What is /o/'s thoughts on Gen1 Nissan Frontiers? Are they shit? Or a good truck to start modding?

They're okay. I had a Pathfinder for a long time and did a lot of thinking about upgrading to an Xterra/Frontier. Lots of research as a result.
The VG33 is an okay motor. Bit of a pain to work on, but reliable. Bad MPGs, especially if you lift/tires.
Parts are easy enough to find online, and not that expensive. Stuff is easy to DIY. They handle well enough off-road, just as good as any other early 2k small trucks.
Lifting it a ton is hard to do. Small lifts to fit tires are okay, but will probably be some rubbing.
Lockers are readily available. I'd make sure you at least have a stock rear LSD or get some type of locker. ARB makes air lockers for these which are super nice, but expensive.
