Octane academy edition
>What is a "Hot Hatch"?
A Hot Hatch is a manufacturer produced, performance oriented variant of a standard hatchback, designed for improved handling, increased top speed, acceleration and generally enhance the driving experience.

>Are all Hot Hatches FWD?
No. Whilst most Hot Hatches are FWD, some are AWD or even RWD.

>Isn't FWD shit?
No. Just because you can't get the arse out by stamping on the accelerator doesn't mean you can't have fun.

>Aren't Hot Hatches just for Europoors?
No; Hot Hatches have been a thing for the US since the 90s, took a dip in the mid 00s and are gaining momentum again.
>>
>missed out on my chance to do Octane Academy for free
Fuck my life
>>
>>17814626
I drove an old Chevelle once. It had racing stripes and everything. Does that count as a "Hot Hatch?"
>>
>>17814626
Also Mountune is having a labor day sale.
Code is LD17.
>>
>What is hhg?
A bunch of losers got rolled by some sales shit and bought a smelly overpriced bad FWD shitbox that they can't do anything with.

>Can you have fun in a FWD car?
No. Capital words, more white people bullshit. Muh reality distortion field. No. If I just say No, and capitalize the N, it makes me look all intelligent. By the way, I don't have to provide any counterpoint, I can just say No.

>If someone asks a question and there is a rumor, does that mean it is true?
No. I mean yes, that's why they're there in the first place.

>Am I allowed to join your secret FWD IRC circlejerk club?
No. We're all full, but please want to join it really bad so we can ban you. By the way mine has been in the garage for 6 years, wanted to take it for a spin the other day and the battery wouldn't start. This is OK because this is not about cars, but pretending to be better than you for made up reasons which I can't really get into right now. Let me just say No, No, with Capital N a few more times, No.
>>

>The seats aren't that good
>The stock sound system blows
>It could use a 6th gear

Hmm, might get a symposer delete.

Have any FiST owners here tried getting rid of the sound symposer? Do you prefer it with or without? Might help me hear my exhaust better with windows up.

>>17816240
Just in general.

I actually prefer the focus st over the fiesta. It's way more practical and doesn't feel like it was made by Fischer Price.

I wasn't very impressed with either honestly. My old 2005 srt4 was a better driver's car, and slightly faster stock IIRC.
>>
>>17816264
This is why I went with the abarth instead of a FiST. The fiesta might be objectively better from a numbers standpoint, but the Fiat is just a note engaging car to drive. Plus smol.

That's odd, just made me like it more.

It might literally be Ford's most reliable car. I've picked up the Consumer Reports magazine, and the only black dot on it was "transmission." But you can't get the shitty automatic in the ST, just a decent Getrag 6 speed manual, so it's not an issue. Someone on the Fiesta ST forums has 281,000km on his (half of them modded) and has only done basic preventative maintenance.

Thanks. Sciroccos look like neat cars, but we obviously don't get them in the US so I have no idea how they drive. I imagine just like my gti though.

Already planning on heading back. Hopefully for the vw meet in the spring. Wish we had even a taste of the mountains in Minnesota.

It is a shame the summer is winding down. I'll probably get a high flow cat as my last fun mod this year, and hopefully get one or two more track days in.

HHHHHNNNNNGGGGG I'm this fucking close to pulling the trigger on a slightly used FiST. It's so damn tempting. Only issue is that I could get a used Cooper S for nearly half the price of the FiST. They're supposed to be unreliable, but the price difference should/could/might even that out?
Fuck I hate spending huge amounts of money. Makes decisions impossible for me.

Is the chebby spark EV a hot hatch?

>200hp
>400lbs/ft
>near 50/50 weight distribution
>low CoG because electric
>functional aero kit
>direct drive
>stiffened suspension
>disc brakes only
>grippy seats

the only downside is the tires; they are low grip eco tires. Its size and power source can go either way depending.
>>
>>17833081
Both more expensive to buy and maintain.

By your logic you shouldn't buy either of those because the Viper and Corvette exist.

I just picked up a mk4 gti and idk if its just me but do you find the pedal placement terrible for heel-toeing like I do? also coming from a car with no sunroof the gti feels really top heavy in the corners

Yeah, it took me a long time to get comfortable with heel toe in the R32. I would say 85-90% I can match just about perfectly now, but it took a lot of practice on my mk6 gti which has a floor accelerator and my sim wheel. It just comes down to either twisting your leg more, or having big enough shoes that you can use each side of your foot, which one of my instructors told.me is the 'proper way'. They could be a tiny bit closer, and the accelerator needs to be a bit longer and to make it perfect. Also, the sunroof does weigh like 70lbs so you can definitely notice it. With some good suspension it would barely matter though since the mk4 is pretty pigfat. I of course have the driveshaft, haldex, and rear dif weighing me down even more, so eh, whatever.

>chebby spark EV

Those specs are wrong.

The 2016 (last model year) is rated at 140 HP, 327 ft/lbs.

It was tested 0-60 in 7.9 seconds. Thats average at best and certainly not quick.

Top speed is 90 mph so no matter what you'll be at a huge disadvantage speed wise.

"disc brakes" only isnt a feature lol.... thats fucking standard. my 1998 explorer had 4 wheel disc brakes....

Verdict, No, its not a hot hatch. Its an EV. Dont try your luck against any real hot hatches and please dont take it on the backroads. Seriously, its not a performance car.
>>
>>17835042
The specs aren't wrong, they're just for the older model. Originally it had a 21 kWh battery but that was replaced with a 19 kWh battery in later models

The hatch that ill never own
>>
>>17833134
Depends on your definition. If a hot hatch is fast on the track then no. The spark EV has vastly improved performance over the normal version, but it is still a street car. EVs dont track well because of topspeed issues with electric drivetrain. Not only do EVs have low topspeed, they also build up alot of heat when at top speed. The spark is great for curvy back roads and is definitely a warm hatch, but its poor trackability may convince people it is not a hot hatch.
>>
>>17834812
Like 210 awhp. It's certainly not fast, but quick enough to have fun with on the back roads and the twisties
>>
>>17835917

>>
>>17836114
thats fast enough, in europe 210whp is fast for a people car. My rocco is 180hp 300poundtorque
>>
>>17835649
There more to a hot hatch than pure HP/torque numbers. But it doesn't matter because all Sparks are slow (140 hp).

Its not the battery capacity that determines HP man.... they are all 140 HP. I saw a review for a 2013 model with 130 hp/400 ft/lbs but it seems that most if not all production models have 327.

Here: 21 KW battery:

http://www.caranddriver.com/chevrolet/spark-ev

High torque is great but shit tires and really low HP fuck it over hard. Im sure the torque is heavily limited at lower speeds. Basically its diesel tier power.
>>
>>17837313
I don't think you understand how an EV drivetrain works. Batteries do determine horsepower because they are literally the source of power for the drivetrain. kWh is how many kilowatts(power) can be released during an hour. Powerasically torque•rpm, which is how much force the crank turns with, and how fast the crank is turning. Motors are not engines; engines convert energy into power (chemical energy of gasoline into mechanical power at the crank), while motors transfer power between forms (electric power to mechanical power). It is the battery that converts energy to power; a motor power rating is how much power it can transfer.

How the traditional and EV drivetrain supply power is also very different. An electric motor has constant torque, and since power is the product of torque and RPM, more power to the motor results in a linear increase of RPMs. This allows a single gear ratio to be used, with the ratio selected for having its RPM range be for wheel speed. An internal combustion engine relies on compression, and since compressive force of a fluid is non-linear, it has a torque curve. Because torque fluctuates, the RPMs are in a narrow band as power increases. Multiple gears are needed to keep the engine in its RPMs while while wheel RPM increases. The spark EV does have 200hp because it uses the same motor as the bolt. The motor is rated at 140 because it is limited. When the motor receives 140hp from the batteries it shuts off(because it is an electric system, the motor shuts off and restarts many times a second to limit horse power).

Electric motors cannot limit their torque, the spark EV always makes 400lb/ft indifferent of the RPM. The reason why the tires aren't always spinning out is because of the power delivery profile that controls the rate of power increase from the battery depending on vehicle speed. The 21kWh battery can provide 200hp for the motor. Good tires are the only physical improvement, and are not prerequisite of a hot hatch
>>
>>17838527
Also here is proof that the power of the two batteries is different.

The motor is the same amongst 19 and 21 kWh models, but the gear ratio changed. The same motor means engine torque is the same amongst the two cars, with the different gear ratios providing the different torque figures. If both 19 and 21 kWh versions were the same power, then the 19 model should have a higher topspeed, as by having less torque it would have more rpm per same power. However the two versions of the spark EV have the same RPM range shown by topspeeds being the same. For the top speed of the 19 and 21 to be the same despite the 19 having a gear that reduces torque to increase RPMs means the motor of the 19 must have a shorter RPM range. Since both the 19 and 21 share the same motor and therefore motor torque, the only way RPM can differ is by power. This proves the batteries provide different power output and that the 19 and 21 kWh batteries provide different power.

Horsepower with EVs is misleading, as they only state the capacity of the motor and not the whole electric system.

>I don't think you understand how an EV drivetrain works. Batteries do determine horsepower because they are literally the source of power for the drivetrain.
Wrong. The motor is indifferent to the battery voltage and capacity, the drive inverter and motor controller determine the output of the motor. Didn't read the rest of your post as I'm sure it's full of similarly wrong assumptions.

>>
>>17839127
But I am him

My understanding is that power output is dictated by the kWh of the power source as it is literally the amount of power output over time. Controllers and inverters can only reduce the power available to the motor by changing current properties

I got a hatch, I put a thermostat in it so now it gets hot.

QTDDTOT question: I need to replace my fog lights. One has broken lens and burned out, might as well change both. H10 size, looking for yellow, everything on Amazon has some crappy looking names I'm unfamiliar with, so what's good? What's a good brand for some yellow H10 fog lights?

kWh doesn't have anything to do with the output of the motor. Even if you doubled the kWh capacity of the pack the voltage is the same because modules are added in parallel, not series. The inverter/motor controller are indifferent to the size of the pack. What you are saying is the same as saying a car with a bigger gas tank makes more horsepower. Peak current matters, but that isn't related to the kWh capacity of the pack. Each individual module on a base Tesla Model S 60 is identical to the P100D, there are just more of them on the 100 and there are larger bus bars/pyrofuse to allow for a higher peak draw. You could remove all the modules but 1 in the P100D and it would make the exact same amount of power, just wouldn't last very long (it would be a 7 kWh pack).
>>
>>17839224
>power output is dictated by the kWh of the power source

Dude... no. The larger battery simply means longer run time in this case.

This is why I was telling you there is no power increase in the one with the slightly larger battery.

They all have 140 Hp. End of fucking story. Go read the manufacturers specs. There is no argument.

Please don't tell me you been telling people incorrect info like this...

The car isnt a hot hatch, please leave now.
