that'll build up over the shallows while keeping your rig weedless
>>
>>1010214
Depends on what it is. For moving baits I usually just keep them swimming at first then stop them if it keep happening. For stuff on the bottom I always just let it sit if I feel a bite.

>>1010218
Pls no bully skid
>>
>>1010214
Depends on what fish I'm getting harassed by/targeting. If it's Pike then I just let it sit dead for a while. They'll usually attack again without hesitation. Bass I quickly reel it away a few feet then let my bait sink/float up for a while. The bass will usually re-attack on the sink/float or they won't bite again ever lol.

Bass are more finicky then anything else I regularly fish for desu

depends on the type of fish and lure youre using. baitfish when attacked usually dont slow down.
doe often when im fising a soft swimbait for halibut you get that tap you definitely want to slack up so i know what youre saying. faster fish like to chase baitfish down thats when i find it better to burn skipbaits and stickbaits more like fleeing baitfish.

depends on the lure i guess.
>>
>>1010214
I try to mimic the actions of the bait I am trying to reproduce. So with a worm or lizard I let it drop where it is and give it some short twitching. For bait fish a fast frantic zig zag for a few feet. I want the fishes instincts to kick in.

I got a coupon for $5 off a 150 yard spook of Suffix 832, my panfish pole could use some new line. Should I go with 20 pound braid (6lb mono equiv.)? I feel like it would make it a more well rounded setup that would make my 5' two piece rod into the perfect all around car rod. It's small enough for panfish, but strong enough to reel in larger fish. The reel is a Mitchell Avocet II g2000 that holds 175 yards of 6 pound line. Should I wrap electrical tape around the spool, or can I use the (I think) 8 pound mono on it for the backing?
>>
>>1010240
This is why I hate running anything larger than a Size 10. Even with two hooks it's really easy to get them in the eye or the belly or gill. I hate having to rip that shit out when I'm doing C&R.
>>
>>1010162

Where at?
>>
>>1010294
Do 10 or 15. 20 is gonna suck for throwing the really light stuff
>>
>>1010294
20lb braid might be the equivalent diameter of 6lb mono, but it doesn't cast the same as 6lb mono. Mono is smoother than braid so it casts slightly better for the same diameter. I would say 20lb braid feels closer to 8lb or 10lb mono. 15lb is still really strong and feels like 6lb.
>>
>>1010294
>Panfish pole
You answered it right there, lightest line possible. 6lb test is all you need
>>
>>1010294
>>1010384
Reading more too, I think 10lb braid is the way to go for that. If you don't think that spool will fill it with the smaller diameter, do 20-30yds of mono backing, uni-uni knot, and fill the rest with braid. 10lb braid normally cast slightly better than 6lb mono and works well for 1/8oz lures and can still toss 1/16oz stuff.
>>
Heading out to my new favorite tank. Last time I caught my personal best channel cat. 28 inches and a little over 10lbs.
>>
>>1010402
Have you tired Suffix 833? It's super soft. I use 15lb and I like it a lot more than 8lb power pro I use to run. And there's such a little difference diameter wise from 10lb to 15lb might as well go heavier.

Yeah throwing an x rap or hopping a white fluke of a river shore is so hard to do to get some walleye.

It's even harder when you troll with lead core line and spot fish with down scan and side scan.

>>
>>1010491

Gar are best taken with live/cut bait either fished off the bottom or just near the surface. They're very curious and will investigate surface splashing and mouth objects, but not eat them.

Their mouths are all boney so a hook won't penetrate anywhere except the soft back of the mouth or the hinges between their jaws and they are very lazy feeders. They'll swim around with a prey item (or bait) for minutes before properly eating it. This makes for a lot of missed hooksets.

I use size 2 or smaller hooks and make sure they swallow it. Since this makes catch and release impractical and I only eat gar occasionally, I don't do it often
>>
>>1010514

I don't even target bass, but for most folks on the south, it is just bass and catfish...and bluegill. SOME folks have access to crappie and white bass/hybrids. Even fewer can fish for stripers. And in the winter, they stock farm raised rainbow trout.

No wild trout. No muskie or pike. No walleye or yellow perch. No salmon. No smallmouth.

Also part of why saltwater is so big in the south.

I would recommend a light action rod, I have a shakespeare micro series 7ft light action spinning rod that I catch trout and bass on. It handles 2lb bass just fine though it wouldn't be suitable for frogging in weeds, and lures over 1/4 oz will be awkward to use. But a rod with those specs will cover the trout/bass range the best of any rod in my opinion. Better to have to fight large fish a bit extra than to feel like you have too much rod. All my favorite fishing moments have been when I hook into something that pushes my equipment and skills beyond the norm.
