pretty neat car i feel like itll go undetected by 99% of the population just thinking its like a passat or something, too bad its not the W12 motor but still v8 is better than most things on here anyways neat purchase
>>
>>17851197

Its boring as fuck and that was intended for sure, and they can be pricey to maintain (hence the V8). Thanks for the color compliment though! It's exactly the one I wanted on a car like this.
>>
>>17851207

It sounds like a V8, a large body of Phaeton enthusiasts prefer the V8 sound. The W12 is weridly quiet

Fukken love this car

aaaaaaaaaaaaaand another car that gets tossed again when the next $1000 brake disc is due.
>>
>>17851281

OP here, I'm in a lucky spot where I can get both parts and work done for cheap. I actually intend on keeping this car as a DD for as long as I possibly can. Regular services, washing, the works. It won't be noticed, but it will be seen on the road for a long time.
>>
>>17851290
have fun.
I bet it is obscenely comfy
>>
I want one of those, but I just don't think I'm up to wrenching on all the kraut space magic in that car. Mad jelly that you have one, and can take care of it.

underrated car but not sure why the average /o/tist would need a 4 door limousine.

Good choice, it will last longer.
>>
How comfy is it?
>>
>>17851181
W12 is a absolute beast cuz it can hit 220 mph quietly and smoothly, but hit and miss reliable.
If you want easy, less headache one, V8 is a best phaeton you can get.

>the first step to changing the wiper blades is accessing the infotainment system...

What did he mean by this?
>>
>>17851219
It's the old standby Audi 4.2, right? Nice engine, really nice sound, although I'm not sure if the Phaeton has the FSI (with more robust timing components) or the 40V (which fucks up its chain guides and tensioners before 100k).
>>
>>17852107

He needs to inform Phaeton that he replaces the wipers, so it will not confuse. The system can read the wipers and adjust their resting angle every other time to prevent premature blade wear.

>First, when in wash mode, the wipers will sweep three times, pause for a few seconds, and sweep one last time to pick up any leftover fluids. Second, when the wipers come to rest, they adjust their resting angle every other time to prevent premature blade wear. Finally, when the headlight washers are activated, the nozzles operate one side at a time so as to not compromise visibility.

>>
>>17852140
Sounds like over-engineering.
>>
>>17852107
He won't be paying $2,000 a year in running costs unless it goes through four tires a year. A big expense on buying an old car is pretty normal, people don't sell their car if it perfect.

>>
>>17851181
Im not even being 4chan fuckish

You blew it, youre literally retarded and you should give your money to other people to spend since youre so bad at it.

You bought a cheap knockoff A4 that under performs in everyway with almost none of the features or performance of the Audi because you wanted to save a couple grand.

Its cheap VW bullshit and Im sure you have to have a special shop to take care of it without getting fucked in the asshole with every piece of maintenance.
>>

I like that the phaeton is so fucking shitty most people compare it ot an A4 instead of the A8 lol
>>
>>17853775
So buy an acura or lexus...

Not that fucking hard.

If you want luxury and features you can literally hit a half a dozen brands, in america at least, that are more reliable, more features, more cost effective, and more fun.

The phaeton is like buying the most expensive kia on the lot because you "dont want to attract attention but still want features".
>>
>>17853785
>shitty
In what regard?
>>
Y'all fucking know that Audi and VW are basically the same company.
Audi develops most of VAGs engines, suspensions and drivetrains.

Yes in a way the Phaeton is a Audi, but so is a Golf.
>>
>>17853793
What, you mean like the fact youre spending high end german luxury car money on a car that doesnt even have air conditioned seats when one of its Asian competitors puts that shit in for less cost?

This car was a mistake.
>>
>>17853792
Acura and Lexus are still showy. My boss drives a Ford Fusion Sport and has a 10+ million net worth
>>
>>17853798
The difference is that Audi actually tries, VW just shits garbage out and once in a while gets motivated enough to create the golf, r32, etc.
>>
>>17853820
You cant seriously be trying to make a comparison here.

Sure maybe thats what he likes, but he CANT be a driving enthusiast.

I mean for fucks sake what about premium sound, rear space, mid and high end torque bands?
>>
>>17853826
>Audi actually tries
Which results in bullshit like this.
>>
>>17853820
Interior is shit and your boss has no taste.

Its like how an Actuarial Mathematics professor is smart as fuck but has to ask some highschool intern how to send an email.
>>
>>17853475

you dumb fucking cunt.
>>
>>17853841
What the fuck is this and what is going on there?
>>
>>17853826
Why would VW cannibalize itsself? By creating high class luxury vehicles it would just shift its customers from Audi to VW.
Comparing VW and Audi as different entities is pointless, its the same company. The only reason the Golf GTI exist is because of its legacy, all sporty VAG vehicles are in Porsche and Audi.
>>
>>17853855
Four chains to handle the timing, and I think the oil pump. Meant take up as little space as possible, front to back at least.
Coupled with cheap VAG plastic on the guides and tensioners, it's a real fucking nightmare.

Oh, and that's the flywheel/gearbox side of the engine.

My grandpa on my dad's side was exactly like that. Teaching University math for decades (the kind of guy that didn't just teach classes, but he taught other teachers as well), but almost knew nothing about electronics outside power tools.

I believe they do have air conditioned seats cuz I rode in that car before.

I checked out the spec of Phaeton. Yes, it has the 18-way Heated, Cooled Seats with Massagers.
>>
>>17853855
The German tendency to overengineer things, for better or for worse. For example, Audi's Quattro system was, in 1980, insanely complicated and also insanely effective, leading to their utter domination of rally motorsport for a while. Current Audi's have an incredibly space-efficient engine bay, but at the same time, you have to take the front bumper off to do a lot of fairly normal work on the car.
>>
>>17853855
Audi ditched the stupid belt for a chain, like most other automakers. And since the chain was now designed to last the life of the car, Audi decided to stick it waaaay in the back of the engine, up against the firewall. Apparently the theory was that the chain would be so robust, and strong, and dependable, that it would never have to be serviced. You can probably guess what happened next.

You see, as it turns out, the chain itself didn't have any problems with dependability. But VAG, being VAG, decided to use substandard materials for the chain tensioners, and the cam adjusters, which are two related – and highly important – components that keep the chain turning around and around and around every time you drive the car. The result is that these parts eventually fail, requiring the replacement of virtually everything you see in that pic. >>17853841

This issue didn't not affect all Audi V8. Most people have made it to 150,000 miles without issue. Few people have suffered the failure at 75,000 miles.
>>
>>17853756
This car has more in common with the Bentley Continental
>>
>>17853841
CHENS ARE MOAR RELIABULL, AS YOO CAN SEE HEAR. ZE TIMING CHAIN ALLOWS VOR EFFISHENCY AND ZE VORSPRUNG OF ZE AUDI.

AN ZEN WE USE PLASTEEK CHAIN GUIDES LOL
>>
>>17854097
>But VAG, being VAG, decided to use substandard materials for the chain tensioners, and the cam adjusters
>substandard materials

This explains why that engine becomes so unreliable because of cheap materials. The bean counters should be hanged.
Poor Audi.
>>
>>17854177
At least they learned their lesson with future revisions of that engine, the FSI variants don't seem to suffer from timing chain guide failure as often and early.
>>
>>17854094
>utter domination of rally motorsport

More utter domination of propaganda. 2 driver and champioship wins is not domination.
>>
>>17854479
I should say motorsport, not rally motorsport.

>Quattro was banned in BTCC ( british touring car campionship) after Frank Biela literally destroyed the rest of the car with 1995 A4 touring. In 1996,when audi won 7 out of 7 championships (germany, sweden,UK,South Africa,Italy,Belgium,Spain,New Zeland) the quattro was banned in any touring or supertouring competetition.
>Audi’s all-wheel-drive 200 Quattro so thoroughly dominated Trans-Am in 1988 that Trans-Am banned both all-wheel-drive and non-American engines the following year.

Audi had been nerfed many times cuz they were OP.
>>
Your fucking brave as fuq OP

I want one super bad. i just dont want to spend Bentley maintenance on a VeeDubya
>>
>>17852149
Overengineering yes but not the way BMW and Mercedes do overengineering, where they'd have an independent computer and sensor assembly for each of those systems. In the Phaeton, the computer just times stuff alternatively. Much simpler.
>>
That seems like a lot for a old German luxo barge. I picked up a 2000 E38 for $2500.

>>17852149
Almost like it's German.

Where you either get something mindlessly simple (Early VW's and Porsches for instance and well made) or something well made but entirely too engineered so when it eventually breaks it'll cascade failure and you need either a mortgage to pay someone, or a degree in astro physics to fix it yourself.
>>
OP here. I love how polarizing this car is! Wanted to respond to some stuff:

>>17851336

I intend to use it to ferry around my wife/friends in comfort. I like to drive, but I'm no conefag myself.

>>17855468
This car is rare enough and in good enough condition to be worth its asking price. Great deal on that E38, but believe me, the Phaeton is a whole 'nother ball game. If you can, have a seat in one.

>>17856681
I'm glad you posted this.

>>17853475
The choice on the lack of prestige was entirely intentional. That, and I like my car to be able to carry passengers and items comfortably.

>>17852154
Thanks pal, I will. I intend to keep it on the road as long as possible.

>>17851465
Fuck the W12. I might be a little masochistic for buying a unicorn like this, but I'm not THAT masochistic.
>>
>>17856756

>>
How is it a knock off of an Audi when it is literally an A8 platform made by the same company as the A8?
>>
Go VIP and put some tasteful rims and lower it, don't stance it though, that shit is fucking stupid.
>>
>>17857222

nice trips faget
>>
>>17857250

I intend to keep it bone stock. It's a pretty rare car and I would prefer to keep it as-is. Knowing the finicky nature of VAG cars in general, going aftermarket might cause problems as well.
>>
FUN FACT! The car's Greek mythical namesake was believed to be why niggers exist!
>>
>>17857265
True, I own an Audi A4 that is stock as well and its a headache to maintain, considering keeping myself under the whip of VAG and getting a GTI, but the one my brother owns has been a nightmare so I'm apprehensive.
>>
>>17857278

I didn't think I would enjoy a VAG product this much. Personally I prefer a more reliable car (I also have a 5-speed Accord, and the wife drives a 2011 fleet Impala) but I get the appeal now, shit is just so comfortable.
>>
>>17857294
It's because its fresh and also the Phaeton is a ridiculously luxurious car built upon meeting such a ludicrous standard of build quality. Just really stay on top of it, because when VAG goes wrong, it really likes to fuck you.
>>
>>17851181
Nice, that's the same colour combination as my W12.
