Do you think EVs will have a huge effect or motorsports?

What about on high end auto companies like Ferrari. Surely when electric motors are significantly cheaper than Ferrari engines yet still out perform them, Ferrari would be mostly obsolete?

Right, here's the problem with EV's in motorsports.

>They're fucking lame.

Look at Formula E. Sure it's really cool in concept and its cool in the sense that a lot of hard work and engineering has to go into creating these cars, but it's really not all that interesting as a series. If the battery runs low in one of the cars, they switch cars to let one recharge while one is out on the track. So there's no frantic pit stops, there's no in and out in 10 seconds and back to racing. It's watching a driver get out of one car and get into the other.

The other thing about EVs in motorsports is that it loses that "sexiness" that current ones have. Think about how movies or documentaries dramatize racing. It's usually a lot of revving, a lot of engine noise. There's also a lot of shifting (look at the F&F franchise). That's some of the parts that make racing so cool. I can't see a bunch of cars whirring or humming along be as cool. It's too quiet. Hell, Formula 1's fans were pretty much revolting when the V6 hybrids sounded like shit especially compared to the V12, V10, V8's.

So EV's in motorsports? Maybe. The change could happen but I think it would be so hard and turn off so many fans that it wouldn't be something that will change anything any time soon.

You know that LaFerrari, Porsche, Acura NSX already has electric motors already right? They use them to provide instant power out of the corners then the main engine takes over.
>>
Hybrids are already the norm. The biggest roadblock for all electric performance cars are the batteries

>Fomula E
>drivers have to change cars when the battery runs low
>>

Right but what happens once motors become better than the engine all around and get a lot cheaper?
>>
>>17870649
Nothing if the batteries are still shit
>>
>>17870419

People don't buy Ferraris because they're fast

And EVs will kill motorsport. Theres a reason CVT gearboxes aren't used in motorsport and its because they make the car sound like shit
>>
>>17870662
CVTs used to be used in F1
>>
>>17870697

wrong

the only F1 car with a CVT transmission only saw testing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3UpBKXMRto

CVTs were promptly banned shortly after for obvious reasons

no
and engines are not the issue

Electric motors are already better and cheaper than the ICE and have been for quite a long time. The problem now is as it was 180 years ago when the first electric car was made and probably still will be in 180 years from now, the batteries.

In 1907 when the first mass produced mid sized BEV went on sale it had a range of 80 miles, by 1996 that had increased to 90 miles now the average is 100. With only the extreme high end (cost not quality wise) getting more than 200.

>there's no frantic pit stops, there's no in and out in 10 seconds and back to racing.

> F1 pit stops are tire changes only, no refuelling.
> Tesla batteries claim to have enough range for a grand prix distance
> F1 is already using flywheel hybrid systems

They could at least change the rules so that you can only run one car and have to swap out the battery, that alone would make things more interesting.
