Last thread the only guy that replied allied dual sport a shit, so I'll ask again now that it's later.

I want something to daily that's fairly inexpensive. Instead of a shitbox car, I'm thinking about getting a dual sport bike. From what I've read the Husqvarna has good gearing for street riding, which is most of what I'd be doing. Would it make sense to get a bike? I'm in Texas so I could feasibly ride year round.

I daily a 701 Supermoto, and have a dual sport setup for it, and I don't own a car.
A 701 is nothing even close to 'inexpensive', mine was almost $14k OTD, you can find leftover 2016 Enduro's with the last gen engine for $9k if you're really lucky.

If you want cheap get a nice DR650, or at least an older model KTM 690 Enduro (same bike as the 701 without latest revisions).

There is absolutely no reason why you can't daily a dual sport in Texas, except maybe the heat.
>>
>>17807823
Didn't you say you were broke though? And huskies are austrian meme bikes that need heavier maintenance, just get a dr650 tractor bike for cheap

I'll keep that in mind. I can afford 190-200 a month in payments, especially since I was giving a low estimate after tax and diverting cash to my savings. I was looking at the XR650L, but what I was reading said the 5 speed gearbox wasn't so good at highway speeds.

Forgot to add, I thought the Enduro was 12K and not 14? Everything I've seen has it around 10.8-12K. The KTM price range looked only consistently 1K cheaper.
>>
>>17807863
>that need heavier maintenance
This meme needs to stop. This is everything I have spent on maintenance in the past 9 months.

600 miles:
>two oil filters - $15 (HiFlo brand, who make the KTM branded ones)
>4L of Bel-ray 10w50 good stuff - $60
7600 miles:
>two oil filters - $15
>4L of Bel-ray - $60 (only needed a little more but bought the jug)
>Pilot Road 4 rear tire - $200
>valve shim kit - $80 (never have to buy this again, could have spent $12 on the specific shims)

That's $430 with a whole box of shims and 3L of oil left over, I'll spend $15 more on oil filters in a few months and that will be my maintenance for the year. I doubt I'll have to adjust the valves for another 30k if the KTM forums are to be believed. It's not a race bike like the 501.

>>17807911
>>17807928
The 701 SM was $12.5 MSRP, I waited in line for 6 months to get one, so there was no negotiating, there was someone in line to take it if I tried, and paid about $1100 in dealer fees etc.

Please don't finance what appears to be your first bike, and a dual sport at that. How much time do you spend on the highway?
>>
>>17807926
>implying you can handle the bike

>>17807942

Xr650l is just fine at highway speeds, dont expect 200kmph freeway blasts but it can cruise at 115kmph just fine.
>>
>>17807980
Lmao what the fuck
>>
>>17807955
Hm, hose are 80mph in Texas right? Do you Texans typically speed in the left lane like in places where it's 65mph, or overtake at 90 regularly?

A DRZ400 will cruise at 70 just fine, and over take at 80, if not very fast. A WR250R will actually be better on the highway than a DRZ because of the 6 speed, and an XR650L or DR650 should be even better than the WR. If you plan on passing people at 90 all day though you definitely need to go for the 690/701, or just get a street bike. Note the 2017 701 has a different engine than the last 5 years of the 690, and the current 690, the 2016 701 has the same engine though.

>>17807983
In the southern USA there are plenty of 120-140km/h highways, and in the USA the typical rate of traffic is 15-25km/h over, since cops won't bother to ticket you that close to the limit.
>>
>>17807996
Speed limit is 70 in these parts, most drive 75-80.
>>
>>17808006
I think you'd be fine with an XR650L or DR650.
Again, please don't finance a fucking dirt bike. Pick up a DR650 for $4k that you will be able to sell for $4k a year from now after you've dropped it twice when you inevitably decide you want something else.

Cooling at highway speeds is easy since there's so much air flow. It's when you're going really slow that you need better cooling.

People really overestimate how fast they are. The warning against buying them is for immature young guys who will actually try to go fast.

Just brake with two fingers. Always. Never brake with four. Only two.

k8 gsxr 600 with the power modes

i think you can limit it to 40hp
>>
>>17809638
are you exploding out of corners like a madman or are you just doing straight line pulls

because the latter gets so boring that guys with busas and ZX-14s end up riding the speed limit everywhere because they don't even care anymore
>>
>>17809638
why did you listen to a bunch of retards and yuros on graduated licensing if you wanted an r1?
>>
>>17809640
Just in terms of blipping the throttle, 1st or second gear if im cruising and i just fucking yank it I barely get pulled. I have to consciously throw my fucking body to get my front off the ground in 1st when i yank it.

I want a superdick.
>>
>>17809647
This is what shit riders say about 600s.

You're not riding it right. Years on a 300cc twin shitbike have actually stunted your growth as a rider so now you have no innate understanding of how an engine with actual power works.
>>
>>17809653
I guess you don't, I just read that 106bhp + a full exhaust system isnt something beginners should start on and right now im finding it very fucking manageable, and I'm never scared of the power

how can i better enjoy it then? I notice it has more pull at higher rpm range than my ninja which is nice, but after riding my friends s1000rr it just feels fucking lackluster
>>
>>17808631
I read your thread on ADV. Sounded pretty goddamn awful, but it still makes me want to do the TAT.
I don't even own an dual sport.
>>
>>17809660
It's all about the revs. Keep the engine spinning when you want power.

>>17809660
>but after riding my friends s1000rr it just feels fucking lackluster
told you dude. This is what you need
>>
>>17809660
Yeah, that advice was for beginners who intended to try out race techniques like fast in-slow through-faster out. It helps to have a weaker bike for trying to "git gud" because there's a lesser chance of highsiding, and also a lesser chance of entering with too much speed for your ability to brake and turn.

For modest lean angles and cautious riding you could start on more savage liters like the ZX10 and K5 GSXR with no problem. And, of course, a liter is going to make everything else feel slow.

To enjoy the bike just rev it higher while you ride it. But keep in mind, you're spinning the wheel with more force and could skid it. If your right foot and right hand can't work together as analog traction control you might die.
>>
>>17808594
>>17808600
worse, the Darien Gap. If you think it might be possible then you don't know enough about it.
>>
>>17809675

>>

>>
>>17809681

Good. Then it worked. You rode a 300 for a while and now you're not shitting your pants on a - what are those? - a 675?
>>
>>17809689
about 120bhp 675cc yeh
>>
>>17809681
Remember, it only makes the 106 hp at 11,850.
If you're only turning 6000rpm you're doing it wrong.
>>
>>17809693
120? I thought that was the Daytona. The street is slightly de-tuned, no?
>>
>>17809660
yes goy, you need to a slightly larger machine, not too big though or you won't want to upgrade in the future.
>>

>>

>making unnecessary leans so /dbt/ won't mock you
faggot

unless you are literally on the track or in the mountains all day there is no way you have no tendies unless you make really fucking unnecessary leans all day
>>
>>17809455
You're getting a less powerful bike because you don't like the big brother's tank? C'mon now...
>>
>>17809455
Just fucking swap it then
>>
>>17809767
The headlight is also garbage, as is the entire suspension

Yamaha makes great engines and shitty everything else unless the bike's designation starts with an R and ends with a 1

>>17809775
easier said than done with modern bikes
>>
>>17809778
Why get the 07 then? Why not a different bike altogether?
>>
>>17809778
Well then stop having modern bikes, vintage bikes are prettier anyway.
>>
>>17809785
Well, but then you're still getting a less powerful bike just because of the way the tank is shaped.

Also likely getting a worse headlight and worse suspension and in some cases worse reliability.

I want to buy this ducati 796 so fucking bad for my girlfriend but I'm a bit afraid because there's a small dent in the steel frame (See pic related, near the front).

Apparently a mechanic checked it out and it's structurally fine, and the price is fucking good because of the dent.

What do you guys think? Pic related is the bike for 4000 freedombux.

Dr650, xtz660, old africa twin if you know how to maintain and fix it yourself.

Xtz1200 ( super tenere), hard to find under 8k but best bike from far for this kind of trip. Also you can take the highways with it and topcomfy, but fixing it yourself might be really hard, plan to find dealerships every 10k kilometers and you're alright.

Maybe tiger explorer 800 and 1200, as a owner of a 1200 with 74 k kilometers and ZERO problems i can certify they are pretty good, but not that great in offroad, and fixing them yourself can be a pain. Also they'll get stolen in shitskin countries.

So if the bike has 8k miles on it, it's due for it's major 7.5k service. Go take a look at it, if there's a little service icon on the dash then the service hasn't been done. Only way to clear that code is Ducati themselves or an ECU flash. 7.5k maintenance is valves and belts. They aren't difficult to do yourself, just very time consuming, coming out to 8 hours or so of work if you're at least average with a wrench.

If you take it in for service, expect a 600+ bill depending on how many valves are out of spec. Belts should be replaced every 7.5k or every 2 years, whichever is first. A lot of owners don't know the 2 year limit so make sure to ask when the belts were swapped if it's a model older than 2015.

I enjoy mine, but I wouldn't suggest it for someone if it's going to be their only bike/main mode of transportation. I intend on doing all the maintenance myself, but I have another bike so that's okay. If you can't afford to have the bike out of commission for 2-3 solid days of work, then be prepared to fork up a pretty penny at the dealership.

It's important to note the reason why it costs so much is because of how long it takes. Ducati dealers have normal hourly rates like any other shop. Checking valves is easy, adjusting is tougher. I'd strongly suggest *at least* checking them yourself and then telling the dealership which specific valves need adjusting. Or bring it to them disassembled already. Anything to cut the time the work takes down.

Hiya /dbt/ need some advice here.
Looking to get this baiku cause I love the way it looks. Gonna take off the milk crate though.
Its a Honda XL 250 from what I understand, manufacturing stopped in 1992 iirc. Dude's asking $1700 for it, says it runs good and has the pink slip. Judging from the attached image I'm a bit dubious. Look at that chain and all the goddamn mud caked.
First, haggle tips, $1700 way too fucking much.
Second how much should I offer?
Third, I already have a main baiku, I just love the looks on this one and wouldn't mind having it to putt around town and restore it as my first restoration project.

Thanks. /dbt/
