i drive a v6 tiburon and i've noticed a few times when shifting up close to the redline there's like a barking sound as i put the clutch in, but it's coming from directly in front of me, and only happens from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th, but not from 1st or from 4th+

the car is mechanically sound and i have limited knowledge of car noises.

How do you choose a coilover?

Obviously I'm not going to get something like racelands, but I was wondering is there anything more to them than just camber, caster, damper and height adjustments?

I wouldn't go so far as to say that, but BC's I have on my 540i are indistinguishable in terms of feel, from the stock Msport suspension I had on it originally, with the bonus of being lighter, having adjustable damping rates and being able to drop it 2ins.

I did go with a higher Spring rate, I believe 12k in the front and 10k in the back, and swift springs and the ride is still comfy at 14clicks on the adjusters.

did you clean the rotors thoroughly before install? They are covered in cosmoline to prevent rusting on shelves. The squeaking should go away on its own after a while as the cosmoline burns off, but you should always clean your rotors before install.

>>17828250
could be that your pads were already pretty old before you were retarded. jack your car up and pull the tires off to check the brakes. google if you don't know how to do these things.

So... This fucker is stuck. After beating on it for a while, I rented a pickle fork and stuck it in there and beat on that for a while and have made zero progress. Ideas? I've wailed on it with a hammer, wailed on a pickle fork stuck in there with a hammer, and none of that has worked so far. Next step when I start tomorrow is heat the fuck out of it and wail on it with a hammer. Failing that, cut the stud off and drill it out. And failing that, buying a new pitman arm.

Need more info, as specific as possible pl0x. Does it happen just as you move the lever to get it into gear, when the gear is already starting to go in/engage, how loud it is, for how long it happens, high pitched or low pitched, does it seem to come from right side or left side or any other etc that you can provide, shyamalam

>>17826834
If I'm interpreting this right, you replaced all or most of the suspension bits on that corner of the car? In that case, sounds like bushings are binding, you may need the proper type(s) of grease(s) applied to the right spot(s)

In any case, really, things are rubbing and there's a lack of lubricity. See what conditions make the sound happen, searching that on the internet should help a good bit

>>17828096

>How hard is this to do?
Need spark. Got spark without ECU?
Is it throttle body injection, or multi-point fuel injection? If you don't have something like a throttle body injection, you'll need a place/manifold where to put carby and ensure equal amounts of air/fuel mixture get to cylinders

>>17828903
Don't know how bad the damage is, but you're trying to basically rebuild half a car, then swap engine and transmission, right? Easy, get some chassis design books, then some books on car collision repair, then some on welding and fabricating, then something on swapping engines, though that's not so much something you learn from a book, as much as make a comprehensive checklist

There's a LOT to learn if you want to do it properly. I'd try to find someone who can unfuck the car a bit first, then have a hand at it, if it's me who has to do it

Godspeed, etc
>>
What to do if your gearbox gets notchy? Occasional grinding? Is it ever anything besides synchros? What happens when synchros get worn? Are your only options to 1) drop the transmission, or 2) deal with it? Also, how the fuck does a stationary car grind when going to reverse? Why?

Skyline wheels bro here, thanks for the advice. I might have a look at Sparco. I just mostly need something that is durable for a daily driver the gets a little dirt as well. I'm not afraid with slightly weeby looking wheels since it's a Skyline and that's kind of order of the day with a car like that. I mostly don't like the wheels I have on it now because they look more like they're made for a Commodore or something. Ideally I'd prefer to get something black or maybe alloy.

Thanks for the option regardless I'll have a look into Sparco.

Important question here.

Senario: buying a 10k car, paying 5k down, financing the remaining 5k.

If im paying 5k down will the dealers still try to finance me for the full 10k and THEN take a 5k payment? Or should they take the 5k down off the total price of the car first and then only finance 5k...?

Whats the correct procedure? I do not want to be bamboozled.

Have them take the 5 off first.

If they fincance for the 10 and take your 5 after the principle of the loan is 10, which means you'd pay more in intrest down the line

Granted if the term of the loan is short enough then it shouldn't matter

>>
>>17830310
Yeah the standard should be that they pull the down off first, and if they aren't doing that I'd think it's pretty damn shady.

The whole point of a down payment is that you're borrowing less than you initally would, so you don't need to pay interest on it.

If they try to have you finance for 10k when you put 5 down then they're trying to collect intrest on money you didn't borrow.

>>
>>17829548
Most reverses have no synchros, you can change the fluid which may or may not help, and to change the synchros the trans will have to be dropped and the case opened to replace them.

Other possibilities include a weak or leaking master or slave that's not pushing hard enough, and old brake fluid thats absorbed water.

I'd say buy one and take it to a mechanic. Typically they're a pain in the ass to get out and if you aren't careful you could Dame the new o2. And they are usually pretty expensive depending on the car. If you wanna tackle it then get some penetrating oil and a 22mm wrench and try.

>>
>>17830651
Just take it it to oreilly or AutoZone. They will let you borrow a code reader. I'm gonna assume you have 4 o2 sensors ( bank 1&2 upstream and downstream) the downstream ones should be pretty easy to get to. Upstream (before the cat) might be harder.
>>
>>17830621
I go to oreilly personally. Everytime I go to vatozone zone they don't know what the hell they're talking about and try to give me the wrong part even though I go in with a part number or the part. v6 bark man here

it happens when putting the clutch in and without touching the gear stick, seems to come from the right side of the engine and is about as loud as the engine & the same sorta pitch as the revs at that point, but a couple of times i have noticed it at lower (2.5k - 3.5k) revs, but it stays the same volume & pitch. there is no torque steer or anything else that happens when this does that makes me worry *too* much about it, it's just a mystery at this point.

I own a 1/2" drive torque wrench and a handful of adapters. A 3/8" drive would be handy, but for torquing shit like lug nuts to 90+ ft lbs or more, the extra length on the 1/2" is nice. And if it comes down to it, you can usually rent torque wrenches from the local parts store.

I use a 3/8 drive but a 1/2 is probably more versatile if you get adapters

Just go whoever gives you the best service. The same manufacturers service all these stores so its not like you're going to get some store brand thats superior. Duralast, Brakebest, Autocraft are almost made by all the same people. Duralast transmission filters are essentially fram filters with a duralast label.

I've got one of these shitboxes and I've got a few questions.

Once you start it it idles fine, but after driving it for a bit or even just giving it a bit of gas and letting go the RPMs drop and don't quite return to normal.
I'm assuming it's a sticky throttle body, that would be the easiest thing to check and try to fix, right?

12V phone chargers and so on don't sit in the cigarette lighter, how much of a hassle would it be to replace it with another one that's a tighter fit?
At most it should be a matter of de-soldering a couple of wires I hope.

The roof antenna is damaged and the seal is starting to rot badly though it's not leaking yet. Are antennas universal or do I need to look for a replacement for my model specifically, and am I going to have to remove the roof lining to undo the antenna?
>>

personal preference and who's closer, I know the people in Advance better than the other stores, but O'reilly's can some times have uncommon stuff actually stocked to their shelves, and easier to get a hold of.

What does /o/ think of these plugs? My Miata started idling kinda rough and vibrating a lot more than normal. It does smoke a little after sitting a bit. From what I'm reading online, it looks like it's burning oil. I have to add coolant and oil every other week to it.

Depends on the car sometimes its matter of popping it out from the console, and sometimes you have to take the entire console out to get to them.

Odds are if its loose then you may just be able to pull it out and rebend the indents that hold your power fob in.

If its a roof antenna its probably OEM specfic, at least the seal will be.

I know for sure my rear main seal is shot and I think my coolant reroute is leaking a little so I was thinking that's were most of the fluid was going. I have had a little bit of milky oil on the dip stick when the oil gets a little low though.

What kind of suspension I can install on a Miata so I can increase its height from the interior? There's a really big bump at the entrance of my garage that always scrapes the lower part of the car.

I pulled my hand break at an intersection to lock up my rear wheels and slide a bit, and didn't counter-steer. The car went more sideways than I thought it would, and at the end of the turn and slide, I was traveling straight, and I didn't have to turn the wheel to correct the direction of travel.

Does that mean I might've pulled the hand break too hard and or for too long? Does it mean I might've pulled the hand break too late? Does it mean that I might have turned in too hard?

They can't afford to make cars at those prices. It's cheaper to produce a low number hypercar than a medium number of super cars or sports cars especially.

To make your money back on super high manufacturing costs you'd have to produce and sell a shitload for a number of years probably and that's very risky. Companies like Toyota already have massive revenues and manufacturing assets. Tesla can't even turn a profit with the best marketing in the industry.

They can't compete at the prices they would need to sell them in the US for.

Coilovers can be seen as a "suspension upgrade", depending on your choice of coilovers (some are better than others, like tein vs raceland). They allow totally adjustable ride height, up or down, though usually down for most people. As people who're looking to raise their vehicle use other more reliable means. Weight difference is negligible, but ride quality is what should be taken into account here. As it is different brand by brand. Downsides usually include a stiffer ride, however higher end coilovers have dampeners to help with this. And, people who are installing coilovers to go lower are usually looking for the stiffer ride, because, you know, race car.
>>
>>17839415
Coil overs are direct strut/shock suspension replacements that allow you to adjust the ride height and front camber at the very least, and various damping options on more expensive brands.

They're seen a cheaper alternative than buying a full race suspension setup, and can be tuned to improve handling, or in the case of stance used to slam and drastically alter the camber a car has.

How good they are depend on what brand you buy. Typically they are lighter than the Shocks/Struts they replace, the only major downside is they have to be rebuilt sooner than a stock shock setup would, 10,000 miles versus 20-30k miles an OEM setup would need replacing.

Certain luxury models, and sport cars require shocks and struts to be replaced much sooner. Its also very likely that your shocks are worn although someone unfamiliar with the difference between worn and new wouldn't notice as well.

>>17839511
The damping units themselves have to be replaced. The springs and all the other hardware that come with the set don't however.

Follow up question, is it going to be hard to change out my master cylinder? Two local auto shops gave me an estimate of 700 dollars. What a fucking rip off. My replacement part can cost anywhere from 60-120 dollars and I watched a few youtube videos today and it looks doable - i just need that flared wrench.
>>
>>17839563
When I bought my first car it had a bad master cylinder. Did the swap myself in less than an hour. Bleeding the brakes is the worst part.
>>
>>17839563
Super fucking easy if you have any mechanical inclination whatsoever.
>bleed brakes
>unbolt brake lines
>unbolt master cylinder
>replace
>fill with fluid
>bleed air
>...?
>profit

Can't be that much more difficult no matter what car you drive. Definitely not a $700 job
>>
>>17839563
>What a fucking rip off.

You don't know how to replace it yourself but yet you think its a ripoff?

Anyways depending on where its at it can be difficult, in addition to the fact that you'll have at least a couple of hours to spend time bleeding the system, which means you'll have to have the car on jacks, and have a self bleeding kit, or vacuum pump.
>>
>>17839588
>which means you'll have to have the car on jacks, and have a self bleeding kit, or vacuum pump.

I can't just bench bleed it? And yes after watching the videos I think its worth doing it myself rather than spend 700 dollars.
>>

Yes you can, you don't need any of that shit. Anon is being a prententious faggot. DIY, anon. Learning is important. Read your car manual. Only go to the shop when you've hit a wall and shit has hit the fan.

ummmm He'll have to get to the bleeder valves on the calipers and I doubt his body and hands are going to be small enough to get that shit if the cars on the ground.......

And good luck getting the air out of the system with no bleeder kit.

So, for reasons I don't fully understand, my jeep will occasionally grind if I try to put it in reverse. I know reverse isn't synchronized but no amount of double clutching or fiddling with the gearstick will stop this. Sometimes if I put it in 3rd or 5th then very quickly slap it in reverse before the gears start spinning it will go in smooth. Other times it just slides right in. Sometimes it won't want to go in first, either, but other times it's buttery smooth.
Very rarely (as in it happened twice then never again) it didn't wanna let go of a gear. It's almost like the clutch isn't engaging/disengaging properly. If I use excessive force on the pedal/clutch kick this doesn't happen. The clutch doesn't slip or shudder and the tranny shifts smooth while driving otherwise.

A fully adjustable proper traditional Race setup for my car would have been 3grand plus Vs the 1 grand I paid for BC's

Recommended rebuild is a 10k although you can get to 20k but you risk of blowing them doing that.

An average car's suspension will last much longer.
>>
>>17839863
The only real way to avoid this is by clutching in putting it in another gear then into reverse, this typically will line up the dogs to where they'll mesh.

And having not go in occasionally is normal however not letting go of the gear maybe a sign that you need to check your master/slave and lines for leaks.

I haven't owned a turbo vehicle and I have a few queries.
>Do turbo engines have a regular air intake or is all the air sucked in through the compressor?
I seem to recall that the turbo is in addition to the regular intake but the more I think about it the less necessary this seems.
>Where is the air filter in a turbo engine?
Occasionally you'll see a turbo with a pod filter attached but usually the compressor is just sitting there. Is there a filter after the intercooler?
>What happens if the turbo sucks in water?
Nearly all off-road vehicles today are turbo diesel and usually have a snorkel for the air intake fitted to allow deeper water crossings. If the turbo is still in the same position won't the turbo just suck in water and ruin the engine?

>>
>>17844141
>How long do you think it's got before it kaplows on me?

Honestly there's now way of telling, without taking the cover, I've had spider gears explode out of the blue with no warning.

The only other way to see if anythings wrong is feel how hot the diff is after a good drive. If it feels like its about or close to burning your hand its probably fucked.
>>
>>17844152
Well if I'm lucky I only fucked up the clutch packs (ford 8.8) and maybe this'll give me an excuse to rebuild and throw 4.10s in the back end, or get a new car, who knows.
>>
>>17844161
Incidentally, I had a 8.8 and had to rebuild it after said spider gears when awol.

I threw a new ring, pinion and carrier in and good to go. I think it came out to about 700 for tools and everything.

I need a new used car and I'm currently narrowing my decision between a honda civic vs a ford focus

both seem pretty comparable in terms of mpg and a bunch of other crap, but what's most important to me is:

who's going to need more replacement parts before 150K miles?
which one is more likely to devolve into a vibrating mess sooner?
who has better turn radius?
also I'm considering a hatchback but I don't know if that will actually improve my situation with a car

lets assume the head unit (thats what they call it) is made by a company who's name rhymes with "Hardon Karma"

if you can connect to the head unit either via serial connection (115200 bps) or over ethernet (ip 192.168.1.1)

you just log in with root, and you can probably guess the password if there even is one

once in, kill anything that looks like a NAV app
