What's the process for buying an older used car from those small local dealerships? I've never bought from one of those places, I'm not good with a wrench so I'd want to have a 3rd party mechanic check it out, and it's priced a little higher than I think it's worth. How do I go about getting it checked out and talking the price down while also avoiding all the cheap dealership tricks?
>>
>>17875015
Just go on Craigslist. That's where they get half their lot from and they mark up the price by double or even more
>>
Reposting from last thread.

Civic Hatchback Sport or Mazda 3 hatch for my next car? Either will have a manual and the Mazda would be the 2.5.

I like the 1.5 turbo in the Civic for fuel efficiency and low-end torque but prefer the infotainment system in the Mazda and think it's a little more comfy. It's a close thing but I think I preferred the ride on the Mazda, too.

The Mazda comes with a lot of features like the torque vectoring and automatic emergency braking that I'm concerned with holding up long term, though. Similarly, I've never owned a turbo car and am a little concerned with the 1.5l in the Civic being a bit of an unproved engine.
>>
>>17875038
You're buying brand new? If so, then neither
>>
>>17875044
Why do you say that?
>>
>>17875038
If you think you'll want to do performance modifications for the car then don't get a Mazda 3. Mazda sucked as much power as they could out of the engine so you won't be getting much of anything until a year or so when turbo kits are released.

If you don't care about getting more torque or hp then the Mazda 3 is a really nice car. As a daily driver it's comfy and it handles well when you're doing a little spirited driving if you put a little bit of money into it(rsb, tires, etc). I've never driven a Civic but I've spent a lot of money on my Mazda 3 and know the ins and outs of it so ask away if you have any questions.
>>
>>17875064
Yeah I won't be modding too much. I just want something fun for a DD. I know I like both cars, I'm just concerned about some things with both.

How has the 3 held up for you? Is it pretty reliable? Is there anything that's known to fail on them?

Is the 718 Cayman/Boxster the best car under 100k? I mean at first I was really bothered by it losing 2 cylinders but now that I know it actually makes more power and torque with that 4boxer than the 6 it had, I kind of want it. And this is coming from a person who pretty much was about to get a Corvette GrandSport. The Grandsport is really too flashy and I simply chose to ignore the Cayman because it became a 4cyl. Now I kind of like it and I'm considering to spec one. Thinking it a bit more, I'll get less looks from a 718 than a GS so I think I'm a lot more leaned towards the 718.

What do you think? 718 or GS for daily? I currently daily drive a 2015 Lexus GS350 FS as my daily and earns 120k a year and lives a minimalist life.

>inb4 get a V8
Sorry boyo insurance is a cunt and doesnt like fun also I have personal reasons as to why I have a V6 over a V8
>>
>>17875093
Also I know that it's kind of a no-go because who'd actually buy a 4cyl for nearly 80k but look at the power it makes. Isn't that what matters? An it gives around 3 mpg more from the old model.
>>
>>17875093
If you earn 120k a year why are you asking us? You obviously have your shit together. Why do you need to be spoonfed?
>>
>>17875084
I've had my '14 M3 for a little over a year now and nothing has fallen apart. I replaced my tires as soon as I bought the car as well as most of the suspension system. Since then I've replaced my brakes because of wear(I DD this car and take it to the track) but aside from that the car is a ton of fun.

As far as "parts known to fail": nothing comes to mind aside from things every car will need replaced, i.e. tires and battery etc.

I've heard certain AWD cars like the skyline have a relay that you can yank out and functionally become RWD
People even build switches that can achieve this on the go, effectively a RS drift mode
is there any other awd cars that can to the same?

718, if you want to be less seen because I guess that's what you want. CGS if you want to be sterotyped as a mid-life crisis man(if you are over 40s), wake up your pissy neighbours off and shitty Corvette loving faggots waving and asking questions about your car when they could actually google those. You already have it figured out, which is the 718. Good luck m8.

By the way, I actually don't mind giving 70k+ for a sensible car even though what engine it possess.

Hi, I'm OP here. I just have a few things to say.

>Also go through the thread and look for questions to which you could answer to.
Is this sentence grammatically correct? If not, please reply with a sentence which you think is grammatically correct.

Also, I'm not trying to take over the QTDDTOT business but I'm trying to make the appearance of the threads more clean and nice because I have seen many QTDDTOT threads just start of like below and make a whole lot of mess.
>Hi, why is my transmission not working? Should I do the fixing alone or leave it to the mechanics. And yeah, QTDDTOT
Which seems very lazy of the poster.

Also, you can totally give me suggestions on what to add or correct in the OP. Like any references to auto-help websites, choose a picture for the thread, etc.

Have a good day, people.

This is an auto question but also a financial and mindset sort of question.

What would you guys choose from a loaded B5.5 Passat and basic B6 Passat?
For the money required for a base, 2006 B6 Passat with the 1.6 petrol engine 102 bhp I can get a Highline B5.5 Passat from 2004 with the 2.0 petrol 130 bhp engine, and the Passat B5.5 would still be 500-1000 euros cheaper.

Thing is I really want a stealth wealth car and the Phaeton is too much for me at this moment and the Passat is a fairly anonymous car.

Bonus points for the Passat being hugely popular in Eastern Europe so you can find just about any part or trim you want, either new or second hand, so you can easily rack up on options that can be added after.

Pic related : This is what the fully loaded Passat B5.5 interior looks like.

So, fully loaded B5.5 Passat or basic B6 Passat ?

>>
>>17878690

Buy a Haynes manual, and start cruising some vehicle-specific forums. Usually they're a hotbed of faggotry but there's always some technical experts hiding among them.

Googling "[car make and year] common problems" usually works too. Try using it with other stuff like "transmission problem" and "electrical problem". Usually those will link to threads in forums where they're discussing common issues.

>>
So I hit a guys side view mirror and he has to get the entire assembly replaced. His mechanic is quoting him like 650 USD for it installed. I'm gonna see the actual quote tomorrow, it's some kind of GMC truck not sure specifically what at the moment. But does that seem ridiculously overpriced? I'm assuming he's getting a oem part but that still seems really fucking overpriced.
Thought I'd see what you guys think.

I think I got caught doing 60 in a 45 (I'm only scared cuz I live in VA and they'd actually ticket you for this) by something that looked like a speeding camera but I have no idea. How long until I can stop holding my breath every time I bring in the mail and I'm sure they won't ticket me?

The scissor jack for my car broke, and I don't particularly care for carrying my floor jack around with me.
Replacing the jack with an identical one seems expensive, but it would still fit in the trunk kit. Should I go for it or just get a bottle jack?
>>
>>17879019
Why not call a junk yard or two and see if they can hook you up with an exact replacement?

When mine shit the bed I figured I'd rather have a beefier one anyway so I just got something off amazon. It wound up being a little to big to fit in the same compartment, but there was room to stick it inside the donut spare so just moved the straps I usually kept in the spare to the jack compartment.
>>
>>17878946
I haven't looked in to airbag tech in many a year. IIRC on my old car it was as simple as sticking a resistor in the plug. You'd probably be better using a search engine for your particular model and/or a brand-specific car forum.
>>
>>17878990
That does seem expensive, but when I broke my side view mirror and tried to source an OEM replacement I was surprised that the only option was to order some whole ridiculous assembly that cost way more than I was up for paying. And I would have had to take apart way more of the door than I wanted to bother with.

$650 seems like an awful lot, but if it's motorized / electric defogging / has a turn light, and then the mechanic is going to have to take half the door apart to replace everything then that could be legit.
>>
>>17879019
>he doesn't know you can get them from any junkyard

some are just left in the cars
>mfw every PNP I've been to is littered with tire irons and spare tire jacks

This, keep in mind they're maybe no way to defeat it at all, aside from pulling the dash warning light.

>>17879058

I'm in Ontario and I want to go and buy this guys car 4 hours away. Its not safetied or etested, how do I get it home without a truck and trailer? On the Govt website it says it needs to be safetied and etested, have insurance, and fill out a specific form, then bring to a Service Ontario and apply for a temp plate. Is this all correct? Seems impossible for so many people selling cars that are unfit or unsaftied. Even if I bought a car in town that wasn't saftied or etested I don't know how I would legally drive it home.

Any help from an /O/ntarian would be appreciated. Current option is banking on this guy to safety and etest the car, then get a friend to drive me up then I drive the car back.
>>

Hey guys. I'm looking at a first car that needs some work. It's a Vt commodore. It needs:
>Engine mounts
>Caster bushes
>Steering rack boots
>Inlet manifold gaskets
>Tyres

To all be replaced. I suspect brake pads as well, but that's easy. I'm a relative noob when it comes to auto repairs, but I have done minor stuff with motorbikes before, so it's not like I've never touched a ratchet.

I want to learn to work on cars, and this is a way I'm considering to get into that. I'm also hoping to come out of this with a working first car as well as some new skills.

Anything on this list impossible for a relative beginner?

I've done some googling, and it all seems doable, but I'm worried it's deceptively simple and I'm going to end up having to spend $300 to have a mechanic do it.

Engine is a v6 by the way, so inlet manifold gaskets aren't gonna be as hard as a v8.

I'm not from Ontario, but one option would be to call your equivalent of the DMV or your insurance company. If you do that you'll probably have to cockblock yourself into playing by the rules. If you know a guy a the local shop and maybe want to have him check it out when you get it home or something, maybe he could help you out.

4 hours is a lot. In the US, I've never lived somewhere I felt uncomfortable doing a short distance without plates, or just borrowing a plate from myself or somebody else and not getting caught. 4 hours though I don't think I'd do that on the sketch.
>>
>>17880270
you're looking at more than $300 for a mechanic to do that. You're also in over your head. I would suggest getting a running daily and then think about that project car. Those problems will lead to more, ultimately blowing your budget and leaving you with shit.

But if you're half way motivated, have access through a shop or a friend for parts at cost, you might as well just do it. Assuming you have the tools to do so.

Can you post a link to the CL ad?
>>
>>17880270
Engine mounts could be an issue depending on model. I have tools and I've touched a ratchet and I had no problem swapping my mounts, but I don't think I'd recommend that to a noob. But maybe you could let it go until you work your way up?

Caster bushes sounds like that might be a bit of a cunt. Again depends on the car.

Tires obviously you take that to a garage because it's an absolute bitch to try to do yourself.

The rest sounds like stuff where I'd have a look and try taking things apart until I no longer felt comfortable. But on the whole that list is beyond what I'd suggest a noob try to undertake unless he were intuitively good with his hands, had a good instruction manual, had a way to buy tools and parts, and didn't mind if it took more than a weekend to sort out.
>>
>>17880293
Yeah I called both. Insurance company doesn't offer any temp insurance just incase I get there and the deal doesn't go through or something like that. So I end up paying $170 for nothing if it doesn't go through.

I called my equivalent of the DMV and they said no temp plate unless it passes a safety inspection and an emissions test with proof of insurance. So it's kind of fucked.

A lot of guys I message won't even take it for a safety check quoting they're "too busy". Kind of just throws you off from wanting to buy another car.
>>
>>17880313
>too busy
Not a good sign. I don't know how your system works but if the guy you're buying it from is willing to take care of the details and take picture proof or whatever, then maybe that would work?

Otherwise I mean 4hrs to tow a car? That has to cost all kinds of money. Is he interested in making a sale?
>>
>>17880270
>bushes
is this Australian for bushings?
anyway all these seem easy tier except for mounting tires on wheels, which is pretty cheap for a tire shop to do,
and you'll need to visit them for an alignment after the caster bushings are replaced
Taking wheels on and off the vehicle is easy
>>
>>17880321
He seems very interested. He is actually willing to book the etest and safety, but I'm more asking outside of this situation specifically how people handle sellers that don't provide the necessary documentation. Ontario sucks man, lol.

There was a '99 Prelude for sale, body was mint, engine had 320k km on it though. Was going to pick it up but he wouldn't take it for a safety or an etest. Very frustrating. Especially when I had cash on hand ready to buy. Wish it was like some states so I could just go pick it up and drive it home.
>>
>>17880339
Well, I don't know about your situation, but I don't mind driving 4hrs. So I would tell him I'd come buy it cash in hand if he takes care of the tests and it isn't a piece of crap when I get to see it in person.

Might offer to split the cost or pay for the tests as a form of putting money down on it, depending on the situation. I generally prefer to try to push a deal through rather than try to save every last half-shekel if it looks good.
>>
>>17880298
Sorry, I meant $300 per job, barring tyres and wheel alignment, which I'd likely just get done professionally. I know that doing that all through a shop would pretty much make the thing so expensive it's not worth buying anymore. I can't post a link to the ad unfortunately; not on CL, and I think it's been taken down. Didn't really have much info though; most of it was gotten from speaking to the guy.

Parts for this specific car are pretty easy to get; there's a few wreckers in my area alone. Barring tyres, of course. Buying the parts off ebay and wreckers would come out to about $200. I have a basic tool set, and my neighbor has an engine crane if that would help with swapping the mounts. I'm mostly concerned that I'm gonna try, fail, and be left with a POS.

>>17880310
It's an Olympic, VT series 2. Unless you're making a general statement, in which case I have no clue. An anon in the aussie general thread thought that VT's were easy to work on, but that isn't the most reliable source. Tyres I'll almost certainly get done professionally; plus of course a wheel alignment. I'd probably do that totally last.

I have around 2 months of uni holidays coming up, in which I'll have shit all to do, so I definitely don't mind throwing time at this. I have a part time job, so I'm not totally unable to buy tools or parts; plus my family has a tonne of tools.

>>17880322
Yep, it definitely is.

And how easy is easy? Is this easy for a person starting out? I'm not pants on head retarded, but I'm also not god's gift to mechnics. I don't wanna be stuck with a box that I can't get running.
>>
>>17880434
>It's an Olympic, VT series 2. Unless you're making a general statement, in which case I have no clue
Me neither. My first car I got a set of wrenches and started going at it even before I got a Haynes manual just because it's like legos for adults and I want to see how it works inside.

But for your list of things to do, I would have downloaded a copy of the factory service manual or similar so that I could make sure I'd go out for a ride to buy the right tools and supplies before getting in to it. Mind you I'm the kind of guy who slaps together some 2x4s and a pair of ratcheting roof straps to use as an engine left to swap out the engine mounts.
>>
>>17880434
Let me give you another anecdote. When you take to doing your own work, sometimes you run in to a real motherfucker. I do not regret learning to do my own work.

One time in the course of taking the intake apart the idle air control valve didn't seem to want to come out. So I grabbed it with a pair of pliers and it shattered. $270 and a week to get a new one delivered to my door. That was dumb.
>>
>>17880434
Now, in the course of figuring my way around working on my own cars, and accumulating tools, my fellow oldbox friends began to ask me to help with this or that. I was more than happy to show them around or help diagnose or just get off the stubborn bolt without snapping it or whatever else.

But what that means is that it's useful to have somebody around who can come get you out of even a simple bad spot if you're just starting out. If your family has tools, perhaps it has somebody who can give you a hand when you get in to trouble.

Could be any number of things. WV forums would probably point to likely culprits of things to check.

I've never had a WV, but the first two times my car did that it was a failing water pump and then a timing belt tensioner that was going bad. In both cases, that could have lead to major engine damage if I hadn't noticed and tried changing out the likely culprits to see if the noise went away. In any case, it's something that the engine is spinning when the engine spins, and probably (hopefully) not the engine itself.
>>
>>17881924
>>17882145
Oh that's right. One other time it was that my valves needed to be relashed (mechanical lifters).

And I should also mention it could be something like a wonky engine mount depending on vehicle. Hit up some VW-specific forums.

3000GT is heavier and if you get the VR4 is twin turboed & AWD. Also less common so probably more expensive to replace parts.

Honestly the right answer here is the 3K Celica/Integra/RSX/Civic and spend the other 2K repairing. Maybe even have a little cash left over for some bolt-ons. Honda Civic EJ7 2000

Had new wheels installed and asked a guy to check the brakes. Said there were no problems with brake but offered to do the handbrake adjustment, he did it. Took it out on the road, and after 5 miles, the rear passenger-side wheel started smoking and the rim felt hot to the touch. Went back to the mechanic, spun the wheels, no seizure and problem vanished after he rode it for a min. Couldn't find the problem though brakes now seem to have developed a squeal when applied lightly (not pressing down all the way). Am I just being paranoid? I'm unsure if it has anything to do with the parking brake, the pads, or if its just the car adjusting to the new wheels.

Kinda sounds like he adjusted your parking brake wrong and you burned it down to where it "adjusted itself".

Probably would be prudent to ask him to double-check the rear brakes on that side in case there's excessive wear now on that side. Your parking brake might be connected a dedicated little shoe brake or something that might now be a bit toasted, but unless the car starts rolling down the hill with the parking brake on there's probably nothing much worth worrying about at this point.

Trucks are cool, especially if you can find a small one. My brother bought a cheap DIY trailer from Harbor Freight that has been a good deal for his very light use of it. What's it cost to rent a pickup for the day?

Depending on how clever you are and what you want to haul, you can strap a lot stuff to a roof, even if the other drivers are going to make the best faces at you. Remember to hang a red rag off the back of it it goes past the rear bumper.

My main issue is I'm already skint, so paying $5000+ for a truck would be tough for me. It's $20/day + $0.80/mile to rent a pickup here, so minimum $70/day for the distances I have to drive, which I think is bullshit if I'm just buying and transporting a couch or dryer or something, because I'm paying like 1/3 of the cost of the item to transport it.

I don't think I could strap a couch to the roof of my Civic, no matter how hard I tried.
>>
>>17883805
I strapped a couch to the roof of something slightly larger than a CRX once. I'm a madman though.

If you're in the business of needing to haul crap once in a while then at least in the US you can get somebody's old beat up truck for cheap. The only question in that case is if the fuel costs would work out long term.

But how often do you really buy a fridge? Prolly just eat the cost of getting it delivered or renting a truck if you don't have a friend you can butter up with beer and pizza.

You're approaching mechanics the wrong way.

Almost all mechanical principles are the same, you have a bolt and you unscrew it, you have a an electrical junction you unplug it, you have something heavy you get a jack or implement to help you move it.

Taking an engine out is no different than unbolting and replacing an alternator, in the scheme of things, you have to follow a specific procedure, except rather it being 10 steps it maybe 30 or 40 steps.

The real skills you learn are problem solving, when shit does not go as planned, that bolt is seized and you don't have enough leverage or strength to get it loose, or worse you've stripped the bolt head; or you pull the electrical plug apart and the sheathing comes apart in your hand or worse a previous owner has nigger something that is blatantly a fire hazard, or the heavy object you're moving is in a tight as fuck spot, or you can't get to the bolt that's holding it in and keep it from falling and breaking itself or you in the process.

My car has always idled kind of roughly. A mechanic told me that the rain affects the coil pack somehow, but I really don't remember the details. Any opinions on halo headlights on an NA Miata?

I have H4 conversions at the moment and there's a hole from a rock in one, and that side's HID bulb burned out the other day and had to order a new pair, so I'm probably going to replace the headlights as well in case the hole was related to the bulb going out prematurely.

He told me about the coil packs way back in winter when the weather really affected the idling. Back then it was rough but the RPMs were steady. I haven't yet gotten his input on this new issue. Is there any way to easily narrow it down to a specific part or do I have to check everything that might control idling?
>>
>>17884668
On a modern OBDII car it usually sucks unless you know what usually goes wrong on your particular car. If it were me personally I would start by doing the usual stuff replacing plug wires, plugs, gapping them, cleaning out possible gunk on the various valves, etc. I guess that's the equivalent of a modern "tune-up."

But coils are typically not very expensive and they do start to fail before they start making sparks at night when you spritz them with water. It's probably a busted air sensor tho.

I've decided I'll buy new winter ones when it starts getting cold and new summer tyres next spring.
The spare is however the original for the car so from 1999. What do I do about that, do I:
A. Cheap out and put one of the summer tires I'm using now
B. Buy an "all season" tyre
C. Buy 5 instead of 4 winter tyres and put one of them as the spare
D. Same as C but with summer tyres next year

I mean that's the key with spare tires really. You can have 1 off-pattern tire as long as you don't over-do it with that tire on. If you really want to be autistic just have an extra rim and tire for each set to use as a spare. But then that will make you lazy and you'll never end up getting the flat tire fixed since you have a perfectly good one to replace it.

>>
>>17890740
It's probably OK. Check for signs of surface cracks or wear and make sure it's at its rated PSI since it probably deflated over ~10yrs. If you're doubtful, ask you mechanic to have a quick look next time you get your car inspected.
>>
>>17891260
That depends entirely on the car. I put in new rear suspension in the course of a few hours one afternoon. Off the top of my head I want to say the entire subframe would have been all afternoon at best, and probably would have had me up against some goddamn seized nuts and rust problems that would have dragged it in to next weekend, and possibly in to a shop.

I regard that particular car as being relatively easy to wrench on. As in, I decided to pull the engine off and to redo the clutch and some other things once upon a time, never having had attempted anything of that scale, and it took part of Saturday and part of Sunday but was overall a fun experience.

How does /o/ corners? I thought that the best thing to do is: brake a little, hold down the clutch and then blip the gas while let the clutch up.
But I read somewhere that holding the clutch while cornering might get your car unstable. Is that true?
>>
>>17891667
Every car corners differently. You'll have to get a feel for how the chassis moves, how to angle it, and when to break and put down power to make the most of your available grip. Trying to dorifo around an empty parking lot in the snow is a great way to learn because you can do it at low speed and learn how to not be an asshat and nail your car into a curb.

Don't worry about the clutch around the corner until you're ready to take it to the track or something. It's good stuff but generally you shouldn't be driving that hard on the road until you know your problem is you jerked the car putting the clutch in and that's why you lost control.
