Depends on the engine trim, but it handles really well. It among the first economy compact cars to have independent rear suspension while everyone else had torsion beams. Aftermarket is decent too, thank to the brits.

SVT/ST170 is definitely more fun than a regular Focus but mostly because of the suspension, they aren't much faster at all thanks to the getrags gearing.

A 2005-2007 Focus ST with the Duratec 2.3L is actually pretty much on par with the SVT in terms of straight line performance, and with a Cosworth intake and turbo kit you can put down 300whp easily. The only easily attainable F/I kits for the SVT are non-intercooled supercharger kits or a custom turbo, and the Zetec is not as responsive to mods as the Duratec is. I'd say the '05-'07 ST is a better choice if you want something fast since they are pretty much the same price.
