Bought new ball joints and a HD tie rod for the heep, should be here by thursday. Pulled the front tires off to look at the brakes to find excessive play in the BJs... Lousy chrysler using plastics in their ball joints to save a buck. The Synergy BJs have had nothing but good reviews mostly so I can't wait for my next day off to put them in. Went with a Synergy tie rod just cause heavy dooty and there was still an active code on the site giving me nearly $150 off my order.
>>
>>17756982

>>17757409
Yeah, tire joint I frequent will patch a tire for 20 bucks in a fraction of the time it would take me to even think about doing it at home. fuqdat
>>
>>17758014
Ball joints suck, I've killed a set in 6 months from wheeling the truck hard. I prefer kingpin axles, but I don't plan on running a Dana 60 anytime soon... Ha
>>
>>17758043
Yeah, the factory ones are at nearly 80k KM. I was doing the math on swapping out the front dana 30 to a rockjock 44 or teraflex axle and its just not doable right now, largest tire size I'd like to go is 37 but we all know how that goes. If I could find a set of one tons for cheap to build up over time I'd do it.
>>
>>17758069
Yeah I have 37s now on my K5, got 10 bolt 1/2 ton axles. Just bought a 14 bolt full float rear so I don't have to worry about broken rear axles or wheels falling off. I'm probably gonna keep the 10 bolt front axle and run RCV axle shafts. Anything larger than 37s I'd go larger front axle.built Dana 44s will handle 37s just don't run an engine with too much power.

I've run 1 tons before, they are great, but heavy and expensive. I kinda like running smaller axles that'll just handle the tires you want to run, then you have to drive smarter... Ha
>>
>>17758124
Running 35s on the dana30/44, sport model 3.21 gears included with no limited slip or lockers and just a disconnected front end. Lol, I gotta be smart about my lines or Im never getting up it.

Nah, Sportsman 570. Its a fine machine when you're transporting yourself, a backpack and maybe a few long tools, as its small and slim - but when you're towing a small ATV-trailer with fine gravel you can feel that both the engine and brakes are a tad too small

Do they make Diesel powered Jeeps in the US? I keep looking for a Diesel Wrangler but can't find any. Anybody tried using biodiesel before?

It has like 50 names across the globe, but yeah.

I think it's mostly because so few off-road vehicles in burgerland aren't huge monstrosities. The Tracker/Sidekicks are fairly capable, cheap, and easy to work on. The Samurai is a better true offroader, but they're getting hard to find unadulterated.

Dunno about the exposed electronics thing, but they're an excellent offroader out of the box. With appropriate tyres it'll leave everything else behind in the bush. Just keep in mind it's a small truck with a small payload and you won't have a problem.

Anyone ever heard of a NP4530 trans? I guess they came bolted to a NP203 in a Dodge WC series.

Well my fucking problem is that somehow, one is in my 73 Dodge 360 2wd truck that I'm putting my 79 4x4 frame under. And the 79's TF727 that is bolted to its 203 is full of fucking mud.
I'd like to go manual because the pedal box is for it. auto conv wouldn't be that hard though because I already had a hurst floor shifter in the other truck.

Hello offroad fellas. I was wondering if any of you have experience with W460 G-wagens? I am specifically focusing on European anons. Mobile.de has ex-mil G300GD for sale for under 7000 EURO with under 17000 km on the clock. How insane would it be to turn something this into a project vehicle and restore over several years worth of weekends while fitting into the budget of 25000-30000 EURO? My previous diy mechanical experience is with motorcycles-only, but I am a keen learner and don't mind picking up new skills.
>>
>>17761556
I have that 300GD motor sitting in my driveway right now as we speak. If you have a buget of 25000 EUR, you can probably find an already restored one that doesn't have the anaemic OM617 motor.

How insane? I have a friend who's doing it right now and it should only take him one year as he works 2 days a week passively hammering little blocks back together.

Ex-military also means leafsprings front and back, right? Also do you have a rear skylight for a gunner's port and 24V? A lot of the things there could be very annoying to work on.
>>
>>17761582
>https://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details.html?id=247272613&damageUnrepaired=NO_DAMAGE_UNREPAIRED&doorCount=FOUR_OR_FIVE&fuels=DIESEL&isSearchRequest=true&makeModelVariant1.makeId=17200&makeModelVariant1.modelDescription=G+300GD&makeModelVariant1.modelGroupId=12&maxPrice=20000&pageNumber=1&scopeId=C&fnai=prev
It's the Puch G version for the EE civie market & military. Doesn't look like there is a skylight. I assume you mean bundeswehr versions for the gunner's port, right?
What is wrong with OM617? My thought was that it was one of the legendary reliability motors. In addition to biodiesel and all that jive.

I have gotten the idea from looking at the reviews of the new G-wagen professional. Surely you can restore an older one to something similar for under 30000 EURO, can't you?
>>
>>17761647
I have two OM617s sitting in my driveway right now. One is an .951 TD (mass produced and very reliable) and the other one is a .931 specific to the G-Wagon. Came with a lot of funky stuff and parts for it are more expensive than others. The intake manifold does not have a regulator which may give it an extra 2 or 5 HP but costs twice the price of regular ones. The biodiesel or grease slowly eats away at your injectors which could cost up to $1000-$1500 for original ones.

I have all the whole set that can sell to you for like $2000USD or so if you're serious about rebuilding it to G-Wagon specs. I would swap in a .951 TurboDiesel.

Anyway, you can BUY a refurbished G-Wagon for around 20k USD and do a small fix job while grinding away and spending 10K USD. Then they'd even have coil suspensions instead of leafs.
>>
>>17761685
I am exploring the options at the moment since that is quite a lot of money to spend.

If choosing the option of buying a refurbished G-Wagen, what would be the best G-wagen base to go for (engine and series-wise) within 20k Euro limit? Priorities are 4/5 door, off-road capable, practical and (relatively) inexpensive to maintain work-horse vehicle. Essentially a budget G-wagen professional. I don't give two shits about rims or glossy paint work.
>>
>>17760135
Issues galore mate, I'm really starting to understand the toyota tax meme. Still fun as fuck to take offroade though, gonna finally take it camping within the fortnight hopefully.
>>
>>17761356
Three options
>Find another np203
>Np205 independent tcase
>Np435 4speed manual trans with a np208 or np231 tcase out of a 80-93 dodge

The np203 while strong, is a full time 4wd and not all that desirable
>>
>>17762630
Another option is to find a 205 to put behind the low range box of the 203 to make a doubler, so 4 to 1 crawl ratio...

>tfw you realise the chinks still build a modern pattern gen2.5 Montero blister gaurd
>>
>>17762874
And unlike a lot of other Chinese copies, I don't think this looks half bad. Still unmistakably a 2.5, but still looks relevant in the modern market.
>>
>>17762630
My 203 is a part time conversion, so I'd really like to keep it.
>>
>>17762777
Tried that route nobody makes a dodge specific adaptor to mate the two, you would have to use a Chevy mated 205 to bolt to the 203 reduction box
>>
>>17762950
Then you can either rebuild your 203 or find another 203 and do a part time conversion, I think the kit is only like $150

Be warned, because the 203 uses the chain to sling fluid into an oil cup that oils the rear bearing you have to drive a few miles in 4wd once or twice a week to keep the bearing lubricated if you have a part time conversion
>>
>>17762970
Then get a Chevy 205, they aren't that expensive...
>>
>>17762993
The 203 is fine,, I just need a trans to bolt to it
>>
>>17763044
Gotcha I read that as the 203 is full of mud

If you really want to keep your 203 the only options you have is to rebuild your trans, find another 727/manual trans that had a 203 bolted to it or get one that had a 208/231 case, tear it down and swap the output shaft that's in your junk trans into it. The 203 uses a unique input shaft so unless you find a trans that had one from the factory you either got to rebuild yours or go to a different case
>>

Knowing ATs, they are not fragile. There may seem to be a lot to go wrong, but it's just a simple hydraulic system.
And in my experience, they will usually show signs you're going to break it a bit before it goes.

I feel like, for something without a proper low-range, auto is better

If you have a damned good low-range, maybe even a dual-transfer system, then I don't see how an automatic could be better
>>
>>17763602
this is the correct answer
your lowrange situation is the deciding factor
>>
>>17763602
The land cruiser A353 transmission has a second gear start which is really helpful in a lot of situations.

Manual is best only with direct injection because you can pushstart or even hand crank adapter and run your vehicle without a battery.

Why the fuck they want to buy Jeep? That means they have to be responsible for all the retiree benefits packages and future pension payouts. It is not the chinese way to pay out billions of dollars of both medical and pensions in the future for employees that did not earn any money for the chinese company.

If the chinese company can find alternative ways to obtain dealership locations, it will do that and then compete head to head with Jeep on price. Great Wall also owns Haval and others. It is already one of the world's largest SUV manufacturers. It is also one of the world's largest pickup truck makers. It is China's largest SUV and largest pickup truck maker. So there is plenty of firepower to compete if they can only manage to obtain dealership and distribution chain locations. That's pretty tough and expensive and takes time which they might not have if other chinese competitors also rush onto the usa market.

For offroading I'd say its when you can just idle and it'll climb & get through whatever it is you're up against without issue. If you can do this you're using less fuel, you have a much more constant flow of power, which in turn makes the car a lot more predictable. Lower RPM also means the engine won't get as warm

This is a good example. Music is perhaps a tad cringey, but here you see a dual transfer case in the works, where the car just idles and goes slowly forwards without a driver, and how easily it climbs

300s are the cheapest. my friend has a frame that you can buy off him. mint and galvanised too. I'm thinking of putting a prius on it and a cummins in the back seat one day if he still has it at this house.

You could go for a Land Crusier 70 or 80 like I did or buy two Land Rover Discovery IIs and use one for parts and one for driving. The Disco will have issues but Discos are cheap enough that you can buy three of them in non-operational. Just get the buick V8s and not the shit TDs. Your listed G-Wagon can work, too but for 30k euros, you can almost certainly buy two operational 300 series for that money (I was looking at importing them in last year and saw them locally go for around $17k CANADIAN dollars from any up to 1990).

Hell for 30k, you can even buy a Mercedes Sprinter 4x4 like the Icelandic did. See last thread. >>17658533 . Put them on 40s.

Agreed. For me personally the ability to directly influence vehicle speed with engine RPM can't be beat. The simplicity to not only maintain, but diagnose, bump start and flat tow if there's any problems out in the bush is also priceless.
Although I definitely see merit in a well built automatic in terms of torque multiplication slip, and believe that much less then a final 1st gear low range ratio much less than 40:1 you'd be better off with an auto.
>>
>>17764421
Do it. They're still the bargain buy that I feel wont stay affordable forever.
Keep in mind however they have a lot of bespoke components like the independent rear end, and a Mivec 245hp version of the 6G74 which is unique to the Pajero Evolution. Sourcing replacement top end parts is difficult if not impossible, and AFAIK replacement bare heads simply don't exist.
On the upside if the cooling system is maintained as should be and it's never allowed to overheat, there shouldn't be any reason to ever replace a top end.

If I could buy one, I'd probably pull the numbers matching Mivec motor, wrap it and put it in storage, the fit a second hand 3.8 6G75 from a locally sourced Mitsubishi 380 for daily duties and other shenanigans.
>>
>>17764577
Nice. Do it and we can wheel together.

Or you come come up to Orangeville and you can choose between a few Pajeros, 4runners, and Land Cruiser 60s that my guy has for sale. If not, he can probably import you a Pajero or equivalent if you're set on getting a RHD.

You don't need a bar, though. Any sort of rocker protection like a plastic cage (as long as you can see through it) will be fine. Though, if it's that cheap of an add-on, it may not be worth arming since the bar that will be attached to the bumper will cost 10x more than the camera if you reverse into something.

If you're gonna offroad it, keep an OEM paper element filter in it. Washable filters like K&N don't filter fine enough (hence the higher flow). They're OK for road use, but at the very least swap a paper element back in when you go wheeling.

Black K5 guy here, I have 1 ton axles I'm building up right now. I had 35" tires on it before. I got a chance to buy these 37" pitbulls for a screaming deal, couldn't pass them up. They'll get used with the 14 bolt and Dana 60 I literally bought today.

10 bolts won't spontaneously combust running 37s, you just have to be smooth while wheeling about, they can break yes but jeep fags run 35" tires on Dana 35 rears and Dana 30 front axles. IMO running 37s on 10 bolts is no worse then 35" tires on stock wrangler D30 and D35. These axles will get sold to my dad to use on a old willeys flat fender he wants to finish on 33-35" tires.

Now if I were to start throwing money into these axles to make them stronger that would be stupidity. I am currently running these tires with the 10 bolts to get me by until I finish the 1 tons, will also get wheeled and driven on the road while that is happening. I think people don't give 10 bolts enough credit, they're not as bad as people think. They're no 1 tons, but they ain't shit either.

Because market demand.

They stopped making them right as people started to realize they're probably the most solid SUV of the last 20 years

My dad drives a 2008 Offroad pack FJ - it has 325,000km and he's had zero issues with it. he only replaced the original battery 6 months ago, and that was just a precautionary measure - it was still holding a charge and starting every time

I plan to keep mine forever, unfortunately it's not a TRD/Trail Teams version though. Those are going to be insanely sought after in 20-30 years.

Is this because the land cruiser never had a big following in burgerland? Are all the inferior Jeeps just taking all the market for offroad vehicles?

Landcruisers never sold well in North America, and they haven't been available in America or Canada for quite some time now.

I recently passed a guy driving a late 80's LC, thing was in mint condition. We gave each other big thumbs-up like two giant fags, too.

Also, the IFS meme is Jeep-tier nonsense. Unless you're doing severe rock-crawling or lifting your rig more than 6", IFS is more than capable offroad. By the time you've reached that level of articulation you're probably already rolling down the side of the fucking mountain.

I'm not knocking Jeeps for offroad use, I just find it extremely sad to see what Chrysler has done to them. The build quality is pretty awful, and you need to dump $10-15,000 to make them durable enough to beat up offroad. A stock FJ is already durable and I would drive one over a modded Jeep any day.

Landcruisers are awesome and I'd DD one too, but to be honest their guts are identical to an FJ. The main benefit of an LC offroad would definitely be their visibility. There's no easy way around the blindspots of an FJ - you just need to accept that you lean forward awkwardly around turns, double-shoulder check to make sure you aren't crushing some biker in the next lane, and thank Jesus the 2011 models have a back-up camera.
>>
>>17775023
Yeah the 4runners overtake the market. You'd rarely see 4runners outside of North America since the two door Land Cruisers and Pajeros are much cheaper and more common. Where do you live and was the FJ80 the last vehicle you got?

We have a cult following of XJs here for no apparent reason whatsoever. The parts are insanely expensive and the vehicles lack a frame which means no articulation or damage ability. I maybe see one Wrangler a year so I can't say.

All modern land cruiser variants are IFS so I was just memeing kek. People have to be comfortable on road before going off road. And it's unheard of to own more than one car here

The only fanboys more faggy than jeepfags is toyotards as they carry a false sense of superiority and wave around like it's something to be envied

>Landcruisers are awesome and I'd DD one too, but to be honest their guts are identical to an FJ.
Gotta pull you up there. There is absolutely no commonality between the FJ and any fullsize Landcruiser, except for maybe the the front ring and pinion gear (the centre is otherwise different) and a few trivial parts bin interior items.
The FJ is based on the midsize Toyota platform (Hilux, Prado, Fortuner, 4Runner, Tacoma etc).
>>
>>17775424
Oh, and maybe the 1GR-FE that's available in the J200 in a few developing markets. Otherwise you'd be hard pressed to find anything other than VD, UZ or UR series engines in the 200.
>>
>>17775424

It would be more accurate to say the FJ/4Runner/Tacoma/Prado have the same guts, given that the Landcruiser is the source vehicle for pretty much everything Toyota makes that isn't a car/crossover. There's a huge overlap with the Sequoias/Tundras as well. The Landcruisers did share the same transmissions and engines as the FJs, 4Runners, and Tacomas (until they switched to the new sub-4-litre engines). The 1GR-FE and 5 speed autos were (and as far as I still know) offered in the Landcruisers here. Not sure how many people get them, most of what I see are diesels or V8s.

But to say these vehicles are starkly different isn't accurate either - the FJ/4Runner/Taco are definitely more like one another than the are like the Landcruiser, but there's a lot more than just some shared washers and bolts. If we really pulled the vehicles down to their bare bones (including the Tundra and Sequoia), you'd probably have a 40-50% overlap between all of them, especially when we consider stuff like HVAC systems, wiring, ABS monitors, etc.
>>
>>17775437

Didn't see your post about the 1GR-FE before I posted this >>17775491

Adding to that, though, is the fact that Toyota's part numbering can be misleading. The door handles used on the Toyota Tundra are identical (and can be swapped out with an FJ's handles to perfect function), yet they have completely different part numbers.

Lots of guys blacking out their FJs just buy the black Tundra door handles from the SR5 models, as they're 1/3 the cost of the black TRD FJ handles. Even the lock mechanisms are identical.

If you're in the North, everything is rotted out so you gotta pay to get fresh ones up here.

If you're in the South, all the Northeners pick you clean and drive up the price because when you sell a Hilux in Texas, you also sell to the entire Northeast, northwest, central, and Canada

Keep the speed low, and pay attention to what you're driving over

They're quite solid steel parts and they can take a beating, and in reality nothing that you're going to be hitting at an offroad-crawling pace will be able to break it

Went around town and no one had a key to fit my lock nuts. Bought a lock key extractor set and ended up having to cut off the security ring with a die grinder before actually being able to get them off. 5 hours to install two ball joints on the driver side. Fml, not enough daylight to do the other side. Working shutdown right now and probably wont have the time to do the other side for another week or two. I hate chrysler and their cheap asses using plastic in the ball joints.
