Thinking of getting a 2005 Ford Fiesta ST as my first car. Got around 3k euros to spend, considering a 2003 Renault Clio Sport as well, but the Fiesta seems to be a bit more comfortable.

Any other cars in this price range with similar/better performance I'm overlooking?

I thought of getting a BMW/Audi/Volvo/Saab wagon but I feel those are heavier and don't have as good handling.

An R53 will knock spots off both of those for a similar price, but parts are more expensive

>An R53 will knock spots off both of those

The ST? Maybe. The Clio 182? Not in a million years.
>>
>>17799762
The Clio's interior feels incredibly cheap, but my god are the chassis and engine good.
>>
>>17799810
I don't know if I can find a used R53, I had a look and they seem so rare. Plus I don't want trouble with parts.

>>17799826
If I can't find a 182, how does the 172 compare?

>>17799835
I noticed, that's why I was leaning towards the Fiesta (plus the Fiesta has some nicer seats IMO)

I understand the Fiesta isn't as fast as the 172/182, but if I can't find a good used model, would the Fiesta be just as fun (handling wise)?
I've heard mostly good reviews about it.
>>
>>17799826
Let me re-word that.
An R53 JCW will knock spots off both

You can get a pre-facelift with 200bhp for around 2.5k now and a facelift with 210bhp for around 3k
>>
>>17799880
The 182 and 172 are almost the same car, I'd imagine the difference is negligible.
>>
>>17799881
Where are you looking for prices?
I have to import from Germany, been using mobile.de so far to gauge the price.

Also, how's the fuel economy in the city on that? I have to DD this.

>>17799891
Ok, thanks. I'll consider it then.
>>
>>17799880

IIRC the 172 was discontinued in 2001 in favor of the 182. You sure it's the 172?

>>17799881
You are seriously underestimating the chassis of the 182, especially if it has the Cup Pack. I still think the JCW is the 2nd best hot hatch of the early 2000's mind you, but going against the Clio's handling is a uphill battle.
>>
>>17799880
my cousin has a Fiesta, i have a 172.
I let him take my Clio for a spin and immediately he said the Clio feels firmer, everything from the steering to the heavier clutch.

I think his interior is nicer in general (less rattles too) but I'm biased towards my shit box as I like the driving position and every drive, no matter how sedate your intentions turns into a fun experience due to its torquey engine and sharp steering.

There's also a nice aftermarket for 172's and 182's if your into that
>>
>>17799951
The engine says 172 HP from 2003, doesn't it mean that's a 172?
I agree with you that it was discontinued, I was just stating what I saw on used car websites.

However, there aren't many offers for these cars, and some are way overpriced. But in the UK it looks like it's full of many hot hatches. Why is that?

>>17799957
I sort of like the looks of the Fiesta, but it seems the Renault has better performance. Have you had any problems with it? Major parts to place?
>>
>>17800000

Apparently it was 2004, not 2001. My bad.

Oh and nice repeating digits
>>
>>17799762
The old ST's are solid cars, nippy, fun to drive and cheap to own

Look for a lower mileage one, with a full service history. Also look for ones where the owners have been part of the various ST owner's clubs, they are bound to be well looked after.

Higher mileage ones will probably need more maintenance or servicing, because it's bound to have been thrashed about a bit.

They are real good fun cars though. There's a big aftermarket community as well if your into that sort of thing.
>>
>>17800000
I had a timing belt snap and that borked an engine,
just be sure to get the belt done by specialists (pricey job).
that's the only real major issue I've had other than needing a new alternator.
Engine mounts usually need to be replaced too as the stock ones are prone to cracking, you can get good aftermarket ones from ktec.

I like the look of the fiesta more too t b q h
>>
>>17800011
Thanks.

>>17800027
I don't mind higher mileage, as long as it's been well maintained, and has service history.
I am sure it's a fun car, any other car I should consider?

>>17800064
Doesn't sound too bad, what about your cousin's Fiesta? I heard the gearbox has some issues, and the steering fluid overheats.
>>
>>17799762
Put 3k deposit down on a nearly new one they are cheap enough. Finance would be cheap.
>>
>>17800379
>nearly new car insurance for a first car
>for a FiST
RIP in pieces bank account
Having said that, I drive a 2011 Fiesta Metal as my second car (similar spec to a mk6 ST but it's a Mk 7) and somehow managed to get the insurance for a grand having passed my test 6 months ago. Doubt you'd get it that low for a Mk 8 ST though, you'd be looking at over 2 grand with one of those for your first car. Maybe closer to 1.5k with a cuck box
>>
>>17800379
I don't want to finance for personal reasons, so this is my budget for now.

>>17800402
Yeah, that's out of the question. I'd rather save money on insurance and maybe get some mods.
