/CCG/ - Classic Car General

Can't think of an edition, edition.

>Cars are considered classic at 25 years old but they need to have a certain something about them to be an actual classic

>Everybody has their own taste, enter if it's of age or rarity, European, Russian, Japanese or North American

>Post your classic, your work on it, your hackery, and get advice

>Any and all discussion about classics welcome, but may not necessarily generate responses, don't get butthurt.

>Classic shitbox > modern shitbox

>Rust is a bitch, and not for the faint of heart;

>You will inevitably spend twice your budget, no exceptions unless you mint your own hash coins.

What is the best way to remove old seam sealer? It is basically impossible to grind it off, since it just gets smeared everywhere. I have been using a wire brush and carb cleaner and it seems to be coming off ok, but was wondering if there is a faster, easier way.

Winters are so-so, work is close enough to ride a bicycle if the car is broken or the roads are freshly salted, I need to drive 100 miles about 25 times a year, and I have absolutely no mechanical experience. Classic daily driver y/n?

What should i expect for performance/mpg with an I6 3spd mustang (65-69)? Will it be able to keep up on modern roads?

Alternatively, if i cant get a mustang, im shooting for YJ to nerd out and make it a jurassic park jeep.
>>
>>17820002
The engine will be a dog and because it's a 3 speed the final drive ratio will be ass. It'll probably scream on the highway and since it's an I6 that's not that good.
>>
>>17820001
If you have no passion for it then no. Yes if you do, you can always go cruising around in it when not working.
>>
>>17820002
I6 mustangs came with 2.83 rears, so I'd say you could get double digit MPGs driving conservatively. Install an overdrive and you could further increase your economy

Don't expect any performance out of it whatsoever, beaners in shitty honda civics will pass you in a hearbeat.
>>
>>17820015
>>17820022
Intersting.. i didnt expect speed, but mpg was. A while ago, ive read that you can get 18-20mpg with them. Coworker had a 59 F100 with the I6 and 3 on the tree and got 15mpg
>>
>>17820051
It really is a matter of how you drive it. You'll probably burn more gas trying to keep it at a modern road speed then you would if it had a V8.

On carb'd cars the number of venturis and the amount of throttle determines MPG more then displacement I've found, not to say that displacement isn't a factor. That said my Corvair gets like 24 mpg and it's between 3-5k all of the time.
>>
>>17820080
>24mpg
holy shit, what rear do you have and what tranny?
>>
>>17820089
not sure the rear end, you had like two options for that year but it's not original. Lets just say top speed is about 65 mph, it's a 4 speed as well.

Plenty of late 80s cars are reliable enough for your needs but be wary of cracked hoses, leaks, electrical gremlins etc. Preferably something simple, low optioned, comfortable and low mileage. Japanese or European preferred in my experience

Is that a beetle? The thing about air cooled engines is you'll never know when they overheat. The only medium that can overheat is the oil, at about 570 degrees. You could have cooked the engine and never knew it happened.

>>
>>17820828
No, not really.
>>
>>17820828
Can't say I've heard of that before. Sounds like fuel from the accelerator pump nozzle is squirting gas onto the plate
>>
>>17820834
You know what could cause that? High fuel pressure? Sticky throttle?
>>
>>17820845
The throttle would have to have been cracked open if that was the case, unless the shot was turbo delayed.

Stuck float, high fuel pressure overcoming the needle and seat, possibly a gasket failure.

Personally I'd take the Imperial over the Cadillac any day.

Today I finished last week's project of getting my 1987 XJ6 started. Put 5 gallons of gas in the right side tank, got the fuel pump working, then found I had water in the tank. Ended up pumping out about 1.5 gallons until I got to pure gasoline. This was bottle #4. Next weekend I clean it then get it to a trans shop to get the Borg Warner 66 rebuilt. Despite being a mechanic myself I don't have the time to fix the transmission myself and don't want the car sitting anymore.
>>
>>17823400
Have you ever done anything to that old Cadillac though? Or whatever it is, I can't remember exactly
>>
>>17823418
Besides start it occasionally, no. Haven't had the funds needed to start a complete restoration on it. I want to get the smaller projects, like the Jaguar, done and gone before starting that. It'll give me the money and the space needed.
>>
>>17823296
Make that a '68.
What is it with me and 1968?
Also, it is NOT a fastback.
I'm just a fucking idiot.

It looked like it had the 289 in it.

>>
Really beginning to think that the front axle re-gearing on my bronco is going to be a nightmare on the ground.

Has anybody done it before? Should I just pull the axle?
>>
>>17823400
They're very different cars for different purposes; the Imperial handles far better than a car of its size has any right to, so it's far more fun to take on the twisty roads and winding hills; plus, I have a moderately aggressive sound to the exhaust with a proper dual setup, yet it looks unassuming.

The Cadillac, however, makes a statement everywhere I go. Driving it around Texas with the top down is great. People wave, yell, and love it. It's so ostentatious that it makes me feel like a celebrity when I drive it; granted, I only had it Sunday, but the entire 4-hour trip I took to bring it home I had so many people admiring it that I lost count.
>>
Huh, a 2dr 1970 that *isn't* 20k+ https://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/cto/d/1970-dodge-coronet-440-coupe/6293446084.html

I hate to tell you but you probably won't find a 4 door Coronet ever.
>>
Been driving the Comanche around for the last several days, been having a fucking blast. Sure would be nice if I could install the trim or if the floor mats wasn't forming a tunnel over the hole in the floorboard directing hot drivetrain air directly at my calf, but it's fun as shit to cruise around in and haul shit with it.
>>
>>17823772
Isn't that the same model year of Cadillac that Kennedy was shot in?
>>
>>17825015
That thing got fucked. 6k way too high
>>
>>17825070
No it's not.
They made less than 15k Coronets that year including the Superbee.

I can say without a doubt this is probably your only chance this lifetime to get in a Coronet without paying 5 digits.

You can easily find new quarter panels, suspension components, anything really for Mopars.
I've seen you in this thread often. Not to be a dick but i think you're a little naive if you ever think you'll find a four door 1970 Coronet. They don't even have production numbers for four doors. They probably totaled less than 500.
This isn't Ford or Chevy, Sometimes Chrysler made a fistful of one car model and then stopped and it's usually their most interesting cars.

6k is absolutely a steal considering it's nothing to put whatever engine you want in a B-body and replacement steel costs less than a decent computer.
>>
>>17825059

>>

>>
>>17825336
I'm not mad, i just want to see you finally get what you want but this isn't the 80's anymore, or even the mid 2000's. These cars get scarcer by the day and you already missed the boat.

>but i think youd be getting a new frame for it.
You don't need a new frame.

I never said you didn't but you're looking for a needle in a needle stack.
>>
>>17825348
Sorry, i just got off a 24hr watch and im still on duty, im kinda irritable.

Im just saying, from what i can see in the pics, it looks like it got hit from behind. Combine that with new york and mopar rust issues, that thing could be gone. Bow granted, if you check it out and its just some dents, ill find you and beat you with jumper cables for not getting it.
>>
>>17825451
Well if it sat in a garage there's little chance the floors are out right now.
Most often they rot because the cowl gets clogged up with leaves and water starts leaking in through the air vents or the winsheild wiper seals crank and water skips the cowl completely. it needs work but it's probably in okay shape besides the rear.

Has anyone here attempted a C6 to E4OD swap? I hear the bell housing is the same. E4OD has a 4th gear and overdrive so it would be a pretty good upgrade in my eyes.
>>
>>17825650
E4OD is a C6 with a lockup converter and an overdrive grafted on. Fortunately they were found behind 460s all the way up until Ford stopped producing the 460.

It's also electronically controlled so you'll have to steal the transmission control unit from the donor truck.
Another thing to consider is you'll probably have to change a frame crossmember and chop up your driveshaft.
>>
>>17826245
From what I've read so far the E4OD is longer than the C6. It's also a bit fatter so I'd need to do some gentle massaging. Since my truck is a 4x4 I was wondering if the transfer case would bolt on to the E4OD or would I use the transfer case from the donor?
>>
>>17825348
>I've seen you in this thread often. Not to be a dick but i think you're a little naive if you ever think you'll find a four door 1970 Coronet.
>I'm not mad, i just want to see you finally get what you want

Nah I'd left for work after posting the craigslist link , so that's someone else. Though I did notice the rear end damage, hopefully that's just body. Thanks for input though.

Either way though, that's all the way in NYC, I'm in NC, and I don't quite have 6k anyway. Maybe it'll still be there when I save up more, but it might not. (Though I suppose NYC is better than the usual "every convention, artist, etc you wanna see is in California or England" that I usually get)
>>
>>17825348
Also! If I DO save up for that car, and it is still there, and without one closer to my preference appearing....how difficult is a V-8 swap in a B-body? Like, besides the engine and maybe the transmission case and maybe exhaust, what equipment is different on the 6cyl cars?
>>
>>17827089
It's EZPZ. A complete engine will need an appropriate bellhousing and engine mounts.
Maybe make sure your rear end is up to the task.
I imagine it's a 727 but if it's a 904 you might want to consider getting a 727 if you go b/rb engine.

At work I just use a torch to cut the threaded part off then blast straight down into the metal on the balljoint, it comes out eventually, just try not to torch too much of the Pitman arm.

Have to do that every now and then when hammering on it does nothing

Yeah, it seems heating it way the fuck up was the way to go. Jammed a pickle fork in there after holding the propane on it for a good few minutes and whacked it a couple of times and it popped right out. I may not have even needed to go and buy the new mini sledge, but whatever. More tools is always good. I'm just hoping at this point that the new drag link and all other linkages fixes the play I had in the steering. Turning the wheel, it took a moment before the drag link moved with the pitman arm, so new parts *should* fix that.

I'd say 6-8 for something that doesn't have much work done to it but is still a fairly solid car that runs and drives.

Around 10-15 for an older restoration or nice original condition.

15-20 for a turn key nice driver with lots of recent work.

20-30 for a full blown resto.

Add 15% if it's a 4 speed.

Well, today has been rather shitty...

The 78 broke down on me, and while in another state no less.
>some back story for those who care
I have a very unusual truck, not in the sense that the vehicle itself is rare, but the equipment. 1978 F150 F150 300 inline 6 with a 'Town & Country' 4 speed OD transmission. The transmission really only has 3 gears, and the 4th is overdrive. In the late 70s ford made an effort to have their list trucks and vans get better gas mileage, and attempted to do so by installing transmissions out of the ford granadas at the time.... and they were terrible... can't tow anything, but I get 18 mpg in a 40 year old rig.
Anyways, a while back, I threw the syncros on 1st and 2nd gear, and lost some teeth on 1st and 3rd. Because of the rarity / shit tines of this transmission, replacement was not an option, and doing it myself was not happening, although I do run an automotive shop. There was only one guy in town who would touch the thing, and I paid him a decent amount of money to rebuild the damn thing. All new internals.
That was 3 months ago. Apart from a couple hiccups when I first got it back, everything has been fine, and I've put about 400 miles on it since it was 'fixed'. Today, while in another state, the goddamned thing fucking banged out of 2nd, and became stuck in nuetra while on a 4 lane, one way road in town. Unable to put it into gear with the shifter, I crawled underneath and physically put it into 2nd gear while stuck in traffic, to limp it off the road at 20mph. Ended up having to tow it home across state lines with a hefty tow bill, even at my shops rate.

So, in the end, I'm trying to figure out how I need to handle this tomorrow. I don't want to be 'that guy' who blames everything on the last person who touched it,(I deal with those people every day) and I know it's an old piece of shit, but goddammit, it's my pice of shit and the damn thing didn't even last 300 miles since it was rebuilt...
Any suggestion would be appreciated... my mind is a mess today
>>
>>17834330
If it hasn't lasted that long, how would it not be the guys fault for a bad rebuild?
Does he not have any kind of warranty? I'd be pissed and bringing it right back to him ASAP
>>
>>17834330
So what actually went out?
Also, what was it like with your syncros going out? Was there whining while in gear?

'6 month' hand written warranty....

But, like I said, I run a shop in town, and he runs another shop down the road a ways. So, he did it as a bit of a favor to me and less of a retail-customer oriented deal with printed recites and such.

And yes, I'm certain it's some fault of his.
When I originally got it back, he had inserted one of the new syncros in backwards on the shaft, causing it to become stuck in 3rd gear. I found this out before even installing it.
At that pint I was at a fucking loss for words, given the fact that he rebuilt it, and didn't even check to see if it went through all the gears correctly! I got on the phone with him right then, he insisted I was doing something wrong, I drove back down to him where he looked at it for a minute, and finally fussed up that he made a mistake. Took him 5 hours to take it apart and put it back together correctly before I got it back again... after that, it has been fine, and I have shrugged it off, but now this...
>>
>>17834394
No synchros...
So, not whining exactly, but nothing to ease it into or out of gear. Like driving an old semi truck. Having to Rev match perfectly to get into gear, lots of grinding at times, popping out of gear violently, ect.... it was 'driveable' I suppose, but goddamn it was difficult and stressfull
>>
>>17834411
Well when you do get the trans to the guy, don't act like an angry cunt, even if you are pissed.
We all know that no one wants that and it doesn't get you anywhere
>>
>>17834411
what >>17834458 said.

To add to it just go in there and say "yo, shit broke, figure out why." But, y'know, tell him about the synchros and whatnot.

A) rebuild the 302 in it
B) Swap a junkyard 302
C) Swap in an I6 and get new mounts and all for it.

Sounds like my luck with my locally rebuild TH350. Was fucking golden for about 30k miles, now suddenly after a rear-end being rebuilt it's began puking fluid out of the breather on the top of the case while sitting parked for a few hours after driving, no matter how low the fluid gets. It's also leaking from the tail shaft, front pump seal, pan, and speedo gear housing. Still shifts fine most of the time, but has become a bit...finnicky.

Yes.

I don't see the point with turbo exhaust. That would make sense if you ran a supercharger.

Okay, called about it just now. Guy runs a towing service, so that is convenient. Says it was last on the registered for 2012, guy passed away and the lady remarried and it sat in the garage, only got around to working on cleaning the garage now. They pushed it out and called the guy and had it towed away. No fuel pressure, but its rust free. Rats nest under the hood, but didn't get into the interior

I need a ride to go look at it so I'll check it out tomorrow and it works out well since the guy runs a towing service lel.

Your first mod should be putting a decent non-shit motor in that car like a carb'd 350 with bolt-ons or something. My friend had an IROC-Z he used to talk lots of shit to me about until I waxed his ass by literally twice the length of my tractor trailer in a 94 Probe GT with the hatch open held up by 3 bicycles dangling off the back, it was so bad he ended up selling the car for an 84 crossfire Vette convertible which I also promptly waxed by only a truck length but at least he looked cool this time around and that Vette was super-super-clean, I was a little jealous honestly. It was a virgin convertible stick model and it had no rust and low miles, even had the factory tape player

1960-1965 rancheros are based on the falcon line, after that they are based on the fairlane line.
I like them, problem is i they has some issues with gas tank leakage on days due to how ford made them at least 1960-65 did. Not sure on the later ones.

As for the 170s, great reliable beater engines, easy to fix to. But there not speed machines get to 0-60 in about 18 seconds.

Also is the one your looking at painted orange or red.
>>
>>17859584
Given that second sentence a retry.

>I like them, problem is they have some issues with the gas tank leakage on hot days, due to how ford made them.
>>
>>17859584
Red.
How does the gas tank leak? Where its welded together or where the lines enter?

I know it wont be anything on my camaro for speed, but as long as i can cruise at 65/70mph with out killing the engine, im happy. I had a 66 dart that did just fine with a slant 6
>>
>>17859628
Nice, that confirms the info I found online about the 170s being orange or red. Also it might 200 special but that a slim chance.

As with the leak issues, I was going to try and explain it, but I rather just point you to where I found the info awhile ago back.

Took the bird out for drive after my dad said she was driving like she wanted to stall after putting gas in her, drive twice around the block, noticed the feel felt similler to when we had bad plugs, said "fuck" because I don't want to change plugs in 90+ plus heat.

open the hood after parking, turns out one of the disturber cap wires was unplugged, going to start her up in a bit to prevent any bad firing of the cylinder with to much gas in in it.

Pretty happy to know she can run fairly well on 5 cylinders out of 6, since shes so old.
>>
>>17860035
Thats what it feels like sometimes
>>
>>17860275
Yea, not much you can really do about it if these none around besides wait.

Also after drove the falcon around a bit more and I very happy to say it ran smooth as hell, and I didn't see any leaks. That lucus stuff really fuckin works. It was fairly noticeable difference driving it now compared to before
>>
>>17860381
What was wrong with the falcon?
>>
>>17860381
she had been leaking since I got her, only when she warmed up however, used lucus for transmission, haven't leaked since, transmission is nice. Bought the same stuff but for engine oil, since she was still losing engine oil, I haven't seen a leak yet will not really know till tomorrow.

Out side of that my dad went to put some gas in it , since he used most of it cursing with my mother. Said after he filled it brought it home is drove like she wanted to cut out, he checked the engine bay but his eyes are old and didn't see anything wrong. I checked it later after put some of the lucus engine oil in, and noticed that one of the disturber cap wires was out slightly. Plugged it it back in drove it a hour later, and she was purring so nicely. I wanted to keep driving but if I did i would use up all the gas he put in. And I am trying to save some money for other hobbies at the moment.
