My dude!
>>
So I'm about to buy my first blanket for going innawoods. Normally I camp with a tarp or just under the stars with nothing else. For now I've just been using a sleeping bag, but want to give blankets a try, they seem comfier.

So, my question is, wool or fleece? And why?

Light, warm, packable.
>>
>>1004659
>>1004662
How well do these things contain the feathers?
I have a similar feather quilt I normally use on my bed during the winter, and while it's really light and warm, it doesn't do a very good job at keeping all the feathers inside.

Also, if you had to choose blanket or fleece only, which would you go for? I think these bird feather blankets are a bit over the top, where I usually camp it doesn't get so cold that they would be necessary, I believe
>>
>>1004673
they sell really good down (bird feather) sleeping bags and outdoor blankets that are amazing but they're very expensive and you really can't wash them.

this depends on your budget and how cold it gets. i'm a big fan of fleece because it's affordable and extremely comfy. just don't put it in the clothes dryer! wash it with cold water and let it hang to dry. wool is a lot more expensive and less comfy, but it's warmer. i guess overall i would say fleece, but not cheap fleece, even expensive fleece is cheaper than wool and it's super cozy
>>
>>1004679
I'm broke, so my budget is small, guess that rules out the down.

I think I might go with fleece. I live in northern Spain, and temps drop as low as -5C in the winter, but the remaining of the year are between 5-15C, so a decent, thick fleece blanket should suffice to camp under the stars.
>>
>>1004680
yeah fleece is a winner. it doesn't block wind much though
>>
>>1004682
How's wool in terms of wind blockage?
>>
>>1004682
>>1004683
Get two thinner blankets? One wool one fleece?

>>1004680
What is your budget? There are some really good synthetic sleeping bags/quilts around.
>>
>>1004683
>>1004684
I would actually say get a thick nice fleecie and a thin woolie (sleep with the cheap wool on the outside).

also he's from Spain anon, he doesn't have any money

Thanks for your advice, anons. I think I'll go with a nice, good quality fleece and a meh-tier wool blanket and do the suggested combo. Sounds comfy anyway.

And as for budget, right now I only have 50€ to spare, since I just bought some much needed new boots, and that pretty much blew up all the "spendable" money I had.
>>
>>1004791
Also don't forget that what you sleep _on_ is as, if not more, important than what you sleep _in_.
>Get a gud mat!
>>
>>1004812
That's something I've never considered. Been going /out/ for some years now and always slept either on the bare floor, or inside a sleeping bag on the floor with no mat or anything.

Does it make a difference? How?
And how do I into decent, not-kidney-selling-expensive mats?

The thermarest Z lite is a decent mat, not too expensive, light, comfy, and personally I find the whole folding rather than rolling design easier to work with.
>Does it make a difference? How?
The ground will get cold fast once the sun goes down and then it just acting like a big heat magnet, one that you are directly in contact with. If you want to know more than read about R-values.
>>
>>1004831
>The ground will get cold fast once the sun goes down and then it just acting like a big heat magnet
Fair enough, although I personally have never had this issue before (my body temperature seems to be always a bit higher than average, not sure if that has anything to do with it).

Could you not just make some sort of bedding with foliage, moss or something?
>>
>>1004841
Yeah that all works. Sounds like you are a warm sleeper which is cool. I am a cold sleeper, which is odd as I give off a lot of heat when I am sleeping, but I feel cold! I have always carried a mat as few of the places I camp have enough dry, natural matter to make a decent sleeping surface.
>>
>>1004762
Ultralighter detected, what are you too scared to carry a little bit of gear?
>>
>>1004844
I must be yeah, even in the winter I just sleep in the nude under a thin blanket or something. Not that it gets too cold here, rarely drops beneath 3-5C, but still. Anyway, thanks a lot for the advice, my man.

My beaver fur blanket is by far the warmest thing anybody could suggest. Since you are a yuropoor and can't just make one from locally sourced pelts like me, a pure wool Hundson's Bay Co knockoff is my suggestion. There are a couple of companys that made blankets of on par quality into the 1970s. I have a Trapper Point 100% Shetland virgin wool blanket on my bed right now (sent my beaver blankie back up north because it was too warm). I got a good deal on it for $60 on ebay. It is going to last me the rest of my life, which I am really happy about.

Either up in the North, for outings which aren't long trips I go to Manzanares, close to madrid. Also do some water sports down south in Andalucia, lots of that when I lived there, but thats more traditional outdoors not /out/ if you know what I mean.

Pues si encuentras una Pendleton barata, postea por aquí. La más barata que he visto fue en una tienda de segunda mano en Canadá por 200$, que sigue siendo una salvajada por una manta

>>1005056
We have quite a few places, particularly up north but other areas have some cool shit as well. Are you visiting soon?

>>1005111
Woodland and good places, definitely, but you have to be super stealthy because wild camping is illegal here. Also, please don't start any fires, as we speak a huge chunk of our decent woodlands is in flames already. I'd recommend anywhere between the Pyrenees to the east and Galicia to the west, the whole of the north is beautiful for /out/. Some places a bit further south like Avila, Soria or Cuenca would be worth considering as well.
>>
>>1004970
>Since you are a yuropoor and can't just make one from locally sourced pelts like me
I mean, I could always buy merino wool from some local shepherds and make it myself. Merino sheep have excellent quality wool and is really warm and comfy. Never had any from Hudson's or Trapper Point, so I can't compare, but it's still pretty decent wool.
>>
>>1004841
as long as you submit to the mechanics of heat sure, but dont underestimate its importance. it looks like an inside joke to see ultralight people carrying these massive mats, but truthfully they are the difference between tormented sleep and rest
>>
Every night I jack off 50 times so that I can cover my body with a thick insulating layer of my own semen.
>>
>>1005364
Point taken, I'll see if I can score a decent second hand mat somewhere, seeing as I'm broke atm and probably can't afford a new one.
>>
>>1005372
i dont own one but i have yoga mats that would work. your inquiry involving 'would my knowledge/imagination be a valid replacement' is true. people sleep on cardboard, that slight corrugation alone would make a large difference. granted cardboard absorbs water
>>
>>1005375
I have a few friends into yoga, they might have some spare mats to use then. How are they in terms of carrying? I know they're not too heavy, nor am I an ultralight camper, but how would you go about tying it and carrying on your pack?
>>
>>1005111

B-but wild camping isn't legal in England. Apart from the two Moors.

>>1005514
Yeah wild camping in Scotland is legal.
>>1005516
It isn't legal iirc but if you do it right no one will report you. A lot of people do wild camp responsibly so no one really enforces the law.

Not camping, but pitching your tent anywhere, Mainly because, especially in the UK, everywhere is owned by someone. However, the reality is that no one is going to give a shit. Unless you stay there for a week and throw rubbish all the place will having multiple bonfires.

When I was a kid my grandpa gave me an old down army sleeping bag that was super heavy. It was the most comfortable thing ever. Weighted blankets are where it's at, but I'm sure they're not too fun in the summer. Winter + weighted blanket = the pinnacle of comfy.

If you're counting that, then Italy should be blue as well.
You can't camp, BUT you can bivouac in all the National Parks, which is understood to mean making a small camp, setting up a tent in the evening, and packing it away in the morning.
You can only make a long-term camp in designated areas tho.
