So I was checking the oil level cars in the cars and I noticed something weird. The brown oil is my petrol car with 5000 miles on the oil. And the black stuff is my partners deisel that was services max 500 miles ago. Should it be that black?!

Diesels turn their oil black in like 5 seconds after the first startup on new oil, it's just because of how diesels work. Soot from the exhaust can blowby into the crankcase, and that turns the oil black. Totally normal and would be more worrying if it didn't happen.

Diesel exhaust can slip through the piston rings and contaminate the oil. It's completely normal, just keep the filter in good condition.
Ok cheers guys. You're awesome.
But what about the petrol, can you tell if it needs changing by the colour? I've always done it after 5000, but it seems to be in good condition.

Depends on the car, my shitbox has worn out ass rings so it's kinda bad about blowby and the oil gets dark after about 3500. I've seen newer cars go 5000+ and the oil still looks decent. At that point I'd change it because of viscosity breakdown, metal content, and to have a clean, new oil filter, not because of the color of the oil.
Ok cheers mates

It depends heavily on the car. I'm at 220,000 miles in a petrol and my oil turns brown fairly quickly after the first 500-1000 miles. There are many variables that can cause it but as long as it's not jet black or smelling really burnt, you're good.
