what would it take to make an engine run backwards? CCW instead of CW. I am thinking of gasoline powered internal combustion piston engines.
seems to me, all you need is a camshaft ground the "other" way, and a starter to get it spinning that direction. better double check the oil pump too, maybe switch input and output fittings.
is there anything else about an engine that is direction specific?

shift into reverse
simple

Nothing stopping you, but your entire tranny also has to be backwards which means your differential does too

You need a sufficient amount of poo smeared all in your stinky butthole before you can even consider making an engine run backwards.

Observe it from the opposite end
Cam
Starter (easy as rewiring the studs)
Intake/exhaust ports and tubing (exhaust out intake and intake through exhaust)
Oil pump (won't pull oil in reverse)
Water pump (vanes won't work in reverse)
Misc sensors may not work in reverse (cam position or similar)
Misc hoses maybe
Seems about it

Why not just invert the diff? Transmission should work correctly then
Don't big ship engines change engine rotation to reverse?

If it's remotely modern it'll also have oiler jets on the the wrong side for ccw.
>>17755891
just turn it around
Why though?

This, I've seen plenty of car engines mounted to pumps via harmonic balancer

it was popular accident in old two strokes. you're just standing on lights with clutch on, something sounds wrong for one little moment, then everything seems to be fine, you let go your clutch and lose balance because bike goes wrong way
you'd have to get custom cams, probably screw around with your timing set-up (tensioners generally on slack side and what not). use an old honda CCW motor in a modern set-up, its already running in the "right" direction!

during WW2, the P-38 had left and right Allison V-1710's. the propellers rotated different directions and the plane was very balanced. once trimmed, you could fly it by tiling your head.
did they do that wit a direction-changing gearbox, or did the engine actually turn the other direction?

true, it occurred to me what carnage would the transmission go through if you reversed the engine direction.
but there are other applications, marine transmissions can run equally well either direction. or you could put a pump box on the back of the engine, and run hydraulic pumps. lots of big off road gear works that way.

good point on the water pump. maybe use an electric pump.
I don't think the intake and exhaust ports will be affected. you still suck air in and push air out, the piston moving up and down does not care which direction the crank is rotating.
