Did you guys get the 3rd gen Grand Vitara? Basically the last proper 4x4 compact SUV, and reasonably competent to boot. Global markets got a 1.9TDi option supplied from Renault, but it requires timing belt changes at 45,000 miles, so isn't the cheapest option even if for the fuel economy. My pick would be the gas four cylinder.

Fuck the Jimny is a champ. Live front and rear, coils all round, M13A is speed/density with no MAF to foul and timing chain driven, only sips the fuel and is surprisingly competent off road.
