I'd like to thank the Gaerne boot company, because otherwise my foot would currently be broken from my 600 pound motorcycle landing on it after I ate shit in foot deep sand.

Also, bolt broke in shift linkage on BMW GS out in the middle of fucking nowhere Wyoming so an allen wrench and safety wire saved the day. Fork seal blew as well. It was an eventful day.

US 191 between Morenci Mine and Springerville has some pretty awesome elevation changes and curves. Make sure you're fuelled up because the one little gas station halfway up the road only sold regular and was not a 24h pump last time I drove through. Icon makes really nice graphic helmets. Nice in a cosmetic sense though. Their quality isn't as good as a scorpion or agv but I'm happy with my recent purchase of their Alliance GT. Internal drop down sunvisor that you can pick from 10 different colors and their faceshields also offer 10 selections. No chin curtain though.

My old helmet was a Speed and Strength. Fuck that brand. Literally the converse equivalent of gear. My jacket, pants, and armored vest from them all have issues.

My GT was 180 on closeout. Regular graphic price is 225 iirc,

not to be your mom but your priorities in shopping for a helmet should be that it fits your head correctly, that it has good impact test ratings, and good ventilation. beyond that, probably noise levels but you should be wearing earpro when you ride anyway.

once you find a lid that fits your noggin and budget, pick a design for it that you like best.

Pretty dumb senpai but it'd help if you gave a budget range. Im not going to be that autist that plays the mom game. I'm sure we're all guilty of compromising safety for style, just to different extents.

Also if you have a spare helmet you can pick up girls for rides.
>>
>>17834167
how do you know its even your size?
you won't know that until you wear the damned thing.
all helmets have different shapes between models and brands because every persons head is a different shape.

Fucking hell man. NEVER buy a used lid. Helmets change and mold to fit the rider's skull. They're oftentimes stolen with replaced straps and or damaged. Helmets absorb energy by compressing multiple layers of soft styrofoam-like lining. Jesus christ man.

>>17834188
Obviously by knowing your headshape. Experience is everything in riding. I had a round shape helmet that caused me pressure point pain up the ass but I kept it because I was a retard who liked the look and guess what, it eventually broke in and stopped hurting. But the sizing was wrong due to my retardedness. The GT I recommended seems up your alley. 200$ range. Buy it new and pick up a mirrored internal visor of your favorite color, actually if you want a silver one I can give you my brand new one. If you ever night ride or go through tunnels dont get a mirror faceshield. They look sweet but unless you carry the clear with you you're risking extreme discomfort or poor visibility. Internal shield helmets are the shit to me I love the look and functionality.

And honestly man, no one gives a fuck about your lid. You do you. Cmon man I really want to like you since you got the bike I dream about step it up senpai.

>>
>>17834188
And for knowing if it fits you wear the helmet for an hour or so and if it starts giving you a headache it's not a good fit. You could keep it and hope it breaks in if you really want to. The liner should be snug on your cheeks and with the straps on you shouldnt be able roll the helmet left or right laterally and your cheeks should move with it when you try to. You shouldnt be able to roll it off from pushing the chin up or the back up. Chin strap should be as tight as possible without choking you. What I do is lift up my chin, tighten, look down and loosen slightly and readjust until it isnt horribly uncomfortable.

Another way to cheat is sizing up or down the liner itself.

Went to the dealership the other day to dick around, actually sat on some bikes I was interested in; is it a thing now to have seats that feel like a thin layer of leather over straight metal? I was really disappointed especially that the XSR 900 was so rigid and seemed like it would get uncomfortable real quick on the road. Is this just normal for "sportier" bikes? Is it not as bad as it seems like it would be? The XSR is my current major aspiration but if it's gonna kill my tailbone after 15 minutes on the road I'm gonna go the straight naked route

Aftermarket seats exist. Sport bike seats are narrower and have sharper edges because performance and manueverbility over comfort but nakeds should already be better comfort wise. Are you gripping the tank with your knees or the seat with your thighs? The latter is not ideal.
>>
>>17834361
Nobody has ever had a problem shifting their ass off a thicker seat. They just do it for the racer image/feel.

It might also be a japanese plot to keep sportbikes as track toys and discourage their use as DDs because I sat on an S1000RR and the seat was okay.
>>
>>17834361
I probably subconsciously went knees to tank as I've heard that being preferred before, but I wasn't really reading so far into it while I was there since I'm not purchasing anytime soon. Could easily be a thing where first impressions are different from actual riding comfort.

previous question aside, for whoever has decent input, XSR or FZ-09? I know the engine is fundamentally the same, but does the XSR really only have different looks going for it?
>>
>>17834365
I've noticed BMW makes some good seats on their higher end bikes. They're firm but well shaped
>>
>>17834365
Its easier to move on a narrower seat. BMW is well known for good stuff so youre likely looking at a shitty seat. Just get an aftermarket, some of them look really neat too.

Yes, but you have to make sure to remove all residue from the system. You can do that by dumping about a half a pound of flour in the tank and running the bike on full throttle for about 3 minutes, that should bind all ol fuel and make sure the pipes are clean.

Just because you can get a loan, doesn't mean you should. I mean, if you're super into not giving a fuck about saving money, at least set yourself up with some kind of goal, like 50% cash 50% loan.

Small loans is where they make the fastest money and for good reason. "It's only 5k, that's like 6 months of lazy saving", then add the administration, interest etc.

>Is that always the case?
Basically yes, they require lots more work.
>>
>>17834993
Kickstarts get old super fast, and that's speaking from experience with a perfectly tuned set of carbs.

Older bikes should be avoided by beginners if you've never ridden before, most of them are basically baby versions of race replicas (at least the 250~ I4s) and the 2 strokes are really only detuned enough so they don't foul with daily driving. The larger 80-90's bike are very heavy and have very outdated suspension for their newer counterparts and parts can start to become an issue unless you like buying brand new from the dealer at massive $$$.
>>
>>17833575

Hit the shit on the road and wiped out. Should have stayed off it, was easy to see.
>01:00
Does stupid stunt, loses balance, can't recover because he's standing on the fucking seat instead of the footpegs. Should have tried not being a tattooed stunting squid faggot.
>01:26
His mate doesn't know how to counter-steer, target fixates on the curb, front wheel loses, then recovers traction (either because sand / brush combination or because road surface is uneven there) and fucking flips him off. Should have learned how to turn. Counter-lean, push bike through.
>01:35
Goes over bump which upsets the bike and irritates him. Brakes on painted surface, thinks he braked too late, rear loses traction and breaks to the side. Target fixates into wall. Should have braked earlier, released rear brake earlier, leaned and made the corner (though he'd have risked lowsiding, the surface doesn't look very grippy). So mostly, brake earlier.
>02:19
Goes over curb, panics, rolls off throttle and possibly grips front brake. Weight shifts to front, rear loses traction and breaks out. Lowside. Should have stayed off the curb, stayed on the throttle.
>02:34
Doesn't know how to turn. Panics when he thinks he'll run wide, pulls front brake, front loses traction. Should have used counter-steering to induce lean, pushed the bike through the turn, stayed off the brake.
>03:04
No idea what that was.
>03:23
Turns too early, doesn't know how to counter steer. Hits bump or ridge in the road, front loses and recovers traction rapidly, bike throws him off. Should have turned in later using counter steering.
>04:05
Not quite sure, I think he used too much trottle too early on. Bike tries to tighten corner, he panics and rolls off again. Loads the front, not enough grip, loses front. Should have waited a little longer or used less throttle.

You can get light with "ok" handling, but parts availability will be hard. Usually old light bikes are not particularly fast, and have mediocre frame stiffness while also requiring new shocks depending on your weight and state of disarray.
I would get an old bike for your 2nd bike, or something to use as a project.
I think my old bike has good handling, but that is because I came from a scooter.

How does the idea of buying a babby 50~100cc mini dirtbike for learning and otherwise fucking around on sound? Like the ones for kids.

I've realized being afraid of dropping a bike I cant afford to replace or repair has been hindering my learning. I'm 130 lb. Wondering if it'd be powerful enough for stunting in the backyard. Maybe like a little pit bike.

Not his fault at all. Could have looked in the mirror but even so, scooter rider went too fast and picked a shit line that he couldn't have predicted. He obviously saw him coming so might have avoided the crash by staying outside, but I think it was too late for that.
>04:42
Panics when he sees the car in front of him, brakes. Looks like there's also a small ridge in the road which might have reduced traction slightly, road is wet but that patch is dry. In any case he braked too hard and lost the front. Should have looked further ahead to see the car earlier, be prepared to brake gently if at all instead of hamfisting it. Maybe used the rear brake.

Car should have yielded. Driver might have avoided crash if he downshifted earlier so he wasn't distracted in the roundabout, and if he was ready for the car pulling out. When I see cuckmobiles like that one, I always get ready to brake and choose a line that will give me the maximum room to brake in a straight line.
>05:46
Looks to the side. Goes toward side of the road. Target fixates, tenses up, can't turn away. Brakes which is unhelpful. Goes onto grass / gravel and eats shit. Should have remembered to NOT turn the handlebars while looking sideways to stay in his lane. When he got close to the side, he could have just looked towards the road, counter-steered a bit and been fine.
>06:16
Muddy roads. Too much throttle, possibly in combination with looking to the side. Not much he could have done other than being more careful with the throttle or not riding in these conditions. Traction control would have helped.

Early apex, also looks like he doesn't know how to counter steer. Panic and hits the brake (that's why the camera is bobbing like that, he's braking and fighting the bike's urge to go straight). Target fixates into barrier. Learn how to corner. If you're going to brake, do it properly (in a straight line, with maximum force).
>07:53
Target fixates like a bitch, no counter steering at all. Probably because he wasn't confident, because he thought he was going too fast. Should have gone slower and/or learned to corner.
>08:09
Trail braking with the rear? Locks the rear in any case. Lets off when it locks but it's already broken out. Recovers traction, rights itself, kicks him off. Do not brake while leaned over.
>08:43
Does not know how to do slow turns. Does not expect cars to come around a blind corner. Does not expect oncoming cars to evade the old lady and therefore be in the middle of the road. Brakes while leaned over. Bike rights itself and goes straight into car. Should have slowed down more and stayed on the inside of the corner to begin with, and gotten ready to brake when he saw the lady or earlier.
>09:07
Accelerates when he sees the car accelerating. Should have braked. Hard to make the right call in that short time, especially when distracted by all the signs around. Car's fault.

I've got ~4k city riding miles on sport bikes already but I want to get something I can smack up while polishing my riding skills. Learning how to knee drag and stunt would be nice too and a pit bike, if that's what I'm looking for, could get me into off-road riding but I wouldnt have a way to bring it anywhere and I live in the concrete jungle of NYC. Something small would be nice to play with when I have friends (or girls) over though, but the main reason would be for my own learning.

I was looking at this cutie. ~700$ including shipping.

The part that broke wasn't BMW though.
Only BMW part that broke was a seal. Which isn't really uncommon and with a GS you don't have to care about them really as the forks aren't doing the suspension work.

It's fine that you think you're a good enough rider that you can't learn from other people's mistakes. There are plenty of noobs here who could benefit from watching these videos and understanding what it is that made those riders crash, and how to not repeat their mistakes. I'm only trying to help beginner riders. If you don't like it, all you have to do is click "hide post" three times, that's faster than bitching about it.

Do you think me so naive that I expect everyone to kiss my feet and hail me as the next Keith Code?
If I was a noob, and I came to /dbt/, I wouldn't want to ask about every single fucking clip in that video, if I wanted to learn something. This way, the information is there and whoever is interested can use it. Those who aren't, can simply ignore it.

>release clutch to friction point, creep forward a bit, give throttle, release clutch
>play with it throttle, Rev up a few times while clutching in

I'm like the first example, low revs and little noise. The other day I saw a guy on a 250 who was sitting at like 5k rpm while riding the clutch and creeping away which probably isn't the way to go.

Notably the epic green texting, caps lock fury, fields of strawmen, and needing to resort to personal attacks and overall anal anguish.
>>
>>17835315
250s stall so ridiculously easy he was probably compensating for that, the bike's lack of torque, and his own inexperience and lack of clutch control. It's definitely a more reassuring and smoother release to an extent.
>>
>>17835334
I literally only greentexted one line. I used caps lock for emphasis, rather than to indicate fury. The "personal attacks" were banter that you obviously can't handle and to which you decided to reply with "smug" anime pictures.
It's alright, I understand you must be frustrated about not being able to ride. I just want to understand what made you think it was a worthwhile use of your time to point out I was likely wasting mine trying to help others.
