I've seen E36s blow E46 M3s out too at track days. Doesn't mean its better.

E36 is more fun on the street and approachable, E46 is faster all around. Both will be a moneypit like a old German car can be.

Be happy we even got that "neutered" engine because if BMW wasn't gonna import ///M cars to North America after the sales failures that were the E34 M5 and E30 M3. The US E36 M3 is why you even got the E46 M3 in the first place.

Like I said I have had my E36 M3 sense 2004 and put 80k miles on it. You would be very surprised to hear in fact it has not been that bad to live with. It was my daily driver for the first few years. Only major on the road failure was a radiator. Last year I did do a major refit at 153K miles however. But that was after years of not doing anything and I spent under $3,000 (That was me doing all the work). All the stuff I did were normal wear items after 13 years of driving on Maine's Super Great Roads.

E36 has the classic BMW look and the E46 looks like a cheap knock-off of it. Also the E36 M3 is the first real M3. Not that the E30 M3 wasn't a homologation racer but it's just slow and very 80s and the E36 modern fast and in contrast the E46 M3 didn't anything new or important.

Didn't like the looks of the e36 before, but it has grown on me.
Went for the e46 m3 myself tho.
