That car absolutely obliterated the reputation of "American cars" to Japanese guys. That's why Ford, Chevy, and Dodge are still struggling to sell their shitbox in the Japan. For example, Ford, after trying to compete with the likes of the Focus and Fiesta, finally quit Japan last year.

Meanwhile, VW, Audi, BMW and other European premium brands have had a very successful export program to Japan for decades.

That doesn't really make any sense considering how well Jeep sells there. the Focus and Fiesta are European cars as well and any Focus/Fiesta models are exports directly from Europe. the novelty of BMW/Audi is the badge so whatever flaws they have will always be forgiven like with the Chinese and Buick/Cadillac. people can say Dodge is garbage and that they wouldn't be caught dead in it but then drive off in a Maserati using dodge parts.
