>thinks there might be a problem with the idle circuit
>look to see and find out that the yellow wire that goes to the idle cut solenoid is showing a big fat lump near the end of it (which it shouldn't have, only smooth across)
>at the same time, use vacuum gauge connected to the vacuum line off brake booster and it reads 18 inhg at idle, steady reading, probably should be higher
>hit throttle and drops down to 15 inhg instead of 0-3 inhg and goes back up to 18 inhg
Can someone help me identify what could be the problem child here?
Is it the carburetor? If so, electronic or mechanical issue?
Or is it the valves considering they haven't been adjusted in over 20 years?

The fuel cut solenoid will prevent a vehicle from starting if the the solenoid is normally open. The plunger will retract when the key is in the on position. It sounds like it could be choke linkage related. Perhaps give your linkages a good hit with some penetrating oil (not wd-40) and see if that frees them up. Try adjusting your automatic choke so that the choke is about 1/8 of an inch from fully closed, then hit the throttle and the plate should close. As long as it is not fluctuating vacuum during Idle, your valves should be ok. This page is handy if you want to do some more tests with your gauge. http://www.gregsengine.com/using-a-vacuum-gauge.html
>>
>>17790006
the vacuum does not fluctuate, it stays steady at 18 inhg but when I hit the gas it drops to 15 inhg when it should drop to around 2-3 inhg.

I went and looked at the 98, guy couldnt get it started and didnt mention the window rust. Basically wasted 150 mile trip, but my camaro did good 98% of the way and even got 14mpg!

Sadly the light switch shorted out (smoke and all) and i lost interior and tail lights. To make it worse, 5 miles from home, i got this random thumping from my rear wheel... turns out 2 studs holding the spacer sheared off, and looks like there were no nuts holding the spacer on! Some how made it to work without losing my wheel and got it all fixed up.

Still no lights, gonna order a new switch and hope it was just that.

stupid question, I'd like to get the most miles out of my new poncho 400 since it's going to get daily driven. What oil / filter would be recommended for this task. Also another stupid question, can someone tell me where the little key / Seat belt warning buzzer noise generator is located on a second gen F body. I tried googling it first and still no luck.
>>
>>17791730
The paint on the block is trashed so I'll be painting the when I get the chance. Next is the intake manifold though. My end goal is all black with plenty of chrome pieces, I like the contrast of it
>>
>>17791741
One thing I've heard about oil is that going thicker isn't always better because the viscosity additives they put in hinder the oil's performance. I'd stick with 10w-30. As for the buzzing, I've got no clue. My third gen does it too, it's fucking horrible haha
>>
>>17791775
I'll stick with 10w30 then, the buzzer doesn't work and I'd kinda like to fix it.
>>
>>17791796
If the engine is particular trashed you can use rotella, I also tend to stick to partial synthetic 10w30 myself though. Full synthetic leaks a lot on some of my old motors. Usually castrol, fairly affordable
>>
>>17791706
Used a rivit gun/hammer, made quick work of those studds. Got some slightly longer ones, got them pulled in with an impact, put the spacer back on (it was a little chewed up but i think itll work), gonna get some lug nut washers and retorque everything this week.

The engine bay is either surface rust or indistinguishable from all the dust. Intake manifold is red, block is orange, pan was orange (I painted it black when I repaired the drain plug), and valve covers are black. I'm guessing some chuckle fuck decided orange would be fun for some reason.

Dumb question, pretty sure the radiator has to come out so I can install the condenser/new fan shroud etc. Do I really need to flush the whole system? It was operating fine before... I wouldn't even change the coolant if I didn't have to pull the radiator. Me again.
I spent the day trekking through a huge ass junkyard for the second time in two days.

Apparently they have a good selection of old shit (and from the looks of it, they did)
Old Alfa Romeos, Chevys, and shitloads of ford trucks.
They even had a few lincolns and mercuries (both brands were all the wrong years/hinge type)

Are late 60's/early 70's ford coupe parts that hard to find offline?
Am I damned to never finding a scrap heap to get parts from?

Yeah it probably has to come out for the condenser. You probably don't need to look up the brand of the coolant, just match the color. If the coolant is old, it'll be a good idea to get as much of the old coolant out but don't kill yourself over it. It won't be the end of the world. As long as it's the same type of coolant, it'll be fine.

General sales and deliveries stopped on January 1, 1941. They continue production until February 22, 1942. The cars produced from Jan 1 to Feb 22 were rationed and sold to people who were considered "essential drivers". They produced about 500,000 cars in those months. The last model year is 1942. But you can see the effect of rationing earlier. The government rationed things like nickel before the war even began. Same thing happened with nickel during the Korean War as there was a general shortage of Nickel through most of the 50s

That'll flood it. You'll prolly only need to pump the gas at temperatures approaching freezing.
you only need to hit the throttle once to set the choke and you prolly don't even need the choke in summer.

possibly, if it can't ignite well enough to burn the whole mixture it'll have problems.

>That's how I've been doing it and up until now it's started perfect every time.
I hate to say it but if that's the case then something is funky with your carb(s). When carbs are tuned right there should be no problem starting right away when it's between like 70-90 degrees outside.
You should pull all of your plugs and "read" them

These charts don't give the whole picture but they're a good place to start to understand how your engine is running.

>>17797036
sure
>>
>>17797058
Oh believe me, that carb is fucked up. There's wet gas on the plugs even when it's running decently and carbon built up on them so it's definitely running rich. Also gas in the fucking oil but I've been keeping that fresh and barely drive it. But it's at least started fine this whole time and that's my main concern right now
>>
>>17797096
you might want to just consider a whole new carb, what carb is it?
If it's not some wackadoo European thing you can probably tear it down to the base castings and rebuild the whole thing and it'll be fine.

Fuck those 4 torx bolts that are half impossible to get to unless you take the whole thing apart and even then you need a swivel joint to even think about tightening them. In other news, I met a girl from my old school and she wants to hangout sometime. I figured since the T/A is getting a new tranny and motor might as well road trip it over there (150 miles). What would be some pro tips on how to prep a car for a road trip. As soon as I get the new motor and tranny in I'm going to be doing wheel bearings as some extra insurance.

The gas would have evaporated by now but in future to know if you've flooded it, just push the gas pedal all the way in and hold it open, the extra air will compensate for the excess gas. Crank it and if it starts (and probably dies once you let off the throttle) then you know you've flooded it and just have to wait for the gas to evaporate
>>

WWII Ford was a shitshow.

The Ford Motor Company was Henry's kingdom except he was...incapable of running it while also refusing to recognize that fact. It got so bad the Roosevelt Administration actually considered nationalizing the company but didn't take any significant action. Eventually the Navy sent Henry the Deuce (yes, THAT connotation) home to take over and finish out contracts.
>>
>>17797969
Ackshually, if the carburetor doesn't have a choke unloader it can't do that because the choke plate will close as soon as he pushes the throttle.

Gotta vent ccg. Mostly cause ive only had to valid offers for my camaro (a 98 that wouldnt start, and some kid offered a sweet little falcon w/ a 170 but backed out with the "grandma just died" line). In my ad i say i want to trade for a 60-70s car or truck. So far ive been offered; 2 2000s firebirds, broken down broncos, 90s chevy truck, boats, 4wheelers, and motorcycles. Its like people dont even read the ads!

Granted i havent been offered any civics which is nice.

On a related note, the other night my light switch shorted out (puff of smoke and all), so now i dont have dash lights or tail lights, but brake lights and headlights still work. Possibly just replace the switch or could it be wiring?

Another thing is i had a shop "tune" my carb, but tell me if this is still running rich; starts up very easy when cold, but struggles after the engine is warmed up.

And would it be a sin to swap my 4bl for a 2bl to try to get better mpg?

Oh no, im used to waiting. Usually it takes me a month or 2 to sell something, and thats after it goes quiet for a while and i sell to the 1st person to make me a somewhat reasonable offer. Im just irritated that people dont read the ads. For example, some guy wanted to trade his PoS 90s chevy truck. When i told him im not interested, he proceeded to send me more pics and tell me that its a good trade. Had to block the guy cause he kept asking where i was.

I'll start:
1999 Crown Victoria

1999 Corvette
>weekend car. Pretty close to showroom quality, minus a few spots showing age. Mechanically and electrically 100%, no issues. Trim is pretty close to perfect.

1978 Bronco
>project in progress. Mechanically sound, but still some big work like front axle re-gear and a/c install. Little bit of rust, nothing serious. Few electrical glitches. Trim is not complete, but in good shape. Other miscellaneous crap and couple things left to diagnose.

I made a thread about this and got a few replies but nothing too helpful.

What should I worry about if I want to daily drive one of these in Indiana?

I know rust is an issue but it will only be driven to and from work on nice days.

My main concerns are what kind of things going out on it should I expect?

Edelbrocks are in=richer/out=leaner because the screws operate as air bleeds into the idle mixture circuit while Holley's and most other carbs use the screws to limit fuel allowed into the idle mixture circuit so it's out=richer/in=leaner on those.

Original factory air with a sanden compressor from classic auto air.
Cools decently when it's under 95 or so.
After that it tries very hard but never quite catches up. It seems to me like it cooled better with a piston compressor.
I'm very curious to see how it works for you.

>Daily driver, the interior is in pretty great shape for a 30 year old truck, only real issue is a seat tear on the driver's side and the driver's door arm rest has gone to shit, exterior is 4/10. Rust holes in both of the wheel arches, rust damage elsewhere, paint is faded and fucked (gonna hopefully do something about that in the next week or so) and there's a mighty big hole in the floor pan. Needs an entirely new suspension, needs AC fixed (FUCK FLORIDA WITH NO AC), needs a new engine at some point since my main bearings are gone.
All in all, if somebody gave me $5,000 and I could take the time off work, I could get it in pretty goddamn nice shape. I suppose this is my long-term restoration and daily driver for the foreseeable future. I do plan on getting this guy mint and keeping it that way.

I've been hunting for an old tach to replace my fugly autozone model and I finally found one in super condition on ebay for $19. But it only has three terminals.

One I'm 99% sure is for the backlight bulb. The other is stamped "POS" and the other "NEG." Where's the ignition wire supposed to go? Is "neg" actually ignition and the ground just supposed to be on the body of the gauge? Confused

>Is "neg" actually ignition and the ground just supposed to be on the body of the gauge
Can anon chime in if it would be dangerous to try this? There is a third nut, unmarked, which could used/intended for ground. I believe this was often done with boat gauges which I think this unit is. And the signal wire usually goes to the negative terminal of the coil... Hence "NEG."

Alternatively the light switch could also be the power switch... In which case white->accessory, NEG->ground, POS->ignition coil. That makes less sense to me though
>>
>>17804305
Try hooking a 12v up to the pos and neg, it's probably to power the gauge. The third terminal is likely for the actual tach input. Ground the third terminal to something and the tach should max out
>>
>>17804305

If the back light bulb doesn't have an earthing wire, then it seems logical to me that the gauge does indeed earth through the case. You could check with a multimeter between the bulb power wire and the case, expect a few ohm for filament resistance of course

>1979 Ford Thunderbird

I throw some hair brained ideas out there from time to time but anyone considered opening a classic 'dealership'?

I've bought various cars at a cost of $12500 total so far, spent a mid-range estimate of about $6000 on all of them, and have arrived at what I'd call $23k in assets, about half of which is liquidated. I'm considering doing this on a bigger scale but just don't have the capital to buy a lot, get a license etc... wondering if you guys have thought about this as well. I'm considering just carrying doing what I've done, except moving the cars on more aggressively

If you dont mind spending around 20 per can, go to Napa and get them to mix you a couple rattlecans of colors you might like. Test them on some prepped scrap metal and look at them for a few days to see what you like best. I tried 3 other shades before i picked the red i wanted.

What do you do for a living? I would start today but I have next to no capital... Since I left college (half way through, got suspended and never returned) I work part time as a woodworker, so, basically, just a fancy NEET.

It just seems like once you'd have the building and license, it would be so easy to trawl craigslist for good deals, snatch them and drive them to the lot, dump them there, do a good buff and polish and some standard maintenance, and just sell them at 40% profit. Hey guys, might be selling my camaro today for 3500, so like all, im back to looking.

Need some advice on this 65 mustang on my thread

>>17809822

Long story short; need advice on what to look for, and how to jew the guy down. Ad says 6k, says he will take 4.2k, and i wanna try to get him lower.
>>
>>17808441
There are quite a few out there actually. Granted theyre either way over priced or they have mix stock (some modern vehicles). Gulfshoresclassics is one near me. Gateway classics is another one i frequent for dreaming.
>>
>>17808544
My resume reads like a Frank Sinatra song; until recently, I was an undertaker; but, now, I'm in IT.
>>
>>17809863
The only advice to jewing people down is being willing to walk away. Pointing out stuff you'll need to fix generally doesn't work unless they're truly clueless. But if you're willing to walk away, you make your highest offer, and if they say no, you have to show you're willing to leave it at that. If they were ever going to accept your offer, they will stop you before you leave. My dad's advice was, if there's ever a long silence, don't ever speak first
>>
>>17810069
I know they exist, Classic Car Liquidators is a pretty cool one down here. I was more talking about opening a "dealership" with a lot and garage, but basically just being a place you would buy and sell numerous toys as the sole employee. But it, have fun for a week, throw it on craigslist
>>
>>17810118
My dads advice was always go with one or two other people. Think about what you want to pay first and pocket a little less than that, give the rest to one friend, and a bit more to the other if you have 2 with you. One must be "against" you buying the car. If seller wont take your offer, cause thats all you have "but maybe my bro/amigo etc can help" step back and "discuss" it with friends, come back with more you had friend 1 pocket as a counter offer.

1964 ford falcon

Still the interior is mostly done accept for a headliner/seats, Mechanically sound as far I have noticed while driving. Just needs a lot of cosmetic work.

2000 Ford ranger
>dads work truck learned to drive in this truck, I love it, he loves it, mom hates it, work with him on it when we know how to fix something on it, all around dependable truck.

2015 mitsubishi mirage

My dad always bring everything in cash, and use only 10 and 20s, Makes the stacks look a lot more hefty then what they really are, so when you show them it, they think they are getting a better deal. Plus it help to see 10-20 good size cash wads on the table when you are explaining just how much "more" you need to put into the car to get her to where you want it.
>>
>>17808441
There's one by my dealership, they deal with restored or good condition classics. One of the major problems I could see there is idiots thinking they're getting a car that won't need work and they come back complaining about broken shit. And also getting the right cars that won't need too much work. It can be done obviously but I don't know how those places make profit.

1971 Plymouth Valiant
>DD, good condition
>needs Heat/AC controller fixed (already ordered piece; previous owner just wired a toggle switch strait from fuse to blower motor)
>replace broken defrost vents (ordered)
>replace window weatherstripping, it's crap
>get a new bumpstop for front right wheel, practically nothing left of old one.
>Replace the shitty CD player (it skips on every goddamn bump) mounted under the dash, but I don't want to cut the hole for the original. Maybe save up for a hidden one?
>Eventually, get it repainted, because I'm not that into the brown and the black hood makes it look like shit...plus, a coworker compared the colour mix as a pinto-bean, and I fucking hate those kind of beans

2000 Chevy Silverado, DD, Regular cab, close to 220k miles on it, only major repair was getting a solenoid replaced in the transmission a couple years ago. Truck could use a good detailing but thats about it right now. Has a plastic bedliner that ibwant to remove and have a spray-in done.

1964 Ford Falcon, restoration in progress, will become a near dd when done. Spent 1.5k on the car... probably 7 or 8k in parts/repairs over the last year and a half.

Bikes?
1978 Honda CT90 dualsport, rebuilt the carb earlier this year and flushed the tank. Needs new tires and tubes. Dad got it in a trade over 20 years ago but never registered it.

1967 Honda CT90. State of near total disassembly. Was planned to do a complete restore before my brother's health deteriorated a few years ago and its just sitting in the garage. Grandpa got it in a trade after doing work for someone who couldnt pay.

No, you have to literally take the engine apart.
The crank has to come out. And you have to spec and hone the cylinders and full gasket/seal set.
It's the same as a complete rebuild, just without changing bearings (which is pointless to not do while you're in there).
Just find a used motor or rebuild.
>>
>>17816082
Rip. Guess it's for the best, that engine's in rough shape
>>
>>17815995

They're rings ON the pistons.

You need to take the bottom out and literally remove the pistons from their cylinders.

It's one of the most involved jobs, second maybe to replacing gears in a transmission.

>>
>>17816141

Probably not worth it, unless you have another car and this one can just sit while you tinker with it for a month.

Keep in mind you'll have to drain everything and refill, readjust timing, and if you're in there replacing some rings you should just be replacing them all (compression and oil rings).

I found this link. Might be a trick to help prolong your engine. Im thinking of doing it to try slowing my oil conception (at least i think so? No leaks, and no smoke, so where does the oil go?)

http://www.mikebentley.com/oilburn.htm

Anyone have any tips? Im trying an oil thickener thats supposed to have good reviews.

well get a new engine and rebuild your old one for fun

What are you gonna do? make it worse?

It's just a 305 so if it is the rings I probably wouldn't bother. Another thought, could it be that my valve covers aren't sealing right? I think they're warped and there's a fuckload of oil coming out of them

While you're at it you might as well rebuild the valvetrain and replace all the bearings.

noice, is it a 500? If so, how many thousands of hp do you hope to attain?

472; same block as the 500, though, and it's only going to get VERY light work, since I want it for a cruiser.

I'm working on my '67 Plymouth Fury this weekend. It's been off the road for about 3 years.
So far:
>axle seals wear and leak because the end adjuster was missing
>replaced seals, still leaks
>buy sealed axle bearings
>buy harbor freight shop press to install bearings
>installed new sealed axle bearings
>new gear oil because it all leaked out
>16" steelies from a 99 crown vic
>painted the steelies flat black
I'll take it around the block tomorrow and see how it rides, then I'll start working on some rust spots and shitty bondo work.

After talking to a few old guys i know, i ended up taking another shot at the rear window using paracord like was suggested above. Worked super quick and easy, may have been because i bought a new seal that hadnt been bunched up in a plastic bag for 13 years, though.
