No. Not at all. They were discontinued for a reason. I had a rental and the das was rattling with 10,000 miles on it. They suffer bad reliability. The only engine worth a damn is the top trim 2.4 and even with that they are slower than 1st gen neons. Get some taste first before reconsidering a car.

Not that I got something luxury or brand new, but got Golf Mk4. Problem is - I wanted some japan shitbox, because its simple, reasonably economical if petrol engine. Japan econoboxes from 90s have something in themselves. Something mysterious, cool that I cannot explain. I WANT that FUCKING RATTLING CAN SOUND, I WANT that disgusting wind blowing in my ear while driving 60kmh+. I want to feel absolute zero comfort and luxury. Raw vehicle with minor improvements like ABS and some airbags. Now that I got Golf mk4 petrol. The engine is shit - I mean it runs alright, but fuel consumption is huge for what it offers power-wise. Gearboxes on all VW mk4 platform is absolute shit, cant operate it normally, always screeks, gets stuck and shit. Its quite heavy for a hatchback too. My "first" car was Mazda - holy fuck that 72hp shitcan made me smile every time I got in it. Reason why I didn't got japan shitbox, is because majority of them are rusty and our climate aint pretty, so rust will spread even faster, thus its not great investment. But I'd rather get some bodywork done, something thats clearly visible and is easily reachable to repair , instead of mechanical issues that really is pain in ass to symptomise (?) and work on. Well, now it'll be probably too late for a shitbox to purchase and I will probably buy some unreliable German premium like the rest of people do.

My parents bought me a jetta tdi as my first car. I really wanted a Japanese econobox as my first car and was in yhe process of saving up for one, and my parents bought me a volkswagen. I hated it at first, but I learned to love it, since after all, it was free. Gonna add some simple mods after I hit 300k when I will rebuild the engine.

Its by far probably the best choice for someone who wants cheap, reliable, economical and practical car. Lots of cheap shit, relatively easy to work on, shitloads of spare parts on junkyards. I do like Golfs, but I've always wanted to try Jap car. Time never stops and with each day theres less and less old shitboxes in existence. I know exactly when you mean. My jetta is great but sometimes I fantasize about buying some old jdm (jzx100 chaser, 180sx) and learning to drift. There's even a sr20det swapped 86 for sale locally and I could afford it. But insurance would be put the ass for my age group and I'm in university and can't afford the extra cost.

And yep, same shit, insurance is fucking crazy. My country's insurance just rocketed and is still growing right now. I'd pay probably like 2-2.5x times of actual car worth.
