i filled up my tank with 93 octane gas for regular price because my gas station was out of regular gas.

Maybe it's just placebo, but I feel like my gear changes and acceleration more smoother now. Does that make sense? It's just a non-turbo 2.0L Mazda3. What difference does it actually make, placebo aside?

the engine does knock a bit when it's chilly though. It's still warm right now, but would 93 octane gas help in those cases?
>>
>>17788640
It took me a second to get used to. I asked the salesman about it and he said it was the turbo, but he's a salesman so I don't know.

It's bad but manageable, but it doesn't matter if you're driving hard and power-shifting and if you're just cruising, you just have to train yourself to shift slightly slower. After a few shifts I was as smooth as I am with anything else.
>>
>>17788380
pick any of corolla, civic, and mazda3. With a $4K budget, you should be able to get one of those econoboxes with 50K miles, give or take a dozen K depending on your area.

a nicer car can wait until they're 25 unless insurance is really cheap in your area anyways.

>BMW 325XiT E46 with 198k miles

It's pretty much the exact car with the exact color combo I want, but I'd rather have RWD, and I'm pretty hesitant about the mileage. Should I stay away from it? I'm guessing all the maintenance I'll have to do when I get it will probably add up to as much, or more, than what I pay for the car.

How can I stop my brakes from squealing? I thought I needed new pads so I took my truck to the shop. After looking at it, they said there's plenty of life left on my pads and the issue is that I have self-adjusting drums. They claim the noise will eventually go away, but it's seriously like nails on a chalkboard to me.

What do you call this and where can I find more information pertaining to this and fixing it?
>>
My car is steering right on acceleration and then centering back left on closed throttle/no brakes. 1987 mr2. All wheels and tires are the same size, air pressure all the same, suspension in the front looks good. The car kind of lifts up to that right corner of the car, and it feels like its happening in the back (whatevers causing it) than upfront

wtf is going on?? btw i checked alignment too, nothings changed

kek if this isn't bait
yes if your car is knocking sometimes you should put in higher octane fuel, and the gear changes/acceleration improving are (probably) because your ecu was pulling timing because of low octane fuel before. Now it's running how it was always supposed to run. Nice carhack you discovered senpai

So, would pic related make a decent project truck? Assuming I could get it for the right price? Truck is really clean, but motor clearly needs help and/or just flzt out replacing. Sounds potentially like rod knock or a ground off cam lobe or something. Engine has no power unless you get on it and when you DO give it hell there's an odd metal chattering sound. Almost like valvetrain noise. No CEL because of course there isn't.

I have the front bumper off of my car at the moment, having to do some repair work. There is a foam bumper absorber between the plastic bumper cover and the metal of the car body. Can I take that out and make the same basic shape out of roll cage tube and put the plastic bumper cover over that? I want to fuck someone's shit up the next time they pull out in front of me without looking, but with minimal damage to my own ride. Is taking the foam out and putting a metal structure in its place legal?

Or

I really don't use this car anymore, I've been thinking about cutting it up, having some fun, and making something cool out of it. Maybe something akin to the movie death proof. I'd love to have it fully reinforced, but unnoticeable to anyone outside the car. Is a tube chassis car street legal? Live in ky.

My motorcycle has a cable connected to the battery for charging it during the winter.

Problem is I bought one of those handheld battery charger from Ctek but the plug doesn't fit.

Can anyone tell me what plug is this and what would fit it?

How do I get the best fuel economy? Always use the highest gear possible to keep the revs low?
Accelerate quickly and shift into a higher gear asap (what I do now, I go 2-4th all the time), or go through all the gears and accelerate slowly?
The car has a simple 1.3l petrol engine and 5 speed manual, no turbos and no trip computer to show me instant fuel consumption.

>Always use the highest gear possible to keep the revs low?

No this isn't always good. You can end up with too low revs and having to plant your foot to the floor to accelerate anywhere. At best burning more fuel, at worst lugging the engine.

>Accelerate quickly and shift into a higher gear asap

Also no. Just accelerate smoothly and gently. Change up early but not so early you end up under 1300.

Avoid the brakes at all costs. Anticipate red lights ahead and junctions and engine brake up as much as possible (when you get totally off the throttle in a manual you burn no fuel, but clutch in and you burn fuel to idle while you coast uselessly along)
>>
>>17791881
I avoid lugging the engine at all costs, I know it's bad for the engine.
Not sure if the ECU is modern enough to cut off the fuel when using engine breaking however.
>>
>>17791896

You car would have to be absolutely ancient not to do this. Like carburettor old.

Even if it doesn't, it would use a pittance of fuel compared to idling.

Is it generally a bad idea to cut metal off of your door to fit a speaker? I have a 2001 civic sedan and bought some 6 inch speakers and adapters, yet the speaker has a retardely wide section that i cant fot in the retardedly small oem hole. Will this affect anything if I just slice out all of the metal inside the ring so itll fit? I'd rather not but the oem speaker is just fucking weird to begin with so i think ill have this same problem with anything else of decent quality

>>
>>17793435
damn niqqa I had that exact problem probably 4 years ago, I ended up using really thick spacers I cut out of mdf, cutting the metal would be a pain in the ass (to answer your question it should be okay to do if you really want to). I would recommend making spacers instead as long as it doesn't make it thick enough to hit the inside of the door plastic when you put it back on.

He said wd40 not 5w40 dude, I hope you're not baiting

You can use 5w40 in a 5w30 spec engine typically when it reaches a high mileage and the clearances have increased in size. Mine is nearing 100k and I'm switching to 5w40. My cousin is a mechanic and told me to use 10w40 but my engine is not that fucked yet. He uses it in his e39 though.

Buy a cheap DA/random orbit etc buffer, a microfiber cutting pad, and some rubbing/cutting compound (i.e. m105). you should be able to cut away the burnt clear, with lots of cleaning out of the pad between sections (preferably with some water and compressed air). If you aren't competent with buffing and dont want to clean out the pad as much then use a foam cutting pad.
If you want it to look pristine after, buy a polishing pad and some polish i.e. m205
For technique, look up ammo nyc on youtube, the best there is.
to summarize, for around 120 bucks and an afternoon in the sun, you can restore your existing paint rather than covering it up for much more money.

You'd have to get close to 50psi+ to risk damaging the tire.

:^( Unfortunately my current daily has to go and it rains far, far too often here for me to want to daily on my bike.
>>
>>17804054
you are going to miss the acceleration of your bike a ton if you get a miata, they really are pretty slow. If you are worried about rain remember dat soft top leaks like hell too.
Just gonna say it once more check out e46's and other similar cars b4 you go full miata.
>>
>>17804073
Gotta say this, too. Takes an age to get to 60mph.
Corner faster than a bike tho.
>>
What's a good brand for reasonably priced, sporty looking wheels for an R33 GTST? I'm just not sure what brnads to look into as far as nice looking wheels for a daily driver goes, and they will have to deal with some gravel from my driveway.

Ausfag btw.

I found a 1988 rx7 FC for 2.5k on craigslist - I'm a car noob, and it would be my first manual, first rotary, first sports car. Seems like a good deal and I love the car, but I'm kinda broke. Really want something to thrash around though. Should I call the guy or build funds and let it go.
>>
I'm planning to list my car for a price I know I'll never get and expect much lower.

is there a way to convey that I'm not all that firm on my price on CL without actively inviting low ballers to talk me down?

I don't want to say 'OBO' or "give me an offer" because people will just send me ridiculous offers and waste my time, but also I don't want to deter serious buyers from thinking I'm out of my mind for selling my car it at such a high price for it.

where is the contrast between asking price vs what you actually expect to get?
>>
>>17804269
What's the car, what's wrong with it, and how much do you expect to get from it?

We'll give you our opinion.

Unless you've bothered to upgrade the suspension, any supersport worth it's weight will hang with, or out corner you.

You're probably going to wreck it since it's your first car, so get the cheapest thing you can (3k or less)

Any thirty year old car is going to need lots of upkeep, especially an rx7 that you plan on beating on. If you can't work on it or can't afford to, you're going to hit a wall real fast

>Self-repair noon here

>1997 Grand Prix GT 3.8L coupe
I was cleaning the contacts on my battery cables, and generally tightening bolts. I finished up, started the car, and heard snapping. My car issue was pic related, and the snapping was my spark plug cables trying to fire the plugs. I turned off, reattached the cables in the correct order (they're numbered), restarted and the check engine light was on.

I've checked everything and they work:
>Lights
>Radio
>AC & Heater
>wipers & sprayers
>gauges
>Fuel cap
>ABS brakes
>Cruise never worked

Should I be safe just to clear the code (I can use the one at work Monday), or should I get someone competent to check it out?

Car was shaking, only in first gear, when I let the clutch up. Stopped, restarted engine, moved off. Car literally shook this off. It's driving fine now, but this is the first time my car has ever decided to dismantle itself while moving. Any idea what this is? 2013 VW UP.
>>
Hey guys I know this is a stupid question but how long should I wait before working on my engine? (Spark plugs)
I just drove about 8 miles give or take and it's 105 degrees fahrenheit outside. Will the engine even cool down at this temperature or should I wait until tomorrow morning to change the plugs.

>>17805955
Clear the code and drive it around, if the light comes back on then check all your wiring again.
>>
>>17806042
Oh dude. Stop driving it immediately.
You need to tow it to the dealer, that's part of the brake injection control, you will literally die if you drive it.
>>
>>17806128
Spray it wit water, like a fine mist. Don't go way overkill with water. It will evapratively cool the head.

My Trooper is getting way up there in miles (almost 240k) and I think now that I have a job that pays well I want to upgrade to a new ride next year.
I want to stay with a SUV because its perfect for my /out/ adventures but im not sure what to get. Are there any good and relatively new (lets say no older than 2014) body-on-frame suvs that aren't the Jeep Wrangler?

How to I set up my FWD car to corner better?

Just toe-out my rear wheels?

What do I tell the cashier?
Hey, make sure to tell the guys to toe-out the rear wheels a little; just a little. Not too much, not too little, though. Toe them out just a little.
>>
>>17807048
Just put a little oil on your tires, you'll be sliding everywhere. Worked for me
>>
>>17806976
>superchargers
Not sure, I think you get a kit for your specific car.
>turbos
Most of the hardwar in a kit is generic except for manifolds and downpipes. Remember that it is important to tune the ECU or get an aftermarket piggyback ECU, which runs another $1k+.
>>
>>17807075
>another $1k for ECU
fug
I wouldn't mind this expense if it wasn't going to make my insurance skyrocket
>>
>>17803948
In the Case of RWB and most aesthetic only setups its a matter of really wide wheels, and modification to the unibody to fit bigger wheels and the Fender

Given the sheer lack suspension space and shoddy workmanship that's typical of RWB I would not dare take one on a track.

Can a tuning shop turn a shitbox into a luxury vehicle? Including leather, heated, seats, wood and alcantara trim, parking camera and other gadgets.
>>
>>17807869
*leather and heated seats
>>
>>17807869
For all that you're better off trading it for a newer/higher trim one
>>
>>17807982
But what if it was a car you really like practically perfect and its only downside was cloth seats, no heated seats etc. So answer the question. Is it possible or no, and how hard is it to get that kind of job done?
>>
>>17808052
A higher trim of the same model will be easier to find and cheaper to do.
It is possible but it will be hard to find parts designed for it and odds are some universal kit will look and feel like shit compared to ones designed to fit your car.
>>
Trying to change spark plugs and not a single one of them will budge, should I just say fuck this and put everything back and take it to the shop? Don't want to strip the heads

I have some wd-40, should I spray it in there and wait till morning?
>>
>>17808109
pb blaster/liquid wrench may give you a fighting chance, how many miles since they were last touched?
>>
>>17808297
I have no idea honestly I bought the car at 82k miles and the spark plugs are supposed to be changed every 100k miles. I sprayed wd40 in there, put some
Of the trim back and the annoying stuff in my trunk. Gonna see if I can get my neighbor to drive me to harbor freight tomorrow. I'll get some pb blaster, should I try a breaker bar or impact wrench too?
>>
>>17808311
So yeah probably never, you still have hope at 82k, pb and a breaker bar should hopefully work. If it were me I wouldn't try an impact but maybe another anon can chime in who's tried that.
When you are going at it with the breaker bar just remember to not give it your all, if it doesn't feel like it's going to budge just take it in somewhere, then worst case someone else can take the blame for stripped threads lel
>>
>>17808353
Yeah I think you're right man, a breaker bar and pb blaster should do it and if not they're seized for real and a shop will have to do it. I'm kind of bummed because this was my first time doing an actual repair on my car but at least I can say I did everything right. I should have bought a breaker bar ahead of time but oh well. Thanks anon, hoping it works and if not I'm $140 in the hole.
>>
>>17808373
Also I should add, I bought the car at 82k but I've driven it to 97k, is there still hope? I know I should have replaced them sooner but I didn't know shit about cars and just figured I'd be fine going by the service intervals
>>
>>17808109

run the engine to get it warm then get deep creep or WD-40 in the spark plug hole and let it sit for at least 10 hours. when i used to work in a shop i did this on fuckin Ford Triton spark plugs all the time

>>17808311

issue with a air gun is you can rip the threads out of the head if the plug is fully seized and doesnt let go. most i ever used on spark plugs was a foot long breaker bar ratchet
>>
>>17808425
The engine was still warm actually when I sprayed the wd40 in, it has sat for hours but it's been 40 celsius outside all day so the engine wasn't cool at all.

Also yeah I think the impact wrench is overkill and will damage the head so I'm just gonna get a breaker bar
>>
>>17808373
>>17808380
Yeah man there is still hope don't worry, I mean you're still technically doing it before the service interval. Props for doing plugs as your first repair, it's a good one for getting a feel for the whole thing, even if it doesn't work out perfectly this time. Plus everything you bought will be useful for future repairs.
Good luck anon!
>>
>>17808432

yeah gently give it pressure to loosen it then tighten it then loosen it and repeat, itll come loose eventually. ive done hundreds of tuneups over the years and only have broken Ford 2 piece plugs in half

i worked with a guy that swore he never broke a Ford 2 piece plug but revving the engine to 5000rpm for 5 minutes then using an air gun on the plug immediately after but fuck that. ive broken too many bolts over the years with air guns to try that
>>
>>17808464
Thanks for the kind words anon, I didn't know plugs weren't considered a beginner thing, I actually found the whole process quite easy. I was loathing it in my mind because my car has so much shit you have to remove before you can access the rearmost cylinders. In reality with some time and elbow grease it all came out like nothing, I kind of enjoyed the whole thing until I found that the plugs wouldn't budge.

Trying to stay hopeful though, and even if the breaker bar and lube doesn't work I feel good knowing I've made the jump from average know-nothing to somebody who's had their hands in their cylinder head.

>>17808485
Alright I'll definitely try that, I was trying that with the socket wrench but the plugs just literally wouldn't move at all, no matter which way I turned the wrench. I'm guessing with the engine cooled, some pb blaster and the breaker bar they will come loose. If not well I'll cut my losses and will be able to say I know how to remove almost everything in my engine bay and change spark plugs now.
