No expert but it looks like the metal that fell off just covers where the CV joint meets the diff to the axle. No idea what could cause it or what will happen. Might just get dirty desu.

Probably inside the diff I can only guess since I can't hear it. Have you posted to an MR2 forum? You'll get way better answers than on here.

i was told that it might be the cv axle but u suggest the diff, no i have not, would you suggest one on reddit or just a random mr2 forum?

r/MR2 is pretty dead, I would suggest a lively Toyota/MR2 forum. Just make sure to give them EVERYTHING you know cause they get grumpy really easy.

you can clearly see the cv boot is torn open and it looks like there is no grease left in that joint. that cv is most likely fucked and the clanking is all the free play in the cv joint
