Get a w123 or a w201. The 201s are basically the pinnacle of german auto engineering. Get an automatic diesel and it will outlive you

Which model would be best, 1997 and older?

If it has no turbo it will be the slowest thing on the road. My father had an indestructible 200D w123, but it was slow as shit. I would go for a w124 if you want reliability and having to tinker with something.

If you can get a W124 with a turbodiesel then you should go with that. Rock solid, potentially the best cars Mercedes ever made. If not then W201.

You can go older and get a model without a turbo, but you'll hate how slow they are
