Well we have a date. Any truckers want to share their thoughts?

but why does anyone pay attention to this idiot and his pyramid scheme when he doesnt deliver on products?

>>17873441
there are three million of them, more than I thought before I did some searching. EV trucks would be disruptive to their industry, no? Just wanted to know if any of them had any thoughts on what they think EVs would take from or bring to their profession...
>>
>>17873454
>EV trucks would be disruptive to their industry, no?

no they wouldnt. CDL rules and laws would still apply and will continue to apply in the near future. PLUS, if the EV truck is automated, companies will not use them because they'll follow the law and will be unable to do deliveries on time, have you seen how truckers drive on the interstate?
>>
>>17873454
Aren't people still waiting to have their orders fulfilled from the first round of preorders like 4 years ago?

I heard there's horrific panel gap issues and reliability problems among the entire Tesla range. Not exactly something you want to hear about a 6 figure automobile.
>>
>>17873490
that's an interesting point about how the standards in the industry are maybe based on skirting the rules to begin with. But, I'd imagine that the benefits would outweigh whatever speed/sleep requirements current drivers had. Even if you have a driver go for 17 hours straight instead of whatever is the max allowed in a day, that still isn't as good as 24hrs, which a hot-swappable battery level 5 autonomy EV rig would do no?

>>17873495
The preorder stuff is for the model 3. You've been able to buy a S or X without more than the normal delivery wait (excluding custom orders) for a couple years now. In fact, they have a surplus of inventory as of now. The reliability is an issue, but it seems to be mainly lemons — not widespread design issues. besides the panel gaps of course, those seem to be a tesla feature now.
>>
>>17873503
Elon youre dreaming.

First of all... even if rules and regulations wouldn't apply and you were able to do more than a 8 hour drive at a time (one of the rules they do not skirt), you still need a person to unload the truck. Most transportation companies are small and have a low number (a dozen or a few dozen) and they do deliveries by hand out of the back bay door by hand. I know a particular big company in PA that just recently went to pallets and when they deliver to a different distribution company they have to restack pallets in order to get that shit delivered. So you still have the cost of the human there, you'd have a much higher cost of the EV truck, why even switch? They're not going to change the way they do business.

>>17873537
is it not common to just drop off the trailer and pick it up later? The big Safeway distribution center near me always has most of its loading bays full of truck-less trailers. I'd imagine that that sort of situation is pretty common, rather than the small operation deal you're explaining. Or perhaps not
>>
>>17873569
>is it not common to just drop off the trailer and pick it up later?

no because of issues between distributors and transportation companies, that is less common than most people think. you over estimate how much these companies trust eachother, they scrutinize their billing and time to the point of ridiculous, for many reasons, one of which is drivers are such fuck ups, no one wants that job that already tells you what kind of people you get, another reason, companies who use them think transportation companies are the scum of the earth, then you have warehouse and store managers on power trips of the sort "you have to pull out because truch XYZ is here and he's got priority over you" you got to put all that shit back on the truck and pull out, let the other guy have the bay, let him unload and then you start unloading all over again. You don't leave a trailer there without checking its entire contents because, no trust, so by the time you sit around doing all that, you take the trailer back with you.
>>
>>17873603
jeez. seems like a shitshow
>>
>>17873624
its actually amazing how things get done at all, most stores in the country and distribution warehouses in the country do not have enough inventory to miss more than one truck. it all works on a prayer.
>>
semi trucks are capital equipment that serve one purpose. to make their owners money. its not about being a special snowflake hipster with your overpriced personal conveyance, its about being cost effective, delivering trailers reliably and on time, and having ez maintenance.

EV's might work for regional delivery trucks, but OTR stuff is going to be diesel for many, many years.

well EVs have maintenance, and being on-time down pat. It's just a question about the overall cost equation and how they compare to existing rigs. Even if they are just 5% cheaper and 5% more reliable, that's good enough for the peanut counters out there. It'll be interesting for sure

well the model 3 has something like 500,000 pre-orders. But that doesn't exactly count, because it's a brand new production line and a brand new product. You can't expect them to pop out 500k cars overnight. At least wait to see if their ramp-up schedule is on track, mmkay?

>>17873743
lewd
>>
>>17873655
I used to unload trailers in warehouses around the city. Walmart has their shit pretty fucking dialed. Then you walk into another DC and it's like walking back in time. Most other warehouses and DC's are extremely inefficient and that's why you see such a price differences between Walmart and the others.

People don't realize how much time and resources it takes to get goods to the shelves. There's definitely no such thing as being green. It takes a lot of diesel to get shit done and likely will for years to come.

These electric trucks must be able to pull 80,000 lbs for 12 hours, recharge in 12 hours, and cost not much more than a regular semi if any companies are actually going to purchase them. That sounds impossible to me and I think that this is a marketing gimmick.

thats not true because there are not electric semi's yet. go hang out in the trucker fag thread. there is a huge logistical network thats in place to support current trucks that is non existent for any theoretical EV's. and as one anon already pointed out, even if you could fully automate the actual driving portion of trucking you still need a human there for the mountains of other bullshit it takes to get a load delivered on time.
>>

jesus christ elon, way to twist up facts. let's start with the 200k number. First of all, where did you get that from? Second of all in ten years, 200000 cars is all this brilliant company has produced, ten years, thats twenty thousand cars pery year. which is laughable.
> You can't expect them to pop out 500k cars overnight

They've had ten fucking years, who said anything about over night, were this not a company backed up by monopoly money it would have died five years ago. Plus, they make no money from the cars themselves, secondly, your 500k pre orders don't mean jack shit if you can't deliver the product, and the orders are non binding.

how do they expect it to not overheat, especially in the mountains. on top of that a regular truck can go through a "charge" full tank of gas and have it refilled in a few minutes, an electric truck would take hours to refuel and i'm guessing the batteries wouldn't last long anyway when pulling a load

I'm not knocking the cameras, for my vehicle it really does help me ensure I'm only backing over the people I want to.

But on stuff like a Ford Focus it's just fucking stupid.
>>
>>17873911
it'll supposedly have a lot of motors, maybe six. That would distribute the motor heat a bit. Coolant systems for EVs is not that difficult, it's just that companies want to skimp on them to save weight and cost. Like, the leaf is air-cooled, which is why it can't do well in the winter compared to liquid cooled teslas which can better thermally manage the batteries

Do you know how many car companies have emerged in the last 70 years and delivered more than 100k cars? 0. Nobody with a brain thinks Tesla is underperforming productionwise, which is why their company is valued higher than every other manufacturer. American middle class is really getting fucked. Being a truck driver is basically the last skilled trade that doesn't require years of schooling to get into and pays a wage you can live on.

>>17874185

They're made for long hauls and are superior to human drivers as they never need to stop to eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, etc and have a lower collision rate. Most of all though, there's no driver salary or benefits to pay. There's going to be no large corporation that uses human drivers in 10 years, so the market is going to get flooded with them willing to work dirt cheap.

i meant use the money as a downpayment on a cheap ass property somewhere. you can find one that cheap. fix it up on weekends if its in real bad shape, even at 500 a month if its at least 100 bucks over your mortgage payment you can cover insurance, and even if the
y burn the house down you are safe. and you will end up owning the property, the main thing is breaking even and covering the property taxes.
>>
>>17874288
500 a month probably wouldn't even pay for tax, insurance, and maintenance on a leased property. and a place that cheap/shitty is going to be in a neighborhood attracting very undesirable tenants.

listen i agree with you, ive been looking into it myself lately and its a great way to make money, but not when you have $5k to play with. $100k and now you're talking. property ownership is way more expensive than you think. you cant just 'fix up' a house in your spare time. youre forgetting building permits, licensed tradesmen, lawyers, etc.

start with 500$ on a Robinhood cash account. none of that "instant" shit because you can't daytrade. do 10-30$ trades and literally scalp pennies for gains. do this for X years until you actually figure out what you are doing and can say with full confidence you aren't gambling.
>>
>>17874427
there is no real way you can look at the stock market and say it isn't gambling. even futures trading, with its basis on a real thing, is gambling. you are putting your money down to faith. this is just an objective observation, if could be objectively looked at the code would have been cracked by now.
>>
>>17874441
theres a difference between trading and investing. yes, trading is a zero sum game with all day traders eventually trending towards breaking even. but if investing was gambling, the stock market wouldnt exist.
>>
>>17874468
are you talking about bonds in general? even for investing, your blue chips today, are trash tomorrow and then there is companies that function on a prayer that their investors don't get past the cache and keep thinking of the company as a black box that makes money. Either way, the stock market exists because it serves a general purpose in the economy, one way to look at it is as you said, its "investment" but all those investments are seriously based on faith, but that faith does play an important part in the economy, how else would we get railroads built.
>>
>>17873490
An automatic truck can drive 24/7. Following the speed limit won't delay it more than a human having to rest.
>>
>>17874499
How exactly would that play out since the driver isn't allowed to drive for more than, say for the sake of argument 8 hours, because I think the exact number may be 9 or 10.

The law isn't going to change as soon as an automatic vehicle exists, and there are no laws written to allow the vehicle to move 24/7. Does this mean the human behind the wheel isn't there to act as a failsafe in the case of a fuckup? No autonomous EV will ever be allowed without a driver, society won't accept it, and if it did you better get ready for some serious theft happening with EV trucks.
>>
>>17874497
i feel like you just like using the term 'gambling' very liberally. like using it to describe anything that involves risk. getting out of bed in the morning is a gamble, since you could get run over by a car on the way to work. starting up your car is a gamble, since there is a nonzero chance your timing chain snaps and destroys your motor.

investing in a company is more than just putting your money on black on a roulette wheel. casino games dont pay out dividends. investing isnt a closed loop function like rolling dice. you can research a company, their products, their leadership, their roadmaps, and use that to make informed decisions that youll never find at a casino.

>>
>>17874632
If you're talking about 2008, the market has fully recovered since then. It's fully recovered from every dip, crash, and recession. Investing implies long term, to which these periods you're referring to are merely a blip and completely irrelevant. Day traders lost money, diversified long term investors did not.

Do you mean retirees? Because outside of those no one else has the money to "invest".

You also don't get dividends worth a damn unless you have money in the tens of thousands in a single company so all this diversicatio gal literally only applies to rich people. Who can afford to toss a hundred thousand at a diversified portfolio to play with since that is the o lay real way to make money, and someone who is that rich doesn't want to risk doing that they'll just buy a index fund.

lol, sure, if by 'rich people' you mean 'anyone who has worked more than a couple years in their life'. yes, you need money to make money. welcome to real live adulthood.

>Do you mean retirees? Because outside of those no one else has the money to "invest".
what does this even mean? you can invest $5 if you want. more initial investment yields greater returns, yes. is that what youre trying to tell me? lol no shit. 7% a year is 7% a year. over 30 years that's an 8x yield. your $5 will be $40, your $5k will be $40k, and your $500k will be $4M. dont worry, youll learn all about this in your personal finance class your freshman year in college.

what am i even doing here. im going to bed.

invest your money kids.

>>American middle class is really getting fucked. Being a truck driver is basically the last skilled trade that doesn't require years of schooling to get into and pays a wage you can live on.

1. No its not
2. trucking pays shit considering that you're stuck in a mobile cuckshed 28 days a month eating take out and slowly morphing into an obese diabetic who shits in a jug
3 What up with dipshit NEETS circlejerking over the fantasy of "middle class skilled labor" jobs that require no brain power, drive, or skill whatsoever? Sorry you lazy cucks can't get paid $60 an hour to press a button in a factory now go fucking kill yourselves.

You are either so ignorant about battery technology that you shouldn't have an opinion or are praying a miracle technological break through so you can feel bad about there being "literally no jobs XD". You're probably one of those dumb fuck NEETS who spend at least 8 hours a day bitching about "muh ebil corporashuns muh ebil boomers muh no jerbs " when you can't be fucked to spend 10 minutes to do an application or go into an interview without reeking of weed and unwashed cock.

Tesla are such beta fucks that Musk still won't reveal just who gave him a verbal agreement on Hyperloop.

Everyone was laughing out loud when Musk used the term verbal agreement because only agreements written down and signed for a big project actually carry any weight.

It's pretty obvious that Musk says bullshit from time to time because he's afraid his investors will start leaving him.

Why do you talk as if having tens of thousands of dollars in a single company is normal, it's not. More than half of the adults in America doesn't have enough money ($1000) saved for a emergency, so quit it with this bullshit of "anyone who's worked more than a couple years",

Not a /pol/ack but your whole comment is what people call jewish trickery. You literally can't get dividends worth a damn unless you have tens of thousands of dollars in a single company and other tens of thousands on other companies and so on.
>you can invest any amount you want
The money and time you're gonna lose on this shit is laughable if you are to poor to afford it to begin with. And by to poor I mean don't have enough to spend hundred thousand on stock. A better advice for 90% of world wide anons is don't bother unless you're buying an indexed fund, even better advice is buy treasury bonds if you don't want your money sitting still.

Best post so far. Removing the driver is far off. But reducing maintance and fuel cost is significant for regional and urban transport. Not to mention I imagine carbon taxes will become more and more common, especially in Europe.

I mean, salvage laws are already established. Once a vehicle is incapacitated and no one can operate it, it belongs to whomever takes it.

What if there were autonomous trucks that couldn't drive full of electronic goods? It would be even easier to rob them since they would never move and they would be empty at night. They could call them "stores" or "warehouses." There would be literally nothing preventing people from robbing them. That's why autonomous vehicles will never be a thing.

For all it knows it ended up running into stop an go traffic. What is the trigger going to be to call the police, opening the door?, how would you set up a system like that without it being triggered by every dockworker that forgets to shut it off?
Even then, what do you think the police response time to an alarm going of on a semi would be, how would the transit company relay the signal to the police quickly?

If you got a 6 man crew, 3 vans, a driver and loader each, cut through the lock, open the doors and could steal a good amount of stuff in just a few minutes.

>>17878583
Stores have security cameras on the outside, inside, metal gates across the doors. The floor space is much more open and products more spaced out, takes longer to grab the goods and run out, and the police know exactly where the store is when the alarm trips.

With semi trailers, you can just cut the lock and you are in, all the merchandise is in a compact space on pallets. You can just pull a van next to it and pull as many boxes as you can, throw them in the back and get out quick. Also would be an increased police response time since they are mobile and can be at any location.

The 360-deg camera that is monitored by a 24/7 logistics center? They'll still be monitoring the trucks, just instead of one guy driving there will be one guy watching ten cameras/trucks or more and a host of sensors. If a door opens at the wrong point, like on a roadway, the logistics center would know and the cops would be called.

Currently fleet management systems use a combination of satellite-based tracking and cellular. There are certainly problems with autonomous trucking, it's not all roses, but the fear of theft is likely something that's pretty easy to deal with.

>>17879363
I used an example of one guy watching ten trucks, which already is savings by an order of magnitude. In reality, one guy would be watching much much more.
