Why the hate for automatics /o/??
If you have 2 identical cars bug one is manual and one is automatic, the automatic is gonna win the race
Automatic transmissions are designed to shift the most efficient time
But*
Nope, automatics have slip and won't shift into redline, not even in sport mode. Sperg more
>>17838229
tuned automatics will
manual shifting looks cool and makes me feel like an anime character
>>17838212
Pro tip; shift times=!performance
Shift time is arbitrary when your acceleration in gearbox is slower.
>inb4 slushbox owning downsyndrome kids start quoting automated manuals a an though they're slushboxes
>>17838239
>has to tune his automatic just to win a straight line race
What a waste of time and money
>>17838239
>tuned automatics will
Or you know, just buy a car with a zf8.

kind of a spergwar going on here. i'll join in.
First of all; there's two kinds of automatics.
Like >>17838250 says.
slushboxes that loose significant power in the torque converter. and there's automated manuals.
but even automated manuals often don't have as low shifting time as possible because that will be jerky as hell.
just like you don't always shift as hard and fast as you can in a manual.
still, for 99% of the drivers any automatic manual will shift faster than they can themselves. And those drivers who can shift faster than your average automatic manual will probably drive something that's expensive enough to have a not-so-standard-automatic-manual. One that can change shift-times depending on drive mode. And one that will shift much faster than any human being in the hard sport mode.
that all said and done, a manual is simpler. therefore cheaper. the saved money could go to performance. giving you a faster car for the same price. (off course a faster engine is usually going to cost you a lot more than the price difference between auto and manual.)
they used to be shitty. now theyre good. manual drivers still cling to their beliefs
the main defenses against autos were
>when they decided to shift, which could be either too high or too low, causing wasted MPG or engine power
>shifting at the wrong time, more of a problem with trucks hauling something heavy going up a hill, which would cause the truck to lose enough power to not make it over the hill. that has since been somewhat fixed with a SMT option that you can choose to use
>shifting in autos used to be way slower, like shitty slower
and thats why we have the same damn threads every fucking day. because people shut their eyes on automatics for the past 20 years. See you tomorrow auto thread.

Driving a manual is just more fun. Its more engaging. You use both feet and both hands to operate more controls simultaneously, and it feels fucking awesome shifting even if you're in a gay little Miata.
Fancy new DCT gearboxes are faster, more efficient, and paddle shifters are cool race car tech, but the manual is still more fun.

>Automatic transmissions are designed to shift the most efficient time
ha, I beg to differ, I borrowed an auto while my car was in the shop. Driving with an auto was the worst experience in my life, every time I set off it constantly went into a high gear and then whenever I was driving on a flat surface with no other cars in sight, it constantly downshifted for no reason, I have no idea what mentality people need in order to think this shit is ok to live with, I'd rather off myself then own a car with an automatic gearbox.

The gearbox wants to stay in the highest gear to keep the engine revving low, and it will drop back down to a lower gear when you give it throttle for passing.
Unless the computer is malfunctioning this does yield improved fuel economy, and it can fly through the gears faster than you can by a longshot.
Sure the automatic is faster, but the manual is infinitely more fun.
>>17838630
yeah but is that """"""fun"""""" worth 0.39 seconds extra each lap???
>>17838620
It was flat fucking ground, I kept my foot in the same cunting spot and it just felt suddenly accelerating like a man called Tyrone punched me in the back suddenly, also I ment literally setting off with the engine grumbling for more power
>>17838229
Nigga it depends on the automatic and the application. Automated manuals have the same power transfer mechanism as a manual, only computer operated. DCT will always shift faster than a person could. Even torque converter has its uses as the best option for offroad
>>17838651
Absolutely. Your driving on the street much more often than the track. It's much more fun on the street and on the track, and 99% of people don't race competitively so who gives a fuck about lap times. My hellcat is a manual and I still shred virtually every other car at my local track.

Are you a professional race car driver who needs to win for that sweet sponsorship money or are you just some dude enjoying their car on a track?
